Bucs Player Survey Delivers Very Mixed Reviews

February 28th, 2024

Joe loves the entertainment value of the annual NFL players union survey of its members on a wide variety of subjects ranging from shower cleanliness to coaching styles, airplane comfort and more.

Players threw a few darts at Team Glazer, in this case Joel Glazer. The survey noted the following: “club owner Joel Glazer receives a rating of 6.1 [out of] 10 from Buccaneer players when considering his willingness to invest in the facilities (29th overall).”

Joe found that funny because the owner with the worst grade, Clark Hunt, commands the two-time defending Super Bowl champs.

Also, the Bucs in recent years built an indoor practice facility (aka The Glazer Shed) and completely overhauled stadium locker rooms. But Joe realizes most Bucs players have only been around the team a few years at most and are — or should be — grading their 2023 experience.

Is Todd Bowles a players’ coach? Apparently not.

Bowles got a “B-” grade and ranked 26th among NFL head coaches.

The survey says, “90% of [Bucs] players feel that head coach Todd Bowles is efficient with their time (18th overall). … The players feel that Todd Bowles is somewhat willing to listen to the locker room (25th overall).”

Tampa Bay got strong marks for everything related to their training staff, strength coaches and workout facilities.

The team nutritionist/dietician earned the following accolade: “88% of players feel like they get an individualized plan (10th overall).”

It seems some players compare the Bucs’ locker room to a Motel 6 on Highway 301 in East Tampa.

The major issue brought up by players is a lack of cleanliness. The players say the locker room is not clean, constantly smelly and has a persistent bug issue in the showers. They also mention that the sauna is dirty and/or moldy, small and constantly breaking down. … The players feel the locker room is old, outdated and needs to be renovated.

Overall the Bucs ranked 22nd in the NFL in locker room happiness.

The alleged bug issues sure sound unacceptable. Joe remembers when the Bucs brought in a Hazmat team to rid the locker room of the MRSA bacteria back in 2013. A quality Orkin man and some Febreze shouldn’t be hard to find.

    What a bunch of hogwash…

A group of millionaires complaining about not getting free baby sitters for all their kids…

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

    GTFO!

  2. TomBucsFan Says:

Signing Tom Brady, which was a common sense move, saved the Glazers image. Before TB12 they were mediocre owners and still are.

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Cry babies, they need to man up. I think smelly, moldy and constantly breaking down would be apt terms for the players based on some of the games we saw last season from this team.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

Agreed Marine Buc. Millionaires complaining about Billionaires. IDGAS!

  5. Idroolpewter&red Says:

Bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch! ….Oh! You thought I was talking about the players? I was referring more to the fans than the players. It might seem trivial to some of you, but I’m sure some of the players concerns go into their decision-making about whether or not to sign, or re-sign, with teams.

  6. RagingBrisket Says:

Some embarrassing insights. Didn’t expect any of that

  7. Anon Says:

I’ll side with millionaire labor over billionaire trust fund kids every day of the week. Bring on the complimentary babysitters.

  8. Mort Says:

Janitorial and maintenance staff in SHAMBLES right now.

Also don’t nickel and dime your players with childcare and hotel rooms. Jesus.

  9. JimBobBuc Says:

As a fan I don’t have access to the facilities or Bowls. In this case does perception equal reality?

The bleacherrReport stated “NFLPA Survey: Bucs Charged Players $1,750 to Not Have Roommates on Road Trips”

NBC Miami reported some detailed grades for each team that are interesting.

Joe said the Glazers have invested money in facilities, let’s see how they react to this report…

  10. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

So that’s what made Erin Andrews cry. And people blamed Sapp.

    Toilet Bowles sh_t 🏠 Bwahwahwahwah!!!!!!!!

  12. mike n Says:

Lack of clean???? Did they not learn anything from mrsa outbreak? That’s unacceptable!

  13. Rusty Shackleford Says:

The Nose Tribe is notoriously cheap.

  14. BridleOaksBuc Says:

Haven’t the Glazers charted private jets to fly the players, and their wives, and their children, and their pets(!) and then put the whole shabang up in nice hotels to get them out of town for incoming hurricanes?!!
But yeah, owners get an “F” GTFOH!!!

  15. mike n Says:

I have 3 ex nfl players as clients and its a little crazy how they think in terms of money. You charge them $50 for a meal and they are outraged and refused to pay but they have no problem dropping six figures on a car or 60 grand on a 4 day vacation. I have one that will not step foot in Titan stadium where he played because they wanted him to pay a few hundred dollars for seats in the suites and of course that should always be free

  16. Frank Pillow Says:

Big program college players are used to primo facilities and being hyper-pampered. It doesn’t shock me that many NFL facilities are not up to snuff. The new OBP opened under Gruden. That was a looooong time ago, I’m terms of state of the art. That being said, gotta keep the place clean and equipment functional.

  17. Boss Says:

never had a boss that was likeable and worth a damn. learned the most from those I disliked…..one was only 2 years..the other was 10 years, but we had a great group of people and were killing it.

nice bosses won;t tell you what they really think.

  18. Jason Says:

You want a clean locker room? CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!!!!
    Just saying.

  19. SlyPirate Says:

    THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM!!!!

All fun and games until someone dies. A Bucs players caught MERSA from the unclean facilities. Dude was on the strongest meds for over a month and almost died!

When a player is deciding between the Cowboys and Bucs, who are going to take? I’m going to the sweet facility.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

No one should be surprised by Todd Bowels’ score.

18-19 with the Bucs and a loser before that with the Jets. A guy who gave Tom Brady his first ever losing season. A guy who managed to coach the star right out of Devin White, Carlton Davis, and Jamel Dean. A guy who has overseen the worst running game in NFL history over a two year span.

At least he is lousy at efficient use of timeouts and game management. The way the defense gives it up in the 4th quarter like a 3 o’clock hooker is impressive though. And his zone bust coverage schemes and telegraphed blitz packages are legendary.

  21. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Baby shizzz soft grown millionaires whining

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Who gives a $hit what these $onsofbiaches think….F ’em….they are getting paid millions……hire their own maids for the locker room.

Find it interesting that coach Bowles ranked worse of all categories…..

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    TomBucsFan Says
“Signing Tom Brady, which was a common sense move, saved the Glazers image. Before TB12 they were mediocre owners and still are.”

    That is a total crock.

And I’m guessing the issues will be addressed this off season. You’ll probably see reports by next week.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jeffs grandpa Says
“Baby shizzz soft grown millionaires whining”

MRSA is no laughing matter. This is a health issue, and they should complain.

Black mold is a huge health issue too, and not that this is out there, the Bucs have no choices but to address it according to inspection standards.

Florida is known for bugs, but they can be gotten rid of. It just takes deep cleaning and cleaner habits.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“82% of players feel like the locker room is big enough (20th overall)”

    82% actually isn’t bad.

You must’ve loved the Lost Decade and the losing. Pat yourself on the back.

  27. Weston Says:

You guys talking about crybabies are insane. This sort of stuff ACTUALLY impacts culture, and is a huge turnoff to free agents. You dont think it matters?!?! Embarrassing AF that cleanliness should ever be a concern for an organization that pays millions to almost every employee using the locker room. In our smaller market, we need a leg up, not some BS that is EASLY TAKEN CARE OF by billionaires. It makes our team and town look like a damn joke. I’ve left companies that had even slightly substandard amenities for employees. I’d be out in an instant if the place was dirty. Yuck. Get it fixed Bucs!!!

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As I look at the grades, I notice that even 20th can have high percentages of satisfaction.

    for example:
93% of players feel like they get an individualized plan (16th overall)

93% is right in the middle. That’s pretty misleading when stating only the placement.

  29. HC Grover Says:

Sounds about right for a Bowles led system.

  30. Jack Clark Says:

Just because NFL owners are billionaires does not mean they should not treat their millionaire employees with common decency, such as providing them clean, functional facilities that do not smell like 💩 . Funny how you bozos blame the millionaires instead of blaming the billionaires for being cheapskates. If they treat millionaires like horse crap how do you think they treat you? And 90% is an A grade where I got my masters of science degree from, so funny how Todd Bowles can get a 90% rating and still be ranked 26th. That’s why proper context matters when people use numbers to represent reality.

  31. HC Grover Says:

Maybe hire a janitor or draft one….What a dump.

  32. Biff Barker Says:

Cant make everybody happy. You have to accept some people only happy when complaining. Ignore them.

  33. dbbuc711 Says:

I’m a bit surprised that with the amount of time that Joe spends there he hasn’t reported on these terrible conditions

  34. DoooshLaRue Says:

I think Frank Pillow nailed it.
The big schools pamper the boys.
    ___________

Tampa Bay got strong marks for everything related to their training staff, strength coaches and workout facilities.

I read that as the trainers take it very easy on them and that’s a big reason why we seem to have more than our share of injuries, or in ME’s case, constantly “tweaked” hamstring injuries.

Code of course for “ I don’t feel like practicing”

  35. BakerFan Says:

I would ask how many of the people on this board would take showers with bugs and be in a locker room that smelled of feces, but probably would be shocked by how many would say they wouldn’t mind.

    Weston Says:

You guys talking about crybabies are insane.
    …….

Spot on…. how any team owner would allow filthiness to be part of their reputation is beyond me.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

The stadium was built in 1997. They’d one halfa–ed renovations, but the Glazers aren’t going to put huge money into a stadium they’re going to say is obsolete in a couple of years as they demand a new stadium.

Honestly, having gone to RayJay since it opened, the Glazers have a point, the stadium is starting to show its age, no matter how many LEDs they strap to the side of it.

Normally I’d say just build something new, but with the job the Lightning have done with the Ice Palace, they show that you might get away with a major renovation and not a full rebuild. The fact the Ice Palace now is the same place built in 1996 is amazing – it feels like a new modern building. Meanwhile, RayJay, with the middling renovations feels like a 90s stadium that has been tweaked with some middlingly upgrades to buy it a few more years.

  38. DoooshLaRue Says:

I know a lot of brothers that severely overreact to any type of perceived filth.
They also tend to wear a lot of cologne and use way too many car air fresheners. Not sure what causes that type of behavior but it’s not normal.
    For example,
A single sewer gnat could be what some consider an infestation.

  39. Tucker Says:

The cleaner you leave it the cleaner you find it.

  40. Marine Buc Says:

The facilities should absolutely be clean – especially after the MRSA outbreak that occurred and affected several players.

However some of these complaints like wanting free daycare and more space on planes and hotels are completely ridiculous.

Pampered millionaires complaining about cheap billionaires… It seems a little silly and pedantic.

  41. unbelievable Says:

So they learned nothing from the MRSA fiasco, huh?

    😑

  42. Lord Cornelius Says:

Hopefully Glazers take notice. You don’t want to be ranked low in something like this

  43. geno711 Says:

Category Grade Rank out of 32
    Treatment of Families F 28th
    Food/Cafeteria C- 24th
    Nutritionist/Dietician B 17th
    Locker Room C- 22nd
    Training Room B- 15th
    Training Staff B 14th
    Weight Room B 17th
    Strength Coaches A- 11th
    Team Travel F 32nd
    Head Coach B- 26th
    Ownership D- 29th

  44. heyjude Says:

Comparable to Motel 6 cracked me up! The Bucs deserve a clean locker room. How hard can that be to get done? At least give them that. it’s not asking for much. It’s safety and health.

I agree with the family room. There are only 12 teams that don’t provide a family room during games. They provide daycare but it cost $90 a child. Most teams will give this for free. if most teams can do it for free, others should be able to do so. They deserve better team travel too.

  45. Stanglassman Says:

The owners just completely resoded the entire practice field. Multimillion dollar project.
Can you imagine any of these guys at the old one Bucs place on westshore? No AC weight room practicing in clouds of jet fumes. 3 a days, carrying their own mattresses into the UT dorm room 2 weeks.

  46. SlyPirate Says:

    TRUELY EMBARASSING
IDK if y’all remember, but last season the Bucs’ facilities were rated as disgusting. The food was rated as terrible, too. I’d be embarrassed as hell if I managed the facilities.

  47. DoooshLaRue Says:

Everyone needs to remember, these are union employees.

Where else would employees who make a MINIMUM of $750,000 a year complain about no free daycare.

    It’s laughable.

  48. HC Grover Says:

This is disgusting. You can not put lipstick on this pig. No excuse. This is on Bowles and Lict.

  49. BakerBucs Says:

Am I missing something or aren’t these players making millions yearly now the owner needs to pay their babysitting apparatus what’s next birth control how bout these spoiled over paid players go ahead get the in laws to baby sit & maybe the cleaning xo that is contracted & paid to keep these facilities clean I’m sure the glazers has aco.on the payroll group people

  50. BakerBucs Says:

If I am making let’s say 10 mill a year & I didn’t like the condition of my shower stall I use & abuse I wud go ahead & hire a co to come in 4 times a week to tidy & disinfect I bet it might cost a 1000.00 a month on 10 mill salary u can afford that

  51. Lakeland Steve Says:

Things haven’t changed. I think every year the Bucs organization gets bad grades. Whether you think the players are a bunch of crybabies or not is irrelevant. Stuff like that can keep free agents for coming here. The Glazers should spend some of there money on a new locker room, shower facilities and make those things the best in the league. Considering the prices they charge to go to a Bucs game they got plenty of cash to fix those things up.

  52. Capt.Tim Says:

Im risking my health and my mental facilities- to make you rich.
Im almost certain to have destroyed my knees. Suffered brain bruising concussions. Chronic Neck and Back problems are guaranteed.

Yes I get paid millions. But Ill spend the rest of my life earning them. Hoping my brain issues dont cause the onset of demensia.

So yeah, If im selling my future health- I want a clean place to change, a nice shower area. Ans equipment that works.

You wont get that, unless someone has paid you to get hurt, or hurt people.
A clean, bug free shower is to ask!

  53. Capt.Tim Says:

    Is not much to ask*
    Damn concussions! Lol

  54. Rod Munch Says:

You drama queens need to keep in mind this isn’t compared to a Motel 6, it’s compared to other teams owned by billionaires.

It’s still in the top 2% of facilities in the world, so cut out the malarky comments.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

The Chiefs were overall 31st on the list.

So maybe these cupcakes perform better if they’re pampered like a bunch of prima donnas.

Keep it up Glazers, and go win the third SB of your ownership reign.

  56. Let em bake Says:

Imagine being in the home when rod first learned to speak…”mama”…”dada”…. ”middling”….😊

  57. Rod Munch Says:

Let em bake – Man, I know you Baker Bois are dullards, but man, ooof. The fact you thought that’s a witty comment you needed to share.

    Very embarrassing.

  58. adam from ny Says:

so the bucs are on some ymca sheet ?

just draft that o-lineman mitch orkinfuss out of ohio state…

    i hear he’s a bugged out dude

  59. adam from ny Says:

last year i think the top rated team in cleanliness drafted that lineman william molden out of georgia…

and there showers have no more gobbly gook in them

  60. SoCalBucFanSince79 Says:

Just because a player can blow a million dollars at the strip club on their rookie contract, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t expect a well-maintained workplace. Then again could be worse. In 2023 (the first year of this NFLPA survey) the Cardinals charge their players for in-facility dinners (so I guess controlling proper nutrition doesn’t matter, when proper body maintenance keeps them healthy and paid?) and the Jaguars had a rat infestation in the locker room (health/safety), or being like one of eight teams that didn’t offer first-class legroom in team flights like the Eagles (comfort in travel, proper healing environment). Freakonomics did a podcast on this very subject: “When Is a Superstar Just Another Employee?” regarding the landscape of the workplace environment in the NFL. It might shed a better light on what the survey reveals about the owners and the players they employ. The team facilities are the players office, so you would think owners wouldn’t nickel and dime on this aspect of player satisfaction. But of course there’s a minority of you that just want the meat sacks to talk less (or never), rub dirt on wounds and play until they can’t remember their own names, so long as they wear our jersey. Unless you hate your offspring, why would you not want a protected environment (Family Room) to keep the drunk riff-raff from harassing your significant others, elderly parents and your young toddlers? It would be like working for a high-end commercial bank or well-healed hedge fund and having your kids being babysat in Gen Pop of a federal penitentiary.

Its crazy how big the empathy gap is for “our” players just because they get paid like kings for a few fleeting years, but many end up in far worse shape after the game leaves them. I wonder how any of us would feel, if our employers charged us for toilet paper or soap n hot water or air conditioning or part of the janitorial bill or elevator inspection? Since “we” can afford it, should we pay for basic necessities of our workplaces too? Should “we” install our own bidets at work with our thousandaire/hundredaire lifestyle of the broke AF fan demo? Fair is fair right? Let’s go back to work environment exposed in Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle”, cuz real men don’t complain of unsafe, unsanitary work conditions, taking for granted the labor protections we have now.

Remember this headline, “Former Super Bowl-winning kicker Lawrence Tynes is suing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $20 million after contracting a MRSA infection in a toe on his kicking foot that prematurely ended his career, his lawyer said Tuesday.” Using some people’s logic Tynes should have just paid for his own microbiologist, clinical pathologist, dermatologist, orthopedic surgeon and clinical reference lab to confirm the Bucs gave him MRSA and your kicking foot is no bueno, is a far cry to paying the janitors to splash a lil bleach to freshen up the place. He should have sponsored his own massive double-blind phase I/II/III/IV clinical trials to get FDA approval decades later for an unproven antibiotic that won’t save his kicking career today, since that is what players of his economic class should do cuz that is what the owners and some fans want, because he got paid. The stupidity of some “fans” is just breathtaking. Then again the Joes aren’t aiming for an audience impressed by Peabodys or Pulitzers either.

  61. Chris l Says:

Forget febreze. Can we not get Florida’s elite restoration in there to do a free assessment?

  62. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Guys, this is a survey. These players aren’t complaining. They are given a survey and voiced their opinions. This doesn’t make them spoiled. Have you heard one Buccaneer player complain? No you haven’t. Nobody is asking for sympathy from the fans, so I’m really confused as to why so many of you have your panties in a wad.

In addition, the NFL is a multi-billion dollar industry. Having clean facilities really isn’t that much of an ask. If you were working for a multi-billion dollar company, wouldn’t you expect (and want) a clean bathroom? If you know you are making tons of money from your company, wouldn’t you want to not have roaches at your desk? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

  63. Dave Pear Says:

The facility comments are grain of salt stuff. Like was said, this is an elite facility, being compared to other elite facilities.

Fund a hag at the Miss Universe pageant. Get the point.

The real turd in the woodpile was the unsurprising fact that Slowles was rated 26th of the head coaches.

JL needs to wrap that into the Performance Review amid setting improvement expectations for 2014.

  64. Dave Pear Says:

    *Find a hag….

  65. Rod Munch Says:

I know, Pear, these people are acting like the building and facilities are a slum – they’re just not as nice as other stadiums that have been built in the last 25-years is all – it doesn’t mean it’s a dump.

But this will all get fixed as the Glazers will start talking about wanting a new stadium anytime now. Their current lease is up in 2027 if my math is correct. I’d assume they’re already talking to the TSA about it behind the scenes and wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t hear something about a new stadium or a major renovation this summer as they normally do things 3-years out.

  66. heyjude Says:

Many of us have similar surveys that we fill out in our own workplaces. Reviewing the Bucs survey, there are many problems that have been ongoing. Team travel, food, facilities-locker room, game day family room, … Not much to ask for better.

I agree with Capt. Tim’s earlier comment. The players are risking so much to play: concussions, CTE, long term injuries, etc. The millions they make will be needed later on for their healthcare out of pocket.

  67. BuxfaninTX Says:

Bugs in the shower… charging $90 per kid on game days… past MRSA issues… for shame

  68. Buddy Says:

Ive told the website for MANY MANY MANY years that things are what they appear at One Buc place in regards to TEAM GLAZER. After working in that current building and the one before it, they are prob the worst group of owners in all of sports. Being “cheap” is a common comment regarding a certain type of people and TEAM GLAZER is exactly that.

  69. EternalSon Says:

Get Clayton in there he’ll clean it up!

  70. ModHairKen Says:

    This is embarrassing and disgusting:

“The major issue brought up by players is a lack of cleanliness. The players say the locker room is not clean, constantly smelly and has a persistent bug issue in the showers. They also mention that the sauna is dirty and/or moldy, small and constantly breaking down. … The players feel the locker room is old, outdated and needs to be renovated.”

    Glazers. Seriously? Come on.

  71. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs got a B’s and C’s in most categories. Thats good enough. These guys fly and eat free. The rooks got a roommate on out of town games. Players get quite a few amenities here and there. Quite a few of these guys are millionaires and live like Kings. Not concerned about this survey. Win another Superbowl.

  72. Dave Pear Says:

    Zzzzzzz……

The head coach is ranked 26th.

    Duh.
