Carlton Davis Has Been Traded

March 11th, 2024

Gone.

UPDATED 6:29 p.m.: The top Bucs corner the past five seasons who regularly locked up opponent’s No. 1 receiver is no more.

The Bucs have traded Carlton Davis to the Lions, per Jenna Laine of ESPN.

Tampa Bay recouped a third round pick in this year’s draft but also sent away sixth-round picks this year and next. (Remember, the Bucs have/had two sixth-round picks this year.) The move also clears about $6 million of the Bucs’ salary cap this season, a move that will make the accounting geeks happy.

This is a tough one for Joe to swallow. While fans hated Davis for his lack of picks, he often smothered opposing top-shelf wide receivers. Davis also missed 16 starts to injury over the past three seasons.

Teams generally do not run off their best corners. So Joe has to believe Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has something up his sleeve. And boy, Licht better find an edge rusher or Bucs fans will have all sorts of firewood to holler about this fall.

The Zyon McCollum era arrived sooner than Joe expected.

Good luck C. Davis and thanks for your contribution to the SB run.

Time to turn the page for a new era. Next man up McCollum you have big shoes to fill.

  2. shak Says:

need to know for what ASAP!!

  3. Bucs Guy Says:

And what did the Bucs get for him?

  4. Jimbob Says:

    Terrible decision

  5. Leopold Stotch Says:

    Oh snap!

  6. Richard Dickson Says:

Look up his injury history over the last few seasons. Can’t cover their top guy when you’re on the sideline so often.

  7. Boss Says:

    good luck CD

    1st bake casualty…

  8. Truth be Told Says:

Good. Hurt a lot . Way overpaid. Better in Man than the Zone coverage we mostly play. Pass Rush. Pass Rush.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

    Wow… Why?

He’s literally your #1 corner, one of the best in the league when he’s allowed to play man-to-man. I guess this means Lovie, I mean Bowles, is going to go back to his horrific soft zone garbage.

  10. dbbuc711 Says:

    Dang that was fast

  11. Rod Munch Says:

God there’s a lot of truly retarded people in the comments that literally have no idea what they’re watching.

  12. Bucs97 Says:

    Lions receive: Davis, 2024 6th & and 2025 6th

    Bucs: Lions 2024 3rd rounder

  13. Jeffs grandpa Says:

CD24 and both 6ths we get the lions 3rd rd pick

  14. ghost Says:

he was always “hurt” after he got roasted

  15. Bucs 95 Says:

Just got the lions 3rd round pick for him could they not get more ? Maybe even a player

  16. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

    gage cut as well.

  17. Weston Says:

    When does Whitehead sign?

  18. BPBucsfan Says:

As of right now, I don’t like it at all.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, this is terrible news. Dean can’t stay healthy, and Zyon is a much better 3rd corner than a top 2 corner.

This kills your depth, only frees up $5m of cap.

This makes no sense at all unless, as stated above, Bowles is all in on his switch to zone, that can’t stop anyone or anything. If you’re playing man-to-man, Davis is one of the best in the league.

    Wow.

  20. Tony marks Says:

Woah. thought they wee just hearing offers not pulling triggers

  21. Carl Says:

Told ya. Before resigning mayfield the bucs had only 24 million. After they were 6 million over the cap.

  22. Bucsfan339 Says:

We have him up for a 3rd round pick and gave 2 6 rounders one from 25 one 26. I don’t know why we gave 2 6 rounders.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Sending our star cornerback packing, is a clear sign that a beast of a pass rusher is about to join the squad. Hopefully

  24. BucsBeast Says:

    Carlton 24 6th 25 6th for a 24 3rd

  25. geno711 Says:

Hate to lose Carlton Davis. This to me just feels like we are hoping that McCollum and Izien take a step forward.

We needed salary cap space, and this creates a little for this year and I think quite a bit more next year.

Besides receivers in the draft, the DB market is supposed to be pretty good as well.

  26. adam from ny Says:

i saw this coming, but i thought they’d try to get SMB back in the building to offset the loss and help with salary cap issues…
now we are left with a hole at #1 blanket-man…

my thoughts were dean and smb….with zion (who’s not ready yet and delaney as back ups….and izzy

    a 3rd rounder isn’t bad…

cd3 was a more than decent corner…hopefully whitehead is returning with some zing

  27. D Cone Says:

Addition by Subtraction. 13 Rookies from 2023 are no longer Rookies. Time to go back to the well.

  28. adam from ny Says:

izzy physique wise, seems more like a safety than a corner…just saying…

he’s not exactly long and lean…and armsy…like dean, zion and cd3

he had a nice rookie season tho

  29. All_da_way Says:

McCollum was effectively the starter last year because Davis and Dean can not stay healthy.

Bucs need to upgrade edge rusher and boundary CB now IMVHO.

    =========

Did ya tell everyone, did you explain how things were gonna be?

Mayfield is a $10m cap hit this year, not $30m, so exactly how does that fit your capologist reporting?

  31. geno711 Says:

I think I read a 3rd rounder has about 8 times the likelihood of success as a 6th rounder.

  32. Allbuccedup Says:

Maybe kool aid will be picked at 26!

  33. Boss Says:

So many clueless on here that did not and still do not seem the ramifications of sundays signing.

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Did we snag the 73rd pick they acquired from Minnesota or the 92nd pick?

  35. Adamant70 Says:

We gonna get Kool-Aid in the draft. Watch.

    ——–

I think it just means Bowles is going to double down on running that worthless zone where you just have guys stand around – and if that is the case, you don’t need expensive corners, you can just put anyone out there.

Of course the downside of that is it doesn’t stop anyone. But Bowles knows best, and that SB defense was apparently overrated in his mind, what we need is a totally new passive scheme.

  37. adam from ny Says:

gotta get a nice workable piece with that 3rd rounder detroit sent our way…very important to pull a solid piece out of the draft – or we got fleeced lol

  38. adam from ny Says:

yeah now both original gravediggers are gone……cd3 & smb

  39. BUCman Says:

Which 3rd round pick did they get. Lions have two 3rd round picks. Which 6th round pick this year did we give up. We go have two 6th round picks.

  40. Tbbucs3 Says:

Rod, your acting like Carlton Davis wasnt terrible last year? He was declining and way overpaid, this is the right decision.

  41. Bucs Guy Says:

Just heard Bucs get 3rd and giving up a 6th this year and 6th next year.

  42. mtbucsfan Says:

Hopefully trying to trade up for Bowers.

  43. BucVoyager Says:

According to posters here, he will be easy to replace either in free-agency or the draft.

  44. Jerseybuc Says:

3rd round pick is solid considering his injury and money issues. Jason better get a DB though we all know Dean won’t stay healthy

  45. Marine Buc Says:

This moves proves that our head coach and GM believe Z. McCollum is ready to step up and become a starting CB.

It also means the Bucs will probably draft a CB in rounds 1-3 in April.

  46. Simeon4HOF Says:

#24 oversmoked his marijuana on weekends before games. Have firsthand knowledge, know such to be true. And it showed on the field

  47. agnosticbuc Says:

    weird return for sure

  48. Tony marks Says:

Just calm down people. There are no games being played for the next 6 months. Its a process of connected moves not moves in isolation.

  49. Bucs Guy Says:

DE/OLB, G and CB. Picks 1-3 for Bucs plus another 3rd rd pick for days 1 and 2 in the draft. Do the Bucs have money to sign any FAs?

  50. CTBucs Says:

I’ll take a 3rd and get rid of an injury risk and clear $15m off the cap. Everyone claims CDIII is so good, he has 9INTs in his career….only one season with more than 2INTs. He can be replaced. Thanks for the run Carlton, we’ll see you in the playoffs

  51. Mike S Says:

    First domino to fall.

You wanted Baker – this is the consequence.

  52. Confido75 Says:

Just hoping this trade was to clear cap space to get an upgrade somewhere else. Only getting a 3rd round pick and giving up 2 6th round picks doesn’t seem like a great deal considering the talent. JL must have a plan here.

  53. Dewey Selmon Says:

He gonna get roasted in the locker room for the block put on his last year. The 6 million freed up will pay for #54 this year.

  54. Lord Cornelius Says:

Right now this hurts us but we way overpaid on CB last year for the production.

Two top 12 paid CB’s in the NFL on a team with a bottom 3 pass yards defense and bottom 7 in YPA, while you had Antoine Winfield playing S and a reliable 3rd CB in Zyon.

That just doesn’t add up if you’re just looking at things like a business investment. Our pass rush wasn’t THAT bad.

Bowles may be looking to play more zone too or at least have corners that can play zone. It seems like the Davis/Dean combo only works when we have an elite pass rush – and guess what – many CB’s will look great if you have an elite pass rush…

Interesting move for sure. Let’s see how the chips fall

  55. Hearty Dikerson Says:

I’ll just be frustrated if we now turn around and use our 1st round pick on a CB that Bowles will play in soft-zone 90% of the time, and will thus be just as ineffective as every other CB we have playing 15 yards off the line of scrimmage.

  56. Go bucs Smokey Says:

Hopefully we restructure some contracts and we have enough cap space to get some high value FA’s in here and also resign LVD!!!!

  57. Tbbucs3 Says:

Mike S auditioning to be the new David

  58. K_bassuka Says:

They had to do it, you can’t spend the money they did on Maybefield without valid excuses on why he isn’t winning or playing well… 🤷🏽‍♂️

  59. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Lord Cornelius

I hope all is well Bredren

Your thoughts on the following prospect

    Khyree Jackson CB Height: 6’4” | Weight: 194 | 40Y: 4.5

  60. Tony marks Says:

    Mike S Says:

You wanted Baker – this is the consequence.

Stop complainging and wait by the phone.

Bucs figured out all they have to do is get you to to envision the Ball as Baker’s head and you will bat away any incoming passes

Nex move by Licht – Signing the hypnotist.

  61. Dom Says:

On the plus side it’s a strong draft for CB’s. Might have to double dip on the position in the draft. A 3rd round pick is great compensation too for a CB on the last year of their deal that always seems to get hurt

  62. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Great news. The bucs leading used lawn chair is gone! Beautiful, don’t let that door hit you, where the good lord split you on your way out the door! Good riddance.

  63. Miller5252 Says:

I don’t mind that they traded him…. 3rd pick is all we get and they get Davis and 2 6s?? Why not just trade him for a 12 pack. Detroit has to be loving life! Hope they bring back whithead or D end that’s worth something with $6 mill saved

  64. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Munch

    I hear you, man.
I’m just hoping there’s a pass rusher at the end of this.

  65. Defense Rules Says:

Joe’s been running articles for awhile about the likelihood of either Davis or Dean being traded. Neither had great availability, but Carlton’s was a tad worse. I’m not at all surprised by this decision, since Davis was in the last year of his contract. Biggest question now is ‘Did the Lions pick up his entire contract or do the Bucs have to eat part of it?’

Well, there is a bigger question come to think of it: ‘Who replaces him?’ Right now we’ve got Dean, McCollum, Delaney plus Isaac, Moseley & Hayes on our roster, plus Izien played mostly Nickel last year. We’ve got some decent depth pieces there, but surely JL & TB are gonna bring in another experienced starter-capable corner to pair with Dean. Starting outside corners’ availability hasn’t been all that great over these past 5 years.

  66. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Bowles is a supposed defensive guru with the secondary being his “specialty.” Let’s hope he proves his worth and we don’t have to spend top 12 CB money or more early draft picks to aide his 29th-ranked pass D.

  67. Pewter941 Says:

    This one hurt

  68. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The news coming out of 1 buc place just keeps getting better by the minute. To rid of #1 leading lawnchair, and to cut an expensive non productive wr that hardly played is just the way it should be. I am beginning to think these buc brass knows what they do🤓

  69. Bucben61 Says:

Haters still want to talk Mayfield… Wow…talk about beating a dead horse…

  70. Noclu4u Says:

I told y’all this was about to happen on the last post . About 5 hours ago .

  71. Mike Johnson Says:

Davis was a good Buc. I tip my cup to him. Best of luck dude. Ok. Now find us a good DB in the draft.

  72. Noclu4u Says:

    Bucs are after a 17.5 sack guy . I’ve told y’all this for a week now .

  73. Pewter Power Says:

At worst they’ll be what they were last year in the secondary only now they aren’t overpaying to end up with an average comeback tandem

  74. Bucben61 Says:

So far I think the bucs are doing what they need to do to get ready for next season….I have no reason to second guess JL….man seems to be very competent

  75. HeavyE Says:

Now do the same with Dean!!! GO BUCS!!!

  76. SenileSenior Says:

Loved it when we picked him initially. Thanks you Carlton for what you brought!

    Go Bucs!

  77. Winny Testaverde Says:

Not a huge fan of this. We saw what Detroit did in the playoff game when Zion had to replace Dean.

  78. Dave Pear Says:

Good for Davis, going to a team with an awesome Head Coach. Obviously we had too much tied up in press man CBs when the Head Coich Defenseless Coordinator loves him some zone bust coverages. Third most passing yards given up last year and one of the worst of all time. Defensive genius!!!

It will be interesting to see how poorly Bowles decides to use his new crop of DBs.

  79. Stan says Says:

I normally don’t agree with Rod M. I totally agreed with ever comment he post on the thread. Well said my friend well said.

  80. MadMax Says:

Oh yeah, we got another 3rd…. Genius Jason back at it!

  81. MadMax Says:

Come on down Cooper DeJean….thats the replacement who can also return balls….loving it!

  82. Bojim Says:

Third round. Better than I thought. Kudos

  83. Go bucs Smokey Says:

I say we should sign Chase Young to a one year prove it deal that would help our pass rush if he can show out like his rookie year

Rod, your acting like Carlton Davis wasnt terrible last year? He was declining and way overpaid, this is the right decision.

    ——–

He was terrible when he was in zone, yes. When they switched back to man-to-man, he looked much more like himself.

This means everyone should look forward to seeing a lot more soft garbage zone! YAY!

And as for salary, you’re freeing up $6m, not $15m.

Anywho, we’ll see – maybe I’m wrong, maybe Davis will be a complete bust in Detroit and we can all laugh as the Bucs draft a corner in the 6th round who comes in and starts from day 1 and is an ALL-Pro, that will be awesome if it happens.

  85. DJB Says:

    McCollum sucks at CB!

  86. HeavyE Says:

How is JL a genius? When these are the mistakes that he made from the beginning? Letting Mike Edwards get away Justin Watson, signing Dean and Davis to massive contracts and the signing of Gage…….

  87. David Says:

    For a 6 round pick to get a 3rd round back and save 6 million… I’d say it’s a good deal.

I would have rather traded Dean, because, like Joe said, when Davis is healthy, he can lock people down. But I fully understand that one of them had to be traded. You can’t pay 2 CBs 13-14 mil per year when neither of them ever complete a full year.

Zion and Dean are FAST. Izien showed a lot of promise also.

I would think a 2nd or 3rd rounder will be used for a DB now.

  88. Warrenfb12 Says:

Gross dude wtf? A 3rd rounder? Why trade ur best corner?

  89. firethecannons Says:

Good–would of thought we could of kept our 6th round picks. He is injury prone and is getting old.

  90. BucsFan81 Says:

Who cares dude spent more time injured. Dean needs to go also. We need new CBs and to sign Whitehead to pair with Winfield.

I would love to see whitehead back he hits players like a ton of bricks!!

  92. EEK Says:

he was great but he missed a lot of time with injuries

    tough one indeed to accept

  93. Colonel Angus Says:

If we turn this into a proven pass rusher, it was a good deal.

  94. SB~LV Says:

Recouped ? Did they give one up in a earlier trade?

  95. Olboy Says:

Oh noze, the injury firm of Davis and Dean has been split. Pfft
    We will be fine.

  96. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Know what would be hilarious????

If we brought in Lattimore from the Saints to help out 😂😂😂

  97. cmurda Says:

Wow. Lotta hate, some love for CD24. At the end of the day, this is nothing personal. This is strictly a cap move and it just makes sense. There will be no lack of suitors for Carlton.

  98. SB~LV Says:

    Which Lions 3rd round pick?
    They have two
    #72 and #92

  99. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

Always hurt and a bad season… It was worth it for a 3rd round pick and clearing cap space.

Thank you for your service CD!

  100. YaYa813 Says:

Good trade for the Bucs and we got a 3rd rd pick. Either we trade up or we just reload the roster with talent.

  101. BUCman Says:

Joe, which 6th round pick did we give up this year. We have two. Pick #200 and #220

  102. ScottyMack Says:

Not upset about this move at all. Shedding a WAAAAAAY overpaid CB is a smart move. Has nothing to do with Mayfield, you idiots! Has everything to do with his value compared to his bloated pay.

  103. brooks Says:

Hurt to much. Like zyon move him up draft young.

  104. Usfbucs Says:

This should have been expected. He had one of the biggest cap hits and the injuries

  105. Dave Pear Says:

Bwoles will find a way to further regress the pass defense. He could get the 25 year old versions of Revis, Prime Time, Ronde, Current Antoine and Lott and give up the yards like free cotton candy at the carnival.

  106. Mr. Editor Says:

It looks like the Bucs received the #92 pick overall (3rd Round) and traded away the #204 pick overall (6th Round).

  107. Chrisonthecape Says:

If you feel like you will miss him, go back and watch the Houston game. We need 3/4 new starters in the secondary. Only Winfield should return.

  108. DS Says:

Hard to have a expensive secondary without a pass rush

  109. Obvious Says:

This move doesn’t sit right with me. It Never feels right to give up the Best you’ve got in any position but this feels very risky.

Of course I nor anyone else here knows what’s up Jason’s sleeve so I’m going to have faith in his decision and the replacement he has in mind.

But I gotta say it again. This isn’t sitting right with me..

  110. BucEmUp Says:

Hopefully David gets signed very soon. They should look at leanard johnson

  111. George R Says:

This was not hard to understand. CD was in the last year of his contract. Next year he is a free agent and we get squat. CD has a base salary of 14 million in 2024. CD is not worth 14 million.

  112. BigMacAttack Says:

I like this trade for the most part.

  113. FrontFour Says:

Sorry to see Davis go. Injuries set him back, but clearly our best CB. And guys like that don’t grow on trees. When Zyon went in vs Detroit in the playoffs he got torched. Good luck, Carlton.

  114. Rick Says:

writing was on the wall here. we weren’t going to use up 1/4 of the cap on secondary. especially when we had the worst pass D. will always remember him either being hurt or getting roasted by the chiefs or texans.

  115. Lakeland Steve Says:

Joe, you said it yourself earlier. With Winfield tagged the Bucs may have had the highest paid defensive backfield in the league. However they were close to last in the league in pass defense. That was just too much money tied up in a unit that besides Winfield underperformed. The writing has been on the wall. When is the last season that Carlton Davis played the entire season. The answer is never! The guy missed quite a few games every season. Can anyone remember when Davis had an interception? I can’t either. I know a lot of people have a lot of heartache over this decision but someone had to go. So far he and Russell Gage got the boot. Both of them together gives the Bucs another $12 mil. in cap space. So, everyone calm down, it’s going to be ok.

  116. Mississippi Buc Says:

Now trade Jamel. They both are inconsistent and Jamel is always hurt

  117. yucboy Says:

They trading up for Cooper DeJean

  118. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The time was right for this trade.

Whether the secondary gets better or not, this was a good move.

I wonder if they plan to move Winfield to corner?

  119. Trask To The Future Says:

    Locked down top receivers?

LOL. He gave up tons of yards and contributied to our secondary constantly getting torched.

  120. sunbunny Says:

    @boss @carl @mike s @k_bassuka

this had nothing at all to do with baker’s contract. he is only costing $10m against the cap for 2024. that’s not much more than his cap hit for last year.

seems like licht is cleaning house and getting rid of those who haven’t provided value for the amount they were getting paid.

  121. heyjude Says:

We don’t know what goes on at one buc place, but we saw some inconsistencies with Davis. I wish him the best and maybe the Lions are a better fit. Possibly Jamel is next too. Agree with sunbunny and others, maybe they are cleaning house and building. It has nothing to do with Baker.

  122. Ed Says:

Davis was good when on the field, especially against bigger, physical receivers.

I never thought he was very good covering speedy guys. I believe it was Davis that Tyrek Hill burned for nearly 200 yards in one half. Hardly a pro-bowl performance. He is well suited for Detroit as they play a physical defense which
    is Davis’ strength.

Dean was a better tackler than Davis and that doesn’t say much. Dean is better at finding the ball on the deeper downfield throws.

I don’t think it hurts the Bucs that much and having so much money tied up in DB’s and still have a defense that gives up tons of yards says that anyone except Winfield is replaceable in the secondary.

Prefer to watch McCollum hunger for a second contract and work hard to turn into a good corner. He is very athletic and with more playing time maybe he’ll develop into a good player.

  123. Robert Says:

Often injured , 14 mil a year savings and you get 2 draft picks for him. Best GM in football.

  124. Jmarkbuc Says:

Carlton had become the second coming of Vernon Hargreaves.

Only injured more often. This move was overdue.
