Jason Licht Wins Again

March 24th, 2024

Let’s make a deal.

Not quite two weeks ago, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht shipped his best cornerback, Carlton Davis, to Detroit for a third-round pick.

Later, speaking to the local pen and mic club in a sidebar session at a Bucs press conference, Todd Bowles marveled at being able to pry a third-round pick away from the Lions for Davis.

Joe’s biggest takeaway from that was, “You got rid of your best corner without addressing a sorely-need edge rusher all for a third-round pick?”

Well, this weekend, the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs unloaded their best corner, budding star L’Jarius Sneed, to Tennessee for a third-round pick.

Joe’s first reaction was, “Where were the Bucs? That would be like swapping Davis for Sneed. That would have been a win-win for the Bucs. Got younger and probably better.”

(Yeah, yeah, yeah, Sneed wants a big contract. Joe’s worried about production on the field. The accountants will figure the rest out later — the Bucs have proven that over the past few years.)

So if you believe the Chiefs got fair market value for Sneed, then what does that say for what Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was able to heist from Detroit?

Licht, and the Bucs, won again.

Now for the love of Warren Sapp, go get Haason Reddick.

Zyon stayed in Tampa last off-season.

He came back jacked up and ready to rock.

He’s going to do it again this off-season.

Zyon had one of the greatest combine workouts of all time for a CB.

Dean was truly our number 1 CB anyway.

I’m great with Dean and McCollum, Whitehead, Winfield and Izien.

With the extra 3rd round pick, we can get a young outside CB to develop behind Dean and McCollum.

Hayes is our backup nickle for years to come.

    1st round- Center
    2nd round- Left Guard
    3rd round- inside linebacker
    3rd round: cornerback
    4th round: Free safety.
5th round: center/guard. Insurance policy and competition.
7th round: a stud who dropped because of an injury.

Chill….edge is coming after powers…. Braswell with our 2nd.

Give it up Joe…. The Bucs are not about to make the same mistake they made paying an almost 30 y.o Barrett huge amounts of guaranteed $ based on past performance. We’re STILL paying for that mistake ($17M dead cap hit in 2025).

Other than getting long term deals done for Winfield and Wirfs – The Bucs are done with big spending for this year.

Getting a 3rd rd pick out of Detroit for oft injured Davis with only 1 year left on his contract WAS impressive. I figured a 5th at best when there was earlier talk of trading Carlton.

Bucs were going to let him walk in FA next year anyways – which MAY have netted a 4th or 5th rd comp pick in 2026. Instead, we get a 3rd THIS year which can be used now to either draft another CB or bolster the OLine.

So yes – the headline is accurate. Jason Licht wins again!

  4. Hodad Says:

If we paid a corner top dollar how could we then also afford an edge rusher? You don’t make sense Joe.

  5. ATLBUC Says:

I read an article that says the Bucs are pursuing Clowney.

  6. Bucs Guy Says:

1st and 2nd – Edge and Center based on BPA. May consider trading back if top 3 Edge and top 2 Centers are gone. That will also get you an extra day 2 pick beyond what you have already.
    3rd – Guard
    3rd – ILB
    4th – Power RB
    6th – WR
    7th – TE
Not a sexy draft, but building the trenches needs to be the Bucs priority in the first 2 days so they can get an average running game.

  7. Bucs Guy Says:

I would be good with Clowney on a 1-2 year deal and drafting an Edge in the 1st or 2nd round.

  8. MoeB Says:

You like guys without a personality and quiet unless you give them the okay for leadership. People that express there feeling you have a problem with that. The chickens will come home to roast!!!!!

  9. Brandonbucc Says:

    Clowney is hot garbage

  10. dmatt Says:

Dean is fragile n often injured. The best ability is availability. Does he work out n train during off season? We need a backup plan for Dean. I’m not quite sold on McCollum at this time. He’s just like OJ Howard, Jaelon Darden, JTS, n Scotty Miller, for their position, they have speed, n speed only. I believe Bryce Hall will take the corner position vacated by CDavis. And, let’s be done with the Clown known as JTS,n bring in the real Clowney.

Sneed has two questionable knees but played last year.

In a putrid division Licht has the easy path to looking like a genius.

Just go 9-8, make the playoffs, hope for a damaged opponent in round one, Eagles last year were cooked, then fail miserably against quality opponents. Rinse and repeat.

Wake me up when we start beating teams that are above 500.

Licht is a snake oil salesman.

  15. Aaron Says:

I think the Bucs will move on from Dean / (Contract) after this year…Plus, we will probably move on from Godwin (Contract) after this year. Adding that to Evans 2yr deal – I’m hoping we draft Wr / CB in the 1st/ 2nd round then turn to Oline/ pass rusher in the 3rd/ 4th round…

    Go Bucs!!!

  16. Conner50 Says:

You’re clearly a slimy saints fan who is still butt hurt about losing to the Bucs in the playoffs which was Brees last game of his career! Shut up loser

Yea the NFC south was considered the weakest division last year however Tampa still won with the worst running game and serious interior line issues. Give them some credit because we still came close to going to the nfc championship. Also Licht is a great GM, top 5 matter of fact make it top 3 at least. He deserves credit when credits due and he is the sole reason Tampa got their second Super Bowl so put some respect on his name.

  20. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Hey Everything is Rigged, last yer we were toying with 3-4-5 wins if we got lucky. Instead, 9 wins, 1 playoff win, and 1 win from NFC title. Pretty good for snake oil, let’s roll the dice again.

  21. Brandon Says:

We haven’t gotten Reddick for a good reason. Licht knows way more about our personnel and Reddick and his situation more than anyone else ever could. I think he’s earned our respect and trust. Get off his back already.

If you take into consideration the Bucs were being picked to win between 2 and 5 games, they had a great season. You probably would’ve been happier if the Bucs had a miserable 2 to 5 win season, huh? Misery loves company, and you wanted the rest of us to be miserable with you?

  31. Defense Rules Says:

BucsGuy … I like you’re thinking. 1st & 2nd Rnd for Edge & Center based on BPA (fill 2 starting NEEDS) like you said. I’d modify our two 3rd Rnd picks a little though, to grab a ILB & power RB based on BPA (fill 2 starting/rotational NEEDS). With our 4th Rnd pick I’d go TE or Guard, again based on BPA (both of those positions NEED upgrades, but not as badly as the first 4 positions mentioned). Last 2 picks (Rnds 6 & 7) I’d just go BPA to add depth where needed based on previous selections & remaining holes. I’m getting more & more optimistic about this upcoming draft.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Todd Bowles marveled at being able to pry a third-round pick away from the Lions for Davis.’

There was a very good chance IMO that the Bucs would’ve released Davis prior to Game 1 this year. His availability was barely 75% (76 games in 6 years out of the 99 regular season games we played). And last year was the highest Yards per Completion (14.4) that he’d ever given up.

Most impressive though is that the Lions took Carlton’s contract off our hands. We’ll still have to eat his past signing bonus, but we still save a bunch of money by trading him. Getting a 3rd Rnd pick in addition to that is fantastic gravy because that player COULD end up playing a major role for us this year (HOPEFULLY we use it to grab either a power RB to complement Rachaad or a ILB to replace Devin White).

  33. Mr. Editor Says:

There is a larger context to this discussion because Detroit just cut their top CB for off the field issues in Hillsborough County. What did the Lions know, and when did they know it?

  34. geno711 Says:

Camerson Sutton was an easy cut. He has legal troubles, and he was rated by one group (PFF) as the 107th best out of 127 rated cornerbacks by that tribe.

  35. geno711 Says:

As one Detroit fan tweeted about him:

Have you tried looking for a WR running down the sideline? You should be able to find Sutton about 10 yards behind on the ground.

  36. Jerseybuc Says:

    Joe.
Every position on the field cannot have guys making $15 million, you have to layer the contracts both on expiration and cost. Dean is highly paid and so was Davis. They are going with Z and or a new corner from the draft on the other side.

  37. HeavyE Says:

I hope we get rid of Dean, and keep Godwin……Please!

  38. Pewter Power Says:

Just because riddick gets those sacks don’t mean he’s good for this team. I’d prefer an in season trade maybe. He’s in a contract year so he might do all Devin white the eagles trying to get cut or traded. Bucs don’t have drama with contracts that’s what matters to me

  39. Capt Ahab Says:

I’m not upset that Carlton Davis is gone due to his stone hands and injury history however, replacing him won’t be easy. I’m not sold on McCollum as a premier corner. He’s a tremendous athlete, not certain he’s ready for prime time. The free agent signings seem like back-up material. The Bucs are not better at corner.

  40. TampabayDJ Says:

@RiggedNFL – Fail miserably against a quality opponent ?? Really ?? Bucs almost won the game if the clock didn’t run out ! Lol, you must not have watched the second half of the season when the Bucs went 6-1 to close out the regular season, and beat the defending NFC Champs, who started the season hot . Then gave the Lions all they could handle in Detroit by the way. Fake fans are the worst

Zyon lived at OneBuc last offseason. Hours and hours of tape. He went from special teams to rotational starter. He just got challenged to become a FT starter. He’s a grinder. He’ll get there.

  42. Esteban85 Says:

We draft CDIII in the second round, get 6 years out of him where he gets the daunting turf toe, misses a shîtload of games over the years, wins a Super Bowl with us and we turn around and flip him for a third- two six rd picks?
Sounds like JL and co. are smooth operators.
