Barton is the center on this team, not a guard.

IMO, Spytek said they’re all going to compete referring to the guard positions. Meaning that even though Hainsey and Mauch were starters last year, nothing is guaranteed this year. May the best man win, etc. (I don’t think Mauch is in danger of losing his starter status, though he may go from right to left.)
Now, that’s not to say there is a zero percent chance that Barton ends up playing guard, as anything is possible. But I would be highly surprised if that happens, barring injury. Hainsey will be competing for a guard position, or else will be the backup center/guard.
In fact it might be him and the 2 new FAs all competing for a single starting guard position.

Godwin isn’t a number 1. Maybe before the knee injury he could have been but he isn’t the same player anymore he is older and looks a lot slower out there.
