The Dominance Of Antoine Winfield

February 28th, 2024

Major money coming?

Yes, Bucs stud safety Antoine Winfield had an awesome 2023. In fact, Joe doesn’t know if the Bucs win the division without him.

Yes, Winfield was that dominant. Yes, Winfield was that much of a game-changer.

Consider Winfield led or tied for the lead in the NFL in forced fumbles (6), fumble recoveries (4) and sacks by a defensive back (6).

As Al Davis used to say about great players, Winfield “tilts the field.”

Currently per Spotrac.com, Derwin James — “DERWIN JAMES!” — rakes in the highest average annual salary for a safety at just over $19 million a year.

With the salary cap raised last week, does that mean Winfield’s agent is looking north of $20 million a year when the free agency dinner bell rings two weeks from today?

It’s crazy but he can get 20 mill or more a year he’s the best safety in the league

  2. jarrett Says:

i love my bucs as much as the next guy, but the lions rookie toasted winfield jr similar to cooper kupp did him in that playoff game

    real bucs fans dont forget

  3. Dave Pear Says:

He managed to play well despite the zone bust scheme and lack of assignment discipline thanks to poor coaching. He needs to be a Buc. He probably should be a player coach.

If you are going to knock Bowles for poor coaching then you have to credit him for putting Winfield in position to make plays all over the field. The two sure touchdowns he prevented this year were some of the most memorable plays
in all my years of watching the Bucs.

Jarrett- the guy is an all pro but he isn’t perfect. Even Brady threw INTs in his career. Throw the baby out with the bathwater huh? Do you only accept 17 shutouts as an acceptable defensive performance? The good massively outweighed the bad from AWjr.

  6. SlyPirate Says:

Um, didn’t Joe just write an article yesterday that paying Winfield was too much spend in the backfield. Oh, the life of a journalist. Waffles, anyone?

  7. Buccos Says:

It was probably a career year for AW31. Nonetheless we must pay him what he is currently worth, which is a lot. Probably the best player on the defense. Right now he is in rarified air

@jerrett fan do remember but are you really saying because 2 guys beat him he is not worth the money

  9. mark2001 Says:

He would be every penny of it to a team that could use his skill, youth and leadership skills, in a new defense, at a position of need.
