No. 3 QB John Wolford Re-Signs; Brings Critical Experience

March 15th, 2024

Bucs No. 3 QB John Wolford.

Bucs No. 3 quarterback John Wolford is known by some as a super genius at One Buc Palace for his football IQ, and that should be more prominent this season as he played in Los Angeles for new Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht took to X to announce that Wolford re-signed today for 2024.

Does this mean the Bucs are not drafting a quarterback next month? As much as No. 2 QB Kyle Trask is beloved at One Buc Palace, it’s hard to believe Tampa Bay will add a fourth gunslinger.

Wolford, 28, last saw real NFL game action in December of 2022 with the Rams. Baker Mayfield replaced him there as starting quarterback. Wolford is 2-2 as a regular season starter in his career.

    Wile E. Wolford.

now there’s one less spot :0

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

Glad the Bucs signed their 2d best quarterback

  5. SlyPirate Says:

    Two problems with this …

    1. Waste of a roster spot and cap space.

    Bigger issue …

    2. Waste of time. Licht and co should be working overtime to find a pass rush vet via FA or trade. We won the Super Bowl with Suh, JPP, and Shaq. It’s not rocket science. Sign pass rush vets.

    I like it.

  7. Beeej Says:

    Ya gotta have 3 qb’s

  8. Capt.Tim Says:

Woolford will be our 2nd string QB. He played in Coen’s system
I expect Devin Leary to be a late round pick or UFA signing.
He was amazing in 2021. Went backwards ever since.
But hes got a GREAT NFL arm. Knows Coens offense, and has the potential to improve.
I think he’ll be our 3rd string QB. He is very “Mayfield” like

  9. Lakeland Steve Says:

So does this mean that Wofford and Trask are going to battle in camp to see who carries the clipboard? Wofford has at least played complete NFL games.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

Well I guess we can forget about drafting a QB in April.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Adam

With this and the Opeta signing we are down to 7 open slots plus a long snapper.

Poor Zack Trinner is waiting for that phone to ring…

    LOL!

  12. Beeej Says:

    We have greater needs

  13. Dave Pear Says:

If Baker goes down, this dude is the back up QB. He has played quality snaps in the NFL, and unlike some idiots, the coaches have seen enough of Trask to know what they have in him.

  14. PewterStiffArm Says:

They can still draft a quarterback if a qualified one drops in their lap, you never know. The Trask trade would be on and maybe he can have a fresh start elsewhere.

    ^^^^^^^^^^
Wolford is not guaranteed to make the roster, he’ll have to earn that spot.

He probably signed for less that $2 mil, or less than .0078 of the salary cap.

I want a pass rusher too, but this move won’t prohibit that from happening.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

The only fresh start Trask is going to get is as a sales executive for a line of rowing machines or T-ball stands.

  17. Esteban85 Says:

They obviously are no longer in the QB market

  18. Proudbucsfan Says:

Most of you guys that say, John Wolford is better than Trask are complete idiots. The guy has 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions in his career.

  19. Proudbucsfan Says:

Hey Dave Pear, why don’t you look up the guys stats before you run your mouth

  20. Proudbucsfan Says:

Oh, he’s also fumbled 3 times in 7 games.

  21. Koryc Says:

    Super Bowl winning quarterback????!!! Hahahahah

  22. NCBuc Says:

Hey Dave Pear…… in his NFL career, he has thrown 1TD-5 INT. He’s a backup alright! SMDH

  23. Bucs33Saints14! Says:

    Dean Wormer says:
    – Kyle Jacob Trask has no grade point average.
    – Mr Wolford-arsky: zero point zero.
    – Mr “Insert your favorite failed Bucs QB name here”: Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.

  24. D Cone Says:

If it comes down to a situation where you would need a third QB in the season or game Wolford will give you a better chance than Christian McCaffrey.

I doubt that Mayfield will ever get injured in a Championship Game it could happen.

Having a 3rd emergency QB does not count as a roster spot so for the price it’s a low cost insurance policy.

As far as whether Trask or Wolford os better? My wife has a 9MM in the night stand an a Pump Shot Gun in the closet. Neither are top of the line and never have been fired. All I know is that if they are ever needed they are available and will give her at least a fighting chance.

  25. Marky Mark Says:

Start Wolford now….note this iz a sarcastic spoof of the Traskidiots

  26. Marky Mark Says:

Good tip from above on Devin Leary. That makes Baker, Wo!ford and the KY guy all played for Liam. Trask is long long gone after the draft people.

  27. Bucblind Says:

Trask passer rating 39.6%, completion percentage 30%, just sayin

  28. Dave Pear Says:

Kyle’s Trashkan may not have the awareness to market a line of rowing machines or T-ball stands, come to think of it. He might be best in a slow moving quality control job for a city municipal water unit.

If he lives a modest lifestyle and invested in low risk securities the only rowing machine he might use before he faces the question of what What am I going to do today? If he invested in city municipal bonds t build a new water plant and not Brother’s Bonds or Incest Investing he will be just fine.

    D cone, LOL!

  31. Conner50 Says:

It’s hilarious how all the hate on Trask is simply from baker fanatic fan boys, say whatever you want about the kid but Trask will most certainly be the second string qb. Wolford will be the practice squad quarterback like last season, trask out played baker in camp from what Joe posted. So you think Wolford will outperform him? Nah seriously doubt it.

  32. Dave Pear Says:

Kyle Trashk processes his reads at the speed of smell. At least he can get to his second after 3 or 4 seconds, though. That’s an improvement.

He’s not, never has been and never will be NFL material.

  33. Conner50 Says:

    @Dave Pear
Guess you never watch pre season highlights because Trask played very well with back ups. He’s also played outstanding when he gets the opportunity, you must be a gator hater is all

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Rudy Carpenter and Joey Hamilton looked awesome against waitresses and bartenders too. Preseason means about as much as a college highlight reel. Ryan Griffin looked fantastic throwing to Tanner Hudson against insurance salesmen and pole dancers.

  35. Conner50 Says:

Well he’s our second string quarterback so if he gets put in the game and actually does good keep that same energy

  36. Dave Pear Says:

Trashk will be the 3rd stringer.

  37. Conner50 Says:

Nah he will be dressing out for each game ready to go in if baker gets hurt while Wolford isn’t even at the game. Trask > Wolford

  38. J Marzullo Says:

Proudbucsfan Says: “You guys that say John Wolford is better than Trask are complete idiots. The guy has 1 touchdown and 5 interceptions in his career.”

Yup. Wolford has 1 TD and 5 INTs in 7 games. Terrible. Plus he is very small. He took like 3 snaps in preseason before being carted off the field. Why is he even signed as a QB? He should be assigned to the coaching staff for his smarts and kept off the field.

  39. GhostofBrady Says:

Let’s see how this plays out in the offseason practices. Kyle deserves an opportunity to fight for a starting spot on another club or be the clear backup in case Baker gets hurt. There were what 60+ starting QBs in the league last year? If Baker is the guy for the next 2 years and gets hurt, Kyle will get the opportunity to put up good tape for other teams to take a flier on him. And Tampa would get rewarded with a 3rd to 6th round pick in compensation. We’ve paid chump change for his rookie contract with getting the value of having him be an insurance QB. We did not have to cash in on the insurance because Brady and Baker do a good job of taken care of themselves and work hard not to relinquish the reigns. Availability is reliability. Insurance is not a bad thing. We squeaked into the playoffs the last two years. Every game was important so every game Baker and Brady did not miss was important.

If Kyle Trask can learn to take calculated risk and put the balls where they need to go to push the offense forward, then Wolford is a 3rd string contingency who is basically another QB coach. If Kyle’s numbers look good but it is all dump offs and not rewarding receivers for getting open 15 yards or more downfield, look for Trask to be traded during camp to a more needier team that are more traditional offenses versus the McVay offense which thrives on reading defenses and throwing to the predicted open spots.

I think the first Preseason game will point the needle on Trask. Another offseason in this offense with similar OC, his grasp of the offense will need to show. If he does well, it’s a win win for Tampa. Draft picks or solid backup. If he does poorly, it not a total lost. We’ll get 6th round value for him. Baker won’t see the field until the second Preseason game.
