Franchise Tag Goes To Antoine Winfield, Jr.

March 5th, 2024

All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield, Jr. will not reach free agency.

The Bucs used their one and only franchise tag option this afternoon on Winfield, whose four-year rookie contract was about to end.

The 2020 second-round draft pick will earn about $17 million this season on the tag. However, Winfield and the Bucs will continue negotiating a long-term deal and potentially will tear up the tag if a contract is reached, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Great news! And Joe suspects this means a Baker Mayfield deal with Tampa Bay is imminent. There’s no way the Bucs would be stupid enough to franchise tag a safety and let their starting quarterback walk away for no good reason.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Get that long term deal done already. You don’t let future HOF players walk away, and the longer you wait, the more expensive he’s going to be.

  5. Jack Clark Says:

Awesome, Antoine Winfield, Jr. deserves every penny

  6. Marine Buc Says:

Now get a new deal done for Tristan Wirfs next please.

  7. Ko Kiefer Says:

Buccaneric – how are you labeling the most no-brainer transaction here as “fishy”, and what does it have to do with the Baker negotiations?

… and let their starting quarterback walk away for no good reason.

You act like he had a special season. Come back down to Earth, man. He was middle of the pack in a season where several quality QBs missed significant time. He has a checkered history, and the team is already digging out of a bad cap situation. But the best reason to let him walk? A COMPENSATORY PICK in the 3rd or 4th round. His meager production is completely replaceable with other middling QBs. There is absolutely no reason to keep him.

  13. BucBen61 Says:

Realistic…I hope nobody listens to your useless drivel

  14. J Says:

Couldn’t let him walk, and I agree with getting Wirfs wrapped up as well.

@BucBen61, yet here you are replying. Thanks

  16. Richard Dickson Says:

If you’re not re-signing Baker, throwing that contract at Evans makes no sense. Unless we’re somehow making a play for Cousins, but why pay him more when you’re probably going to be right back here next year?

  17. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Good. He gets paid a pretty decent chunk, and no bidding war. Old boy is a vital part of the D, glad he’s back

  18. BucBen61 Says:

It’s amazing…I listen to and read a ton of NFL news and nowhere but here to I get this total bs about Baker being a middling QB…he was the #10 scoring QB in fantasy this past season….all the QBs got points for yards and TDS and penalized for turnovers…he was #10…just quit with the nonsense he wasn’t any good

  19. D-Rome Says:

Close to a million a game.

I agree. The team was paying that much for Darelle Revis 10 years ago and Winfield Jr. is a more impactful player for the Bucs than Revis was.

That was no lie. it was a mistake. Omitted the word Averaged by mistake. Wilson averaged 37 yards a game less.

I went back and made that clear but just take it and run with it.

I must have posted it during your nap time.

The best Bucs players are (no order) Winfield, Wirfs, and Evans. Two of them are now locked up for next year. Working on the third. Everybody else on the roster is replaceable. I’m not saying they should all be replaced, just that there are priorities. Very happy that Winfield is staying put. Hopefully it turns into a multi-year deal soon.

    ———-

If I’m the Bucs, I’m signing the future HOF’er to like a 6yr $120 million dollar deal.

The only concern you’d have about Winfield is the concussions, so perhaps there’s a way to structure the deal to offer you some protection, but otherwise, he’s the type of player who should be an ALL-PRO level player even when he’s 30.

Also, the longer the deal, the more you can move around money to make it work – plus what is expensive now will be average starter money by the end of the deal. Sort of how the Bucs signed Evans to a 5yr $82m deal which was really expensive at the time, but by the end of the deal, Evans was a huge bargain. With your young talent that you know is elite, you should lock them up for as long as you can.

  31. Hopein1hand… Says:

Evans, David and Winfield. How blessed are we? The farm animal was a nice treat but Baker’s impending signing has me beside myself. It’s never been like this in March. Cancy… Yaya… OMFG being a Bucs fan has never been so sweet. Plus Trask LOL

Truthfully, with all the talk out of Baker’s camp I’d like to see the Bucs bring in Russ for a visit. They won’t sign him but it would be one hell of a shot across the bow.

Antoine definitely seemed to like it here and wanted to sign, anyway; but maybe Jason’s not sure about his (Antoine’s) agent’s tactics, etc., and used the tag just to be on the safe side; can’t take any chances with the “top four. It looks good with Lavonte, too.

  40. DBS Says:

I heard the same thing. Baker will be announced tomorrow.

  41. Pickgrin Says:

  46. Ed McSherry Says:

I agree with the above point about Mahomes stats v. Baker’s stats: if Mahomes is considered Elite status, so should Baker.

Mahomes is running around the backfield on half of the plays, and those are “blown plays.” Baker accomplished a great year with a decimated interior O-line, took the hits and still made the plays.

Why in the hell should Baker get a 26 million dollar raise, for only a couple
    of months work.

Why? Because that is what QBs cost, unfortunately. We will pay him a bunch more money because if we don’t, someone else will. That’s basic market economics, for better or worse. If we can get him for 30 million a year, that would be a win, given the current skyrocketing QB salaries. If he has another year like this past one, and we had to sign him next year, you can bet the price would be north of 40 million per season.

When he was needed to lead the team, he fell apart like a cheap suit.

Incorrect. He led us down the stretch with that winning streak, and played really well. He lit it up in the playoffs. I can’t fault him too much for the late game pick against Detroit. DET was the better team and deserved to win.

  72. Tony Marks Says:

“CleanHouse and SteveK have been posting on this site for years. Just as I have…and Joe watches out for screen name changes.”

Yawn….rubbish. this site has no login functionality for commenters. There is even a legit David that uses the same name David so its entirely possible to use someone else name. Baker haters have been proven to be using multiple names on this site – caught and then essentially admitted. Its not up for debate.

  73. David Says:

I can’t believe there are morons out there who don’t think they should re-sign Baker at this point. They clearly don’t know a damn thing about football. All the best organizations have one thing in common… Stability. The GM, the head coach, the QB.
Baker has had a different OC or HC every year he’s been in the league. The fact that he played so well and consistently improved throughout the year when dealing with that is remarkable. Keeping him here with the same players, and hopefully an offensive coordinator for a few years, should prove that he is a top 10 quarterback, year in and year out.

I’ll take a hard pass on Russell Wilson

If they don’t sign him, I just assume trade up and get the QB you want in the draft. But after signing Evans, that is not happening. They are going to be signing Baker this week so if you don’t like it… Go root for Carolina.

  74. Tony Says:

Let Devin go to NO with Jameis on his horse. Then when Jameis decides to steal more crablegs Devin can be waiting right outside Publix or any other store on his horse & he can be the getaway for Jameis.

  75. Buc1987 Says:

Tony Marks…you’re way too paranoid man…smoke another one and put on your tinfoil hat.

  76. Tony Says:

If Baker can’t come back THEN THAT MEANS WE’RE BRINGING TOM BACK. There’s a reason he took this year off anyway.

HE’D BEEN TRAINING WITH DERRICK BROOKS RAY LEWIS BRIAN URLACHER MICHAEL VICK & LAMAR JACKSON & HE’S BEEN LEARNING HOW TO BECOME A RUNNING QB & PART TIME LB, TOO!

He’s adding another weapon to his game. He’s gonna be a two way player, too! He’s gonna fill in at LB at times to replace Devin, too!

So it might ACTUALLY WORK OUT because we could bring in TURBO BOOSTER TOM then.

  77. Buc1987 Says:

  82. Critmark Says:

    @ BucaneroJim

You are correct, comparing Bakers career to Mahomes is a fools errand. That said, I thought I would explore something being a stats geek.

I took the top 50 QBs in yards from ESPN and added 8 additional that are relevant if only based on their past (Rodgers) or prospects of being a starter next year (Brisett). Next I broke the group into three sets.

Set 1 – SB winners, of which there are just 5 currently playing.
Mahomes – reasonable to assume he can win more
Flacco – unlikely he wins another
Rodgers – unlikely he wins another (feel free to disagree)
Wilson – unlikely he wins another
Stafford – might win another but his body is breaking down

Set 2 – QBs than have won a playoff game. Getting there and going 1 and out is only marginally better that not getting there at all. There are only 17 current QB’s (other than the 5 above) that ever won a playoff game.

Of those 17, 7 have one just 1. Some because they are relatively new to the league, some just couldn’t get it done. Those are: Cousins, Watson, Jones, Keenum, Lawrence, Stroud & Love. That leaves just 10 that have won more than 1 playoff game, but not a SB: Goff (5), Allen (5), Burrow (5), Purdy (4), Garoppolo (3) and 5 with 2 playoff wins (listed by winning % in the playoffs): Mayfield (50%), Tannehill & Hurts (40%), Jackson (33%) & Prescott (29%).

Set 3 – QBs that have never won a playoff game. There are 36 here, and only 9 of them have ever made the postseason. Some notable names in this group: Carr, Wentz, Dalton, Murray, Winston, Trubisky, Herbert, Fields.

The final thing I did was calculate the cost per playoff win based on total salary through 2023 using number from OverTheCap.com. Lots of interesting stuff here too but this post is long enough. Happy to share if anyone is interested.

As one of the most vocal supporters of Baker here I have to say this is waaaay over the top. I never rule out the future with no working crystal ball but right now – Baker is nowhere near elite as Mahomes is.

This is where stats alone without context , rings and playoff heroics misses the mark.

  90. Capt.Tim Says:

    Tony Marks,
Love your post, but gotta disagree.
Mayfield is absolutely Elite. He took the worst franchise in the NFL to the playoffs, for the first time in Decades. Just 3 years after having the worst record in Football, the Wretched Browns were in the playoffs. No wonder the America Sports Writers voted Mayfield Rookie of the year. Trophy looked good next to his Heisman.
Then Mayfield made his one big mistake. He tore the Labrum in his Shoulder. But instead of going on I.R., he tried to play. He went 6-8, and the Genuises in Cleveland, thought they’d be better with the deeply perverted Deshaun Watson.
Mayfield took the team with the worst record in Football, and the longest Playoff drought- to the playoffs. Left them with a 30-30 record, after they were 2-14 the year they drafted him number 1.
No one can help Carolina. Good luck Dave Canales.
Mayfield won 3 of 4 with the struggling Rams, after only being there 2 days before his first start.
Then the Bucs. Predicted to finish last in the division.4-12 was the most frequent prediction I saw.
We were the NFC CHAMPIONS. Despite having a bottom 3 rushing game and TE production. First team to win a playoff game with bottom 3 rushing and TE production. That means Baker Mayfield was our sole source of offense, yet we beat the defending NFC Champions.
Mayfield was voted to the ProBowl.won MVP and the accuracy Competition.
Finished the season with over 4,000 yards. Top ten in QB completion rate. Top ten completion rate over 20 yards. All time NFL record for arm strength- threw a pass 78 yards in the air.
Mayfield accomplish all of this, with no running game, bottom of the league TE production. 29th ranked Pass Defense, the 34th ranked center, and 79th ranked guard(Stennie).

Baby,if that aint Elite- I dont know what is

How do you know? Have you taken a survey. Your words are not true because I booed him during the first Eagles game and I heard other people booing him, too. I think there are less than 100 Baker fans and you all came to the Bucs when he did. I have NEVER met a Baker Boi in person.

Love your post, but gotta disagree.
Mayfield is absolutely Elite. He took the worst franchise in the NFL to the playoffs, for the first time in Decades
    ————————-
He quarterbacked that “worst franchise” for two years before they went to the playoffs and that was because of the running game and defense. He averaged only 7.3 YPC that year

You actually believe that people would go out of there way and create a different screen name so that it looks like more peeps don’t like Baker? Nonsense! ”

Come on, buddy…you’ve been around about as long as I have…you must have noticed some people here using multiple usernames before.

I noticed some posting the same exact paragraph in three different names just a few days ago.

I can’t speak to their reasons, but it happens a lot here. Guys like you and me stick with the same names for a decade because we don’t mind being held accountable for the things we say…but others lack the absence lity to admit when they are wrong.

Heck, I doubt Tony has only had the one name.

You’re right! His aliases are Michigan Joe and Captain Tim!! LOL!!

  98. Critmark Says:

    @ realistic-optimistic – Happy to share.

Not surprising, Purdy has the lowest cost/playoff ($/PW) win given he has been paid just $1.6MM so far in his career.

#2 is also not surprising, Mahomes, given the number of playoff games he has won. His $/PW is $11.3MM. Add the SB wins and this is the bargain of all time.

#3 Hurts ($14.4MM) & #5 Love ($19.8MM) both on the low side because they are basically on rookie deals. Yes Hurts has signed an extension, but it has not really kicked in yet.

#4 is Burrow ($15.2MM) because he does have a nice # of wins and just one year on this extension contract.

Then there are four more between $22-26MM. Allen ($22.6MM) based on multiple wins, Stroud ($24.1MM) on his rookie deal, Flacco ($25.2MM) highest earner in the top 10 to date but 7 playoff wins, and then Baker ($26.2MM).

Next is where it gets interesting. In the $30MM range are 4 QB: Lawrence ($31.1MM) for his 1 win, Rodgers ($31.2MM) for his 11 wins, Goff ($32.2MM) with 5 wins and Wilson ($38.0MM) with 7 wins.

Only 2 in the $50MM range: Keenum ($48.2MM) for his 1 win and Garoppolo ($49.6MM) with 3 wins.

The last 7 were all paid more per playoff win than Baker has made in his career., and these numbers get BIG, quick. Jackson ($56.2MM) with his 2 MVPs and just 2 wins, Jones ($72.1MM) for 1 win, Prescott ($80.7MM) with 2 wins, Tannehill ($97.5MM) with 2 wins, Stafford ($109.3MM) for just 3 wins but that includes a SB, Watson ($142.8MM) BIG number for just 1 win and the most expensive, Cousins ($231.5MM) for his 1 playoff win.

So do you really think Cousins is better than Baker? Dak wins a lot of regular season games, just can’t get it done in the playoffs, and he has an almost $60MM cap hit in 2024. Watson is really expensive, even if he wins a game next year given his $64MM cap hit in 2024, and 2025 and 2026.

I found this interesting, and I hope others do as well.

Thanks for the very interesting and comprehensive stats.

As stated before… I have always liked Baker and support him as a Buc, but nitpicking stats to call him “elite” and comparing him to Brady and Mahomes is Orwell’s 1984 doublespeak.

If Baker resigns as a Buc and takes us to the Super Bowl a couple times, then start talking “elite”. Winning the pitiful NFC South last year does not make a QB great.

    Mayfield is absolutely Elite.

I hear you cap but elite wasn’t really my focus as much as comparison to Mahomes.

I got to give some added respect to a back to back SB winner and the career he has had. So Baker elite I can iive with (everybody swears it has one meaning but it does not)

Same level as Mahomes – nuh-huh. Win at least one ring before he can be even considered.

  103. Since76 Says:

Lol. You guys that say Mayfield is elite……..do elite QBs ever see free agency. I’m waiting. When was the last elite free agent in his prime let afloat in free agency. Baker supporters please tell me. If it has happened it wasn’t often. But I can’t remember one of hand. Is Baker the first.

  104. Dave Pear Says:

  109. ATLBUC Says:

What would it mean if Baker did not sign a contract tomorrow?

  110. Capt.Tim Says:

    AtlBuc,
    Two things
Ill raise hell with my source or making me look bad.
It means we have to wait a few more days for the Mayfield signing.

But the Bucs will sign Baker Mayfield. The fans here LOVE him. Everytime he runs into a defender, or talks smack to someone on the other team, he just futher endears himself to the fans.
No way the Bucs can let this Kid get away. The fan base would never forgive them.
Everybody loves an Underdog. Everybody loves a comeback story.
    The Bucs will sign Mayfield

  111. Mike S Says:

There’s no more money for Baker – not unless he wants to sign for 15 mil per.

    Someone will give him 25+

Baker is as good as gone.

  112. RGA Says:

If the Bucs do indeed sign Mayfield, it better be a cap friendly contract with a way out in case he resorts back to his play in the first three quarters of the season and his previous experience as a pro with multiple franchises.

  113. RGA Says:

If Mayfield signed with the Falcons, I’d be happy as a Buc defensive coordinator to game plan against him twice a year. There is not one defensive coordinator in the NFL that will lose sleep game planning against Mayfield.

  114. Critmark Says:

    @ Dave Pear

Thank you sir. As I said, I am a big stats geek. I do run a bunch of detailed (aka weird) stats. Sometimes they tell me things, sometime not so much.

What prompted this latest query was all the talk about how much Baker should be paid. For the record, I have no idea. My guess is, what the two sides agree on.

Everyone will agree that you get paid to win. But my thought was, not all wins are equal. Personally, I would prefer my team got wins in the postseason and not just the regular season. That has always been my criticism of Dak. Most people would say Dak is better than Baker, but a winning % of .286 in the postseason is a far cry from Baker’s .500. I know not everyone agrees.

All the Baker Bois said Evans was waiting for Mayfield to sign because Evans viewed Mayfield as “elite” and Evans didn’t want to sign and be stuck with Trask. But then Evans signed before Mayfield, when only Trask was under contract. Based on Baker Boi logic, that means it is Trask who Evans views as “elite”. Where am I wrong?

    ————

That is a very correct and true point – and I appreciate the fact the lead Baker Boi response to you was, ‘ur stoopid’. Pretty much sums up their movement.

“Same level as Mahomes – nuh-huh. Win at least one ring before he can be even considered.”

Thanks for letting me know that Mahomes has won Super Bowls, but I’ve heard, already.

It isn’t about Super Bowl wins (“elite” isn’t dependent on Super Bowl wins; it’s a “straw man” argument in your case), it’s about each individual quarterback’s accomplishments, and whether they reached “elite status” this year.

I believe Baker did that. And, pointed out that his stats were even as good or better than Mahomes this year.
