Are We Getting Burned Out On The Draft?

April 19th, 2024

Pete Prisco of CBS.

It never fails.

About two weeks after the free agent dinner bell rings, Joe’s attention turns almost exclusively to the draft.

After maybe three weeks, Joe just wants to chug a bottle of Bulleit bourbon after being so fried from draft chatter. There simply is no need for Roger Goodell to drag this out.

Thankfully, Day 1 of the draft kicks off Thursday night. Thankfully.

Joe isn’t the only one fried. A guy who writes/talks way more about the draft than Joe is prickly Pete Prisco of CBS. Yesterday, Prisco twittered that the draft needs to get here already and be done with it. He’s burned out.

Then, a few hours later, Prisco typed about a guy that most mockers mock to the Bucs at No. 26. That would be Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson.

Prisco was anti-Robinson for the longest time. Now, Prisco is beginning to become a fan.

@PriscoCBS: The more I watch of Chop Robinson, the more I like. He might end up being the best pure pass rusher in this class. He has the best get off and bend among the top guys in my book. Just needs some coaching.

Couple of things here. First, as Joe has pointed out for weeks, Robinson does a helluva job shedding blocks. But that’s it. He doesn’t finish. When an edge rusher has but four sacks in his last year of college, half of which came against UMess, how exactly do you explain that away for a guy that some think is a first-round pick?

Besides, Robinson has never had six sacks in a season facing children, for crying out loud.

Joe also said there is a decent chance Robinson blows up in the NFL. Look at all the NFL talent that James Franklin brings to Happy Valley and what does he do with that talent? Squat!

Once that talent escapes Penn State and Franklin, it sure does seem to play better in the NFL. Franklin is such an overrated coach.

(Under Franklin, Penn State has been and will always be the No. 3 team in the B1G. Then again, with Oregon, USC and Washington joining the B1G this year, Franklin and Penn State may be the perennial No. 6 team in the B1G.)

So maybe Robinson has that going for him?

Or is Prisco just punchdrunk from writing/yapping for so many weeks about the draft?

You don’t get fried if you pay no attention to all the BS. Just when that day comes it comes and they draft who they draft. All the smoke and mirrors means nothing.

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

Maybe if the CB’s can cover for a split second longer we can get some coverage sacks. Fans would look at JTS a little different if he had 7 more sacks over the last 3 years due to better coverage.

  3. heyjude Says:

So many seem to be picking Chop for the Bucs. I am not fried yet, just looking forward to next week.

  4. SB~LV Says:

    Absolutely!
I probably won’t be awake when the Bucs pick, especially since I hope they trade down with the Redskins into the top of the second round.

  5. pepsi Says:

whats ironic about Joes write up saying he doesnt finish is in the very clip posted to this article – the first 3 plays are all non sacks… so in Joes book he “didnt finish” in any of those first 3 plays. and that is the big difference between Chop and Tryon… Joe look at those first 3 plays there and reply to me saying it reminds you of Tryon because he didnt finish there?? Cmon joe let me see it. All 3 of them, he certainly finished the chop yet none of those show up as sacks, and that is Chop Robinsons 2023 season in a nut shell. fantastic pass rusher that we may be luckily enough to snag at 26

  6. gotbbucs Says:

He’s a way better player than what his stats indicate. Game tape makes that glaringly obvious. Chop and Cancey running rush games together would be pretty scary.
I certainly won’t be upset if we draft him, but if that’s the case then I think that 2nd round pick has to be an offensive lineman. Has to be.

  7. gotbbucs Says:

    Kancey, sorry.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Burned out? Is that a rhetorical question?

The last few drafts…..I can’t recall JTS, Hall or Kancey being on the radar…..who will it be this year?

  9. BucsFan55 Says:

    BIG NO

  10. SB~LV Says:

A player can’t rack sacks in college but somehow will miraculously turn into a sack artist in the NFL…
    I’ll stop right here

  11. SlyPirate Says:

Dungy used to look for guys who, “just made plays.” Barber, Brooks, Lynch, Dunn. His guys weren’t combine killers. They were slightly too small, too slow, too something that wasn’t exactly right.

Don’t draft “potential” based upon physical traits. That gets you OJ Howard and JTS. Draft football players.

  12. SB Says:

“GETTING” burned out over the draft???

  13. Pickgrin Says:

    NO!

Trade up for Latu. He is the real treasure in this class of pass rushers.

Chop is iron pyrite. Better known as “Fool’s Gold”….

  14. TheBigSombreo Says:

I always walk away from sports news until the day of free agency, the day of the draft and the day preseason starts….. maybe fantasy football draft day too, week before the season starts.

Waaaaaaaaaayyyyyy too much sports drama…. that I don’t even miss.

Things I missed (that I am even aware of)
    1) The Devon White dog house issues… very surprised at that
    2) The folks who complained about Tampa during the TB12 era… I simply watched the winning with a big smile on my face… every team loses games… perfection is essentially impossible
    3) The Mayfield vs Trask competition that never was a thing

    and many more….

anyone have any other notable non events that were treated as actual happenings that I missed?

  15. catcard202 Says:

Would not complain if Chop Robinson is the pick @ #26…As we (as a Bucs fanbase) have begged for the FO to go get pass-rushers that can grow into gamechangers!

With NFL coaching & the James Franklin curse removed, Chop has the physical tools to be a quality addition to Bucs young core for years to come.

  16. A Bucs Fan Says:

His stats are almost identical to JTS. Even with the extra year of college play.

Call me gun shy but it’s big NO from me.

  17. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Not BIG NO but HELL NO.

  18. HC Grover Says:

No….I do not care. Just hope they get some good players.

  19. Joe Says:

… so in Joes book he “didnt finish” in any of those first 3 plays.

Did he get a sack or did he not? “Finishing” he means the quarterback is sacked. Period. Not almost sacked and not pressured. A sack is a sack.

  20. WilieG Says:

I think the draft should be held in mid-March at the latest. Another month of training with their new teams would help the rookies a lot.

I also think we already have a Chump Robinson on the roster, Jane TryOn Shrinka

Dunn is the only player you mentioned that Dungy was here when they were drafted.

    —-

Sorry pepsi but totally unimpressed. Half of the plays in that video clip are plays that are not going to be highlights if the competition is NFL level. On this Joe is right. IF you can’t put up the sacks on college players then its questionable you are going to do it at the NFL level.

Sad thing is many mocks have us taking Chop with Barton still available. I’d rather trade down for a high two and three

  23. toad bowels Says:

No to Chop. As one of the Joes says, show me the production and Chop has a resume that makes JTS look like a College powerhouse.

Verse or Latu if they fall are good.
A premium big-blocking wide receiver like Brian Thomas is good.
    Trade down is good.
    A shutdown corner is good.

On another topic, on the DraftCountdown NFL comps page,
Kentucky RB Ray Davis’ NFL comp is former Buc bust Ke’Shawn Vaughan
and FL State WR Keon Coleman’s NFL comp is former Buc bust Arrelious Benn

  24. SlyPirate Says:

    Latu vs Chop vs Verse

Do yourself a favor, before you comment on a DE, watch the tape. Watch them in this order …

    1) Latu: Big and fastish. He has no technique. Like none. He can either run by you or through you. If he can’t, he’s useless.

    2) Chop: Quick off the snap, crazy bend, and fast. He’s got actual technique, too. He’s got a studder move that leaves OT flat footed, he uses his hands well, and he’s tough to get your hands on. He’ll be good.

    3) Verse: OMG! NEXT LEVEL. Ridiculous get off. He’ll blow by you, run through you, and he has moves and counter moves. He’s super strong. This is a guy you trade up for. You won’t want 1 or 2 after watching Verse.

  25. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    Yes we are

  26. Scott Says:

Half of JTS pressures in college were unblocked. PFF had him in an article on people they were not as high on that year. This year they said that about Kneeland.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    SlyPirate..so Verse it is then!

Jason trade up and get this kid…. 1st and 3rd.

  28. Steven007 Says:

Parsons had few sacks in college though he was mostly employed as an MLB. I’ve used this comparison before, but danil Hunter had a resume almost identical to Robinson’s. He blew up in the NFL. Difference is he was a third round pick I believe. Always a gamble.

  29. Steven007 Says:

    *Danielle

  30. Scott Says:

I was wrong about my in my comment above they didn’t say anything bad about Kneeland. That is a busy guy though with 16 top 30 visits

  31. rrsrq Says:

The thing with Chop is this, if you pass on him, is he Bryce young or CJ Stroud, because if you pass and he blows u in the right situation, we are all lookin at Licht like

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

There is no reason to have the draft this late. From a general sports perspective we have NHL playoffs / NBA Playoffs starting now so it would have been nice filler last weekend or 2 weeks earlier than when they schedule it. For their own ratings sake I’d think they’d do better but freaks like me will watch the draft whenever it is lol

  33. Ryan Smith Says:

I get tired of everyones mock drafts. Especially those who just see what we lost in the off-season and don’t fully know our roster.

  34. Buc4evr Says:

Total waste of a draft pick. Another overhyped bum. Hopefully the Bucs will pick up a premier Center at 26.

  35. JimBobBuc Says:

i’m getting tired of seeing highlights of other teams throwing TD’s against the Bucs – where Ryan Neal was in coverage. It’s great to have Whitehead back, and Izien with a year’s experience. Time for some INT’s and coverage sacks!

  36. kaimaru Says:

    @Joe

Bucs fans would be happy with a line of 4 JTSs 4 sacks 200 pressures on the season

  37. Joe Says:

    Sometimes, seems that way. 🙁

  38. OrlandoBucFAn Says:

Joe, what you don’t want to guzzle Big Storm bourbon?

  39. Bucs Guy Says:

I’ve been saying for years the draft needs to be mid-April (2 weeks earlier).

Chop = JTS. No thanks. He’s not a first round Edge rusher. There are only 3 in this draft (Turner, Verse and Latu).

  40. J Says:

    Pass.

  41. Cobraboy Says:

Dude reminds me of Gaines Adams.

  42. Dave Pear Says:

The draft is such a joke. I hate all of it. All the stupid mocks, all the idiots who tout some paraplegic from Butternut State JC.

I’m gonna stay drunk until it’s over and Jason has aced another one.

  43. Tampa Bayker Says:

Dunno, he looks pretty good in that cut-up. Even when he doesn’t get to the QB he disrupts the play enough to cause incompletions and fumbles.

  44. Capt.Tim Says:

I LOVE talking draft with informed people.
I HATE all the uninformed, that see a name they recognize, and start a campaign.
Worse yet, are the Professionals that just throw out names, with just a bare minimum of research
“ Lets see, the Bucs traded Carlton Davis, so lets mock a CB to them”
Absolutely cant stand them. We traded Davis, because Zyon took his job- and we werent paying that to a backup.
Plus we signed Brice Hall and Tavi Thomas- both of them could start in a pinch.
Josh Hayes may send Dean Packing next year.

They never look to see that we have no Left guards on the roster. Cut’em both.
From the 32nd ranked rushing team
    Lost Shaq and Devon.
From the 32nd ranked pass rush.
    Last place TE production
Yet they wanna draft Cbs , Wrs( Evans is getting old), and QBs.
    Scary dumb!

But tired of the Draft? Never! This is team building at its core. I cant wait!

  46. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Absolutely. College studs turn into NFL duds. 8 players from R1, 5 from R2, 5 from the rest of the draft will make it past 3 years
