Bucs Have A New Left Guard?

March 15th, 2024

New Bucs guard Ben Bredeson.

Is this guy the new Bucs starting left guard?

Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, today the Bucs signed Giants free agent guard Ben Bredeson. A former Ravens fourth-round pick, Bredeson started 16 games last year for the woeful Big Blue.

Per BSPN’s Giants beat reporter Jordan Raanan, Bredeson is a “quality” guard when he’s not bounced around the line. Per BSPN’s block win-rate, (suspected data, Joe believes) Bredeson is not a strong pass blocker.

When it comes to offensive line play, there are no quality, reliable stats outside of total sacks allowed. So Joe prefers the word of a guy who watched Bredeson each game and spoke with coaches about him.

The note from Raanan that Bredeson is “quality” when he’s just at one guard spot is encouraging. Barring injuries, Bredeson won’t be bounced around the Bucs’ offensive line.

(Joe knows this question is coming: Yes, “this Joe” thinks the Bucs have fully forgotten about an edge rusher. Or they believe the most important position on defense is trivial.)

  1. elite bucs Says:

Edge Rusher would be nice, but this is good news nonetheless

  2. Marine Buc Says:

    Cool.

The Bucs appear to only have 11 open roster slots left on their 53 man roster.

One will be the QB3 and one will be a long snapper.

So 9 open slots left and we have 7 draft picks to fill most of those slots.

I hope the Bucs sign one more free agent IOL and hopefully an edge rusher and that would pretty much fill out our roster.

    Go Bucs!

  3. ATLBUC Says:

Joe have you considered that the Bucs might be rolling with JTS and YAYA? You know how Bowles is when he likes a player.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

lol Joe about that edge again.

  5. BIGHANKYMOE Says:

HERE WE GO AGAIN CRY BABY JOE

  6. MelvinJunior Says:

I think they’ve fallen in love with Chop Robinson or JPJ, and will take the best available… Problem being, they’ll prob have to trade-up in order to get either one of them. I just hope they don’t get caught ‘flat-footed’ and miss-out on BOTH. How bout a draft class with some wheelin’ & dealin’ for Chop Robinson & Barton (& TJ Tampa)!? Now, THAT Would Be A HOMERUN HAUL!!!!

  7. adam from ny Says:

    feiler, stinnie replacement

  8. OR Buc Says:

I trust Licht. He knows edge is a priority. He also doesn’t want to overspend in initial wave of FA. I’m confident he will address the position meaningfully.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Marine Buc…my cousin was the long snapper for the first SB win.

It was awesome wearing his ring….and being such a huge fan.

When he signed with the team he called me up.

I told him don’t let me see any snaps go over Gramattica’s head and if he played well he has a good shot at getting a ring.

  10. TomBucsFan Says:

    JPJ or LATU at 26

  11. Darkwing Buc Says:

Yannick Nagakoue is out there after a down year and recovering from injury. Could be a cheap signing on a player still in his 20s who could bounce back. Could be a Shaq Barret type of signing

  12. Cover deuce Says:

Oh my god they traded for JPP on like March 22nd would you quit being so melodramatic.

  13. MelvinJunior Says:

I’m afraid that neither one of those guys will still be around at #26, Tom… They’ll need to make a move up to get “THEIR Guy!”

  14. Nose Tackle Says:

    Nick Leverett replacement

  15. NJbucs23 Says:

Pass rushers coming in the draft

  16. Proudbucsfan Says:

He’s a backup, he’s not any better then Stinnie

  17. pewter941 Says:

Ranking 35th among guards. There are 32 teams in the NFL.

  18. Usfbucs Says:

I know not everyone likes PFF but their grading system has this guy as no better than what we have, below average.

  19. Kgh4life Says:

The giants had one of the worst olines in the league last year. He’s nothing but depth.

  20. Marine Buc Says:

    @ 87

Hey man that’s pretty cool… That Buc team was historic. I hope you scored a few autographs from those Buc legends on that team.

Best defense in NFL history IMO.

  21. NJBucs Says:

What was the word last year on Feiler? Was it similar?

  22. Marine Buc Says:

    @ USF

True – Bredeson is just a depth signing but he can play both guard and center and is probably better than both Stinnie and Leverett…

He may even be better than Hainsey – who was the worst center in the NFL in 2023.

  23. rrsrq Says:

This is interesting, do we really know who will be developing our o-line now with Goodwin gone?

  24. Simeon4HOF Says:

Hopefully they still dtaft a Center or Guard in Rd 2

  25. SlyPirate Says:

All you need to know is:
    LICHT NEVER MISSES ON OL

His staff has OL down. If they like him, he’s good.

  26. Joe Says:

Ranking 35th among guards. There are 32 teams in the NFL.

And 64 guard positions which means — if you believe this ranking — Bredeson is middle of the pack.

  27. Popcorn Mike Says:

What I like about the last 2 free agents is, they’re both 26 years old. If the Bucs get quality play out of both this season then the Bucs should have 4 to 5 good years if they decide to resign them

  28. MelvinJunior Says:

Well, the Vikings just snagged the ‘23rd PICK’ from the Texans for this year’s and next year’s 2nd’s (plus a 7th, I think)… Sounds like a real good deal for them. I think there’s going to be soooo much movement and wheelin’ & dealin’ in this years draft, especially at the top.

  29. Popcorn Mike Says:

As for this edge rusher. Joe keeps mentioning edge rusher, I am sure Licht know what he’s doing at that position Even without a big time edge rusher last year, the Bucs defense was still decent. If not for a couple of offensive lapses the Bucs could’ve reached 11 wins.

  30. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Back up plan potential starter depending on who else they can pick up.

More than likely solid backup/ competition who can play C as well.

    Nice signing

    ^^mtn^^
    Since ’76

  31. Simeon4HOF Says:

One reason Bucs haven’t pursued just any high dollar FA Edge is bcuz of everyone they resigned. They took care of business and it’s not a bad thing that they are just a draft away. Licht will surely get a Pass Rusher to compliment Diaby

  32. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bucs got this guy for 1 year, $3.5 mil, I think it was. They can still trade for an edge, although I wonder if the Eagles would trade Reddick or Sweat to the Bucs after getting smoke in the playoffs by the guys in pewter and red.

  33. BPBucsfan Says:

Just picked up OT Justin Skule as well.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

This guy won the LG job last year out if training camp and because OL injuries they moved him to center then to RG and then to back to center.
So he graded out that well playing 3 different positions on a offense that was decimated Bucs injuries. I image he would grade out much better plugged into LG and starting it all season on a stable good OL. I trust Licht’s opinion on offensive lineman over jbf commit page GMs.

  35. BPBucsfan Says:

    Still waiting on edge rusher.

  36. Buccaneric Says:

Licht can evaluate o lineman. What else is there to say? Go Bucs!

  37. unbelievable Says:

Need 2 edge rushers, a CB, and an ILB, plus another OL and RB

  38. Pewter Power Says:

“this Joe” thinks the Bucs have fully forgotten about an edge rusher.

Licht took a big swing and miss on big name free agents at edge. Outside of his first year as GM which was a free agent disaster, Licht does not generally spend on high priced free agents or gives up high draft picks, expecting them to do it now isn’t very logical.

Personally Joe yes winning games are important but I’d rather us draft a household name than sign one just as I would prefer we draft a home run at quarterback. Baker is cool but draft somebody worth talking about.

  39. BucVoyager Says:

This is good, the more we can get in free agency, the less we will reach in the draft.

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

Very good signing. He can play Guard and Center.
He was Ranked 34th at guard
Stennie was ranked 79th at Guard
Hainsey was Ranked 34th. Only 32 starting center. That means that Hainsey lost out to a couple backups who ended up starting.

Just by those stats alone, he is a huge improvement. He will also have more talent around him( assuming we still upgrade Center). That will improve his play.
Jason Licht knows his O Linemen.

    Welcome to Tampa Ben Bredeson!

  41. MelvinJunior Says:

It’s a ‘solid’ move along with the Bryce Hall one… Depth at those positions were desperately needed. It wasn’t talked about very much at all, but we were extremely ‘lucky’ with health, last season… Especially, on offense and at two of the most important positions, being QB and WR. The odds of that happening again, TWO seasons in a row, is highly, unlikely. Hopefully, Godwin comes in FULLY healed this season, and with that old ‘bounce’ back in his step. Cause, that schedule for 2024 is starting to look awfully TOUGH. It could be rough sledding. We’re possibly, STILL “two years away, from being two years away.” That could very easily, be true… So, I applaud everyone’s excitement (in the middle of March) and all those who are exclaiming that we are now on our way to the Super Bowl, as “Super Bowl Contenders,” etc. But, that schedule (Baltimore, Philly, San Fran, Dallas, Kansas City, Detroit, Atlanta TWICE), along with The NFC in general, is getting A LOT Better & FAST. We’re still going to HAVE TO ‘win’ the division in order to just make The Playoffs.

  42. Esteban85 Says:

How does Joe watch everything that has occurred in the past few weeks and not have faith that our front office has a plan? Any ideas for what that plan at pass rusher may be? We have an extra 3rd rd pick, maybe trade up for Verse?

Any thoughts or insider insight into who we may be targeting in FA or the draft or are you content to simply kvetch about our gaping hole at the edge?
Leave the complaining to the crowd

  43. Simeon4HOF Says:

JTS looking real sus rn with this Edge need even with Diaby

  44. Keimosabe Says:

Just like Joe to take a positive and turn it to a negative, Id hate to be your wife joe

  45. Keimosabe Says:

Joe, your supposed to leave us with more answers than questions, and so far that’s not the case…..

  46. Tampamac Says:

And Stinnie signed with NY so we in essence swapped guards. Hopefully we get the better end of the deal.

  47. ManzielMadness Says:

I’m assuming (hoping) he’s the Leverett replacement. Really want the Bucs to draft Powers-Johnson but there is a good chance he won’t reach our pick. And it looks like Center is deeper than Guard in free agency. Wouldn’t be surprised if we draft a guard and fill the center position with a vet.

  48. sweti_yeti Says:

“This Joe” might be smoking crack if he really thought this team would be able to afford a significant upgrade to the pass rush in free agency. That opportunity has obviously passed unless there’s another Shaq Barrett type story to play out again.

  49. Keimosabe Says:

@ Melvin, horrible move by the Vikings, especially not knowing who’s gone and who’s left at that spot compared to 2 second rounders

  50. Keimosabe Says:

Would love powes-johnson in the first, will be a hofer, but we gonna definitely have to trade up to get him

  51. infomeplease Says:

The Bucs did need an upgrade at L guard. I hope this guy can get the job done!

  52. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Where’s the money for the edge rusher, Joe? Name the names. This reeks of your awful Tristan/LT takes last year.

  53. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Being that the shortest distance between two points (the LOS and the endzone in this case) is a straight line, the nose guard/DT is the most important position on defense.

  54. rrsrq Says:

Not Bucs related, but Aaron Donald retiring 9a few years too late), lol

  55. Defense Rules Says:

Joe in Michigan … ‘The Bucs got this guy for 1 year, $3.5 mil, I think it was.’

That’s what I saw on one of the sites also. Bucs must’ve thought he had value, because that’s $1 mil more than what they gave Feiler last year (who started for us, for awhile at least). Sometimes all a guy needs is a new team, new coaches, and new opportunities to strut his stuff. HOPEFULLY he turns out to be a keeper.

  56. adam from ny Says:

    wow giants stole away stinnie

  57. adam from ny Says:

depending on the draft…we def could have used stinnie back – even though he didn’t look as good last year

  58. David Says:

No idea how good he is. I know he is best at LG though. Versatile in that he played Center and RG as well. Always a bonus

Yannick Nagakoue ? 8-9 sacks almost guaranteed. I can’t imagine they are sticking with JTS

  59. HC Grover Says:

    Bowles loves Plan 9

  60. gotbbucs Says:

This is a depth/competition signing. This is protection for if they aren’t able to draft an interior O-lineman that they’re targeting.
I’m guessing they still draft two interior offensive linemen. If Graham Barton is there at pick 26 I think he’ll likely be the pick there and be moved to left guard, and probably end up being moved to center eventually.

  61. Scott Says:

This guy is a turnstile. Worse rating on PFF than any of our guards. Credited for 39 hurries and 5 sacks.

  62. chris l Says:

Joe- i dont think they have forgotten about a pass rusher but you assume you can just find one so easily. they cost money and good ones are not just suddenly available. we dont know the cap situation. maybe if they didnt sign evans? i mean listen that is the point of football you have to build a team within certain parameters. i want an egde too but you trivialize it like it is so simple and easy. tell licht you can go on his staff!

  63. adam from ny Says:

ok this seems like a bad signing actually…

licht is usually great at reading o-line tho…so maybe they see something…

this guy finally got a chance to really play last year and basically sucked…so we over paid for him…

his first year in baltimore and year 2 and 3 with the giants he didn’t do sh!t…

then plays last year and was one of the worst linemen in the league,,,

meanwhile the giants countered by signing stinnie

  64. adam from ny Says:

    yowzers…………42.1 rating on pff

unless they see him as a solid backup…i’m stumped with this move…but then again what do i know – i’m just a fan

  65. adam from ny Says:

maybe they liked him coming out of the draft a few years back and he got grabbed up from under our noses…

and now was a chance to get their guy again………….???……..i really don’t know

  66. Rod Munch Says:

“Bredeson started 24 games over the past two seasons at three Giants positions, including guard spots and center. Since coming to the Giants, he’s allowed 65 pressures, including a career-high 39 last year and five sacks last year.”

    ——

I’m with Joe on not really trusting any single OL metrics, but this sounds like a depth signing – not a starter signing. The fact he can play guard or center is a good thing – but it sounds like the Bucs might be in trouble if he’s needing to start.

But we shall see. In any case you can never have too many guys who can play multiple positions.

  67. adam from ny Says:

oh sheet…he’s versatile………..do you think they have plans for him to compete with hainsey for the starting center job ?

  68. Marine Buc Says:

    J. Skule just re-signed with the Bucs…

This lowers the number of open 53 man roster spots to 10.

One will be a QB3 and one will be a long snapper.

So – 8 open slots are left.

We just need to sign one more experienced edge rusher then our 7 draft picks and we are set.

  69. adam from ny Says:

versatile replacement for leverrett…….plays all 3 interior spots….and was maybe told he will be given the chance to compete for starting center job?

    or starting LG job

  70. Rod Munch Says:

As for edge rushers… where are you getting one from? They’re super expensive, and the Bucs spent their money already. Yes, you can manipulate the cap, a lot, but there are limits.

In any case it seems to me Bowles is all on the soft garbage zone, and in that, you just sit back and wait to see what happens.

Regardless, the huge upgrade the Bucs will get at pass rush will come from Kancey, who I think is going to be a monster next year – if he is, then that will make everyone around him better.

  71. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Based on his 2022 tape, the dude’s got some serious potential. Let’s hope the new offensive line coaches can work their magic and turn this turd into a gem. Given our need for more interior linemen, the signing totally makes sense.

    Depth Chart:

LT Tristan Wirfes | Justin Skule
    LG Ben Bredeson |
    C Robert Hainsey
    RG Cody Mauch |
RT Luke Goedeke | Brandon Walton

    Free Agent:
    • G- Aaron Stinnie

    Lost:
    • G/C – Nick Leverett

    Potential Draft Prospects:

    • G – Graham Barton

  72. adam from ny Says:

  76. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam/Rod

    LOL!

I wouldn’t hold my breath on the Bucs making very many more moves this off-season.

I am hopeful they make one more move and can add another experienced pass rusher but it may not happen until after the draft.

    ============

Rookie edge rushers rarely do anything their rookie years – so if they picked someone its to help in 2025, if they even pan out at all since the bust rate is about 50/50.

  78. Marine Buc Says:

    @ LUV

Stinnie just signed with the NY Giants.

So we kind of traded Stinnie for Bredeson.

  79. adam from ny Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS:

can i be a 3.5 million dollar turd as well…i promise to do the best turding in tampa for a cool 3.5 🙂

  80. adam from ny Says:

    yes marine ^^^

    and like doubled the salary

  81. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

“Yes, you can manipulate the cap, a lot, but there are limits.”

    Exactly.

I would love to see the Bucs go after Haason Reddick but it probably won’t happen.

  82. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

“why am i guessing a heck of a lot more will happen than your
“1 more guy +7 rookies move”

For sure – there will be (as always) 15-20 UDFAs signed after the draft.

But as far as new free agents go the Bucs are probably done for now.

  83. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – I never thought the Bucs would spend in FA, beyond resigning guys, they just don’t have the money. Getting Whitehead was the big move, and that was only done because he was here before and the Bucs know what they’re getting.

They’ll sign some guys on the cheap once the players are desperate, but that’s about all I expect.

Which is fine – I never thought they’d do anything different.

One area where they need to add depth and will grab some cheap vets, I’d hope, is at ILB, since outside of David, there isn’t anywhere there that should be playing a lot of snaps – and ILB’s are cheap.

  84. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

I’m fine with paying Bredeson more because he might end up being our starting center or left guard at some point.

  85. Rod Munch Says:

    @ LUV

Stinnie just signed with the NY Giants.

So we kind of traded Stinnie for Bredeson.

    ———–

Sounds like they’re the same guy, except for Bredeson can also play center. Neither sound like they should be starting.

If the Bucs idea is to draft a true center that can play early, and move Hainsey to guard (where I think he’ll be very good), then Bredeson can act as the swing backup and you let Hainsey just concentrate on guard without worry of being forced back to center.

That’s my thinking, but obviously it’s pure guess work.

  86. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

I agree re ILBs but I believe Todd Bowles likes KJ Britt and we will probably draft one with a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Let’s not forget our head coach chose Brit to start over D. White during our most important games (play-offs)…

  87. Capt.Tim Says:

Remember Guys, hes an offensive lineman.
His job is reliant on the people around him.
If you are a good guard, surrounded by lousy linemen, its gonna make you look bad.
    Jason Licht knows linemen.
I think this guy is an upgrade. He was ranked 36th among Guards.
Stennie was ranked 79th. Looks like a huge improvement from that stat alone.
    Im happy about the signing.

  88. adam from ny Says:

    @marine:
    @rod:

i think i need to go take some aspirin…

now that ILB has been brought up i’m getting worse over here…

interior o-line has me feeling woozy, but talk of ILB beyond LVD has me shuffling thru the pill cabinet

  89. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

The thing I don’t like about Hainsey at guard is his lower body.

He’s got chicken legs for an NFL O-lineman.

I like my guards to have arses as wide as a door frame… Like Jenson was.

Remember Frank Middleton? Total road grader with a 4 foot wide arse…

That is the body type I like at guard.

  90. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

    HAHAHAHA!!!

    We will be fine.

    Can’t afford All-Pros at every position…

  91. Rod Munch Says:

Marine Buc – The good thing is that you can absolutely find ILB’s who can play early in the 3rd and 4th round, so hopefully they hit on someone. Also, perhaps Dennis still steps up.

But that depth chart, as it appears now, is scary bad beyond David.

  92. Rod Munch Says:

adam from ny – yeah, I’m with you at ILB, hopefully they have plan. I still assume they’ll just grab a cheap vet, hopefully with some speed. Britt, if he was faster, I think would be a solid starter, but he’s just too slow and it shows up on the field, you can see where he’s trying to get to, and he’s a full step too slow. He still makes plays from time to time, but over the course of a year, that would drive everyone nuts watching him give up 3 or 4 plays a game because he just doesn’t have the speed.

  93. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

Well I guess if our team is going to have a deficiency I would rather it be at ILB and not CB or WR or QB or OT…

I am a little worried about our ability to rush the passer. OLB/Edge is our #1 need at the moment.

  94. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Marine

It just happened a few minutes ago.

    No worries.

  97. Marine Buc Says:

Bucs just re-signed QB John Wolford and Guard Sua Opeta…

That leaves 7 open slots and one slot for a long snapper left to fill.

  98. adam from ny Says:

yeah britt is a very solid tackler and a real thumper…and dude is chiseled…

but if he’s the every game starter, just wait until teams start game planning against him, and all the tape that will surface as the season wears on – on just how to exploit that slow speed…it really is just a speed issue with britt…

and ultimately, one day out of nowhere, LVD is going to just slow down too…it happened to derrick brooks in his final season as a buc – and it was hard to watch because dudes were flying around and he no longer was…

granted he was debatably the greatest buc to ever don the uniform

    Mason McCormick
    Brandon Coleman
    Matt Lee

  101. Marine Buc Says:

Dude is hoping to make another million bucks – waiting for the phone to ring…

Regardless – Trinner has been in the league a long time. Hopefully he bought a car wash like Walter White did or something.

  102. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

I wanted Jon Runyan. Instead, we got th guy Runyan is replacing?

According to Sports Illustrated, he plays center and guard, and the Giants were hoping to be able to re-sign him for depth:

Bredeson started 24 games over the past two seasons at three Giants positions, including guard spots and center. Since coming to the Giants, he’s allowed 65 pressures, including a career-high 39 last year and five sacks last year.

I hope we draft well at the position this year!

  103. Rod Munch Says:

    Marine Buc Says:

    ===========

Edge is obviously the big issue, but don’t discount Bowles just rushing 3 and having 8 sitting back in zone on every passing down. He’s going to be the anti-Bowles, really throw everyone off balance.

  104. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

    LOL!

I know man you are a big fan of that soft zone defense…

It is the bend but don’t break style.

That’s why our defense gives up so many yards but it is top 10 or so in TDs allowed.

Bowles likes to hang back and wait for the offense to make a mistake or his defense to make a big play.

It’s frustrating to watch but 100% of the time it works good enought o win 50% of the time… lol.

  105. It's Corn Says:

it looks like they expect to draft an edge rusher… edge and center o-line were the remaining weak spots, and they seem to be addressing OL today

Hey, Joe, regarding edge rusher, the NFL has this new thing coming up in April called the NFL Draft, where each NFL team gets to select 7 or 8 college football players to join their roster. Maybe the Bucs can find an edge rusher there?

  107. 2023 Surprised the Hell out of me Says:

Bredeson was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round (143rd overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was a reserve lineman for the Ravens when the Giants traded a 2022 fourth round pick for him prior to the start of the 2021 season to help bolster an offensive line that had concerning depth issues. Bredeson has since spent the last three seasons with the Giants, and has played significant snaps at all three interior positions. He had 972 snaps at left guard, 376 at center, and 487 at right guard over his time in New York.

  108. Ed McSherry Says:

Ya, it doesn’t seem they’re looking for starters for the offensive interior line in FA. So, it’s the Draft.

The first round this year is supposed to be loaded with offensive line prospects, but they’re tackles.

The best picks for the interior positions will be in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, which seems to fit-well with the Buccaneers’ “drafting-situation.”

All which gives reason to be optimistic as the plugging-in of the O-line in a serious way is yet to come via the draft.

We’re not really going to have any idea of how good the O-line will be until they actually play in the 2024 season, anyway: plenty of mix n’ matching, pre-season games’ evaluations, etc.

The “trust in Jason” will be: is the O-line this year better than last year?

Well, it pretty much has to be, and last year produced a division-winner and impressive playoffs.
