How Close Are The Bucs And Baker Mayfield?

March 6th, 2024

“Sorry Jason, I meant ‘bucks’ not ‘Bucs.'”

So yesterday a Baker Mayfield status report surfaced.

It seems a member of the local pen and mic club was tipped off that pending free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Bucs basically have a deal in place and an announcement come as early as today.

Jenna Laine of ESPN later had a follow-up to that Twitter (as did other media) and her intel is telling her a far different story.

@JennaLaineESPN: Saw a report floating around about a new deal for Baker Mayfield being “essentially done.” That’s not true, per multiple sources involved.

OK, “not done” could mean many things. Technically, a handshake deal could be in place but “not done” meaning pen hasn’t yet met paper.

Does “not done” mean the only thing not agreed upon (yet) is that Team Glazer hasn’t signed off to stock Mayfield’s stadium suite with Big Storm Beer? Does it mean Mayfield doesn’t have to pay extra for an upgraded road hotel room?

Or, could it be that the Bucs and Mayfield are not yet in the same area code on a price?

“Not done” could mean all sorts of trivial things and not the meat and potatoes of the deal. Joe remembers reporting on a Friday in 2019 that the Bucs would announce their new head coach the following Tuesday and fans should expect it to be Bruce Arians. Several local media members ran to Twitter to scream fake news. And yes, the Bucs officially hired Arians on that Tuesday.

I have no doubt Bakefield is in. None.

Rick Stroud blocked me on Twitter that day for simply saying “Happy Tuesday, Rick!” He was not happy to be wrong that day. Too funny!

  3. Bucswild813 Says:

Hopefully the hold up is the prospect of signing Cousins.

The important thing is what has Beckles heard. That’s the lie.

  5. Towered Says:

Could it be? Could conventional talking head wisdom not prevail for the first time ever?

  6. Towered Says:

Russ plus the FA signings to give the Bucs a running game. Way better use of cash.

  7. Bucswild813 Says:

I agree Towered. I’d take Russ + Henry over Baker all day. As long as we draft Penix.

  8. Hopein1hand… Says:

I’m dying to see this deal done. Decades of being a Bucs fan have me in cold sweats waiting to read the Bucs offered Baker Mayfield a two day old egg salad sandwich and a can of warm soda because they’re hot to ink Jameis Winston to a Russel Wilson type contract then are saving the rest of their cap space to lure Myron Lewis out of retirement so Mayfield and David signed with Carolina in the name of revenge. The Bucs have a proper front office trinity in Licht, Spytek and Greenberg. Spytek should be a GM somewhere else by now. We are so blessed relative to the lost decade and the decades prior to that that made the lost decade look and feel relatively good and feel easy. The Bucs front office was always as bad as these guys are good. So many years of preposterously dumb off season moves has my mind playing tricks on me like Bushwick Bill. Get it done puh-leeeeeees.

    Thank you! 🙂

  10. ModHairKen Says:

Come on. It’s been done. No way Winfield gets the tag if it wasn’t done.

  11. Keimosabe Says:

In all honesty, with ME13 signed I would of expected an announcement of Mayfield right after. Seeing how this hasn’t happened must mean the 2 sides aren’t even close.

  12. RGA Says:

Another site indicates that Baker’s agent is coming in at 44 mil a year, whoa!!

  13. Keimosabe Says:

Bakers most likely waiting to test the open market

  14. Keimosabe Says:

If that’s true RGA, then I say let him walk, he’s not a 44 mil a year qb,

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Keimosabe…I’m with you. Just so long as you’re not Rod Munch under a different screen name.

    44 million is ludicrous.

  16. HeavyE Says:

Let him go, we don’t need him for 30-35mil a year, he will go back to his old ways, let’s just move on and get Penix and Henry!!!

  17. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Question I have is that after we bring back Mayfield and David, is there any one that we could still go out and sign ? How much money would we even have left ? What about Chase McLaughlin ?

  18. Weebs10 Says:

Happy to do my part, Joe!!

  19. Towered Says:

Rusty, it seems that Bucs fans should settle for keeping their own players as of they won it all last year. No need for aggressive moves or true value assessments.

  20. TomBucsFan Says:

Maybe they do let him test free agency and he settles.

“I agree Towered. I’d take Russ + Henry over Baker all day. As long as we draft Penix.”

Penix is probably the dumbest pick a Gm could make unless as a plan B contingency or backup. Significant history of injuries and A qb that doesn’t move well.

    What could go wrong?

As for Russ. The chief dimwad pushing him didn’t even realize his contract situation until I pointed it out. Russ is around a one year plan before you have to start paying him what you likely can’t pay because Denver no longer will be.

  22. Hopein1hand… Says:

Wow RGA- 44?!? I wish we could post links. I should have known Mayfield would be negotiating like he runs on 3rd downs. I’m all about him signing at just about any number but he and his agent are trying to truck a LB for a 1st with that figure. I admire the spirit though and I imagine he and his agent are like, “Daniel Jones will not be playing for more money than me after I won you a playoff game for mediocre third down back money when you were in cap hell.” He’s got about as much leverage as a man can have in this negotiation. It will be north $40 mil methinks though. Everything in life keeps getting preposterously expensive. At least the Bucs will not be in the Giants shoes paying Eli Manning’s stunt double like he is actually going to win them division, or will they tech the same conclusion NYG fans have next year? I’ll be entertained regardless of outcomes and I appreciate that. Win or lose, on my team or not- I appreciate a player that’s full or piss and vinegar like Mayfield is. Brady changed Trask’s mechanics and if he catches Mayfield’s grit he could have be a marvelous long term construction/hell of a starter in a number of years. It’s a little ridiculous how much my mind is spinning over this deal but QB is sort of the most important position. Hopefully I will post and refresh and see the headline with whatever numbers they land on.

    …….
That does not surprise me at all and probably has incentives and escalators that will get him up to around $50M.

THAT IS THE MARKET BUC FANS.

  30. CTBucs Says:

Just read that BM wants 45m annually. That’s insane. I’d rather sign TWO edge rushers, a new safety and a new G/C with that. We will be better with that team and trask than overpaying for one playee

  32. OlBoy Says:

That is not the market, BakerAgentIntern. No matter how loud you and the others proclaim it.
If that report is true that our guys are coming in at 25 then we are truly in good hands. They’ll land at about 32 or he can walk. In Licht I must trust

  33. OlBoy Says:

    32 with incentives.* Hehehehe

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Relax people. Jason has this. It’s high stakes holdem at this point and Jason actually has a ton of chips no one – no one – else has. He knows and Baker camp knows who the other QB options are, and who the other teams are that would pay Baker.

    Jason has this.

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

40 mil? Thats what Ive said all along, although I was hoping It was a lil high.
We dont have to pay it.
    But someone else will.

Then Mayfield will curb stomp us everytime we see him. Pray its not the falcons!
Then we’ll all be sitting on the Couch in December. Looking at early Mock drafts.
Watching Baker leading the Falcons in the payoffs.

Hating life to a degree that is unimaginable today.

And there wont be a single hater or Traskovite on this site.

  36. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Trask will be the starting QB and Capt Tim will be a Falcons fan.

    Seems like a win win.

  37. Boss Says:

why do we even need bake considering we have the popcorn eating, end zone dancing, jump ball dropping, cost us another SB, greatest all-time WR, Mike friigin Evans.

He can make any qb look good. or so I have heard..

  38. Capt.Tim Says:

Watching Mayfield lead another team in the Playoffs.
Will be like watching Doug Williams Lead The Redskins to the SuperBowl.
Or Watching Steve Young collecting SuperBowl rings.
Or Trent Dilfer leading the Ravens thru the Playoffs, and winning the ring.

If you havent experienced that yet- its not fun.

  39. SteveK Says:

Give me Cousins for $25m or Russ for cheap before giving Baker $40m. No thanks. Allow another team to overpay for top 12-15 QB play.

  40. BUCman Says:

According to reports Mayfield’s agent started at 44m and the Bucs started at 25m. Expect them to meet in the middle around 35m. The question is how many years is the deal for.

  41. SCBucsFan Says:

Baker isn’t worth 40 let alone 44. He hasn’t proven he can be consistent. Let’s not pretend he didn’t have multiple games last year that he played terrible in. The overall stats for the year were relatively good, but it was up and down from week to week. I think in between 30 to 35 for 3 years with incentives with like 50 or 60 guaranteed sounds reasonable for both sides. If he plays like a above average QB then the incentives will pay him like one. I trust Licht to make the right decision. There are a couple other options out there like Cousins and Brisset. You can’t handicap the team by overpaying Baker because he’s not good enough to make up for the lack of talent if you do. The goal is to get the core back and ADD to the team so we can be BETTER this year, not over pay and bring the same team back cuz you have no money left.

Pewter Reort is saying that Bakers camp came in at 44M per year and the Bucs at 25M per year.

The problem isn’t all these rampant speculations. They are what they are. Its that a great deal of dimwits repeat it a few times and then drop the “Pewter is reporting” and then it becomes fact what baker is asking 40 or 44 million.

All so they can spew hate when they don’t even know if its true.

That said – IF I am the bucs – not paying 40s but then again if I am Baker’s agent and we are in the low 20s with the bucs I am leaning heavily on him to go to free agency.

  44. Beeej Says:

The ’40s would be okay if he got there via incentives, because that would mean he was killing it

Wait. Am I mixing up names or wasn’t boss the guy that said he was gone for five years?

  46. Dom Says:

Boss still in shambles about Mike Evans signing to a fair deal lol. The guy played with back up level QB’s like Mike Glennon, Josh McCown, Jameis Winston, and Ryan Fitzpatrick the first six years of his career and produced WR1 numbers for 6 straight years in spite of it. And now hes been doing it for 10 straight years. I thought you said we wouldn’t be seeing you in a few years

  47. Hopein1hand… Says:

What if the Bucs sign Kirk Cousins and he’d lead the Bucs to a better record than Minnesota of two years ago squeaking out “YOU LIKE THAT!?!” in the tunnel after the game all those years ago. That was horrible. Humiliation beyond measure. Dude has more dogs in his basement than young Mike Vick by the way but that is only because he and his wife run a stray dog rescue of of their basement. He was slinging it like a boss on the Morning Cup of Joe. Maybe Cousins would take a “I am such an innately virtuous NERD” discount to leave cap room for the kicker? I will never forgive him for taking over the third quarter on the Bucs his rookie year in Ray Jay. Blowing up like that in our house and then popping his mouth off like he did scarred my fan hood but pirates/buccaneers rock scars well. His favorite band is ‘Creed’ because they rock with their Christian message by the way. I’m serious. Please Licht sign the QB whose you know what is swinging to his knees. Not Teddy Bridgewater, but he is for real. That seems like it would be a curse. I remember when fans were clamoring to draft Teddy to Tampa way back when. He would be a decent value option at this point. Just sign Mayfield. Licht doesn’t have much leverage beyond the draft and a bad trade-up. It’ll be north of $40 mil.

  48. Capt.Tim Says:

And “Mostly Peaceful Trask fan” will have changed his post name, and will be on Joebuc frequently. Calling his boy Kyle a worthless POS, and screaming for Jason Licht to be fired, and rode outa town on a rail.

Ive been here for a decade, pal. Never a name change. You know why?
Because I dont ever support brain dead Ideas!
Like letting a 28 year old elite QB leave the team.
Or starting a Noodle armed bust at QB .

  54. Boss Says:

    @ dave dom & tony

you ladies just do NOT know football and sure as hell do not know people.

I manage careers daily…and bakes best year was pathetic considering the circumstances and talent. he is a one read qb who focuses on mike and the play is over by the time he looks past him, which leafs him to fighting LB’s…he can not read defenses.the should have let mike walk and sent lovie packing last year.

we should have let mike and bake walk and traded CD for an edge guy. drafted WR and OL and would have 50 mill laying around for free agents.

this is a running team spending all their coin on WR’s and QB

IN WHAT WORLD DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?

It is the market, the crazy ass market. Like Real Estate on the coast in FL, maybe now you guys can get it.

  57. Boss Says:

    hey 87, call me bro

  58. Marine Buc Says:

Wow – I just read a report that stated the Bucs and Mayfield are @ $20M per season apart and the Bucs are letting Baker test free agency because (just like Mike Evans) the initial price tags are delusional…

I am very happy that the Bucs are letting Baker test free agency instead of walking into the same QB trap that the Giants, Broncos, Browns, Cardinals, Saints, Seahawks, Titans and Raiders all have been caught in.

  59. OlBoy Says:

The only thing on this team worth 40mil is the playing of AWJ. It literally won us more than one game. It was incredible. That’s where the money should go in today’s NFL. The player that can make the plays to bring the wins to the team and gives the fans something to be be inspired and amazed by. Stop over paying one position just because it’s the way it’s been done. Baker isn’t even in this conversation without AWJ.

  60. Dave Pear Says:

Boss – congratulations! You will be named the next GM of the Bucs!

You and your great pretend internet facade are the perfect resume’ as the Glazers look to replace the boneheaded Licht for all these moves that you criticize, which have resulted in 4 consecutive playoff years, 3 consecutive division titles and the ability to acquire FA players at the right time and money to keep it going after successfully going all in on a second Lombardi.

Can’t wait for your regime to begin.

With Evans you could literally any QB behind center and he would make them look good. You don’t to invest 30 mil plus on Cousin or Mayfield because Bowles will not take this team to the superbowl anyway. Save the money and build the team for a good head coach when he finally gets canned.

  64. Dave Pear Says:

Jay – relaxed, Rachaad ain’t that good and he flaps his tap a lot. He got some bad advice from somewhere that he should be aggressive. Haha. No worries.

  65. OlBoy Says:

Bills are releasing Poyer. I’d like to see Licht take a run at him and slot him next to Winfield

  70. Mickman Says:

I am sure Baker deal is done. If I had to guess why it is not announced it is because they need to make room by signing Wirfs to a long term deal. Thus less negative impact to the cap

  71. OlBoy Says:

If, in the example above, Jerry jones pays dak that kind of money, then that’s his dumbass sinking that team even further. That’s on him, but as a percentage of the total amount of the yrly salary cap who anywhere would find that to be even considered. The only thing dak has proved during this most recently overpriced contract of his is he can’t win it. He doesn’t have it. And if JJ wants to continue to spend that level of money then he’s getting revenue for that player from somewhere other than the Superbowl cause he ain’t gonna sniff it with that qb. Much like baker.

    I agree.

Maybe I would franchise tag Dak or just let him test free agency as well.

He is not worth a Pat Mahomes type contract… No way.

  76. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Some of the projections around $40MM sound very high, but if you look at the current market demand and what various tiers of QBs are earning, it’s not a reach to see Baker comping out around $35MM/per. If not the Bucs, someone will be willing to go with a four year deal of around $140 to $150MM. I don’t see the Bucs letting him go, and I don’t see Baker getting too greedy. The last thing that he wants is to start over again with a different club! The kid’s been through too much of that already.

So happy the deal is done with ME! The continuity counts big. Don’t forget that Bake and Mike have only played one season together. This season they’ll mesh even better.

  77. Tony Marks Says:

LOL I am a prophet . I said they would drop the “pewter reports” soon and pretend like its a verified fact baker is demanding 44 million and BOOOM they obey my prophecy!

what shall the Theos tell me next?

  78. Rod Munch Says:

Is Baker really better than Wilson + $30m? Is Baker really better than Fields + $35m? Is Baker better, straight up, than either, even if you take salary out of the equation?

Baker was 18th in QBR, 20th in scoring, and out of his final 8 regular season games, he only had 2 good games, he collapsed in the playoffs with the game on the line, he collapsed at the end of the regular season when the Bucs HAD to win one of their two final games.

With that said, I’d have no issues bringing Baker back FOR ONE YEAR to see if he can improve – but people talking about him like he’s a franchise QB are literally insane.

Anyways, we’ll see what Licht does. Everyone is always scared of change so they’ll over pay to keep him, but the question is, how much are they willing to overpay – and more importantly, for how many years.

Personally I don’t really see any scenario where Baker is a better deal than Wilson and three additional starters – or even Trask and four additional starters – certainly not when he will almost certainly fall off at least a little from his career year – when he was already a bottom half starter.

With that said, to be fair, Baker certainly overachieved last year when he bet on himself, and with the Bucs or somewhere else made himself a lot of money. That’s great. But man is the downside steep if you’re locked into a multi-year deal.

We’ll see how it plays out – but hopefully the Bucs are actually looking at the other options and not just stuck on the idea that since Baker was here, you must have him back. At the very least, I hope they’re using these other scenarios for negotiating power.

  79. Bucnjim Says:

Wednesday’s are boring just waiting for Friday. Probably sitting back laughing at the media. This deal has been hashed out a long time ago and only requires pen to paper!

  80. Cobraboy Says:

I read elsewhere that the Bucs and Mayfield are $ 20 million/year apart.

  81. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

He isn’t going anywhere. His agents are trying for max value (surprise, they get a %) and Baker has been crapped on enough by the Browns that he’s gonna grab with both hands. That said, he has s HC that loves him, some stud WR that took a little less because he sort of likes what they can cook up. He sure as F is not going to just chase a $. Doubts? Check his answer last year on the Rams website regarding FA. Bucs give a fair contract and he’s locked in for 4 years, with a team out year 3 (thats how the NFL works)

  82. Stanglassman Says:

The report a I heard yesterday at 4:30 was ‘Not close’ . Text Scott from PR received it while on air from someone in the discussions.
Hopefully the status improved to not done from not close. I can image that being the same situation just being described differently.

I’m pretty sure I’M better than Justin Fields

  85. sdm5821 Says:

Baker’s contract will be much like Evan’s, reported as one thing, but in actuality a totally different breakdown. Just speculation on my part, but for sake of discussion, expect a three year deal at $120 million with $65-70 million guaranteed. Reality is, that it will be around the a 2 year deal with a club option for the third and the cap hit will be about $32-33 million for those two years.

  86. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Carson Wentz, Daniel Jones and DeShaun Watson are the three worst things that ever happened if you’re trying to negotiate a QB deal. Thats why i expect guaranteed money up front (about 1/4 of the whole deal), incentive heavy and a 3rd year out. Also explain Baker to be good with that, he’s not shy about betting on himself
Lock it in, the Bucs gonna have them a Mayfield next year, and it’s gonna be entertaining as F

  87. Bucnjim Says:

I’m pretty sure it’s closer to a four year with a 5th year option $150 million half guaranteed.

One thing is certain. You cannot trust anything that comes out of a sports reporters mouth.
Its sad. It was a profession that produced alot of tremendous reports.
But just like your evening News. The truth is no longer the objective.

The reports are probably being written and released by the Bucs.
If you are worried about fan reaction to paying a guy 35 mil,
The have the Press say the guy wants 45 mil.
Then, when fans see the 35, they are happy it wasnt 45.

Just another way to tell you how to think.

  94. Tony Marks Says:

LEARN TO READ – BAKER AND BUCS ARE NOT 20 Million APART

Realizing how daft people in these comments are I looked up the actual report.

    From Pewter

“the Bucs and Mayfield’s camp were very far apart TO BEGIN WITH.

    Then

“But Mayfield’s camp opened negotiations with an offer rumored to be at $44 million per year. The thinking there is that Mayfield is a better quarterback than New York Giants starter Daniel Jones, who makes an average of $40 million per season.

Tampa Bay is rumored to have either countered – or started – with an offer of $25 million per year,”

THESE WERE OPENING OFFERS PEOPLE – STANDARD PRACTICE IN NEGOTIATIONS NOT DEMANDS

    AS the ARTICLE SAYS –

“Bucs fans shouldn’t be alarmed by those initial offers from Baker Mayfield’s agent and the team. That’s typical in negotiations.”

One starts high – the other starts low and then they work together from there
    final quote

“The Bucs and Mayfield’s agent have made some progress from their initial talks in Indianapolis, but a deal does not appear to be imminent”

In other words THOSE ARE NOT THE NUMBERS NOW BUT WHEN THE NEGOTIATIONS STARTED AWHILE BACK

Put down your pitch forks and hatorades. Nothing to see here but normal negotiations. Same thing probably happened with Evans when reports were saying he wanted 35 million – just opening offers not demands to work down from going forward.

    ———-

Why would Bakers camp even want to bring up the name Daniel Jones at all? Can’t they find a non-bust QB to compare him to? That’s considered probably the worst deal in the NFL, and that’s what the Baker clan uses as their negotiating tactic?

“Hey, here’s the worst contract in football – we want you to beat it!”

NO demands. if they gave way a bit on both sides then its probably going to be in the low 30s as many suspected. and that might be adjusted under incentives as well

Trask, if I had to GUESS, is a Brad Johnson type QB.

Brad was physically tougher that Kyle is, but my GUESS is that Kyle gets up to speed quicker in his career than Brad did.

Kyle is heady, more mobile than most think and would protect the ball.

Can the Bucs win a SB with a game manager Trask at QB (if that’s his ceiling)?

    Answer: They won with Brad.

Brad won with an epic, elite defense, but Kyle would presumably have a better offense than Brad had under Gruden

  116. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

“Great and then whats the plan after the year?”

We will have the same choices to make.

If Wilson plays well maybe he stays for another year or two.

If not – then we find the next QB off of the NFL scrap heap (just like Baker and Russ)

OR – we draft a QB or trade for one.

I would prefer all of these options over making the same mistake the Giants and Broncos made.

  117. Tony Marks Says:

I believe Baker’s agent initial offer was ridiculously high and maybe the Buc’s offer was low.

They will probably still end up meeting in the middle.

Like I have been saying for a few months now – 3 years $90M with $45M guaranteed with a 4th year option at @$40M (non-guaranteed).

Buc’s can bail out after year 2 and Baker can re-fill his bank account after his family robbed him…

  119. Tony Marks Says:

    Marine Buc Says:

Doesn’t matter how he plays. You still have to pay him because Denver w ill be clearing him out. I get it. Just like Rod you don’t know his situation.

  120. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

I am well aware of Wilson’s contract situation. You aren’t the only guy with YouTube bud.

If Wilson plays well after year one (for $1.2M) then we re-sign him to a reasonable deal based on his level of play.

Just like we are now doing with Baker… It is the exact same situation. Find a QB in the trash can and sign him to the cheapest deal possible.

    I like shopping at Ross.

EXACTLY – same thing when you buy a house. The owner starts with a max price and you start at your lowest. But you guys get a snippet of a fraction of a normal negotiation process without even details as whether incentives etc are in there and you are off to the races with your silliness.

  130. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

yes I have seen the wingbat claims of how many players you can add – thus using up the cap space again for those players. You clean missed the point. You will have others with no good QB leaving because of wanting to win – not your cap.

I’m surprised of how many Bucs fans didn’t actually watch the games and/or think they know more than all the T.B. players and coaches know regarding Baker. 🤣

  143. Shane Callahan Says:

Everyone on here trashing Baker should already be coughing up crow feathers. I guess they just like eating crow.

  144. RGA Says:

Shane, Bakers QBR is 18th in the league, he has a career record of 42-47. The Ira Kauffman podcast had a debate if he should be benched at mid season. He had an outstanding performance against the Packers, and was down right terrible in a must win game against the lowly Panthers who still managed to hand the game to the Bucs with mistakes and a great performance by our exceptional kicker, Mayfield is very inconsistent. I’m sure Jason Licht is weighing all options before handing the keys of the future to this inconsistent, average QB.

  145. Shane Callahan Says:

    Eating crow! 🤣

  146. Shane Callahan Says:

Other QBR ratings have him in the top 10. Just depends what you want to site to prove your point. I tend to believe the coaches and players.

  147. Shane Callahan Says:

That’s not even taking into account his center and guards would be backups on any other team. It’s a team game, and he did amazing. Period.

  148. Shane Callahan Says:

Unlike many of you all, I’ve seen what he can do with an above average o-line something he’s not had in his NFL career. Hopefully, you all will get to see that in the upcoming years. Go Bucs!

  149. RGA Says:

His track record is what it is. I’m all for Bakers return but not at the dollars or anywhere close to what his agent is throwing out there. This is a team game, in my opinion his contract demands are extravagant, Brady played for less.
The more they pay Mayfield, the less they have to upgrade the roster around him. I’m sure that’s something we can all agree on, he’s not a franchise, elite QB.

  150. ManzielMadness Says:

Ian Beckles reported Mike would test free agency, they announced his deal later that day. Maybe we should wait for an actual contract to be released before condemning Baker.

  151. RGA Says:

I for one is not condemning Mayfield, he’s a good solid middle of the road, average QB. Licht should not and better not invest this Bucs franchise in a lucrative long term contract for an average quarterback. I’m a Bucs fan since 1976, I am not an armchair GM, however I do know that the quarterback position is the most important position on an nfl roster. Finding a true franchise QB is difficult. That means you don’t straddle the franchise for average. Have to keep your eyes open and hope to hit on a stellar QB.

  152. adam from ny Says:

i think the bucs and russell chilson are closer than baker and hainsey, before baker yells hike…

  153. adam from ny Says:

wilson and the bucs are closer than baker and jensen

  154. RGA Says:

Trading for Fields and his rookie contract would be of interest. He’s up and coming and this franchise has never really had a running QB. Steve Young could run, unfortunately he had nothing of talent surrounding him.

  155. Wes Hall Says:

Yee Tampa fans have little faith. Once again all of you wanna be GMs need to slow your roll. Let the ones that actually get paid to make these decisions do just that. If Baker wants to price himself out of going with the Bucs that’s his perogative. Stupid but I guess we’ll see. He’s worth 35 million X 3 45 million guaranteed
. He’ll be back after he realizes that he’s just a middle of the pack QB. But will Tampa move on from his arrogant ass?
