Highlights From Today’s Mike Evans News Conference

Mike Evans had a news conference at One Buc Palace this afternoon to celebrate his new two-year contract signed on Monday.
Joe’s got highlights!
First, Joe has to say Evans was talking about how he wants to be “a Buc for life” and the Bucs have been promoting that he will be a “Buc For Life” to season pass holders today with emails and fancy graphics. Meanwhile, Evans signed a two-year contract and he openly stated today he wants to play another 5 or 6 years. The “Buc For Life” thing is no done deal.
*Evans expressed thanks to all, including Team Glazer, general manger Jason Licht many others.
*Yes, Evans did think about playing for other teams in 2024. He called that “a cool dream, but Tampa’s my home.”
*Jason Licht on Evans: “He’s the epitome of what you want in a draft pick. … Been chasing that [Evans] standard every year with my staff.”
*Evans on Baker Mayfield’s hopefully re-signing with the Bucs. “They’re going to handle their process. I trust Jason and the front office no matter what happens.”
*Evans talked to new offensive coordinator Liam Coen extensively and likes the plan to get him the ball. He said he loved what he heard from Coen about the new offense.
*Thank you, Mrs. Evans. Mike Evans said she kept his head right when the Bucs didn’t give him the contract he wanted last spring and summer. “Early on it was a struggle, like probably before the season started.” Mrs. Evans, advised her husband to just play ball and enjoy the teammates and city he loves. He said Mrs. Evans was big a part of the decision to stay in Tampa.
*After playing six seasons for the Bucs in The Lost Decade, “these last four years have been a dream and it’s been what every players wishes they could have throughout their whole career,” Evans said.
*On Jason Licht: “That’s my guy,” Evans said, adding about how close he is with Licht and his wife and kids.
*On the 2024 Bucs, assuming the key free agents return. “I think we’re in a really good place. … Super-close to getting to the NFC Championship,” Evans said.

Mike said that only because Baker was offended that Mike signed before Baker. The narrative being pushed had been that Baker is elite and so Mike would wait for Elite Baker to sign to make sure Mike plays with an elite quarterback. Only, Mike signed before Elite Baker, putting the kibosh on the notion that Elite Baker is elite. Mike is covering his ass now in case Baker comes back to the Bucs. Not that Mike really cares. So, the Bucs got their servants in the media to push the narrative that Baker is elite, that Mike wants to play for an elite quarterback, and therefore Mike will hold off on signing until Elite Baker signs. Marine Buc – I think Wilson will get more like $10m, but that is still quite the savings considering Wilson is the better QB.
But, it’s all for not, they’ll sign Baker, probably to $30m I’d guess, hopefully under it. The only real thing I’d hate is if it’s something that cripples the team next year if he reverts back to being a bust, which I obviously think will be the most likely outcome.
However, if they sign him, I’ll get on the Team Positive bandwagon and hope for the best.
