Slim Pickings Left For Edge Rushers

March 13th, 2024

Not nearly enough.

The Bucs need an edge rusher, not some dude who had three or four sacks last year, but double-digits. If the Bucs are happy with three or four sacks, then make sure Joe Tryon-Shoyinka starts 17 games.

Joe’s readers will want to puke by the time minicamp rolls around in May unless the Bucs address this. And again, not with some Robert Ayers wannabe. Get an established edge rusher.

If a team is serious about making a run in the playoffs it must get serious about an edge rush. Demonstrating this is actually doing something about it. Hope isn’t action.

So Danielle Hunter somehow lasted over a day into legal tampering before Houston signed him. Houston already has Will Anderson. Now that’s a team demonstrating they are serious about a pass rush.

As far as the free agent pool, outside of a shot in the dark with old man Kyle Van Noy, 32, who had nine sacks for the Belicheats last year (9 ain’t 10), there’s nothing left unless the Bucs want to go dumpster diving.

Joe had his fill of that in The Lost Decade. How’d that work out?

A guy who is way expensive but is available in a trade is Khalil Mack. Joe is going to guess the Chargers will eat some of his contract in order to move him for salary cap purposes.

Same with Joey Bosa. Problem with Bosa is, the dude has turned nearly as brittle as Russell Gage. A good way to screw up a team is to get a guy who is expensive but can’t stay on the field. That will tie up a salary cap really quick.

Joe has been bellyaching for Haason Reddick for weeks and will continue to do so. Dude has four straight seasons of at least 11 sacks. Philadelphia is shopping him. He only costs $15 million a year.

What’s wrong with that, exactly?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, YaYa Diaby will blow up this fall. You don’t know how much Joe wants that to be true. But Joe is a burning bush guy. Until you have proven it, you haven’t.

Besides, if Diaby dominates next year, what else do the Bucs have? JTS’s 4-5 sacks? Anthony Nelson off the bench with 3-5 sacks? Seems like the Bucs are putting a ton of responsibility on Diaby’s shoulders to carry the edge rush.

Joe doesn’t see or understand what would be so Satanic to trade for Reddick. Is he a hidden carrier of the Ebola virus?

    The Bucs brass must REALLY be confident in the current group of pass rushers on the roster. Riddick is just sitting there for 15 mil and all we hear is crickets? D@mn shame.

  2. gotbbucs Says:

    Where’s that dead horse emoji when you need it.

  3. Mort Says:

    Reddick costs 15m now, but the Iggles are shopping him because he wants a fat raise. So he will get traded to whoever is willing to pay draft picks AND dollars.

  4. pewter941 Says:

    We neeed another Shaq Barret

  5. Beeej Says:

    Edge rushers are absurdly expensive. We could change to a 4-3 and look for DE’s

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

    lmao has someone actually described that idea as ‘Satanic’?

    I’m all for going after Reddick. That’s the only practical move for a premiere edge guy at this point for price & draft capital. If not then we are counting on the draft and at pick 26 good luck finding any guy that for sure will come in and get 10 sacks because they don’t last till pick 26 typically.

    We only have $10m in cap space right now. Overthecap says that Barret / Gage / Jensen are all still counting against the cap in that calculation at like $35M … something seems wrong about that? Are we still going to carry that much dead money and cap hits this year? Jesus lol

  7. BakerFan Says:

    Agree, again edge rushers cost money. Pony up or you will pay in loses. If Bucs had a pass rush in Detroit Bucs would of went to Santa Clara to face the Niners.

    Nothing else trade that other expensive CB that can’t catch, draft some CB’s but get pass rushers. Mean, Fast Nasty ones.

  8. The Truth be Told Says:

    This Guy is the worst thing you can say about a Football player. HE IS SOFT! Pass Rush. Pass Rush. Pass Rush!

  9. doolnutts Says:

    That is irrelevant DE’s are just as expensive if not more so because they do even.

    I would think we will be trading for someone like the JPP trade. It might not come until draft day after a team gets a DE/EDGE person. There is no way we are going into the season with just Joe & Diaby. Not when Joe was benched.

  10. Jerseybuc Says:

    Def. Need an edge rusher! Eagles have two there willing to move from. Josh sweat is available also he’s not reddick but upgrade. Would really like to see reddick come over

  11. YaYa Winfield Says:

    If only there was a way to get some young players, maybe even right out of college, for cheap….

    ……… ……

    Incorrect. 8 of the highest paid defensive players in the league are edge rushers. The other two are Jones and Donald, tackles

  13. Tampamac Says:

    With what money Joe? Hunter went for $48 mil guaranteed over 2 years. We couldn’t even get a true #1 RB that were going for roughly $10 mil/yr. It sounds good in theory until it has to be put in practice. Proven edge rushers aren’t going for ‘show me’ deals like Baker did last year.

  14. SC Bucs Fan Says:

    I was hoping we could discuss this again

  15. Beeej Says:

    We can take that third we just got and use it to trade up, though I’ve no idea who FOR

  16. Larrd Says:

    Chase Young, once he figures out he’s not getting a huge deal.

  17. Beejezus-belt Says:

    No pass rush and average corners equals the 29th pass defense in league. And now we are an expensive part time player short on the roster. This sounds like the answer.

  18. D-Rome Says:

    Good article. Perhaps Jason Licht has a few more “Diaby’s” targeted in the draft.

  19. geno711 Says:

    I’d love an elite edge rusher or an elite QB on this team.

    It will likely be extremely hard to be a top contending team with neither.

    You can win in this league lots of ways but to go to the Super Bowl, you typically need either an elite quarterback or an elite defense.

    Personally, I am not:
    1. Seeing an elite defense.
    2. Seeing an elite quarterback.

    Hopefully, I will be wrong and either 1 or 2 will happen.

  20. Bucsfantim Says:

    HEAR ME OUT –

    I agree we have a need at pass rusher and need to address it in the offseason.
    BUT:

    – We just got a 3rd Rounder in the CDIII Trade (Thank you for your service Carlton)…. Yaya was a 3rd Rounder last year and was quite productive. More than Shaq.

    Also… Maybe I’m alone in this, but I really want to see more of Markees Watts. I though he looked dangerous rushing the passer every time he was on the field.

    I guess my point is: I think we actually have some great talent on the roster that if given a chance, (or of in the case of Diaby and Cancey continuing to develop) we might not have to pull our pants down too much to address the production.

  21. Jeff Says:

    Light still doesn’t understand the importance of a pass rush. We’re looking at an 8 win team with this pass rush.

  22. TomBucsFan Says:

    Trade JTS

  23. Drew Says:

    Move Calijah Kancey to the edge

  24. Kgh4life Says:

    The Bucs consistently talks about pass rush but when free agency comes around nothing gets done. They’re still a few trades to be made to land a pass rusher. Hassan Reddick and Josh Sweat comes to mind.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Just how much money do we have now?

    Losing Davis, White, Shaq…….the defense is getting depleted…..

    Need G/C, TE, RB on offense….

    Money is scarce….will have to go to the draft…

    Maybe we will luck out with another JTS.

  26. All_da_way Says:

    Bucs can always trade for an edge rusher.

  27. DS Says:

    Hard to bank on drafting a rookie phenom, hope Licht comes up with something.

  28. Guy In the Stands Says:

    Chop Robinson, should be there for the Bucs in Rnd 1

    Guys a stud and would be an upgrade to JTS

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

    Darrell Taylor in Seattle is a RFA trade Trask to Seattle a 2nd rounder for a 2nd rounder

  30. SlyPirate Says:

    Khalil Mack
    Isn’t Mack still available? This seems like a Licht kinda player. Mack, Vea, CK could be deadly

  31. UGotRobbed Says:

    If I had my pick of any of the previously mentioned players, I would go with Mack. He would probably be expensive, but man can he put pressure on the QB!

    ——————–

    You know there’s the same number of edge rushers required to have in a 4-3 as in a 3-4, right? TWO. There’s always two on the field. DEs are edge rushers, BTW.

  34. Lord Cornelius Says:

    My gut says the value of R1 is in Powers Johnson or the OL guy from Duke. If they are gone and the UCLA edge rush guy is gone I’m feeling the trade back.

    Chop Robinson scares me a little because he only had 4 sacks his last season in 15 games but I will understand if he’s the pick (ideally after a trade back) because he has the physical traits to be elite but will probably take 2-3 years.

    I actually saw Danielle Hunter was one of Chop’s comparisons, and he had very low college production as well (1.5 sacks final season). He had 6 sacks his rookie year before averaging 10+ most seasons after.

  35. Onetrickpony Says:

    Tombucsfan: trade JTS….
    Who wants a basket ball player, any ideas ?

  36. ModHairKen Says:

    Panic sets on. On Day 1.

  37. WiscoJoe Says:

    Keep pounding the table for it Joe!! Surely Licht knows better than to go into the season banking on only Diaby. Absolutely insane if they do that. But Licht has given us reasons to believe in him.

  38. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Joe: The problem with waxing Philly in the playoffs is the Bucs are probably not a team they’d want to trade Reddick to.

  39. BillyBucco Says:

    If we don’t trade for or sign a decent edge rusher, this team won’t win more than 7 games. Atlanta is for real. We barely beat Carolina and we always split with NO. I can see us going 2-4 in the division. I was CERTAIN we would address it after trading Davis but here we are with NOTHING. I like the draft picks but the trenches usually take 3 years. Now if we needed 3 WRs we would be in good shape. Oh wait we spend 25% of the cap there already. Geez.

  40. AJ Says:

    Josh Sweat would be an intriguing part of this defense. Only making 6 million and has the potential to be a low risk high reward in a contract year for him. With Igles signing Huff we could get him for relatively cheap without selling our future in picks. Also, there are solid chances if Chop Robinson falls to us in the first round we will take him.

  41. Winny Testaverde Says:

    Maybe just maybe J. Clowney on a one year deal.

  42. Bobby M. Says:

    Shaq Barrett had 4.5 sacks…..not all that difficult to replace that production. I think the Bucs fear in signing of these guys is age/injury….along with general hunger to compete. Some of these older guys aren’t as coachable and motivated once they’ve made their money. We need depth but Yaya can replace Barrett and Nelson can replace JTS….on paper that’s an upgrade.

  43. CChead Says:

    Reddick is a Temple guy, same as Bowles. Go get him.

  44. MP Says:

    You reap what you sow. You wanted an aging receiver because of legacy. You wanted an aging linebacker because of legacy. You wanted a mediocre qb because you were scared to make a move. Now there’s no pass rushers and no money. As much as it hurt at the time, letting Derrick Brooks walk was one of the smartest moves this team made. I want to believe in Jason licht because he does have a good track record. But these moves don’t tell me of a team trying to stay relevant.

    The only bright spot in my life now, is I live in Cleveland and Mr Entertainment, America’s QB himself has come to town. I only hope he moves into my building and we can go get crab legs and hang out.

  45. Bucs Fan since 1996 Says:

    Licht & Bowles very much understand the need for a pass rush but great pass rushers don’t grow on trees. And they’ve got to build this team primarily through the draft. We have too many needs to resolve them all by signing free agents or trading for them. If we were one great pass rusher away from being a Super Bowl contender Licht would do whatever it took to get Khalil Mack here if he could. But we need to fill a number of holes and add depth in many areas.

    Licht knows how to build a Super Bowl contender. He did it before and he’s in progress of building another. If he nails another draft or
    two he’ll set the stage for some great players wanting a ring to come in as happened in 2020.

  46. BakerFan Says:

    Trade the other expensive CB who can’t catch and draft CB’s. If Bucs had a pass rush against Detroit they would of went to Santa Clara to face the Niners.

    Pass Rush, Pass Rush, Pass Rush with the Meanest, Fastest, Nastiness Pass Rushers available. Mack or Reddick would suffice.

  47. AJP Says:

    Josh Sweat making 6 million will producing 25 sacks the past 3 years would definitely be great to our edge rushers while probably only costing a 4th or a 5th rounder since Eagles signed Huff.

    I wouldnt mind more “prove it” 1 year deals like we did with Baker for people like Chase Young (if lucky) , Derek Barnett, or Okwara from the Lions.. he had a 10 sack season not too long ago.

    Theres also Chop Robinson who could fall to us in the first round. Im not too worried about edge rushers right now.

  48. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Clowney has averaged a little over 5 sacks a season for his career, so you’re looking at JTS-type production out of someone 6 years older.

  49. sdm5821 Says:

    Winny Testaverde Says:

    Maybe, just maybe J. Clowney on a one year deal.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Idea does have some merit, Granted, as Joe said, his 9.5 sacks last year weren’t 10, but he also is stout against the run and sets the edge well. Could be a good mentor for Yaya and Klancey. Better than having to face him twice a year. According to PFT, Jadeveon Clowney will visit the Panthers this week.
  52. Alanbucsfan Says:
    The year the Rams won SB, their D got most of their sacks from the DT position.
    That same year, Shaq B led Bucs with 10 sacks but rest of sacks came from committee of players incl Suh, Gholston and Vea.
    This obsession that sacks have to come from an expensive edge rusher is unwarranted.
    Pressure up the middle is equally effective
  54. MadMax Says:
    ____________
    They’re not exactly the same, but they’re close enough that players often switch from 4-3 DE to 3-4 Edge LB and vice versa. JPP was a 4-3 DE that easily switched to 3-4 OLB.
  56. LouisFriend Says:
    The alarmist Nancys and Karens on this site make me laugh. We’re not even at the start of free agency and some of you already have soaking wet britches because the Bucs didn’t plunk down $25M a year for an edge rusher.
    Relax Francis, the Bucs have a plan. Let’s see what it is before you need to go back to WalMart and restock your supply of Depends.
  57. go dawgs Says:
    the bucs love a pash rush as much as Trasks loves playing time…
  58. Ed Says:
    Bucs resigned fan favorites and high motor guys, Evans, David, Winfield and Mayfield. Good moves as these players have shown to be quality players and great off-field guys.
    Now down to business. Defensive linemen/linebackers that can replace the 2 loafers, White and JTS and the aging Will Ghoston. Barrett’s sack numbers are
    replaceable as he could no longer get after QB’s after torn ACL.
    Licht has a huge job to do improving these defensive and offensive front lines. Bring in some warriors to rebuild these lines.
    Could give 2 cents about cornerbacks because without hitting or sacking quarterbacks, it doesn’t matter who is in the secondary, all NFL quarterbacks can find an open target in 4 or 5 seconds.
  59. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    Joe Tryon-Shoyink has had his 3 years to prove he can get the job done…and while some take a little longer, they usually show some potential by now. He has not.
  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    This is NOT the only stage of the off season to get players, and I’m sure the Bucs have a plan.
    We fans want everything now, but reality doesn’t work like that.
    Wait it out. There is still the draft, and there are always trades. Licht has landed great players through trade…and he has done it throughout the off season.
    I say let’s just be patient. The picture will come together.
  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    My guess is that we will possibly see a trade for a Center at some point. Isn’t that how we got our last good one?
  64. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    Actually, I think it’s how we got our last couple good ones centers.
  65. Buc4evr Says:
    I am getting sick of seeing pictures of JTS. The guy should have never been drafted after sitting out a year in college. What was Jason thinking. The guy is a great athlete, but not a very good pass rusher. He simply has not lived up to expectations, time to move on.
  66. MelvinJunior Says:
    There you go “MadMax” – Tired of hearing about this “pass rush” stuff… We all know it. It is what it is. It’ll all work out in the end, however it does. But, C/G & Corner are priorities #1 & #1A for the draft… There are TWO ‘elite’ C/G’s and one “SUPER-ELITE” in JPJ. I don’t see him getting past Green Bay & heck, JAX could take him (maybe not now after losing Ridley)… There are SEVERAL Teams I’ve seen various ‘mocks’ projecting from Miami to Pittsburgh or Philly! I’m all for ‘trading-up’ & gettin’ your guy… Quality over Quantity, all day. The kid looks pretty special & NASTY… Plus, he’s versatile and has played both C and G positions (so has Barton). I really like ‘the thought’ of pairing him with Wirfs for the next DECADE… I like it A LOT. Also, there’re a handful of nice looking CB’s who’ll be available in the 2nd… Maybe, “Kool-aide” slips late into Round 2 due to his recent injury issues!? I like Mitchell, but he’ll be long gone… I like the local kid T.J. Tampa. It’s possible, but looks like he will be, too. We have that extra 3rd now from Detroit & I’m all for using it if it helps to land JPJ. Next, pick-up an EDGE with the other 3rd… One with the ‘build’ and a motor who LOVES FOOTBALL, alas YaYa!!!! Then, you can go RB/CB/EDEGE again, with your 4th Round Pick… Best Available. I like “Sweet Baby Ray” Davis A LOT, being a Kentucky season ticket holder since birth, but I don’t like, His Age tho… He hits the hole quick and hard with a purpose. We’ll see what happens.
    Spend spend spend spend…..and spend some more. Then listen to the fan base cry uncontrollably because the team is in cap hell again.
    How did we get to the point of having $80 million in dead cap last year? Oh yea, by restructuring everyone’s contract so we could pay big money for aging veterans that became cancerous to the culture of the team.
    Licht won’t go down that rabbit hole again, sorry folks. We will draft, identify free agent bargains, and then reward our homegrown talent. Rinse and repeat.
    Ryan Jensen and Shaq Barrett were low level free agents when we signed them. They ended up being the corner stones of our Super Bowl team.
    Trust the process just a little bit people.
  69. Joe Says:
    The alarmist Nancys and Karens on this site make me laugh. We’re not even at the start of free agency and some of you already have soaking wet britches because the Bucs didn’t plunk down $25M a year for an edge rusher.
    Relax Francis, the Bucs have a plan
    Yeah, the plan is called “hope.” 🤦‍♂️
  70. sweti_yeti Says:
    Jason Licht isn’t going to trade for Reddick unless the compensation is reasonable and they feel they could get a contract extension done as a condition of the trade.
    Also, why does Philly want to trade him?
    The Bucs have 3 guys who were rookies last year that they’ve already spent time developing. They have draft capital invested in 2 of them. Sometimes, when you’ve invested, you do rely on hope, if you’ve seen enough evidence in practice to think the guys can step up.
    I trust our front office to do what they feel makes the most sense to upgrade the team, while managing the cap over the next couple years, still digging out from the “all-in” investments that have significant dead cap legacies.
    I’ll be excited for a move for Reddick if they do it, as long as they don’t give up too much and they can get him into a new contract… But I seriously don’t expect it.
    I really don’t see a signing in free agency for a pass rusher. Whatever is left is probably far too pricey, and then when you get to the next tier, you’re talking about guys who aren’t going to give us much more than guys we already have.
    The more likely route is that we draft a pass rusher and keep developing our young guys.
    Chase Young??? Why aren’t we kicking the tires on him?
  73. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:
    Hello Joe. Haven’t heard you rant about this before!
    Let me tell you about this little thing called the “salary cap”. It prevents teams from gaining an advantage via excessive spending. The Bucs just signed all their internal free agents, and now barely have enough money to sign their upcoming draft class. Can they create a little bit more money? Sure! But to afford a free agent 10-sack guy?? Those are some of the most expensive guys in the league!
    We will be lucky if we can get a budget edge guy like Carl Lawson, Derek Barnett, or Kyle Van Noy. Otherwise, we are going to take this year to see what we have in YaYa Diaby and Markees Watts, and then address the position in the draft and next year.
    Repeat after me: SALARY CAP
  74. Simeon4HOF Says:
    I think our Edge Rusher to compliment Diaby falls to us in Round #1, as in Latu or Robinson
  75. Joe in Michigan Says:
    There’s several videos out there of Chase Young dogging it on the field, even including some plays in the Super Bowl. If you’re not gonna give your all in the Super Bowl, it’s not a good sign.
  76. Capt.Tim Says:
    Teams will be making alot of hard cuts today, to be cap compliant.
    Plus we need to sign AWJ, to free up cap space.
    Lets let those two things happen, and see where we are at tomorrow.
    But yes- WE HAVE to address the pass rush. 29th ranked pass defense will choke our offense all year.
    If Jason Licht has a flaw, its building and drafting a pass rush
  77. Mike Johnson Says:
    Bucs need a Bonafide Pass rusher like a hamburger needs a bun. Better hope Latu or Chop Robinson is there in the 1st.
  78. Duane in Sanford Says:
    You arent just looking for a pass rusher, you are actually looking for the one with the hot upcoming season. We dont really draft those types, or do a bad job at developing them. I dont think Coach Bowles puts as much of a premium on them because of his scheme. He seems to like overpaying for his secondary guys. Its been so long since we had one that I am not even sure of what that looks like or how it would impact our success or failure. I will still prefer another lineman to help improve the run game. Its a scoring league.
  79. Defense Rules Says:
    Pewter941 … ‘We neeed another Shaq Barret’.
    Would LOVE the 2019 version of Shaq Barrett (he of 19.5 sacks), but beyond that can’t see spending big money we don’t have on an undersized OLB (6’1″ & 240 lbs) who’s essentially smaller than Shaq (6’2″ & 250 lbs). For that matter, Reddick is roughly the same size as Devin White (6′ & 237 lbs) but not as fast (4.42 sec for White vs 4.52 sec for Reddick).
    Reddick has been on several pretty good DLines in these past several years & has surely benefitted from that (kinda like Shaq benefitted by playing with Suh, JPP & Vea in 2019?). I’m not convinced that he’d be that effective (averaged 13 sacks/year over the past 4 years) in our defense.
    I think we’re still very early in the FA process & have a LOT of holes yet to fill (Safety, CB, ILB, OLB/DE, RB, TE, WR, C, LG just for the starters/key rotational players, and then depth (such as WR?) after that. That’s 8 key players, and we’ll at best get maybe 3 max 4 in the draft (if we’re lucky).
    There are a LOT of players out there in FA who could obviously help us, but that ugly $$$-thingie keeps rearing its’ ugly head. As in ‘We don’t really have any’. After signing our Top-5 FAs plus several others, JL’s back to bargain basement shopping. For my part, I’d just love to see us bring back Whitehead, SMB & Edwards ($10 mil for all 3 would be nice).
    It depends upon Licht’s intent. Joey Bosa is younger than Mack and though he’s good, he hasn’t lived up to the hype. Signing either or both means major contract restructuring.
    This draft isn’t deep for pass rushers.
  82. heyjude Says:
    Sadly, Joey has had some injuries.
  83. HC Grover Says:
    Slim Pickens himself would be better than Plan 9.
