Bucs Add A Sixth-Round Draft Pick

March 8th, 2024

Former Bucs receiver Scotty Miller.

Hey, sixth-round picks can be really cool. Scotty Miller, Trey Palmer, Keith Tandy and Mike James are some examples in recent Bucs history.

Do the Bucs win the Super Bowl without Miller’s heroics? Joe’s not sure.

Today, the NFL announced the teams that earned compensatory draft picks for the 2024 draft. The Bucs are on the list!

A free pick!

The Bucs did not qualify for a third-rounder, but they did get the final comp pick awarded in Round 6. Here’s the sixth-round docket below, via ProFootballTalk.com.

Round 6, Pick 208: Cincinnati
Round 6, Pick 209: Los Angeles Rams
Round 6, Pick 210: Philadelphia
Round 6, Pick 211: San Francisco
Round 6, Pick 212: Jacksonville
Round 6, Pick 213: Los Angeles Rams
Round 6, Pick 214: Cincinnati
Round 6, Pick 215: San Francisco
Round 6, Pick 216: Dallas
Round 6, Pick 217: Los Angeles Rams
Round 6, Pick 218: New York Jets
Round 6, Pick 219: Green Bay
Round 6, Pick 220: Tampa Bay

Compensatory picks are granted as part of an odd formula that factors in free agents lost by a team to another team during the prior offseason, combined with free agents signed by the original team and performance and salaries.

Bottom line: the Bucs have one more draft pick to play with next month.

Of course it’s the final 6th round pick.
How the hell do the 49ers get boatloads of high compensatory picks?
JL needs to call John Lynch and pick his brain.

  2. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

The Rams got three 6th round draft picks!

  3. BuxfaninTX Says:

Thanks to all of those extra 6th rounders, the 7th rounders that get picked would have been FA signees

  4. DungyDance Says:

Backup place holder, here we come!

  5. Toad Bowels Says:

    Sign Whitehead at S

    Don’t forget Justin Watson….mow has 3 rings

  7. RGA Says:

Every draft pick is valuable, sometimes you find a diamond in the rough.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

We got Josh Hayes and Ramirez in the 6th last year.

Hayes was one of our better special teamers last year as a rookie and the team still likes Ramirez’ potential….

So yea – all picks are valuable if your scouting team is good.

  9. Ugotrobbed Says:

Thought we were rewarded a 3rd rounder for Canales deal??

    —-

No because he was only with the team for one season. Compensatory pick is only after 2 seasons I believe (which, is not great for us)

  11. Gene Says:

Get a replacement for Trask with that pick…I mean why not upgrade your backup QB if you’re going to have Wilson at QB next year?

  12. Gene Says:

3 days away from the potential of a Wilson led BUCS team facing off against a Baker led Alanta team next year. I didn’t think it’d come to this a few months after a second playoff game but if cheap is the name of the game at QB, then the BUCs can put together a solid roster around Wilson(or whoever, plug in cheap QB name here) and surely do well enough to keep themselves out of the top of the draft in 2025 as well.

  13. Olboy Says:

I’ll always have a round ready for Scotty if he ever bellies up next to me. Best sixth round pick in buc history???

  14. Ex-Browns02 Says:

    To Hey Gene Says:

WTF up. Baker Mayfield is your QB this year.

  15. Dom Says:

I still can’t believe we are getting screwed out of a 3rd because Canales wasn’t here for two years. A minority head coach got hired. The ultimate goal the NFL had in mind by giving this compensation was accomplished. Bucs did it two years straight and are 0/2 in getting a 3rd round pick. The NFL needs to change these rules

  16. Gene Says:

Baker’s still my QB, I just think the BUCs have a plan at this point that involves roster building. Tampa’s front office has been pretty darn good at building cheaply and already showed last year that they intended to shed cap weight. Pleasant surprise of Baker playing top ten ball aside, I think they have an alternate plan that they like. Nobody here believes Baker is going to get CHEAPER once he hits the market right? So the plan is someone cheaper and put more pieces in place. That’s what it looks like to me. How do you see it?

  17. Tony Says:

WE’RE GONNA BE DRAFTING OUR TOM BRADY IN THE 6TH ROUND WITH THAT PICK!

  18. Gene Says:

    To Dom says
Believe it. I mean the NFL has built a draft/cap system that encourages middle of the road teams to lose games intentionally, in a HUGELY competitive sport, ust to get draft picks…why would any of it make sense!

  19. Gene Says:

    To Tony says
    I like your style!

  20. Gene Says:

GO, WHATEVER THAT MARGINALLY TALENTED, NOT READY FOR THE NFL, QBS NAME IS AND GO BUCS! 🍸

  21. Gene Says:

Tampa Bay’s like the slightly more stable and successful version of the RAIDERS at this point. I can drink a beer and see where it goes…

How many will make that team tho?

Bucs brass is good at scouring the wires/ cuts

Remember when NE used to a boatload of comp picks every year

    we got a 6th rounder ???

    well it’s quite simple…

let’s just draft the next tom brady

  26. Gene Says:

I trust the BUCS front office to find skilled players…heck I’m on here because they said ” ya know” (hear beer can opened in the background) “I think WE’LL take Baker Mayfield!” I’m curious who their QB deal is though. I think Wilson is a possibility if they think he has anything left but it could be a number of guys. Free agency is one thing but they are playing chicken with Mayfield to start a 6th round draft pick or Kyle Trask, right? There got TRADE in mind maybe?

  27. Gene Says:

    They aren’t*

  28. Bojim Says:

That extra pick is gonna make it tempting to trade down.

  29. heyjude Says:

The free pick could be magic. Wasn’t Brady selected in the 2000 sixth round? And the rest is history.

  30. Levin Says:

“Hey, sixth-round picks can be really cool.”

    Bill Belichick concurs.

  31. Levin Says:

Gene Says: “Get a replacement for Trask with that pick.”

Why? Either you must know more than Mike Evans or you’re a Jameis-loving-FSU-boi. Here is what Evans says about Trask and Mayfield:

“They both have big arms. They’re both very mobile. So they’re similar in that regard. Obviously, they’re a little different in size. But they have a similar play style. Really good NFL quarterbacks.”

My money is on Jameis-loving FSU boi. LOL.

  32. Beeej Says:

This team excels at finding productive players on the middle and lower rounds. (AND, UFA’s)

    The UPPER rounds….meh

  33. stpetebucfan Says:

At some point it becomes a better deal for the player and perhaps even the teams if a guy just drops to FA where he’s free to negotiate and the teams are free to shop.

Imagine Brad Johnson who was drafted in the 9th round. He would be an FA in today’s market.

Sometimes near the end of a draft GM’s feel constrained to go for BPA of what remains…once the player drops to FA then the team can also add needs to that list.

  34. Biff Barker Says:

Lichts tenure here as GM is a whole lot better than Mark Dominic and Bruce Allen,
We should relax and Trust our FO!

  35. Bucben61 Says:

Levin…Baker has multiple playoff victories…Trask doesn’t even have a single regular season win…not one… listening to you and your fellow uneducated traskateers is growing old…it’s obvious to me and I’m sure countless others here that your opinions mean absolutely nothing…you guys twist the facts to suite your narrative and when that doesn’t work you guys just flat out lies. .

  36. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Dooosh

San Fran has had a few minority coaches and executives get hired/promoted to different teams.

The head coach in Houston was the defensive coordinator in San Fran. So that gave SF (2) 3rd round picks – one in 2023 and one in 2024.

I believe they also had another minority coach or executive get hired somewhere else but can’t recall at the moment.

We got screwed with Canales getting promoted to Carolina because he was only with the Bucs for one season…

    It’s a Buc’s life.

  37. Costa Rica John Says:

They should just get rid of compensatory picks and go to a 10 round draft.

  38. JD Still Says:

He won’t be there by the sixth round but if we are starting to pick for future wide receivers I would suggest going after Ricky Pearsall of Florida , He is almost exactly the same height and weight as Chris Godwin, is just as fast , ( 4.4 forty), hands are just as good , if not better, and he is quicker, he would do very well under the tutelage of Chris but is also ready to go now. , he’s tough, not afraid to catch in traffic , and he runs back kicks !

  39. mark2001 Says:

Doosh…SF gets one special pick for their coach, The rest is a pretty straight forward formula based upon contract ranking, offset by the number of FA’s we signed, Overall, that meant one sixth rounder, As an example, teams like the Packers had three, because a few of their FA’s had large contracts, ranked on the top 30 something contracts, and didn’t sign hardly any. The bottom line is the drafting generally, those guys going elsewhere getting large contracts, and the FA’s we sign,

  40. mark2001 Says:

Costa Rica…you miss the point. It is for teams that lose a number of good players(based upon the way other teams value them in FA) to get some compensation for the lost talent. And it is based upon the order of contract/talent, so it is considered somewhat reasonable. The special minority pick is for other reasons.

  41. BringBucsBack Says:

“Scotty Miller, Trey Palmer, Keith Tandy and Mike James”; that’s better than Licht’s history of 2nd round picks!
