The Allure Of The No. 1 Overall Pick

February 16th, 2024

Trade Tristan Wirfs to the left-tackle-needy Bears along with the Bucs’ 2024 first-round pick for the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft?

It’s a fun debate over a steaming plate of Hooters wings.

However, this post is not about that.

Joe is sharing words from 2023 Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who recently visited SiriusXM NFL Radio. Now the Panthers head coach, Canales is tasked with reviving the career of 2023 No. 1 overall pick quarterback Bryce Young.

Canales was asked about the challenge and talked about how being around a No. 1 overall pick is a different animal, something he didn’t experience during 13 years with the Seahawks.

Canales said there’s something very special in “the type of talent, the type of human that comes with that selection.”

The reflection intrigued Joe considering Canales was a position coach for nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, the 2020 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. Wilson was a third-round pick. But more important, the first No. 1 overall draft pick Canales was around is Baker Mayfield, per Joe’s quick research.

Joe wonders how smitten Team Glazer is with Mayfield as a former No. 1 overall pick. And Joe has to think that matters a lot. The guys signing the checks have to believe Mayfield is a face-of-the-franchise guy who can win them a Super Bowl.

If so, he’s sure to get a long-term contract very soon.

But Team Glazer might be a tough sell after what happened with their first and only No. 1-overall-pick QB.

I’d rather have Jameis than Mayfield…. More upside, more entertainment

    5109 passing yards 33 TDs

  2. CleanHouse Says:

    Check yo sheet

  3. Zzbucs Says:

I don’t trade Wirfs not even for god!!!
Maybe Godwin ( if Evans comes back) not Tristan…..

I heard Ira said this in the podcast, it hurt my ears !!!

I respect Ira a lot but I strongly disagree in this one!!!!!!

  4. sasquatch Says:

Clean house might need to clean his brain.

    Jameis isn’t even a starter. 🤣🤣🤣

    What a boob!

  5. BuucccNASTY Says:

I meeeeeannnn. I love Wirfs, but I’d love an elite QB for the next 10+ years even more

  6. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Love the franchise tag for Mayfield. Life changing cash for him. Optionality for the Bucs.

  7. BucfaninMi Says:

    @ CleanHouse 30 ints

  8. WyomingJoe Says:

Let’s get real. Thanks year, Wirfs and the Bucs #1 might get you the #8 pick but not #1. Then you lose arguably the top LT in the League. Not a smart move.

    @ CleanHouse: You’re really funny…

  9. WyomingJoe Says:

    “This” year …

  10. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Cleanhouse

Mentioning Winston’s yards and TDs without mentioning the INTs and pick 6s is disingenuous.

I’m not a huge Mayfield fan either but at least he did a solid job of protecting the football.

Look up the stats. What happens when you have 2+ turnovers per game?

I will give you a hint – the answer is not “winning”…

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Just noticed that the folks at PFF posted a Free Agent Ranking recently that had Baker Mayfield at #75 (no idea how they were ranking FAs). Interestingly though, here’s what they said about Baker …

‘Mayfield made the most of his starting opportunity with the Buccaneers and at least left the door open to be involved in future training camp battles for starting jobs. He has brought his pressure-to-sack rate way down to 18.3% during the regular season, well below his rate over the past two seasons. The former No. 1 overall pick kept his eyes downfield amid pressure and made more plays outside of structure than normal, with a heavy dose of RPO and play-action concepts from new offensive coordinator Dave Canales moving the pocket and simplifying his progressions. Mayfield still puts the ball in harm’s way too often, but he showed signs of individual growth in yet another new offense.’

They didn’t list any potential Market Values for him, but it doesn’t sound like they were very impressed with his 2023 performance based on ‘at least left the door open to be involved in future training camp battles for starting jobs’. Bizarre write-up.

  12. RBUC Says:

I don’t think any of these QBs in the draft will become franchise caliber QBs

  13. sdm5821 Says:

You have to go back to Eli Manning in 2004 as the last QB drafted #1 overall that won a Super Bowl for the team that drafted him. Mathew Stafford (drafted in 2009) did win a Super Bowl, but not with the team that drafted him. Not exactly a winning track record over the last 20 years. Prior to Eli you have to go back to Peyton Manning, drafted in 1998 as a first pick overall to win a Super Bowl. Let that sink in …

To sum it up, the draft is a crapshoot with no guarantees.

  14. CleanHouse Says:

    Haha that’s fair Marine Buc.

    I still loved Winston’s YPG

  15. Mac Says:

Drake Maye will be like a Matt Ryan I think. Williams is a bust I feel for sure. All the warning signs are there with him. Not sure about Penix or McCarthy though.

  16. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Trading an All-Pro quality tackle like Wirfs for the #1 draft pick could be one of the stupidest trades in NFL history.

We know what Wirfs can do and he’ll only get better at his new position of LT.
But predicting the future of QB’s coming out of college is exceedingly difficult.
That’s why so many 1st round picks (like Jameis) have been a bust and others (like Mr. Irrelevant who just took his team to the Super Bowl) were bypassed until the later rounds. The GOAT, Tom Brady, was drafted in the 6th round!

Only Cleveland’s front office would be stupid enough to make a trade like that!

  17. Lars Tatersalad Says:

I love Wirfs, but Mahomes just won the Super Bowl with Donovan Smith at left tackle. Find your qb, then figure it out.

  18. Since76 Says:

I would be ok with trading wirfs for the number one pick if the bucs personnel dept thinks a franchise QB is there. You can draft another competent tackle in the second and get by. You cannot find a franchise QB every year. If he’s there and you can make the deal you make it. You can build around that QB for a decade.

  19. Gipper Says:

Professional sports is a land of make believe. The guys who play for Tampa Bay don’t really represent Tampa. Most don’t even live here year round. Same is true for most cities with professional sport franchises.
We invest way too much time thinking that these sports mercenaries represent “us.” They don’t. They are hired hands who play games. Sports, especially professional football is a pleasant distraction.

  20. gp Says:

Wirfs is a proven generational talent. The Bears would have to start the negotiations with both their 23 and 24 first rounders just to get us to listen to them. It would still take more.

    __________

    Don’t forget the 12 fumbles, 9 lost.
The guy is a generational talent……… for turnovers.

  22. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Maybe it’s just me but getting rid of proven NFL talent for prospects is stupid.

  23. BA’s Red Pen Says:

CleanHouse is totally trolling you numb nutzes.

  24. SB Says:

First, Lol @ Cleanhouse’s myopia and nuthugging ability regardless of chasing a Burnt flame.
It seems obvious to me that we need Mike to sign First for this kind of domino effect to slide our way. I think we will se soon how the Bucs feel about Mike AND visa versa.
And to DR… Stop giving so much wisdom and behind the scenes things that some of these guys can’t take. 🙂

  25. SB Says:

Trade an All Pro Tackle for Who?
    ………Crickets………
    Williams? Questionable Maturity
    Maye?……Huge Jump.
Daniels?… Best Fit but too much cost if Mayfield comes back.
So why don’t I just sit back for a month or so and Dream about Selma Hyak eating crackers in my bed!

  26. White Tiger Says:

    This has to be post-trolling.

Why would ANYONE trade the best LOT at the PEAK of his performance…for a QB in this years darft.

With no one to protect your shiny new baby goat, he won’t live long enough to become Mahomes.

    Silly technique, but pretty successful.

  27. garro Says:

Someones been in the wacky weed again!

    Go Bucs!

    ——

Silly analysis on their part. Whenever you have that many players ranked the work load tends toward making uninformed write ups. You would have to think Baker would sign a sub 20 million dollar contract to think he would be signed to battle for a starting job.

and if baker were signing for such a low amount he would have quite a few starter spots to land even if he were just a bridge.

  29. MJC Says:

LT are a premium. Even if considered it. Tristan would command 2 First Round Picks. Anything else is a waste of time.

Just because the panthers gave the Bears 3 first round picks and WR does not mean the rest of the league has to follow that stupidity

  30. Bucs33Saints14! Says:

Elite QB + poor protection = losing seasons, a la Steve Young. Those excellent LTs don’t grow on trees. But the math goes both ways. Excellent LT (Donald Penn) + poor QB (Josh McCown) = 2 and 14 in 2 oh and 14. That leads us back to the draft of Jamis Winston.

I really wanted Jamis to succeed for us, but it is near impossible to get to the playoffs turning the ball over that much.

I say keep Baker and Wirfs. You need good parts working together as a team to win.

  31. Jerimy Hunter Says:

Always found it weird to count a QBS pick-6. There’s 10 other guys out there who you want to make the tackle

The second an breaks arm tackling someone everyone will say he should’ve let him go

  32. Show Me the TDs Says:

From this day forward I will never consider reflecting on Cleanhouse’s opinion, the validity of which is zero. Jameis?!?! HAHAHAHA

  33. Ethan Says:

sdm5821 Says: “You have to go back to Eli Manning in 2004 as the last QB drafted #1 overall that won a Super Bowl for the team that drafted him. Prior to Eli you have to go back to Peyton Manning, drafted in 1998 as a first pick overall to win a Super Bowl.”

Wowza! So in the last 26 years only 2 quarterbacks drafted #1 won a Super Bowl for the team that drafted him? That’s amazing. And yet Joe and others here want to draft a quarterback with multiple ACL tears and he’ll be our savior? There’s a reason nobody pays them for their opinion.

  34. BUCman Says:

This is the stupidest suggestion I have ever heard. Trade a future Hall of Fame left tackle and a first round draft pick to move up and pick an unproven rookie quarterback that at best has a 50 percent chance of making it. Laughable!!!!! Which looks better: QB-Mayfield, LT-Wirfs, C-Jackson Powers Johnson (potential 1st round pick) OR QB-Calab Williams, LT-Skule, C-Hainsey.

  35. Marine Buc Says:

The Chicago Bears are the biggest dunder heads in NFL draft history…

Picked Mitch Turbisky with the #2 pick in the 2017 draft.

The Cheifs picked Pat Mahomes with pick #10 – oooooops.

So much for “expert analysis”….Just goes to show you even these “Pro scouts” and coaches are just as clueless as we are.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  36. mark2001 Says:

The Bears are smoking if they think Fields has huge value. From what I’ve seen, his a a more mobile version of Jameis. Wirfs is amazing. What a pick… and felt so at the time. But even at that, he exceeded my expectations.

  37. mark2001 Says:

Marine…I think many scouts focus too much on the arm and the legs, and not the eyes and what is between the ears. And some underestimate the heart, and dedication/ sacrifice to winning. Not saying it is easy to measure the later things, because the coverages and defensive talent is so inferior to the professional game. But seems to me that is where most of the failures have rested.

  38. WillieG Says:

“ But Team Glazer might be a tough sell after what happened with their first and only No. 1-overall-pick QB”

If I owned the team, I’d be more inclined to think that Mayfield is more like Brady and Johnson than Winston. Two veteran QBs who were let go by their teams and came here to win it all.

  39. Esteban85 Says:

Blasphemy! Trade Wirfs!!?? I’d rather trade anyone else on the team. Besides why would you want to trade a sure thing for a 50/50 roulette wheel spin?

  40. Marine Buc Says:

    @ mark2001

“I think many scouts focus too much on the arm and the legs, and not the eyes and what is between the ears”

I agree – that’s why Brock Purdy was the very last pick of the draft the year he came out of college.

  41. Lakeland Steve Says:

Cleanyohouse, So you would rather have Jameis than Mayfield? So you are good with losing. If you don’t remember we had famous Jameis for 5 years. He had real nice stats especially 30 interceptions. So why don’t you become a Saints fan so you can root for him while he rides the pine and we will enjoy Baker Mayfield and look forward to some more playoff wins.

  42. Joshua porter Says:

I’d take the deal from the bears in a heartbeat. Patty dosent have a left tackle and just won a superbowl. We can find good o-line play all day everyday with Jason. If Caleb turns out to be the next patty people are going to be mad they didn’t try and move up to #1 . By the way wirfs is a stud and only way I give him up is with the #1 pick.

  43. Timbucs2 Says:

How are there Ja-bobos saying they prefer Jameis over Baker? Jameis’s “upside” includes 20+ guaranteed turnovers. Baker had a top-5 all-time Bucs season for anyone not named Tom Brady. It blows my mind.

Our let-down this year was the defense, not Baker. If we don’t give up two 4th Q touchdowns to the Kitties, we are in the NFCC Game.

  44. Towered Says:

The Bucs are proven winners with veteran QBs. The league owners are mesmermized by the prospect of getting the next ten year franchise guy on a rookie contract. Many owners are making bad decisions as a result of this. Tampa is THE team that should capitalize on this. Warm weather, first rate training facility, no state tax, and a race ready team looking for a driver.

    Pay Evans and Winfield.

Russell Wilson would sign a bargain contract to have the chance for redemption that Baker has last year. he’s getting paid anyway.

Sign him, draft another project qb, move on from Trask.

  45. Joe Says:

The league owners are mesmermized by the prospect of getting the next ten year franchise guy on a rookie contract.

Billions as opposed to millions with 10+ years of winning and exposure will mesmerize anyone.

  46. Towered Says:

Well Joe, getting mesmermized leads guys to spend grocery money on scratch off tickets. The odds of getting that ten year guy are too low to build a team around the prospect of getting one. I don’t think Baker is The Guy. Paying a premium for him is mistake. If you don’t have The Guy, why not just keep signing the most talented guy with something to prove, as you continue to draft QBs in hopes of finding The Guy?

  47. BakerBucs Says:

Cleanhouse says u sir need to cleanup r locker cause u r as dumb as anyone in this site Winston never had a winning anything

  48. BakerBucs Says:

So get ride of wirfs + to pick # 1 what start from scratch thank God none of u morons have zero input on any matters with this team

  49. BakerBucs Says:

Did u know of the 53 guys on the squad who r the 2 highest on this roster works & Mayfield morons

  50. kaimaru Says:

    @Defense Rules
They also had Devon White at 73. LMFAO Aldo Kyle Dugger who is rated as a 68th out of 95 safeties as 20 yet Xavier McKinney is 43! What a joke
