Offensive Line Coaches Leaving For Carolina Was “A Good Decision,” Says Todd Bowles.

February 27th, 2024

Former Bucs offensive line coach Joe Gilbert.

Thought-provoking revelation today from Todd Bowles.

No, it didn’t come during his thrilling appearance on The Ira Kaufman Podcast

Joe asked Bowles at the NFL Scouting Combine about moving on from co-offensive line coaches Joe Gilbert and Harold Goodwin, who doubled as Bowles’ assistant head coach.

The duo, a tandem in Tampa for the past five seasons, now works for the Panthers under new head coach Dave Canales, the Bucs’ playcaller last season.

Bowles explained it was a good move for all involved.

“Their contracts ended,” Bowles began. “They had a good relationship with Dave. They had contracts offered [by the Bucs], but they wanted to keep their continuity together with Dave, so they went to Carolina. And I’m good with that because when you get a new offensive coordinator, you want him to be comfortable with the guys that he has around him, so it was a good decision.”

It sounds to Joe like Gilbert and Goodwin will earn more from the Panthers than they would have in Tampa. Possibly, they thought they’d have more job security there. That’s unclear.

What is clear is that Bowles wasn’t super attached to Goodwin and Gilbert.

Regardless, Bowles is right. New offensive coordinator Liam Coen should have some of his own handpicked guys alongside him.

  1. Dave Pear Says:

Given the performance of the OL, a fresh start with new coaches certainly shouldn’t make the worst running game in history any worse.

  2. Buc4evr Says:

Joe Gilbert and Harold Godwin showed what they had last year and it wasn’t much. Happy they are going to Carolina with Canales. lol. Time to start over.

  3. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Todd needs to learn the finer points of PR. No need to mention the Bucs had offers extended and the OL coaches essentially turned it down. I hope Licht finally drafts some true big-bodied maulers on the interior o-line to get this running game ignited.

  4. Jack Clark Says:

More job security?? Did they not see what happened to the last head coach of the stinking Panthers? And what about the one before that?

  5. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Glad they moved on.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

What’s missing from that statement is something like “They were great coaches and we would have liked it if they stayed…”

Instead Todd says it was a “good decision” that they decided to leave…

    Hmm – that’s telling

  7. Dave Pear Says:

As the head coach, Todd is accountable for the coaches on his staff, although he likes to cast blame elsewhere instead of owning it when defects emerge.

  8. Statguy Says:

Bowles has slowly been putting his own stamp on this team from what he inherited

  9. adam from ny Says:

if the bucs have a very good season in 2024, someone has to do an

  10. SlyPirate Says:

    SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING …

The brilliant masterminds of the 31st Ranked Rushing Attack and 19th Ranked Offense remain in the NFCS and we get to face them 2x!

  11. kgh4life Says:

    @Hearty Dikerson

Do you work in PR? How do you know what Todd Bowles should say or not say?

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Todd needs to learn the basic tenets of coaching. Concocting complex schemes that no one but Todd understands, and then observing the same failures over and over and over and over and over again, without implementing corrective action, is indicting for a head coach with a losing record for two different teams.

    Real estate? Yes.

    NFL?

    No.

  13. garro Says:

Hmm My BS meter is red lined.

Todd is a known fibber. Diva is my best player…

    Go Bucs!

  14. PanthersSuck! Says:

Last place I would feel secure as a coach is with the charlotte panthers.

  15. Allbuccedup Says:

Bowles is only attached to Bowles he is a bad backstabbing head coach. Look at all the coaches fleeing the ship the last two years no one wants to work for him. Leaving on their own or being fired. All this talk of keeping the band together doesn’t apply to the coaching staff. Stability in the organization and staff is important for a successful team. I hope this is not a sign of things to come.

  16. Pewter Power Says:

Had to end at some point. They weren’t helping whatsoever

  17. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Well my input here might not be liked but I’ve said things like this before. A whole new offensive coaching staff should be a good thing. Get rid of what really wasn’t all that good. How many times did you see Brady look a little discussed when we were in a pinch and was like are you for real. Let’s throw the old playbook in the trash..

  18. DJB Says:

Bowles said the offensive coordinator needs to be comfortable with the guys around him, so why did the Bucs offer them contracts?

  19. BakerBucs Says:

Dave pear says typical post from the most gifted knucklehead on this site lest we remember bowles was here as coach for SB & has been here for 3 divisional titles so obviously the guy is doing something rite u r post are something wrong

  20. BakerBucs Says:

Sometimes when u have a losing record doesn’t actually tell all the facts look at m.trubinsky he had a winning record as a NFL starting QB where bakers record is not but let’s face it baker is a way better qb no joke so think before u post

  21. BakerBucs Says:

Bowles said he thinks that them leaving was good all the way around sometimes it’s better to say something positive instead of constant neg.like this posting site
