Report: Bucs Grinding To Re-Sign Baker Mayfield

March 8th, 2024

Sleeves rolled up.

Joe always gets a chuckle when hearing references to “working hard” in the NFL.

The NFL is the pinnacle of football. Guys are handsomely paid millions, including front office suits, coaches and players. Hell, even tackling dummies with a heartbeat on the practice squad make hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The absolute bare minimum Joe would expect from professionals compensated like that is to work hard. Can you imagine “working hard” in the NFL as a lauded attribute?

So Joe got to laughing when reading a recent missive by NFL insider for The Athletic, Dianna Russini. She said the Bucs are slaving away to try to get pending free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield to sign a new contract.

If the Falcons miss on Cousins, they may look to Baker Mayfield, if Tampa can’t reach an agreement with him after his outstanding season. When I last checked in with sources, Mayfield and the Bucs were working hard to strike a deal, especially after they locked up WR Mike Evans.

Joe is starting to believe one reason Mayfield hasn’t re-signed yet, maybe the biggest reason, is Mayfield’s camp wants to see what Kirk Cousins fetches.

From everything Joe can gather, Cousins will set the market this month for free agent quarterbacks. Once Cousins is signed, whether it is by the Vikings or another team, then the dominoes will begin to fall.

And yes, that will include Mayfield if he’s a free agent when the bell rings next week.

  1. K_bassuka Says:

It seems that Maybefield’s camp understand that his best season is behind him and they need to make as much money as possible. Either way, the Bucs shouldn’t overpay for an average QB. Only bad teams and front offices overpay for QBs and doing so normally doesn’t end well.

  2. BucU Says:

We’ll see if Baker pulls a Dave Canales on us. I like Baker and I think he’ll be signing very soon but I’m sure the Bucs have a number they’re not going to exceed to sign him. If he wants to gamble AGAIN with a new team then bye bye Baker. The ball is in your court.

  3. Randal Parmer Says:

I love Baker as a BROWNS fan I watched him turn the franchise around from CELLAR DWELLER to ab9ve average with NO HELP from the front office or the owner. The organization is simply a joke and I don’t see that ever changing. I hope Baker is smart enough to be reasonable when it comes to this contract but I believe he is worth 3 yr 100 to 105 fully guaranteed with incentives for NFC championship games and Superbowl that could make his contract worth 40 or more per year. I would make him.put his m0ney where his mouth is. I believe he believes in himself. Good luck!
    .

  4. Pewter Power Says:

Not sure why he’s waiting for the “dominos” to fall. At this point in their career he’s better but Not Bucs fault he got scammed or that he had no offers last season or that he has to sign for 4 million so why should we make up for his losses

Baker is looking for the biggest payday possible and probably will end up pricing himself out of Tampa or someone will give him more money than we are willing to offer. His camp definitely wants to test free agency.

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

Yea – I’m with you Joe on the “working hard” guys in the NFL. I never viewed playing football or orchestrating a team for an astronomical salary as a grind. Now you take that poor schlep wearing a neon vest digging a hole on the side of I4 in mid August while getting paid peanuts. That dude is grinding.

As for Mayfield. He’ll get signed barring some enormous implosion by the Bucs or Mayfield’s camp. You don’t franchise tag a safety over a QB that just had his best season unless your d@mn sure you can resign that QB.

  6. Show Me the TDs Says:

I think the main reason Baker hasn’t signed is that he is a mediocre, 9-8 QB who wants to be paid like an elite QB. The Bucs front office realizes that last year was his ceiling and are being smart about this. It would be stupid to overpay, knowing that for the next 2 or 3 years the Superbowl is a pipe dream. Either sign Cousins or develope a QB for the future. Mayfield ain’t it!

  7. Boss Says:

Meh……. Let him test the market

  8. ATLBUC Says:

    ——————///————
That front office and ownership gave him a top 10 defense and a top 5 running game.

  9. QueGB5 Says:

Baker had a good season but not an outstanding one. His number $30MM/yr at the max and a 3 year deal at the max. We gotta have real good skill players around an a great defense to win a chip w/ Baker because he isn’t an elite QB, but there’s only like 3 in the league.

  10. Joe in Michigan Says:

But, but, but…What about the loud mouth “fans” that don’t like Mayfield and would’ve rather lost with Trask? What about the naysayers that say there’s NO WAY HE’LL EVER HAVE ANOTHER SEASON LIKE LAST YEAR, then say he was mediocre and should’ve been benched? What about Rod Munch, who says that Justin Fields is a “better player”, without a shred of evidence to back that up? 🤔

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I choose to believe a deal is extremely close to getting done. I do not believe he will hit the open market.

The legal tampering period will let his agent feel out his market value…but I’m guessing that Mayfield wants a deal done before he officially hits the market.

I may be skeptical of his abilities, but I also sense he is a standup team guy. The Bucs took a chance on him, and they’ve shown loyalty to quality veterans in the past. Great organization too. Really, one of the best.

At most, he just wants a fair figure, and that figure would be revealed during the legal tampering period, if others are interested.

  12. brooks Says:

Cousins would be nice in pewter

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

At this point, we’ve all stated what we think his true value is. Now we just have to see what the deal ends up being.

I’m sure it will look like an inflated number on the surface, but when a close look is taken, it will hopefully be easier to accept.

  14. BucsFanMarc Says:

Baker originally wanted 44mil per season. Really because even Tom Brady didn’t make that. While yes this is the best season thus far in his career, he is so on and off it may remain that way. If I were the bucs seeing that Mayfield doesn’t have such a great track record I would be shopping other QBs.

“Baker originally wanted 44mil per season.”

I would take that report with a grain of salt.

Season of lies extends to bloggers trying to impress with their “sources”

    “after his outstanding season”

    * 9-8, one game over .500, in worst division in the NFL.
    * 8-8 going into last game, a must-win, and he can’t put the football in the end zone, we win 9-0 on 3 field goals.
    * After the playoff win over the weak Eagles, with the Detroit playoff game on the line, he throws a pick to seal the loss.
    * Outstanding!
    * Repeat after me: Franchise!

Brilliant! Couldnt have made it any clearer to the fans and front office. Hes constantly taking big shots and being lauded as tough for limping back onto the field only to get the ball batted down because he cant see over the o-line.

  17. Let's Go Bake Says:

Since ’98 only 4 #1 overall drafted QBs have won a super bowl. 1) Peyton Manning won SB 41, 50. 2) David Carr (as a back up), so let’s move on. 3) Eli Manning won SB 42, 46. Mathew Stafford won SB 56. I guess everybody else sucks and don’t deserve to be paid average money for the NFL. Maybe Baker should move on. He’s not wanted in Tampa anyway. He took 4 mil last year to prove a point. He proved it….and to more than just Tampa. I hope he leaves cause these fans are as bad as Cleveland fans….land that’s saying alot!

  19. Gipper Says:

Sounds like none of the complete rubes who post here have ever bought a car from a dealer. It’s called a negotiation and an informed buyer and seller tries to get as much information as possible to complete a deal. There is plenty of time to get this accomplished. As Joe has said there is a lot of money sloshing around in the NFL and both parties will agree on something or they won’t.

  20. Marky Mark Says:

Offer him stock in man u as non cash compensation.

  21. jarrett Says:

giving Baker a max deal would be a huge mistake

    bro is a game manager

  22. Levin Says:

It’s fun reading people posting here that they “believe” Baker will sign. Because they have no insider information, what they’re posting is what they “want to believe.” Like the many posts about Baker being elite and Evans wanting to play with an elite quarterback, not Trask, and then Evans signing without Baker being signed and Trask being the only signed quarterback. LMAO. You can’t make this stuff up.

  23. ChiBuc Says:

Baker seems to be purely motivated by disrespect. Doubt him in a playoff game and he comes out balling. Granted, he always seems to mix in some gametime inconsistencies only to rally again when the chips are down (problem is when sed inconsistency is a boneheaded game ending interception). On the other hand, when all expect a win out of Baker (see ATL & NC games), Baker plays disinterested which translates as average. The fear is once he has a fat contract and nothing to prove after Licht and company massage that chip off his shoulder, which Mayfield do we end up paying guaranteed millions to, the former or the latter?

  24. Mark Reese Says:

Bucs got cheap with Doug Williams…. He went to Washington and won the super Bowl MVP. Bucs gave up on Steve Young…. He goes to San Francisco, wins the super Bowl and now is in the Hall of Fame. Bucs gave up on Vinny Testaverde…. He had a 21-year career. Bucs gave up on Trent Dilfer… He goes to Baltimore and wins the super Bowl. How many more quarterbacks are they going to give up on only to have them go to stellar careers elsewhere?

  25. Bucnjim Says:

Today sounds like a good day to sign Mayfield. It’s Friday and payday. Enjoy the weekend.

  26. RGA Says:

The Bucs will be around a 500 team with Mayfield, average QB, average team. I doubt new season ticket holder will be lining up in excitement to see Mayfield if and when he is signed.

  27. ModHairKen Says:

I love the idiots who want to sign Kirk Cousins, claiming Baker is average.

    What has Cousins ever done?

  28. Marky Mark Says:

Excellent point Mark Reese. Chibuc .. yes Bman is motivated by Perceived slights. But there is an alternate angle on that. Say he does get that phat contract… This board and the national media who are dying for Chefb to fail just to be right and will crow about how the Bucs just got conned into another Dwat has not hardly played in two years deal. Doughboy will read that and think…I will show them…

  29. Marky Mark Says:

If joe is right on cousins Bmans agent is terrible. Cousins is an over the hill injury prone average QB and below average in p!ayoffs.

  30. Buccos Says:

Cousins is a better pure passer. Mayfield is grittier and younger. The age difference is the biggest thing and why I would rather have Mayfield. He is less brittle and injury prone. But Cousins sure can sling it

  31. pmarcello Says:

Common business knowledge defines a Deal as taking place when both party s mutually feel that they have got the better part of the bargain. So all the Baker haters are piling up on Baker for daring to ask to be paid fairly. Very nice of you all to be so jealously protective of the Glazer’s money.

Tell you something. This is not the Bucs first Rodeo and I am sure Jason knows what he is doing. Ditto for Baker and his agent. So the Bucs came in ten low with their offer to give themselves room [the first rule of negotiation] and Baker’s agent comes in nine high to “give themselves room”. Looks to be a pretty routine NFL contract negotiation.

What sucks’ is all this cheap dissing and deprecating and slandering of Bakers talents which inspite of these morons i considerable an promises to blossum into much more if he stays here. He is after just entering hid prime.

All this false dribbling that he is mediocre and certain to regress after this year is pure horse manure .When the Bucs do sign him for Beaucoup dollars and he proceeds to win the super bowl then it will be the trolls’ on this snake pit site that should leave town.

  32. Beeej Says:

“Re-sign Baker, he nearly got us to the championship game!”

“Baker sucks, he’s barely average, roll with the guy who mops the floor!”

There, now you don’t have to read the rest of the thread

  33. Kgh4life Says:

If some other team want to overpay for Baker, so be it. Look at the Gaints and Daniel Jones.

  34. T. McGee Says:

Mayfield is Tim Tebow with better marketing.

  35. D Cone Says:

Doubt that Cousins and Mayfield are going to create a Bidding War but then I’ve see a few fights over some pretty ugly woman at closing time in my day.

  36. TRUMP 2024 Says:

3 years/$90 million, fully guaranteed. If he proves last year was the norm, the Bucs get a cheap 3rd year for their risk. If he peaked in 2023, then this may end up looking like 2 yrs/$90 mil. Either way, I think there is equal risk/reward for Bucs & Baker and both sides should be happy with that. If he’s not, good luck getting more elsewhere. I’m not so sure it’s out there.

  37. Bucfan1988 Says:

This negotiation between the sides “smells” bad………

Based on what I see now, I actually DO believe the article from BucsReport about Mayfield’s agent asking $44 MILL and there being an almost $20 MILL difference between the sides….

This agent is looking at Daniel Jones insanely moronic contract that was offered to him last year then saying Mayfield is better than Jones….
What a ridiculous precedent that contract set for this year……

Licht better stay FIRM And not give in to these asinine numbers.

I’m totally cool for moving on with bringing in a cheap veteran and having task battle for the starting position again this preseason.

The savings we have on a QB contract, we can put that towards fortifying some holes in our defense.

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Stop being cheap Bucs. PAY DA MAN!!!

  39. Show Me the TDs Says:

Does anyone else notice that the Baker fans hurl a lot of insults on this here chat? You sound like children. “If the Bucs don’t sign my lover I’m going to cry, stomp my feet, and get mad!!! Kind of reminiscent of Baker’s history. Wow, that was an epiphany! As an adult, I like to employ logical, intelligent thought to come to a conclusion on my opinions. BAKER IS MEDIOCRE, and worth no more than $23M per season.

  40. Robert Says:

Good riddance if he leaves. He had a career year last year but so did Geno Smith a few years ago. We all seen how that turned out. Way too many QBs in the draft this year to overpay. He will fail if he goes anywhere else. How many teams tried Baker? Gardner -Johnson said it best and his last pass in the playoffs sums up Baker Mayfield.

I love Baker as a BROWNS fan I watched him turn the franchise around from CELLAR DWELLER to ab9ve average with NO HELP from the front office or the owner.

Browns Payroll 2016 was 153 million
Browns Payroll 2017 was 229 million (up 76 million)
Browns Payroll 2018 was 245 million (up 16 million)

Help was already there when Mayfield stepped in. Good solid defense, a great running game with top of the list O Line.

Mayfield’s part was small and only a clown throws out statements that mislead and are just not true.

Statements like he won two Playoff Games (One with a Broken Down Big Ben throwing multiple picks and team self fell apart. one against a Philly team that was just plain broken.

Statements like He’s a Pro bowl QB ( when top 3 QB’s opted out and gets out on a pass)

If Mayfield has anything going for him is Timing. Especially with his Passing.
That that away and well you seen it at Cleveland and Carolina

  42. Tony Says:

They probably should’ve franchise tagged Baker & then resigned Antoine to some kind of deal.

  43. gotbbucs Says:

If anything, this gives me even more respect for Licht and his front office team. They could easily cave and just give him what he wants, but they believe in their process. Good for them.
The market will dictate what Mayfield is worth. If he wants to go start over somewhere again with a new group and get his income taxed to death then he isn’t all that smart and he risks blowing up his career again. Any QB that would consider the Patriots as a viable option right now must have suicidal tendencies.
There’s alot of QB’s that can throw for 4000 yards with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin at reciever. I mean, Baker Mayfield did it last year.
Baker won me over to a point last year. I’m not ready to declare him a franchise QB just yet. He’s essentially Doug Flutie right now. You love him for three or four years, but eventually the results need to be better than what they are. I think Baker could put up really big numbers because he does have the arm talent, but he isn’t going to carry a team like a Pat Mahomes or Josh Allen. The rest of the roster needs to be really good for that to happen.
I can take him or leave him right now. I’d like the continuity, but I also trust Jason Licht to make a smart decision to fill the position.

I am willing to take that chance with BM. All of the QBs listed are at least twice as good as him.

screw it….go test FA stupid little diva

  47. JD12 Says:

I really don’t want to see the Bucs overpay for Baker. I am not totally out on short money for Russ Wilson and drafting a guy that they can mold for a year or two at the back of round 1 or round 2 but again we all thought that was gonna happen with Trask and it seems like the later is not in the QB picture. If we can bolster the O-Line, get a primary running back to help out White, the offense can get going with a vet QB. Confident that Licht can work the cap to keep this team in contention but maybe I am optimistic today.

  48. Daniel Hammond Says:

We don’t need Baker please quit wasting our time the Buccaneers need to go get them a quarterback there’s plenty of them out there that could do just as good if not better than Baker Mayfield and we ain’t got to spend 40 million dollars or 35 he’s not even worth 25 million so tired of hearing about him he had one good year in what six or seven in the league come on are We that stupid as an organization we’ve seem to be doing everything right up until now please don’t screw it up by signing Baker Mayfield unless he’s coming in for 20 million a year he’s not worth more than that will end up sucking for many many years if you guys sign into some huge deal and there’ll be no way out of it everybody will blame the coach

  49. Buc1987 Says:

Daniel Hammond…periods and comas would do wonders…

  50. GhostofBrady Says:

Baker gave up $3M of his $18M 5th year rookie contract option to try to win the starting job with Mark Rhule’s Panthers after OTAs. He took a pay cut on guaranteed money to win the starting job on a terrible team already in flight. That is the immature version of Baker.

Baker bet on a $4M deal with Tampa and had to prove it to bring that up to a league minimum $7M for non-rookie QB starters. That was less than some backups with barely any snaps this year were making. He could have asked for much more money. No way Bowles thinks Trask saves his job. Was that immature. Probably not, he bet on himself.

Maybe Baker has matured and feels he is due for his gamble. I can certainly see anyone with that history to finally feel it was time to ask something closer to near market value and long-term success options. The mature thing to do would be to know what your market value and don’t self-fleece yourself again. Especially if Tampa is not willing to commit to more than 2 years.

Tampa gives him the best option for success in 2024 and maybe 2025. I look at Minnesota with an OC/HC running the same offense to great success and a stack offense playing in a dome. Baker will not have to worry about who his OC will be after 2025 with the Vikings. It’s O’Connell. HC/OCs don’t get poached to other teams. If Baker balls out in Tampa, will Coen stay after 2025 or will Baker add yet another OC to his belt notch after Coen becomes New Orlean’s HC?

Atlanta has an owner that will spend to win and a new HC that is aggressive and hungry. Morris has something to prove his third time leading a team. If the Falcons don’t get Cousins and they are willing to give Baker a 3 year guarantee and spend a first rounder on an O-Linemen or another WR with that 11th pick in a stack WR class, that is something a mature QB would need to consider if Tampa is only offering a 2-year deal. Handing the ball off to Bijon, throwing to Kyle Pitts and Drake London. Drafting another top WR this year. That projects better in 2025 and 2026. If not Atlanta, Cousins won’t be in the NFC South. Baker will still be the best QB in the division running the offense all 4 team now deploy.

Licht needs to commit to 3 years or probably see Baker walk. Hope they can compromise and make it work.

  51. portlypirate Says:

Progress where he was in 1 game for 2 plays & blew the 1yd line TD, so that’s progress?

  70. ^^mtn^^ Says:

    @BakerBucs

If he’s still practicing like he did his rookie year, then he’s not making progress.

Licht has public stated this. A rouse? Perhaps, but I’ve seen Trask play & word is, the organization is happy to have him.

Quite sure he learned a bunch from Brady, Wolford & Baker

Getting nervous about Baker now. It is getting too close to the wire. Looks like it may be Free Agency for him. Disappointed if it ends up that way.

  72. Pewter Power Says:

It’s all Lichts fault he’s in this situation. He drafted Trask and he has to know when Brady was under center that guy want good enough, duh Brady was going to retire how could you not prepare and draft a quarterback in any round as back up now you’re being squeezed by an average quarterback

Enough!!! It wasn’t only the media talking about blowing this team up after Brady left. Bucs took a shot at baker and he had a good season. He’s not worth 40 million a year.

  73. Joe George Says:

Baker Mayfield is average QB if the Bucs give him a huge contract it will be a mistake worse than Russell Wilson Denver conrract

  74. infomeplease Says:

If BM6 is smart he will sign for slightly above average money leaving the Bucs some cash to improve the rest of the roster. That would be a win win for all involved!

  75. Rpelog Says:

Bengal’s Joe Burrow signs a five-year, $275 million deal making him the highest-paid player in NFL history on an annual basis at $55 million per year. Baker’s record against Burrow is 3-1. Baker deserves more.

  76. Student of the Game Says:

pay Baker 2024 franchise tag going rate for QB for 3 years with options beyond for franchise tag value. See how easy that is. If you don’t, he and Atlanta will beat you 2X a year until he retires.

  77. ^^mtn^^ Says:

    @SOTG

Probably split with Falcons and go 5-1 in division either way

If Cousins goes to Atlanta, my money is Baker going to Minnesota. If Cousins stays in Minnesota, Baker stays in Tampa unless Atlanta throws a lot of money at him. That Minnesota team is the best long-term out of Atlanta, Minnesota and Tampa. They have $40M a year to pay a QB set aside for Cousins so they already planned for it. And those weapons and O-Line are topnotch. O’Connell has been calling plays at a high level the last two years. They ain’t rolling with Josh Dobbs, Fields or a rookie. They may jump at giving Baker 3 years $105M guaranteed with 4th year option to kick it to $160M for $40M AAV. The only downside is that division is stacked and playing Goff twice in regular season. And the weather is like Cleveland not as nice as Tampa.

  79. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Still think Pittsburgh is a possibility for Bakey, depending on how talks go with Wilson.

That’s the only way the Steelers will compete in that division, Wilson or Baker

The year before last y’all were blamed Lefty, last year it was Toilet Bowles.
So, who’s the problem? The coach or quarterback?
$300 million is the starting point at quarterback.
Team friendly is not about the money, but how the contract is structured.
