Flat Out Disrespect

February 26th, 2024

Hated.

The Kyle Trask Occult is infecting other NFL sites.

How does Joe figure? Well, you have to be a special kind of sauced or a member of an occult to think a runaround rookie quarterback who played all of four games is better quarterback than a quarterback that had his team a heartbeat and a burp (if not a timeout) away from an NFC title game.

But that’s seems to the unique mind of Derrik Klassen of The 33rd Team.

Klassen had a pre-free agency ranking of quarterbacks. He had Colts QB Anthony Richardson ranked 16th Baker Mayfield is 20th.

Also, future Hall of Famers (Joe uses the term dripping with sarcasm) Geno Smith and Kyler Murray are head of Mayfield.

Klassen also has Dak Prescott ranked over Joe Burrow. Joe hopes Klassen admits he’s on prescription drugs to try to save his name.

The Baker Hate always surprises Joe. Not sure what Mayfield ever did to get people so p!ssed off at him unless it is how he used to regularly spar with a certain reporter in Cleveland.

Or is it because noted sports savant Colin Cowherd used to beat Mayfield up regularly?

Man, if you have Richardson over Mayfield, you may as well admit you have an agenda. This is just irresponsible.

  1. ATLBuc Says:

Joe, maybe people are looking objectively at the season he had. He made some great plays but he made just as many, if not more, bad and horrible plays. A QB’s ranking has nothing to do with how far the team got. It is based on their individual performance throughout the year, not just the last few games.

  2. a horse with no name Says:

JOE: “The Kyle Trask Occult is infecting other NFL sites.”

The only cult I see is the Cult of Baker, headed by Chief Cultist Joe, who I hear is an FSU alum. My brother is an FSU alum, and trust me, you can’t get those cult members to think rationally when it comes to players from other Florida schools.

  3. Boss Says:

looks about right to me. no disrespect……just perspective

  4. Tim Says:

I think you mean the “Kyle Trask cult, not occult”

  5. DoooshLaRue Says:

That is a seriously flawed list.
    Dude is a tard.

Boss…your mom’s calling ..your lunch is ready

  7. uhmmm Says:

Mayfield was pretty good last year. Had a Couple great games. A lot of clunkers. Some mediocre games. and a few decent games………..

  8. Steven007 Says:

This Joe really has a hard time with the word occult versus the word cult. It’s the cult of Trask. Not the occult.

  9. Bucben61 Says:

Mayfield had a great year by any statistical measure…throw in the fact that he was playing on a new team with new oc and rebuilt offensive line and what he accomplished is truly amazing.
Anyone spouting otherwise clearly have no football intelligence…none

  10. Usfbuc Says:

Power rankings are always terrible. Murray and Smith are both way too high.

  11. Usfbuc Says:

And what is he power ranking them on? What has Herbert done to be ranked so high? It looks like he is ranking some based on their potential and other on their past performance.

  12. Tony marks Says:

Its actually pretty simple to explain.

Human beings CRAVE being right. We blow up countries, marriages, relationships , businesses and everything we love for that primal desire.

We LOATHE and a great percentage of the population will ALWAYS avoid saying and admitting “I was wrong” and they will go to their grave before maturing to the point when they can fully admit to being wrong.

Rationally ranking Baker higher implies being wrong about him before last season. Thats all there is to it. We see the same thing play out almost daily in the comments. THe goal post just kept moving all season

    first it was

“Mark my words witht his middling QB we will never get more than 6 wins”

Couldn’t say “okay i was wrong” so it shifted to

“well we will never have a winning season with this middling QB”

Okay so that was wrong too but they couldn’t let it go they were wrong so it became

We can’t beat a team with a winning record with this middling QB”

    Ooops…so it changed to

“What sense does it make to make the playoffs just to be shown we don’t belong with this middling QB”

We beat playoff teams shoqing we deserved to be there. It shifted to

We wil never be a contender for the Super bowl with this middling QB

and I guaranteed you shoudl we ever win a super bowl give it two weeks max and it will shift to

“well we would have won the SB with any QB. its the rest of the team that carried us with this middling QB.

Theres no government agency or drug you can give some one to force them them to mature to admitting being wrong. That requires a moral and charactr strength that very few possess.

  13. BucFanDMV Says:

Interesting list for sure. Mayfield did have an outstanding season this past year, but he also had a lot of ints dropped by defenses especially in that SF game and Carolina. I think some people believe he will regress back to what he is sporadic and not the benefit of having a weak schedule or weak division..

    .

A QB’s ranking has nothing to do with how far the team got

See what I mean Joe? Puuuirrfect illustration of just can’t admit to being wrong.

Before the season began it was all about how far a QB can take you. Now in order to escape being wrong its a 180. Now rating a Qb has nothing to do with how far the team gets.

and the kicker is alot of the times they will shift back and forth in the same thread so fast they give you whiplash. “Look where Mahomes got his team” ( so how far the team got counts) but speak about Bakeer it will be back to “how far the team got doesn’t matter.”

Takes guts to admit beign wrong and most people dont have that kind of guts.

and how dar a QB takes you

  15. SlyPirate Says:

10-11-12-13 are headscratchers. Goff is getting disrespected.

  16. SufferingSince76 Says:

Just more bulletin board material for Baker Mayfield.

  17. Marine Buc Says:

Holy moley – D. Watson is ranked #27?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

    Hey Cleveland – OOOOOOOPS!

As far as Mayfield goes – he should be ranked at least @ #15 or so. I am not an avid Baker fan but he is obviously better than #20.

Plus two of these QBs are coming off AH injuries and Richardson can’t stay healthy either.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

Dak, Kyler, and Richardson are all 3 ridiculously over rated.
Mayfield and Purdy are criminally underrated.

Pretty apparent that list is agenda driven.
Typical for our current political climate.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

What criteria did this guy use to rank the players? The whole list makes no sense. Great bulletin board material for Baker and the offense.

  20. Lord Cornelius Says:

lmao what a random worthless ranking list. But I guess what else are people going to write about right now

  21. ocala Says:

    Ridiculous!
Baker was a top 10 QB this past season. Bucs struck gold getting him in free agency last year.

  22. BuxBoltzRayz Says:

To be fair, I’m pretty sure anytime a UF player gets mentioned in any positive way whatsoever, it’s legally required for an FSU fanboy to chime in with their panties in a bunch. Seems like little brother syndrome? Either way we’re all Bucs fans here so I don’t see why it’s so hard for yall to coexist.

  23. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Not the biggest Mayfield supporter, but he played better than Trevor Lawrence, Kyler Murray, Anthony Richardson, Geno Smith, Jalen Hurts, and Jordan Love.

  24. bucsfaninOregon Says:

This is total B.S. Ask Shanahan if he would rather have Geno Smith rather than Purdy.

This reminds of some (a lot!) with a political outlook.

  25. Mort Says:

Stanford, Prescott and Richardson are WAY too high.

  26. It's Corn Says:

For better or for worse, the Bucs need to just declare Mayfield their guy and give him a multi-year contract around where that franchise tag $ value is.

Consider this, if they had drafted him let’s say 5 years ago, number 1 overall, and he just had the year he had, they’d pay him that kind of money and not think twice about it.

  27. ATLBUC Says:

If Bowles would have named Baker the starting quarterback from the beginning that would be one thing. Instead he said that Baker and Kyle would compete for the starting job, a competition clearly won by Kyle based on Joes daily training camp notes. Nevertheless the starting job was gifted to Baker.
That leaves many reasonable Buc fans thinking that Kyle would be better than Baker in live games if given the opportunity. Apparently Baker feels the same because he cost us a few games playing hurt because he didn’t want to go the way of Bledsoe.

  28. TampabayDJ Says:

    @Tony Marks – Very well said !

  29. White Tiger Says:

Baker is probably #14 or #15 – and if you improve interior line & RB in FA & mid round draft picks – it allows you focus on a stud edge rush/DB in the first round – the team gets better and can win with that #15 ranked QB – especially if you re-sign Mike Evans, AWJ, LVD & McLaughlin!

    Let’s GO!!

  30. Pickgrin Says:

Looking at that list – there are 8 teams (not including the Bucs) that don’t have their QB already set for 2024.

Vikings, Bears, Broncos, Falcons, Foreskins, Raiders, Steelers and Patriots.

Minnesota will likely re-sign Cousins, Bears will likely trade Fields to another one of these needy teams and draft a QB #1. Foreskins draft 2nd and will draft a QB. Patriots draft 3rd and will draft a QB.

So assuming Fields goes to one of the remaining 4, that leaves only 3 teams who don’t have a QB lined up already or have an obvious plan to get one.

Falcons pick #8 and may well take the 4th QB off the board. So that basically leaves the Steelers Raiders and Broncos without an obvious path to get better at QB. One of them likely makes a trade for Fields. Broncos or Raiders MIGHT take the 5th QB in 1st round as they pick #12 and #13 respectively.

Point being that there are realistically only 1 or 2 other teams that the Bucs would have to “compete” against for Mayfield’s services under center this year.
And none of them have an equal much less better situation for Baker to step into.

All this talk of other teams driving up the price for Baker and $40M+, etc is hogwash….

  31. Critmark Says:

Putting Geno ahead of Goff tells you all you need to know about this list. Goff had 900 more yards, 10 more TDs, better completion % and better Rating & QBR. Once I got there, I stopped reading to see if this was April 1st.

  32. TampabayDJ Says:

@ATLƁuc – I usually agree with you about most things you post, but you are wrong in this case . Baker didn’t make as many or more mistakes than great plays . I recall him running for his life most of the time, and still finding a way to make a play , or being smart enough to throw it away. His stats don’t lie. If it were Trask last year, he would have been sacked 50 times ! Baker slipped out of sooo many sacks, it was ridiculously awesome to see. He never panicked, and he got the job done. Not to mention the fact that he was the QB who had to follow Tom f-in Brady ! That’s a lot of pressure on its own. If Davey boy Canales didn’t jump ship , we would be really looking forward to an even better season this year. Go Bucs

  33. Defense Rules Says:

Someone needs to tell Derrik Klassen that there is no 33rd team, although that’s far from the only thing he’s got wrong. Read his rationale (it’s all over the place BTW), and his list fulfills his ‘Pull It out of Your Arse’ criteria.

UsfBuc gave 2 perfect examples: ranking Murray at #11 and Smith at #12. I’d also throw in Tua, who Klassen ranks at #19 (8 spots below Murray). Tua sports a 32-19 career record, and was 11-6 last year, throwing 29 TDs against 14 INTs; 69.3% completions with 4624 passing yards. Murray in comparison has a 28-36-1 career record, and was 3-5 last year, throwing 10 TDs against 5 INTs; 65.7% completions with 1799 passing yards. Neither PERFORMANCE nor POTENTIAL favors Murray. But he is short (5’10” & 207 lbs) so Murray apparently has that going for him in Klassen’s eyes.

  34. D Cone Says:

Blah Blah Blah. Blame Mayfield’s poor play @ CLV on a Non Throwing shoulder. Blame Bad play in 2022 on ‘So many OC’s’. Blame his 20th ranking on Trask? How the Heck you came up with that has to be the Booze.

As Mayfield has a New OC this season you have another excuse for him in your pocket in case he really sucks it up this season with the Bucs.

As far as Geno’s ranking Mayfield should be happy Smith is ranked high as he has created o New market for Miss Fits that Mayfield is now a part of.

BTW is the “Most popular Bucs Blog Ever” Self proclaimed? Joe and Mayfield must be peas in a pod as He thinks he’s a top 10 QB too.

  35. Tye Says:

Jackson at #2 and Murray in the top 20 is all one needs to see to realize this guy is just listing his feelings about each QB…
Neither one of those guys are that good at being an all around QB!

  36. DBS Says:

Poor babies still crying and can’t read. STOP conveniently leaving out parts of the practice notes. Also included in a competition is WHO had the playbook down the best. Now look at the day Bowles named the started and see WHO had it down better. Traskies will never accept Baker was named starter. If he is re-signed it will be another tragic day for them.

  37. Steven007 Says:

ATL, a mistake you and many others are making is ranking Joe’s training camp notes above the evaluations of the coaches on the team that the quarterback is going to perform for. We all love Joe, this is the best Bucs blog there is, but Joe is not a coach. He’s an observer. Just like you and me. And his acumen is probably also in the vicinity of ours, not the coaches. But this is a trope used by many in the trask camp. Which is silly because it doesn’t matter. Coach’s decisions matter. Bloggers decisions and opinions and observations matter far less.

  38. BrianBucs Says:

Klassen should have saved this list until April 1st

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    Tony marks…you need help.

You’re waaaaaay too much in love with Baker Mayfield.

  40. Popcorn Mike Says:

    ATLBuc, well said

  41. Outrigger Says:

Baker’s not the only one this guy had Richardson ahead of. He also put him ahead of Purdy, Hurts and Tua. Until Richardson proves himself I would put him somewhere in the mid 20s.

  42. Gipper Says:

    ATLBUC,

Many of us are pulling for you and hope you get your way with Trask in 2024. It would be great if Baker ended up in ATL and played Tampa 2x in 2024. We all will be interested in your perspective after those 2 games. The overwhelming majority of Tampa fans, players, coaches and ex players point to Baker as a main reason for Tampa 2023 success. There is a core of congenitally disgruntled types like yourself who refuse to admit defeat. If you get your man Trask in 2024, many of us will be reminding you each week of your posts.

  43. Gipper Says:

Baker had a better year than #5 Matthew Stafford. These lists are designed to be controversial. There is a huge component of subjectivity in these things. When Baker signs his massive new contract, we will get to ultimate truth.

  44. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

The guy is on some good (bad?) Drugs. Lawrence above Burrow? My a$$. And as far as Baker, people like to do that “head to head” crap like..”Mahomes owns Josh Allen”. Fun fact, Burrow has never won vs Mayfield as a starter head to head. Is Baker better? Probably not but he sure AF is close

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“The Baker Hate always surprises Joe. Not sure what Mayfield ever did to get people so p!ssed off at him…” and “a quarterback that had his team a heartbeat and a burp (if not a timeout) away from an NFC title game” – Joe

The list is very flawed…but…Baker Mayfield is getting far too much credit from Joe regardless.

First off…saying Mayfield was that close is a complete fiction. More like an Interception away, which was on him. He, in short, choked.

I get being supportive of the players, but man…no wonder half the people here make up stuff.

  46. Since76 Says:

Not disgraceful to state the obvious. You have to look at Mayfield’s targets compared with other QBs. You also have to remember that people in the media were so up on Winston too. Are those people as crazy as klassen????
Those same media types might be the same ones who love Baker. Boy were they flat wrong then and most likely flat wrong now.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

My honest evaluation puts Baker at around #16.

Oh wait, that’s not an evaluation…that is according to his stats…so it is factual. Nothing made up. Simply…the unbiased truth.

The overwhelming majority? What is your source?

  50. geno711 Says:

Cult refers to a group or movement that is centered around a particular religious, philosophical, or ideological belief system. On the other hand, occult refers to supernatural or mystical practices, often associated with hidden or secret knowledge.

For some reason, I have a bias to “Geno” Smith.

Just saying seems like a lot of extraordinary love for the guy.

  53. Suhs Twin Sister Says:

. Instead he said that Baker and Kyle would compete for the starting job, a competition clearly won by Kyle based on Joes daily training camp notes.

BULLETH and this lie by ommission comes up often so I looked it up and now have it a text file so I can copy and paste when this lie is made again. The Qb competition included training camp and the preseason. Did a joe say Trask led ” a little”in training camp? Yes but look at what the Traskie ocult member left out

    Aug 13 2023
Article title: bucs observations from friday night

“For Trask to get the QB1 gig, Joe believes, he had to out-practice/play Mayfield by a lot. He outplayed Mayfield a little in training camp. But Friday night Mayfield WAS CLEARLY THE BEST QB.”

So NO despite the constant lying about Joes notes at no time do they indicate Kyle won the competition in general. What they indicate is Kyle took a serious setback when finally playing another team. He looked rattled . threw a pickand I beleive took three sacks

IF you suck or choke that badly in a game againt other teams (of which you have limited games to impress) theres no reason to claim you won the competition.

  55. Mike Says:

    Baker, Baker, Baker
He summed up his true ability with the last pass he completed during the playoffs to the lions defender. All of that running around and extending plays as they say means nothing if you don’t win, it’s about being consistent not on a few games then off a few games which is what his career has been about, look it up.

  56. Bucben61 Says:

In standard yahoo fantasy leagues Baker finished as the #10 scoring QB…just saying

    Don’t believe in make believe…ok…winning record..playoff victory…MVP all star…can’t remember…did Brady accomplish that last year…

  57. JustVisiting Says:

As a guy who grew up as a Michigan fan, the whole FSU vs. UF thing here kind of cracks me up. I mean, I love to see Wolverines succeed in the NFL, but that’s what I +want+…I don’t get it confused with what actually happens. I don’t see anything Trask has done to get TB fans excited about him. It’s like me arguing that Denard Robinson should be in the NFL Hall of Fame; I wish he earned it, but wishing don’t make it so.

  58. Montana Says:

The fact is we just don’t know. Trask may do well if given a chance. He nearly beat out Mayfield in training camp. Baker had a good year and I’d like to have him back, but playing Trask and having 35 million extra to spend in other areas could possible be better.

    ATLBUC,

There is a core of congenitally disgruntled types like yourself who refuse to admit defeat.
    ——————————-
I’ve been a Bucs fan since they came into the league. Players come and go, yet I am still here. No matter whether its Jack Thompson, or Baker Mayfield who ever lines up under center on Sundays, I will be pulling for them. Even if Baker Mayfield takes us to a super bowl victory, based what I have seen with my own eyes, I still believe Kyle is better. And I am going to feel that way until I see differently.
Now the big question is: Is Bowles going to force the new OC to start Baker like he did with Canales?

  60. Gene Says:

I’m so glad that the people working Baker’s contract know the QB position SO MUCH BETTER than the ignorant unappreciative bloggers(or SAINTS FANS) commenting on this site. The Browns Baker for Deshawn is now know as the “worse trade ever” In NFL circles and even their stupidity wasnt as dumb as some of the “Baker’s not that good” assessments offered here. I don’t know about a Kyle Trask cult, but that’s an easy one. If the BUCS are as dumb as the Baker haters(haters is used because your venom doesn’t represent facts), which they aren’t, they can start Trask next season and Atlanta will, most likely win the division and Tampa will be fortunate with Baker, Evans and anyone else who can get out gone, to finish ahead of Carolina.

  61. a horse with no name Says:

ATLBUC Says: “If Bowles would have named Baker the starting quarterback from the beginning that would be one thing. Excellent factual analysis! Congrats! We never see anything like this in Joe’s endless Baker puff pieces. Just venom and name-calling directed at those who dare think Trask might be better. Sad.

  62. Red86 Says:

For a guy who lead a team that struggled to get TDs in the first quarter in multiple games, rarely scores 7 after a turnover from our defense, and show life in the 4th quarter either in victory or defeat. It’s not surprising he’s near the halfway mark in the rankings. After all the team finishes 9-8 in the season. 1-1 in the playoffs. Looks very average at best. Baker never scored 4 tds or more and elevated his game when necessary for the Bucs. Several qbs on this list have multiple times.

Are there qbs that are ranked higher and lower than my liking? Yes. But, everyone has their own opinions. Nothing to get bend out shape over.

  63. Jprewitt Says:

Who one Pro Bowl MVP, skill test, got his new team into the playoffs AND had the ONLY perfect passer rating in history at Green Bay? Some would be happy with a career like this , but this was in one year for Baker and what was supposed to be the Buc’s that were supposed to finish in the cellar.

That was noise from the outside. Every Bucs fan who knows this team thought we would win the division. This team overcame a poor performance year by Brady and won the division and overcame a poor performance year by Baker to win the division. And before you tell me about Baker’s “career year”, remember, we had a QB throw for 5000 yards and sent him packing.

  65. Crickett Baker Says:

That list is so awful that I believe it was published just to get outraged clicks from a lot of fans of different teams!

As for Baker, it looks to me like he is just getting better and better. I do not see him regressing nor reaching a ceiling. We should lock him up.

  66. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

  68. IvanT Says:

Are you serious? That was sandlot flag football.

  69. Gipper Says:

Joe, you threw the wolves some red meat with this article and the Hate Brigade saw it as an opportunity for some sort of redemption. In truth, Tampa got very close to an NFC championship game with a coach and QB that they have mercilessly attacked the entire 2023 season. No one in the anti Bowles/Baker camp foresaw the success that Tampa had this past season. The Hate Brigade has moved on to a new tactic saying that 2023 season wasn’t a success at all. As I noted earlier, Baker had a better season by every measure than #5 list rated Matthew Stafford. Doesn’t matter to this bunch. Soon Baker will sign somewhere a massive contract with large guarantees. The pundits here will respond with their usual disjointed noise. Of course it is ironic that they are now arguing about how many mega millions Baker should be paid. Baker and his believers are getting the last laugh.

  70. Rusty Shackleford Says:

Florida QB’s are always trash. Kyle Trash and Richardson are no different.

  71. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bucben61 Says
“In standard yahoo fantasy leagues Baker finished as the #10 scoring QB…”

Doesn’t matter. First…it’s fantasy. Second, if you average out his overall stats, he places at 16th in 2023. Facts. Not Fantasy.

  72. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Oh, and last I checked? 16th is exactly in the middle of 32, making Mayfield Average at best.

But…he’ll have a chance to improve upon that. I hope he does…but I’m not going to lie about his current status.

  73. Tony marks Says:

“Oh, and last I checked? 16th is exactly in the middle of 32, making Mayfield Average at best.”

wrong again. There are NOT just 32 Quarterbacks in the league. NO starting QB is average by mathematics pr by skill set . Each team carries at least three so being to 16 puts you mathematically in the upper region of QBs.

  74. Bucben61 Says:

Baker was 9th in yards…7th in tds passes…6th in 20+ yard completions…2nd in 40+ yard completions…I can go on….these are real stats…so was the 30 interceptions Jameis thru his last season in Tampa as a starter…of course he thru for over 5000 yards and that more important…just ask atlbuc

  75. Pickgrin Says:

I was just about to post the sameish thing Bucben61

Where are you getting 16th from Bonzai??

    9th in passing yards – 4,044
    7th in TDs – 28
12th in TD to INT ratio – 2.8
    12th in QB Rating – 94.6

What important metrics are you including to try and bring his overall rating down to 16th best QB??

Mayfield’s stats in 2023 were edging top 10.

At worst, Baker was the 11th or 12th best QB in the league statistically in 2023….

  76. BillyBucco Says:

  80. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Pick

    I agree.

However there were several QBs who were injured last season who were not able to rack up a bunch of stats.

Joe Burrow and A. Rodgers comes to mind.

Do you really think Mayfield is better than Burrow or Rodgers just because of last years stats?

This is why I believe Baker should be ranked @ #14-#16 or so. He isn’t a bad NFL QB but he isn’t really top ten either.

  81. JD Still Says:

Disrespect ? For Mayfield? LOL! I have noticed most of the people shouting insults here are shouting insults against Kyle Trask! I believe We have a bit of gaslighting going on here, the Mayfield sycophants , in orders to stop people from listing the actual Mayfield stats they don’t want people to mention , such as his finishing stats, right in the exact middle of the pack , ( the very definition of mediocre) , 20.5 points per game scored when opposing teams scored just one point less per game , so they shout “Disrespect !” In order to silence them! All year We teetered on the edge of disaster, and if you haven’t noticed , all the other teams in the NFC-South are making significant efforts to improve , not to mention We face a tougher overall schedule next year , while we are attempting to simply maintain the status quo , but like swimming in a river, there’s no such thing as staying where you are , you are either moving forward or you are losing ground , it’s not hateful to point out that We have to improve or disaster is where we will end up.

  82. Davyboy Says:

I can tell you why the hate for Baker. He spanked Mahomes twice in college and some just can’t deal with that. The other 50% are still mad over him beating Ohio State at home and after defeating them he planted an OU flag at “their” 50 yard line. So…

    9th in passing yards – 4,044
    7th in TDs – 28

He is just picking one ranking that siuits himself and tretendng it alone is a fact.

  84. Rod Munch Says:

I’ll take Fields, Watson and Young any day of the week over Baker.

While Young looked terrible, just watch the ALL-22, he almost never had anyone open. If you dropped him into the Tampa offense with Godwin and Evans, I think he would have had a decent, if unspectacular, year. I could be wrong, he might be ruined, but I’d rather have his ceiling over Baker, who just showed everyone his ceiling this last year, when he was 18th in QBR and 20th in scoring.

As for Watson, I know people love to bash him for off the field stuff, but at least from what I saw of him this past season, he looked great, had some amazing pinpoint passing. Oh, and of course, I’d absolutely take Winston if he’s actually healthy.

But I will agree that list is pure nonsense, there is no way Ridder should should be ahead of anyone but Zappe.

  85. Marky Mark Says:

Did anyone rank DePervert Watson above Baker? Baker was immature at one time like many of us at a young age. I think the antics in college keep following him. Also he has been aligned with the political right so the left attacks him as a matter of course.

  86. Dom Says:

Some of yall are too much man. Coming up with all these theories and psychoanalysis on why he isn’t rated as high as you think he should be
It’s football guys. It ain’t that deep. You guys are just biased. I’d have Baker a little higher than 20 but he’s not too far off from that. He’s not better than the first 15 guys on this list. There is some changes I’d make in the top 15 but after that I’d put Tua at 15 and Baker at either 16 or 17. It’d be between him and Hurts and Purdy for that 17th spot.

According to PFF Baker had 25 Big Time Throws and 24 Turnover worthy plays. That isn’t very good. I thought he played well in 9 out 19 games. That isn’t very good either. The offense was 19th in 20.5 points per game. That isn’t good. The defense meanwhile was tied for 6th with 19.1 points per game which is great (obviously there were still low moments and improvements will need to be made).

The team wouldn’t even have made the playoffs if the defense didn’t bail Baker out the last game of the season. AW Jr basically made Baker 10-15M more per season with his heroic efforts vs the Panthers to save the season. So anyone giving Baker the majority of the credit for the Bucs success this sesson is just flat out wrong. The positive though is Baker closed the season strong and hopeful with a second season with the same system and same guys around him he can be more consistent.

I’m sorry but a guy that hasn’t been able to string together two consecutive good seasons in his 6 years playing and is on his 4th team in a year isn’t going to inspire much confidence from people outside the Bucs. Baker was a bad year away from being viewed as a back up QB. This context matters. Some here just over rate Baker. He’s an average B level QB that will be in the top 12-18 QB tier throughout his career.

  87. Dom Says:

I’m sorry Tua at 16 and Baker at either 17th or 18th

  104. Dom Says:

    @Tony Mark’s

You literally made a whole post on society and human behavior that had nothing to do with football. Most of what I said was facts. The team stats were facts. The defense held opponents to under 21 points in 10 games in the regular season. Only 13 teams didn’t average more than 21 points or more per game, which included the Bucs. Those are facts. The defense was the strength of this team. Statistically speaking that’s a fact. The defense bailing out Baker in the last game is facts. The PFF stats are obviously subjective by PFF but pretty reliable.

My claim that AW Jr made Baker money is speculation but I don’t think there would be much talk of a big 40M+ per year contract extension if he closed the season playing bad two games in a row, choking a NFC South championship in the weakest division in the NFL, missing the playoffs, and not having the opportunity to go on the nice little playoff run he had. That’s pretty reasonable speculation.

He hasn’t had two good consecutive seasons yet in the NFL, thats statistically a fact. The narrative before this season began was if he flopped this year he’d be a backup QB. Why do you think the Bucs were able to get him so cheap? The NFL market even thought he was a backup level QB. Again look at the contract he signed.

Saying he played well in 9 out of 19 games is an opinion but generally backed up by statistical facts. I thought he played well vs the Vikings, Bears, Saints game 1, Texans, Titans, Packers, Jags, and his two playoff games. If you want to debate other games be my guest.

And I want Baker back for the reason I stated in my post as long as they dont over pay and handicap the cap. I think he can improve and be more consistent in his second year in the same system with the same core players. He showed some promise. Especially in the playoffs. But I’m not afraid to call a spade a spade, be honest about his season, and the QB tier he has shown that he belongs in based on his career so far. That can obviously change in either direction based on his future play. And I want him to play well. He’s the QB of my team. You just worship the guy

  105. Jack Clark Says:

Apparently everyone knows baker mayfield is average at best except Joe

  106. WyomingJoe Says:

  107. Capt.Tim Says:

Soon, Jason Licht is gonna stand next to Baker Mayfield at a podium.
Licht is gonna happily Announce that we have locked up our Franchise QB
    To a long term Contract.
5 years, with a team option year 6.
40 million a year. Mayfields value in the free agent market.

And we will lose a handful of posters their hearsts wont take it.
The remainder will be in horrible shape, especially when Woolford moves past Trask on the depth chart.

Next year, Trask rookie contract expires. Team cuts trask. O one picks him up.
That’ll push the last couple over the edge.

  111. Rod Munch Says:

    Bucben61 Says:

    Baker was 9th in yards…

    ——-

Fun fact – There was only 9 QBs that started 17 games last year.

That means Baker was last in passing yards among QBs that started all their games.

Also, again, Baker was 18th in QBR and 20th in scoring — in a career year — and in a year where only 9 QBs actually started all their games, meaning he was being compared to a ton of backups and still finished 18th and 20th.

Baker was fine last year, if the Bucs can get him on a decent deal then they should bring him back to see if he can improve – but the fact is the overwhelming vast majority of players who are busts, and then have a career year normally end up reverting back to what they were – and almost none of them improve. That is why Baker’s market is way more limited than most people seem to think – but then it only takes one other team to drive up his value, and if that’s the case, then drive up his price as high as possible and then tell the other team good luck because you’re not paying him like he’s a franchise QB.

  112. IvanT Says:

Marky Mark Says: “What the doubters are missing is Baker is Elite in the playoffs.”

He is career 2-2 in the playoffs. .500 is elite? His pick with the Detroit game on the line is elite? LMAO.

  113. Matt Says:

There is not a GM alive that would take Mayfield over Richardson for 2024, let alone for the rest of their career.

Baker is a low ceiling low floor QB1.

  114. Denny Gay Says:

He had Lamar Jackson as #2. That’s enough for me to disregard.

  115. Rod Munch Says:

Denny Gay – yeah, I know right, 2x NFL MVP… pftt… he stinks — but Baker, now that’s a good QB.

The Baker Bois know what is what.

  116. Jack Clark Says:

@denny gay – Lamar Jackson? The same QB who made it to the AFC Championship game and destroyed the 49ers? Literally the only QB Lamar Jackson lost to was Patrick Mahomes so justify why Lamar Jackson is not only second to Patrick Mahomes

  119. Danfan Says:

The NFL is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league, unless its Baker Mayfield, then its all about what discounting his latest achievements based on his earlier history

  120. Matt Says:

The problem isn’t that Baker stinks. He’s a serviceable QB1.

The problem is the only way you win with okay QB1s (think rank 20th and below) is if you have an elite supporting cast.

Elite supporting casts cost $. Paying a low tier QB1 $40m virtually guarantees you cannot pay a great supporting cast. Bottom tier QB1s can often be found in the draft or in the scrap heap. Last year Minshew and Mayfield fit that bill. They will always be there.

Multiple Mike Evans type players + Sam Howell (or Trask, or Tannehill, or Minshew, or 2023 Baker, or 2022 Geno, etc) or 2024 Baker?

    Seems obvious.

  121. IvanT Says:

    WyomingJoe Says: “Baker’s success”

    8-8. 0 points in game 17. Chase’s 3 field goals gave us the 9-0 win. That’s success?

Detroit playoff game on the line and he throws a pick to secure the loss? That’s success?

Middle of the pack garbage time season stats because he plays catch up against 4th quarter prevent defenses in almost every game. That’s success?
