Chase Edmonds Riffs On Liam Coen

March 15th, 2024

Liam Coen breakdown.

New Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen is sort of a mystery to Joe and most fans. We know he began Baker Mayfield’s turnaround and he helped groom an NFL quarterback at Kentucky, Will Levis.

(Joe surely hopes Coen didn’t teach Levis to eat banana rinds and put mayo in his coffee — gross!)

So when returning running back Chase Edmonds did a zoom call for the local pen and mic club yesterday, Edmonds was asked what folks can expect from an offense crafted by Coen.

It seems the Bucs offense will use many different formations and motions to try to confuse defenses.

“I’m optimistic,” Edmonds said of playing for Coen. “I met Liam [in] the building when he first [was] hired. We obviously played each other when I was in the NFC West when I was on the Arizona Cardinals.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about him and just how he operates – highly detail-oriented, giving multiple different looks to a defense to where again, you kind of just playing that ‘You’re chasing a ghost’ game where you’re giving out three to four different looks that are very similar for a defense or an opponent.

“Once you combine the motion factor with it, I think it really is difficult for defenses to defend. It’s also awesome that it was a mid-zone, outside-zone scheme so it was relatively similar to what we were running last year.

“I think that’s very important for the young O-Line we have coming in this year, again. I think for the run game from Tampa Bay, I think we’ll hit our stride a lot earlier than we did last year as an offensive unit.”

You know, Joe thinks Edmonds makes a helluva point. Offensive lines shine when they have consistency.

All the pretty formations and savvy motions are fine. When the ball is snapped, you still have to block and catch and advance the ball.

The Bucs in recent years have had excellent health on the offensive line.

The key here is an offense can be as cute as it wants. But when the play clock is clicking down, you still have to execute.

Hopefully he will recognize that the player on offense with the best open field moves is Devin Thompkins and create ways to get him the ball on the move!

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face….. Mike Tyson.

The O Line needs to show some nastiness.

  3. ATLBUC Says:

Sounds like JL is going to recruit some o linemen

  4. ATLBUC Says:

I mean “draft” some o linemen

Very insightful, football players have to play football, haha. Sorry Joe, I had to point that out. It’s just what I thought after reading.

  6. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m happy Joe mentioned the lack of injuries on the OL. The Bucs were fortunate? last year with the lack of serious injuries. As fans, we need to give a shout out to our training staff, as did our players in the NFLPA poll.

Draft pass rush and OL !

“An NFL quarterback” the highest compliment for Will Levis

Im thinking we add at least 2 in the first 5 picks.
Don’t rule out an OT on the right side either because Licht said he knows Goedeke can play guard. Having him next to Wirfs would help. Please teach the WRs and TEs how to have showmanship also. It really does take all 11 to completely confuse a defense. We need more pump and go routes, double screens and all together trick plays that don’t look like a monkey screwing a football because they hardly ever practice it. Thats why Im hoping Cephus Johnson takes a step as a past QB. I also think Camarda could score on a well executed fake punt. Let’s fill the holes and play some football.

Mike Tyson is going to ring Jake Paul’s bell.

  10. Jokers Paradigm Says:

Thanks for jinxing the O-Line Joe by saying they stayed healthy. (Ha Ha)

  11. BUC CHEEKS Says:

For a second there, I thought we signed the Jets, Breece Hall…. I did a double check and it was Bryce Hall, got me!!!

  12. BUC CHEEKS Says:

What’s the story on Bryce Hall?

BREAKING: Rick Stroud is reporting Bryce Hall has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Buccaneers

  14. Bucs Guy Says:

Build the trenches. Get a FA C/G if possible.

Draft BPA Edge in 1st rd
TE Sanders in 2nd – this your #1 TE
G/C Mahogony from BC or Van Pran from UGA in 3rd
Follow with a power RB Allen Wisc or Estime ND in the 3rd
Rutgers CB Melton in the 4th
Finish up with a LB and WR in the 6th and 7th.

“It all comes down to blocking and Tackling” Vince Lombardi
    Always true.

Last year. Wirfs was in a new position, Goedeke was in a new(with the Bucs) position. Hainsey is in the wrong position. Mauch was a rookie. Stennie was in the wrong profession.

Our tackles and Mauch should have some stability and confidence at their spots.
We get the Guard and Center we need- this Oline will start to be special.
But more than any unit, the Oline has to play together. They need time together.
We have to bring in a starting Guard. Hopefully a young vet.
Then we draft a Talented Center.
And we have to get some young talent developing, so we have guys ready to step in, that are familiar with the scheme and the starters.

It all comes down to Offensive and defensive lines.
We never really addressed the nightmare of losing Marpet, Cappa, and Jensen all so close together.
We havent properly addressed losing JPP and Suh.
We have taken care of the “skill Positions”

Now lets address what wins games. The Lines

  16. ChiBuc Says:

“The Bucs in recent years have had excellent health on the offensive line.”

Gulp, someone better get this memo to Jensen

  17. Proudbucsfan Says:

You guys don’t watch film, Stinnie is better at RG we need to move him over if he is resigned, draft a center or try Mauch there. Also put Hainsey at LG, even though he did improve towards the end of the season he can’t handle the center position. R White would have had 4yds a carry and over 1000yds if he would have seen the open holes he missed the first half of the season.

  18. Beeej Says:

I wonder if we see Hainsey is a better guard than a center?

  19. D Cone Says:

Anyone that’s thinks Coen will deviate far from the Canales offense is mistaken.

Canales with Bucs in 2023 passed 56.4 of the time.

Coen @ KY (SEC) 2021 Passed 42.4% Ran 57.6% 32.3 points a game tied with
    Central Michigan (MAC) 2933 Y Passing 2594 Y Rushing.
    Coen @ KY (SEC) 2023 Passed 52.5% Ran 47.5% 29.2 points a game just behind Toledo (MAC) 2751 Y Passing 1660 Y Rushing.

KY was 10-3 in 2021 ran well, played from ahead and pounded the ball. Helped playing Mountaineer Middle School.

KY was 7-6 in 2023 so they were playing from behind at times and had to pass more.

Coen is going to Run the ball. Bowles wouldn’t have hired him otherwise.

Run the Ball and Keep on Running the Ball Until you can Run the Ball. All the Motion is simply window dressing.

Wish the guy luck running Bowles Style game.

I don’t know bout that tyson might bite Paul’s ear off also why wud any pro give a has-been like tyson the time of day he shud have been permanently disqualified from boxing life time ban when u bite off someone’s ear is something only a dirtbag wud do Tyson was the worst his true colors shined thru after buster Douglas fight all his previous fights were no name monkeys just like him a friggin monkey

  21. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Dcone as usual u b wrong don’t compare Coen to Canales with up middle 1st&2nd 3rd throw or run for his life don’t sack the guy before his 1st practice session

  22. MelvinJunior Says:

Well, he’s sure used to “Bowels Style,” D Cone… Stoops & Bowels are identical mirrors of one another. I mean, EXACT. Same style, & neither know how or when to use timeouts, and are HORRIFIC at the end of ballgames and clock management… Also, they’re both just HORRIBLE at managing the ‘Middle-Eight’ of ballgames (last 4mins of the first half, & first 4mins of the third quarter).

  23. ^^mtn^^ Says:

For all those who keep saying Hainsey can just move over to G, don’t forget his weaknesses move with him.

Yes, he could be strong competition for LG, but don’t expect too much.

His best role would be iOL C/G back up.

That would allow the Bucs to dress 7 OL on game day:

    5 starters, Hainsey & swing T
    or
8 with another back up G
