Albert Breer: Mike Evans Didn’t Re-Sign With The Bucs To Catch Passes From A Mystery Quarterback

March 6th, 2024

Using logic and reason.

Sometimes, logic is the best tonic.

If you are like Joe, you were sweating while hearing yesterday’s news that Bucs free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield may hit the open market.

But as Albert Breer of SI.com points out, Bucs legend Mike Evans didn’t just re-sign with the Bucs because he likes Cuban sandwiches.

As for Evans, landing more than $20 million per year on a new deal after a decade in the league is good work, even if it’s not the $26 million it was advertised to be. It’s also good reason to think Mayfield gets done, because it’s hard to imagine Evans’s decision was made with a total leap of faith at quarterback.

This just makes too much sense. Evans, through his agent, made it clear he had no interest in playing for an unproven or rotten quarterback. So Joe firmly believes Evans has it on very good authority Mayfield will re-sign with the Bucs.

Joe can’t imagine Evans agreed to stay in Tampa if he thought he’d have to chase down passes from J.J. McCarthy or Joe Milton.

  1. Popcorn Mike Says:

I just read an article from pewter plank were it was said that Mayfield and the Bucs have agreed on a contract that will be announced today. Don’t know how accurate this is but, if true this is very for my Bucs a team I have watched and cheer for 48 years

  2. Hodad Says:

Of course it’s going to happen. Mayfield deal will get done. Still it doesn’t mean at some point down the road Evans isn’t catching passes from Milton!

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

Evans got his 1000 yards with Baker in game 13 last year. That is important to him. Of course it’s Baker at QB this year.

  4. Beeej Says:

Well we aren’t likely to be able to run the ball much better THIS year, but we can certainly pass it, so we got THAT goin for us, which is nice

  5. adam from ny Says:

they probably asked if he’s ok catching passes from baker or wilson…

mike then did a quick google search on wilson, realized he’s a 300/100 guy…

and no that’s not state farm auto insurance…

    and said:

“yeah wilson works…but if he gets an office i get an office too”

    🙂

  6. adam from ny Says:

can mike evans play 5 or 6 more years…

i wonder what the joes and the regular board heads think…?

can mike be a fairly productive wide receiver at 35 or 36 years old?

can mike bulk up to 245 or 250 and become a big possession type receive in his final year or two?
(he came in as a rookie at 241)

can he literally play tight end at 260 in his final seasons…lol…?

(and lastly, can mike and baker start doing stadium commercials together)

  7. Usedtocould Says:

    Pewter plank is gross.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Aahh yes, keep the paper mills churning. Breer’s guess is as good as any of ours. But it’s still just a guess.

  9. ATLBUC Says:

Maybe he wants to play with the best QB in training camp and preseason games last year

  10. Bucswild813 Says:

If Baker won’t take less than $30M/year, sign Cousins. If both are too expensive, sign Russ. In all scenarios, draft Penix.

Lay it to rest, not even Kyle Trask wants to play with Kyle Trask as qb

  12. DungyDance Says:

If we’re talking logic, then Joe’s from yesterday is more persuasive. There’s no way Licht gives the franchise tag to Winfield if Baker’s contract is still iffy.

  13. Cardiac kidz Says:

I believe ME signed first for a fair dollar and equally as importantly that he was going to be the #1 receiver period. He’s a competitor and has Jerry Rice’s record of 14 seasons with 1k yards per year. That mark is hard to hit if you become a number 2 and or go to a heavy run first team. With the Bucs, he remains the guy and has the best chance to get to 15 and eclipse the record.

No let’s draft the best Center so our QB has more than 1.9 seconds to throw the ball.

  14. Boss Says:

of course he did…..as long as this team sucks he will get his 1000 yards

and everyone will be happy smh

  15. mark2001 Says:

Baker is in control. Just admit it and be thankful if he chooses us over the other teams out there. This talk about Wilson or Cousins… please. He proved his worth last year. Just shut up and pay the man top ten QB money.

  16. Gerald Says:

    Traskies sound like Allen Iverson. Yall talking bout practice………practice! 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆

    ……..
    THAT’S A GOOD ONE.

  18. Michal Mad Mike Says:

    All nfl players are overpaid.

  19. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Evans is more important than Mayfield. His career attests to that.

  20. Bucben61 Says:

The traskateers want to hijack every thread…Baker was the 10th best QB in the league by the numbers….the traskateers will spin it a completely different way…all we need to make it to the super bowl is sign russ….worked out great for the broncos

  21. Bucben61 Says:

    Atlbuc options=💩

  22. Bucben61 Says:

Baker Mayfield was 14 out of 15 in the preseason with 2 tds but yeah altlbuc Trask out played him…smoke much crack…you are just flat out lying

  23. Denny Gay Says:

Cuban sandwiches are pretty damn good – not pressed with tomatoes.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

    @ adam

“can mike be a fairly productive wide receiver at 35 or 36 years old?”

I think it is possible. Injuries will play a large roll in ME13’s longevity – as it is with most NFL players.

So far Mike has stayed very healthy and injury free for a decade. He obviously knows how to take care of his body and train properly.

It is rare for NFL WRs to remain highly productive after age 31 but it isn’t impossible – Jerry Rice and Tim Brown are solid examples.

I doubt Evans will stay as productive at age 35 but if he stays healthy he could certainly still contribute.

  25. Marky Mark Says:

Who is J.J. McCarthy or Joe Milton.

  26. D Cone Says:

Bucs had to sign Evans first. mike has had 10X’s as many good seasons as Mayfield and management was not going to give him the impression he is not what he is to the team.

Evans was told “we are going to do everything possible to sign Mayfield but you know it’s a business”,

As far as Mayfield or a can of peas it’s going to come down to someone thinking that there is a difference between the name Brand and Generic when actually the only difference is the label.

Someone was Blah Blahing about the deal is done and we will hear today. So we’ll wait until the deal is announced and then wait a little longer for the truth.

  27. Bucben61 Says:

Dcone you and your fellow traskateers wouldn’t know the truth if you tripped over it

  28. Aaron Says:

Not even the Texans wanted Evans lol plus sure he wants to finish his career where he started I know I would if been there that long

  29. BucFanDMV Says:

I for one will be glad when this is over regarding if Mayfield will be here or not. He had an outstanding season last year, but he has never put together back-to-back seasons that were stellar. I wonder if this is some of the hesitation with the Bucs especially if he is looking for over 30mil +.

  30. MadMax Says:

The Bucs did meet with QB Pratt….a great addition if we can finagle a 5th rd pick somehow.

Yes, Mike could quite possibly play longer than that adam.

Two things come to mind reading your post.

    1) pretty much thought ME wasn’t going to a team with artificial turf. It’s gotten way better but think it still shortens careers

    Which leads to point #

    2) NOtice that ME purposely took weight off over time. Makes him quicker & puts much less wear n tear on the body

    Don’t think he’ll want to become a possession receiver either ….. see pts 1 & 2

  32. Aaron Says:

You just said it Mayfield isn’t worth what he plays his 2nd and 3rd seasons

  33. Tony Marks Says:

    Ugo Says:

Thats right. If he plays with Baker he has to play as Baker or he sulks all through Madden.

  34. Aaron Says:

Never really gave that dude Kyle a chance so why even have him

Traskateer? Now who is spreading untruths? You do know now that I missed the word ‘Averaged’ before the 37 yards less than Mayfield’ in my post yesterday?

Sometimes it happens in haste. Let me pause a minute and make sure to get this right. ” You”. Oops did it again.

“The traskateers want to hijack every thread…Baker was the 10th best QB in the league by the numbers…”

16th best by all the numbers.

    10th was opinion.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The market for Mike Evans was not revealed because it would have been tampering.

The rest was the opinions of talking heads making guesses.

Just like the market for Mayfield.

Also, it is the season of lies. Believe nothing you hear or read.

  38. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Mayfield excels when the coach plays to his strengths. Stefanski figured it out in year 3, year 4 started out good results until JJ Watt destroyed his left shoulder. Year 5 Carolina did what they do best, make their QB look like crap. Bottom line, Canales figured him out, and I have full confidence Coen’s offense will come out hotter sooner than last year. Basically the same offense with same type verbiage, with a few tweaks. The learning curve is gonna be s lot shallower. Add a little beef up front and Big Braelon from Wisconsin please!

  39. Crickett Baker Says:

This is the first year that I ever heard Mike say that he wanted to sign where there was a good QB. He got his first taste of that with Brady, in actuality. lol. He has played great with quite a few mediocre ones for years. I also bet he has taken a LOT of passes from Trask during training camps, and I know he would still play great with him as QB. SO, we just have to see what develops, this year. I think Baker will stay and get better, but we never know.

  40. Calogero Says:

ALL I know is that watching the last game played, Baker lost the game for us by trying to force a throw to double-covered Evans instead of other receivers who were single covered or open.

  41. Bucben61 Says:

Baker Mayfield was one of the more pleasant surprises in fantasy football last year. Left undrafted (or at best, a late-round pick), Mayfield went on to finish 10th in points among quarterbacks in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In fact, he ranked ahead of much more highly touted fantasy options at quarterback such as Tau Tagovailoa, Trevor Lawrence and even superstar Justin Herbert.

  42. Bucben61 Says:

The difference between a traskateer and a bucket of 💩???…the bucket

  43. Larrd Says:

What does “by all the numbers” mean?

Going from Baker’s personality to Wilson’s would be a pretty deflating move. By all the numbers I guess Wilson was good last year, but then again he got benched and cut.

  44. Dubcity Says:

Fans and media made it seem like Baker would’ve latest been signed this morning?? Yet last I heard, the numbers were far apart in negotiations… so… sounds like agent for Baker want 4 years 40 million a year. 160 million w 80 guaranteed… is that what Baker is worth??? Really??

Heck no.. Baker is in his prime athletic age… and the pounding he takes… yea.. thats a terrible investment.. Bucs agree of the deal would’ve been done.

Unless thy find that number both sides like… guess all the crazy Trask people as yall call it… and the Russell Wilson mob… or the draft a QB crowd… or whatever… they get a little bit more right every day that passes.. but carry on

  45. Buc1987 Says:

Bucben61…dude. No one on this thread even mentions Trask but you.

    Trasketeers…is what 5 people…maybe less.

Just cause someone talks bad about Mayberry does not mean they are Trask fans.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

“it’s hard to imagine Evans’s decision was made with a total leap of faith at quarterback.”

    ———

It’s obvious the Bucs plan — they’re just waiting for New Orleans to release Winston. Bam! Now that would make Evans happy!

  47. Buccaneer rick Says:

    Bring in Joe Milton

  48. BigBuck Says:

Apparently, Daniel Jones $40 mil a year is the bench mark.
