Todd Bowles Explains How Dave Canales Was Good For Baker Mayfield

February 29th, 2024

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales worked magic with Bucs free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield in their lone season together. It’s a big reason why Canales is now the head coach of the Stinking Panthers.

Canales has been, directly or indirectly, credited with the development of Russell Wilson and had a hand in the rebirth of Geno Smith.

Then Canales came to Tampa Bay and in his only season with the Bucs guided Mayfield to a Pro Bowl and a career year.

So earlier this week at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked why was Canales good for Mayfield.

“His calmness number one,” Bowles said. “His calmness, his attention to detail, his positivity [and] he was always building him up. There were quite a few coaches on the staff that kind of did that – Thad Lewis the quarterbacks coach did that as well, wide receiver Coach Brad Idzik did it, and the offensive line coaches helped him as well.

“But, Dave was very good at bringing everybody together, hearing ideas and, you know, helping Baker be the best he could be.”

So Canales is in Carolina. Enter former Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen. Canales has set a high bar for Coen to reach. It’s Pro Bowl and/or playoff wins for Coen to reach.

The question now is, will it be with Mayfield or someone to be named later?

    Lol.
No, the Bucs arrnt going to let Mayfield walk.
    How could they?
Fans would run Bowles and Licht right out of town on a rail.
    This is Baker Bay.

He will sign a fat contract.
Of will get a fat Franchise tag
But Baker Mayfield is going NO-WHERE

  2. D Cone Says:

You never know. Maybe three or more QB’s will opt out of the Pro Bowl again next season and Mayfield gets two in a row.

Maybe 31 other teams will turn down the Lombardi in 2024 too.

  3. It's Corn Says:

My feeling is it was way more Mayfield than Canales. Guess we’ll see with Bryce Young.

  4. Baking with Evans Says:

    Baker is here to stay.
    LFG!!!!

  5. HC Grover Says:

Nobody can hel Young. He is a Bust.

  6. JimBobBuc Says:

I remember the first two or three games well. Sometimes Baker would throw the ball away rather than forcing it. When Baker came off the field, I could tell that Canales was telling Baker to be patient, encouraging him, and supporting that decision.

    Many fans would thank them

  8. Jack Clark Says:

The only person good for Baker Mayfield sorry as was Mike Evans, he can make any quarterback look good.

  9. Lord Cornelius Says:

Man i got faked out by some misleading headline on MSN about a Baker Mayfield contract lol.

It was just a link to a projected guess, but that guess was 4 years 120 million which would be solid as hell if that’s it.

  10. Bucsmarley Says:

Baker bay are you serious 😂😂
We have decided to settle for a .500 qb and you think he’s the savior?
There is a reason he’s been on 4 teams in 6 years
As I’ve said before even a broken watch is right twice a day
Remember when we commit to baker and he reverts to his normal .500 self I won’t say I told you so. No way is he worth Daniel jones money

  11. BakerBucs Says:

Typical D Cone says u r a coneheads, let’s get smart pro bowl recipient as a fill in what better way to get pro bowl MVP & passer competition winner against cj.stroud so what does an underdog do you do exactly what baker go get the job done

    Baker bay are you serious

Yes he was and so was Licht when he said this week everyone he meets wants Baker back.

    You know what that means?

the five haters haters ( with multiple usernames )here don’t represent the fan base

    You are all fake

Its Baker’s and Bowles Bucs Baby.

  13. Student of the Game Says:

Bucsmarley, TB was a 9-8 team. Only golf and tennis does 1 guy make the team. The QB is only 1 of 11 on the field at a time and doesn’t play a down of defense. QB play was good enough for 3-4 more wins. That’s why he will get 100 million plus for 3 years somewhere else if not in Tampa. If he leaves, don’t bitch when the team he plays for beats TB.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

We need a Baker poll so the Baker Boys will STFU when they see the results.

  15. Bucsmarley Says:

IDE like to see that poll for sure.
Trying to justify a qb with a pro bowl games.
I suppose you think baker is better than stroud fro a pro bowl comp😂😂
Anyone that would take baker over Cj stroud is amusing

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Canales has set a high bar for Coen to reach.’

Bucs finished 9-8 with the offense ranked #20, scoring 348 points … not quite 20.5 PPG average. Yes we made the playoffs, but the NFC South was the only division where a 9-8 team won the division (the Packers were the only other 9-8 team to make the playoffs … as a Wildcard in the NFC North).

Personally don’t consider THAT to be a particularly high bar Joe. My HOPE is that Coen helps us score at least over 400 points this season (only 3 PPG more). We’ve got a somewhat tougher schedule this year, and gut feel is that our defense will be hard-pressed to match the #7 ranking (19.1 PPG average) that we had last year. Offense will almost surely have to improve on its’ scoring for us to repeat as division champs.

  17. Bucsmarley Says:

Just so the mayfield fanboys hear this
I have nothing against mayfield. He’s a middle of the pack qb who had the luxury of throwing to Evans ( who has made all qbs look good even counting his drops) just doesn’t make sense you think baker is one of the greatest ever😂😂
As I’ve said he’s likeable, a team guy, shows flashes but will always be in the middle of the pack. Just saying ide like to find our qb of the future and he is not the man for that job. I would love for him to prove me wrong but I would bet the house he won’t. Only reason we made it to the playoffs was because are division is garbage making him look like unicorns and rainbows

  18. Student of the Game Says:

Defense Rules, 9-8 yes is not that impressive unless you also admit they won in round 1 and were in the game until the last minute of round 2 when only 8 teams are left. Which suggest the 9-8 likely included a good number (4 by my count) that should have won.

  19. Student of the Game Says:

Bucsmarley, what kind of house do you have?

Bucs made it to the round of 8, so what do you consider criteria for “QB of the future”?

  20. Bucsmarley Says:

Should not of even made the playoffs if our division wasn’t so lousy lol. Be honest how many games did you watch. I saw all and recall many more games where baker played awful until the fourth quarter lol. Inconsistent. Yes his Green Bay game was great. Eagles were down and out when they reached the playoffs and we were competitive with Detroit who are kind of clones of us. But if I remember correctly how did bakers final drive go😂😂

  21. Bucsmarley Says:

    And I have a beautiful house😂

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Student of the Game … ‘Which suggest the 9-8 likely included a good number (4 by my count) that should have won.’

I’ve made that contention several times myself, although I think the number is closer to 2 than 4. However, we also won a couple of games that we probably shouldn’t have won (gotta love Lady Luck though).

That said, do you honestly believe that 9-8 will once again win the NFC South this year? Would you be satisfied with another #20 ranking on offense, scoring 20 PPG? Oh and with the Bucs fielding a number of new players on defense this year, do you feel confident that we’ll once again rank in the Top-10 defensively, and allow less than 20 PPG? Inquiring minds want to know (I shouldn’t use that; it was actually a marketing gimmick created by the National Enquirer back in the 80s, except that they spelled it ‘enquiring minds’).

  23. Texasbucsfan.com Says:

A 9 & 8 season says it all Nothing to get all excited about. An average QB that some people seems to think he won a Super Bowl for Tampa. Difficult to say how Canales was for the Bucs..Nothing special.

  24. Marky Mark Says:

    Great

  25. SB Says:

    No need for comment here.

  26. SB Says:

    @ DR……
I love you man but don’t waste your energy so much on those who Will not understand. Unless that helps you then…do your thing. #Respect.

  27. David Says:

The Bucs won the lottery with Baker. He’s finally going to be the franchise QB he was drafted to be. Cleveland is a joke.
The reason he made the Pro Bowl is because smart football fans know Baker carried that team to the playoffs. Mike Evans is dying to play with him again..

  28. WyomingJoe Says:

David: What the hell did you do with the real David?

  29. Gene Says:

Man it’s hilarious to come in this forum and read all the comments from the same guys over and over proclaiming their ignorance about QB play with each anti-Mayfield post! 😂 Read every word guys and remember these clowns as you go forth to read other articles from real football experts like Ariens who’s the best in the biz, teammates of Baker’s(that’d be ACTUAL PRO FOOTBALL PLAYERS), and coaches who’d love to have him on their roster. Baker is not only skilled but good in big games, can come from behind to win and plays great in the playoffs. If this particular team takes a little less than they could easily get in free agency, the BUCS could be set for some really good seasons ahead. But these naysayers will still be here crying 😢and mocking 💩on Joe’s dime! Enjoy 2024 and GO BUCS! 🏈

  30. Craig Says:

Hey, it was good for Canales. I haven’t heard him chasing after Baker with a big bank truck.

Baker will be back, the first Bucs QB to get a second contract. He’ll get fat and sassy over the break, and Trask will blow him out of the water next camp, and preseason.

I hope I am wrong, because I like the Bucs to win, but I can’t see it happening again.

  31. Jack Clark Says:

@Gene are you comparing the comments of people who have been here since Tom Brady won us our second Super Bowl to the new baker mayfield fan boys?

  32. beeej Says:

hard to tell, most of them change their names like high school girls change their hair styles

Nah we’ll only STFU if its an official Buc’s poll that rival’s Licht’s own say so this week – which ain’t happening.

WordPress Polls are known to be easily tampered with especially with posers who like to pretend with multiple names.

  34. Heath Hunt Says:

I don’t understand why it’s hard for people to realize the situation this franchise is in right now. They were not going to get rid of Licht after the SB win and then eating all the cap hits this past season. They could have made Bowles a sacrificial lamb but instead they earned a playoff berth and not just because of the division. They also had a tiebreaker over Green Bay. They have some old pieces like Evans and David and a major question mark with Baker but also some young good players like Winfield that honestly if you were in a true rebuild would need to trade because his effectiveness at S would likely not be relevant when the team is ready to contend again. The most effective way to get better is try to remain competitive and discard pieces that are less likely to be important as they age. I don’t see it working out but from their perspective I can see what they are trying to do.

  35. Dave Pear Says:

Bucsmarley must be a comedian with some ingested enhancements .

It thinks that Daniel Jones is better than Baker Mayfield.

That’s like someone trying to propose that Madeline Albright is prettier than Jennifer Aniston.

    High comedy (double meaning intended).

  36. Rod Munch Says:

On a more important note, did you see the video of Tom Brady going out and breaking his drafted 40 time? He ran a 5.28 when drafted in 2000, then just ran a 5.12.

I know the people say that Brady is slow, but I’ve never seen a QB over 40 move as well as he did – then when you’re talking 44 or 45-year olds, who else is there, Vinny Testaverde maybe? Old Vinny looked like a complete stiff that could barely move at the end.

That’s very impressive. Hopefully the Bucs just laugh at Baker wanting $40m, and resign Brady.

Ken and barbie accessories don’t count.

“who have been here since Tom Brady won us our second Super Bowl ”

In other other words bandwagon “fans” . We will boot you off the wagon come playoff times next year

  38. Vinny from NYC Says:

Bucs1987, how about this for a poll, when I moved to the Bay area when the Fox pregame show ended we got an infomercial for the Ninja food processor not a game. Bucs had great fan support (not). My son’s Pop Warner team had a better fan base. You haters gotta hate we understand that but better face facts Bowles and Baker have proven to be winners.

  39. Buc king Says:

I’m not impressed with baker as everyone else.
I see very good qbs available and the draft has some good ones too.
Cousins and Wilson being 2 outstanding qbs.
I don’t think baker earned the money he wants.
The team didn’t look dominate as they should have.
The oline was trash and run game was weak but even so i didnt like his qb awareness and his arm flutters at times.
He loses against the good teams..our record was garbage..I think he’s a 12 to 15 million dollar qb with incentives included

  40. Buc king Says:

I don’t see him winning a super bowl .. my crystal ball says he will buy intonhis own hype and ego..
Baker won’t he better next year unless we give him a lot more weapons..a run game..another tight end..another good handed receiver and pressure to be better then he has been.
I can throw 2k in yards to just evans and Godwin in basic offense..
Which is what canopener head was calling.

  41. Davyboy Says:

Well cone, one thing for sure, if Baker is all pro again he will beat all the Pro Bowl qbs in the precision passing contest AGAIN. He’s just that good. Not to mention the STRONGEST arm in the NFL. So what we know is this, Baker has the strongest and most accurate arm in the NFL. I would think that talent would fetch $50 million at a minimum. Throw in he played 4 games with a broken shoulder!!! Brutally dependable. It’s just too good. LMAO

  42. Davyboy Says:

Hey Marley, when a qb follows the greatest qb of all time and has a better season with basically the same team, yes I would emphatically say he is a great qb. So in your mind when a qb follows the greatest qb of all time and does better he’s just average… Your funny

  43. Davyboy Says:

Munch, why would they sign Brady? Baker won more games, didn’t he??

  44. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

I saw Kyle Shanahan was praising Baker. Yeah, he was saying how quick his decision making was, decisive was the word, how strong his arm was, how he could make plays with his legs and protect the ball. Shanahan doesn’t praise people very often. I guess he really respects Bakers All Pro game. Shanahan has been to 2 superbowls, right? So I guess he really knows talent when he sees it, huh guys?? What a talent!!!🤑🤑🤑 Pay the man and lets go Bucs🏴‍☠️
