Baker Mayfield No. 11

February 16th, 2024

Lofty ranking.

So the Bucs have a borderline top-10 quarterback who led the team within a timeout and a play from overtime to reach the NFC title game, yet the loud crowd pines for a guy who in three years has nine pass attempts.

What is Joe missing?

Nick Shook of NFL.com decided to rank all starting quarterbacks as Joe begins to mentally struggle with the thought of no real NFL football for seven months.

(Thank goodness for NFL+ and YouTubeTV DVR. Joe has decided that once the Final Four ends, Joe will watch no less than two college games and two NFL games each weekend that he otherwise missed in the 2023 season. That should help Joe get over the hump.)

In this quarterbacks ranking, he has pending Bucs free agent Baker Mayfield ranked No. 11.

Acknowledge this reality for me, won’t you: Dave Canales is now the Carolina Panthers head coach because of what he accomplished with Mayfield (and Russell Wilson, and Geno Smith) in 2023. Mayfield arrived in Tampa as a reclamation project with a low ceiling and an even lower salary, posted a career year worthy of a Pro Bowl trip, and is now in line to multiply his 2023 annual pay exponentially. That’s a product of a perfect pairing between coordinator and quarterback, and Mayfield’s undying determination to prove the doubters wrong. After digesting a healthy portion of humble pie, Mayfield resurrected his career by staying true to himself and capitalizing on an opportunity, leading the Buccaneers to a playoff win and reestablishing an optimistic future after things had grown rather dim. That – plus his first 4,000-yard season – is worth celebrating.

That last sentence by Shook is why Joe thinks Mayfield may regress this year. He hit a career-high. Rarely do veteran quarterbacks have a career season and follow that up with an even better season.

You know, regress to the mean as the stat geeks like to say?

Hey, if Mayfield regresses only a little, no big deal. And if he improves and has another career year under new offensive coordinator Liam Coen, then the Bucs may have had an even better bargain on their hands.

  1. J Says:

Let Baker and Evans roam free in greener pastures, they deserve it. Grab Penix and McMillan.

  2. BillyBucco Says:

I just can’t digest paying Baker and Mike.
Think what we can add by having an extra 60 million in cap space.
Go get Penix and maybe even McMillan in the 3rd and move on.
Build the trenches and let’s play football.
Of all the times to bite the bullet and reset, doing after 3 straight good drafts helps.
    Turn the page.
    Go Bucs

  3. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    pay the man!

  4. unbelievable Says:

    “Grab Penix”

Yeah, cuz it’s that easy… And obviously a coach who was on the hot seat all last year wants to start over completely with a rookie QB, and also lose his most productive offensive weapon who happens to own basically every franchise receiving record.

Okay, now let me take off my sarcasm font…

  5. BillyBucco Says:

    Good teams don’t overpay PERIOD.
I don’t give a flying F what he has DONE.
What are they gonna do next year.?
Enjoy your sarcasm font and Baker themed lotion big guy!!!!

  6. Dave Pear Says:

    Penix < Levis

Both are <<< Baker. I’m glad a real professional who spends 90 hours a week on this and other personnel issues is reaching out to you Peniuxes for your guidance.

    Thank you Jason Licht

  7. Gipper Says:

Looked at the Shook data and as usual there is a subjective bias built into his rankings. Mayfield had a better season statistically than Matthew Stafford who is ranked #5. Just looking at the raw Shook data per player, it is obvious that Mayfield had the better season. The one exception is that Stafford had 0 fumbles versus 8 for Mayfield. That stat is fumbles only, not fumbles that resulted in a turnover. Pretty sure that not all of Mayfield’s fumbles resulted in a change of possession.

  8. JD Still Says:

What was the dig on Mayfield that had him on four different teams in just two years, he fumbles a lot and throws a lot of interceptions, so when it got down to the last two minutes of the game and the Bucs had a chance to win with plenty of time remaining, what did Mayfield do? He reverted to form and threw an interception., his second of the game, but we’ll probably keep him and give him a big money contract because , “ he’s a dude!”. Inspite of his sub .500 win percentage , but that’s ok because we have had a long history of having SuperBowl winning quarterbacks , Steve Young was a Super Bowl winning quarterback, leagueMVP, Hall of Fame quarterback , then there was Doug Williams SuperBowl Winning , history making Qb , and then there was Trent Dilfer , another SuperBowl Winning QB, the only problem ? They were declared “busts “ here and had to go on to other teams to get a chance to show their worth, so keep Mayfield , give him his one hundred million dollar three year reward for mediocrity, and let Kyle Trask Walk , without giving him a chance , with history on his side Kyle and some other team will probably end up thanking us.

  9. SB Says:

LOL UB passing sardonic wisdom 🙂

  10. MadMax Says:

    3 years, 33.33 mill

No to Penix….too injury prone plus he’s left handed and we’ll need to move Wirfs back to RT to protect his blindside. Just no.

  11. SB Says:

Also I love Penix. Don’t love his injury history.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

You’re embarrassing yourself Joe with the way you push your agenda. The Bucs were NOT ‘within a timeout and a play from overtime to reach the NFC title game’. But they WERE within ONE INTERCEPTION by Baker Mayfield at 1:39 left in the 4th quarter of being able to MAYBE put together a drive that MIGHT have allowed them to score a TD and MAYBE tack on the 2-point conversion to tie the score and POSSIBLY win it in overtime. MAYBE.

That interception as you well know gave the Lions the ball at the Bucs’ 28-yard line with 1:33 to play. Had Dan Campbell chosen to, he MIGHT have run the ball 3 times instead of taking kneeldowns, gotten into better FG position and tacked on 3 more points with seconds left … leaving the Bucs trailing by 11 points. Game out of reach.

Yup for sure, we really are smack dab in the middle of silly season right now. There are TONS of plausible WHAT IFs that can be replayed for various games during the season. Keeping this particular WHAT IF alive appears to me to be a veiled attempt to make Todd Bowles look like a loser coach. Actually not so veiled now that I think about it. I suppose that’s just reflective of our times in general though, where folks who never have to make time-sensitive decisions can deride those in positions of responsibility who have to constantly make those kinds of decisions.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

BTW, in other news, yesterday the Bears released offensive lineman Cody Whitehair and safety Eddie Jackson. Both players seem to be worth a look-see since we need upgrades at both positions.

  14. CleanHouse Says:

Hey Defense Rules three things in your post are correct.

    1. There were a lot of mights and maybes involved in a possible comeback.

    2. Baker’s interception was terrible..

    3. Todd Bowles is a loser head coach. (I realize you don’t believe this)

No need to veil my opinions

The team is grasping at maintaining a losing formula with a ceiling on success.

  15. Farmer Says:

Sure, veteran QBs rarely follow up a career season with another career season however how many of those veteran QBs set the career season stats on their first year with a new team and who’s old teams had 0 stability so it was like being on a new team every year.

Baker is a complete outlier when it comes to NFL QBs, nobody has ever had 8 HCs in 6 years other than Baker, nobody has had the instability that Baker has had, the only time in Bakers career that he had the same HC two years in a row he ended up getting injured in week two but through those 2 games (admittedly very small sample size) he was the most accurate QB in the league.

I have followed Bakers career closely, 4000 yards and 28TDs is not representative of his ceiling, it’s possible that 8-10INTs is his ceiling and he will always have a somewhat sizeable INT number due to his play style but if Baker re-signs with the Bucs I will be putting a chunk of money on him eclipsing 2023s stats.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

What Mayfield did last year, he accomplished with a bad football team.
A team with no , absoutely no Running game.

We were a one dimensional offense. And that one dimension was Baker Mayfield throwing the ball

A horrible offensive line. A backup guard, center. A rookie Guard, and two Tackles both playing new NFL positions.

No production out of the TE position. Otton, Keift, and Payne didnt strike fear in any defense

    No pass rush

    A terrible secondary

    Its miraculous what Mayfield accomplished.

Imagine what He can accomplish with a good runnuping game and offensive line.
    And meybe a good TE.

Or if he can keep the same offensive coordinator for a couple years in a row

  17. Clwilljr Says:

In my opinion if Baker wants to much money let him walk with the skill players have you put any qb with talent they will produce they have to resign Mike the next qb should be mobile that would help with the rushing stats

  18. Realistmcr Says:

Baker Mayfield has not peaked yet and many will be shocked.

  19. heyjude Says:

Keep Mayfield. I love Penix and agree with SB, a lot of past injuries. He also did play baseball and track. Bruce Arians likes him. And Penix probably would want to come here since it’s close to his family. Baker is still our guy. Along with Evans and others too.

  20. Formerbrownsfan Says:

What is with everyone harping about his interception? The last 2 seasons Josh Allen has 32 int, Mahomes 26 and 14 other QBs with more interceptions than Baker. The difference is they were drafted by teams that were already playoff contenders. I mean getting drafted by the Cleveland Clowns is the worst that could happen to any player. The were really bad before him and honestly the Clowns are the Clowns!

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So, I’m for re-signing Baker…I just don’t want to cripple the team to do it…and i do believe he earned a bigger paycheck.

That said…what he did in 2023 was NOT that great. Certainly not as great as this Joe claims. The stats are right, sure. But those presented here are limited.

    I’ll say this:

Winston had some 4000+ seasons too…and he wasn’t great.

On the surface, 8 fumbles is a lot…but maybe 2 at most were his fault.

Don’t claim he had no running game…our starting rb was just short of 1000 yards. Running wasn’t great, but it was good enough.

Half of the season, he looked horrible. He started okay, the it all went away fore a bunch of games…then he finished strong. That alone says he isn’t great…yet.

He proved he has the potential to be great…and that’s all he proved.

If he is going to regress, he should not be paid as much…because he SHOULD be improving, not regressing.

His career year? The bar was low to begin with.

So enough with this regressing talk. He earned a year to prove he can get better, not worse. The team should be better as a whole.

This regressing talk is exactly why some of us do not want to over commit. Sign hi, or franchise him…but do it safely just in case.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Capt.Tim, I thought Otton started looking better out there

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

Bonzi, toward the end of the season, he looked better.
    Still not good

  24. Farmer Says:

    @Buccaner Bonzai

Rachaad White was 36th in yards per attempt (RBs only, minimum of 9 games played), he had the 3rd most rushing attempts yet had the 14th most yards. The running game continuously put the offence on 3rd and long after two short yardage downs which translates to Baker having the highest 3rd down passing attempts in the league and the 3rd most yardage gained on 3rd down behind Tua and Dak.

The Bucs has the lowest rushing yards per attempt in the entire league so don’t go lying about the running game being “good enough”, it completely crippled the offence by sticking with something that wasn’t working.

  25. bob in valrico Says:

Rich Gannon and Kurt Warner are two veteran QB’s that got better with age.
You know what you have Baker. He has shown he is resilient, avoids sacks and
did an excellent job of getting Evans involved in the offense.

  26. Trask To The Future Says:

$50M A YEAR for Mr. “Rarely Ever Throws For 100 Yards In The First Half” Mayfield!

  27. ExBrownsFan Says:

All the guessing about QB is just that guessing. The run game and defense have to improve substantially that is fact, No matter who plays QB. Oh and for the record, I agree with 3 @ 33.3 basically 100 guaranteed. Just spread it out over years so you have cap space, if you want to try and win now. If you want to rebuild then sure take a chance in the draft now for those lower contract numbers over time. But you might as well get a new coach too if you go that route and I think that ship has sailed.

  28. Gipper Says:

    Formerbrowns,

They are harping about an interception because it is the one thing left to validate a season of talking down Mayfield on these pages. The hate crew got Mayfield wrong all season. Most of these guys need to be right-once, anytime, ion lifetimes of not being taken seriously. Really doubt that any of these guys actually played football or sports in general. You can tell easily because people who have competed are respectful of opponents and fellow competitors.

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

No one in the NFL will pay Mayfield 30 mil a year but the BUCS. The most he will get offered is 15 to 20 mil from another team. You don’t open up the checkbook for one good year after a lot of mediocre years.

  30. optimisticbucsfan Says:

@ bonzai – DEAD LAST IN THE NFL IN RUNNING THE BALL.

DEAD LAST – 2 straight years.

Either get your facts right or your stupid opinions off of here.

    ^^^^^^^^^^
Geno Smith got a big deal after 1 good year with Seattle. Mike Glennon got a big deal (at the time) from the Bears and I don’t remember him EVER having a good year.

  32. Bucswin? Says:

Mayfield 5000+ yards in 2024.. Called it.. GO BUCS!

  33. ExBrownsFan Says:

Also Shook has Mahommes at 3 with Jackson and Allen @ 1&2….. So take his rating system for what it is, More guesswork.

  34. Ethan Says:

JBF: “Hey, if Mayfield regresses only a little, no big deal.”

True. 8-9 is not much worse than 9-8.

  35. Ethan Says:

JBF: “yet the loud crowd pines for a guy who in three years has nine pass attempts”

Isn’t that the guy you said outplayed Mayfield in training camp?

  36. go dawgs Says:

Sorry I dont get the Lamar Jackson thing.. Hes a great run around talent and seems to always choke in the playoffs. Lamar is going to end up being one of those MLB compilers, that make the hall of fame, have crazy stats due to longevity, and never win anything. The fact that Mahomes isnt 1 on every list is ridiculous. He’s the best player in football regardless of meaningless regular season stats.

  37. go dawgs Says:

Ethan, are you still here with your tired backup nonsense. Loser, have fun with your 4 win season this year.

  38. Beeej Says:

Greatest likelihood is Penix will be a bust, as are nearly 2/3 of first round QB’s

  39. Since76 Says:

Look at Mayfield’s last four games as a buc. The last two regular season games and two playoff games. Those four games pretty much mirror the season. The last two games Of the regular season Mayfield outright sucked. Then he played the imploding eagles and looked really good. It was the eagles 6th or 7th loss in a row? Then the lions game throws a pick early and then ends the bucs season with a pick at the end. No Mayfield is definitely not an answer at the QB position. If you have Moxie you don’t mess the bed 3 out 4 games when everything’s on the line. Moxiemy@$$………

  40. 727BUC Says:

Buccaneer bonzai says: “Don’t claim he had no running game…our starting rb just shy of 1000 yds…..” ……….

…..ok. well as a team we had 1509 yds rushing which was good enough for 32nd best in the league. Aka. Dead last. Guess you see it differently.

  41. BillyBucco Says:

Using that logic though Mahomes COULD have been a bust.
And using Geno Smith or Daniel Jones as a bar simply tells the story that those were BAD contracts.
Im not a Baker HATER i just know what a 35 million a year QB looks like and he aint it.
Teams try to add pieces to get over the hump and if we resign Baker and Mike the only added pieces will be rookies.
Do we really wanna run it back with the same team and same results?
There is an obvious division amongst fans, yes, but resorting to name calling and sarcasm is juvenile.
You can’t talk people into your opinion.
When Baker throws 40 TDs in a season then we can talk about a franchise QB.
You Baker fans WANT him to do well obviously. You WANT him to get paid come hell or high water, but that doesn’t mean it’s the correct choice for THE BUCS.

  42. StormyInFl Says:

“Grab Penix and let your proven starting QB (Mayfield) and your #1 receiver walk”.

Penix is much more likely to bust than succeed. That’s the odds.

Good god, it is stupid season. Some of you must really want a repeat of the “lost decade” and “youngry, pt2”. That or you don’t remember it.

No thanks. Not now, not ever.

Blow it up and rebuild it fails more often than it succeeds. How often has Chicago, Carolina, the Jets, Arizona have done this? Where are they now?

    Reload. Not rebuild.

  43. SB~LV Says:

Folks just like at the restaurant
Market price for his profile is 40 million

  44. Defense Rules Says:

Gipper … ‘They are harping about an interception because it is the one thing left to validate a season of talking down Mayfield on these pages. The hate crew got Mayfield wrong all season.’

The only thing left to validate a season of talking down Mayfield? That’s horsepuckey and you know it. How about showing a little BALANCE when you analyze a player’s season.

Joe presented ONE side of the picture (we were ONE timeout and ONE play away from tying the score) based on a LOT of assumptions. BALANCE says that we were potentially also ONE INTERCEPTION away from tying the score. Joe’s version puts the ball in Bowles’ court. The other version puts the ball in Mayfield’s court. The reality of EVERY GAME is that they’re comprised of a myriad of split second decisions, some of which go right, some of which don’t. Welcome to the real world Gipper … that’s daily life on this planet for all of us.

There’s a difference IMO between Monday Morning Quarterbacking and ANALYSIS. The latter can help you identify and correct problems & issues to better prepare for the future. The former accomplishes very little except point fingers in search of scapegoats based on hypothetical WHAT IFs.

And BTW Gipper, I’m far from being a ‘Baker hater’ or whatever sorry descriptor du jour you seem to enjoy. Analytically, Baker’s shown excellent leadership IMO & I view that as essential in a QB. I happen to be one of those who believe that what’s best for 1 player isn’t always what’s best for the TEAM. And the TEAM ALWAYS COMES FIRST. At his Market Value of $27 mil (a range of $25-$30 mil is acceptable), I’m in favor of the Bucs re-signing him, and have been since the regular season. I’m NOT in favor of overpaying for his talent, because it negatively impacts other priorities that the TEAM (and yes, Baker) will need to address this year to be successful.

  45. Mike Anthony Says:

“That last sentence by Shook is why Joe thinks Mayfield may regress this year.

You know, regress to the mean as the stat geeks like to say?

His mean before being injured or with the Panthrrs who proved again last year they can’t work with QBs? Okay

2018 4500 yards (adjusted for 14 games played as rookie)
2019 4066 yeards (adjsuted for 16 game schedule)
    2020 3785 ( adjsuted for 16 game schedule”

SO his mean not injured and outside of the panthers is 4,098

When Baker throws 40 TDs in a season then we can talk about a franchise QB.
    …..
There have been 14 seasons of 40-plus touchdowns in NFL history and 18 Total times it has been done.
    Russell Wilson (40)
    Aaron Rodgers (3x 40, 45,48)
    Andrew Luck (40)
    Tom Brady (3x 40, 43,50)
    Kurt Warner (41)
    Matthew Stafford (41, 41)
    Patrick Mahomes (41. 50)
    Drew Brees (43, 46)
    Dan Marion (44)
    Peyton Manning (49, 55)

You are setting a pretty high bar and the market has changed as far as QB salary, we will see shortly. I think when a team ranks dead last in Rushing and not for the lack of trying it over and over unsuccessfully that Baker had a pretty good season.

If they don’t sign Baker and Mike Evans, they need to blow it up and go young.

  47. Bojim Says:

Yeah yeah. He’s not worth whatever. Let him walk blah blah blah. Then complain next year if he walks and we suck again. lol

  48. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Never forget Trask almost beat Alabama that one time. Clearly the Glazers are Seminole fans and they just drafted Kyle to keep him on the bench so he couldn’t rewrite the NFL record books . When Kyle gets his shot everyone on planet earth be saying “Patrick Mahomes who?”
The occult of Trask won’t be denied!!!

  49. ATLBUC Says:

Joe says….. yet the loud crowd pines for a guy who in three years has nine pass attempts.
    ————————-
I can’t unsee how well Trask plated in training camp and in preseason games, mostly with second stringers. He outplayed Baker by a mile. His stats were better in every category. So no matter how well Baker does, and I hopes he does well, I will always know that put in the same situation, Trask would do a lot better. And believe it or not, Joe, there was a time in every quarterback career that they had thrown less than nine passes.
Like I said before when Kyle gets on the field Baker = Bledsoe

  50. SB~LV Says:

    Lol 😂
Cracks me up when I read people say he is worth blah blah blah .. less than market price.
If the Bucs pay the market price 40 million plus or minus creative numbers
It will still be a steal when the last year of the contract expires
    The numbers only go up.
I pity the fools that think it’s wise to go kick tires in the draft or in the NFL FA scratch and dent bin
    Lol 😂

  51. Conner50 Says:

I’m not huge on Mayfield I think he’s very inconsistent but he can play very well at times too, the interception against the lions was a killer. That being said I still think he would be the smarter option to resign WITH Evans to bring back to have the most success. The guys that wanna move on from a HOF player and a guy who just turned his career around are not too bright. Penix, Nix, or McCarthy are not gonna get us the nfc south crown or to playoffs as a rookie most likely, especially without Evans who’s been the Bucs offense since being drafted.

  52. Brandon Says:

I’m sorry, compare Mayfield’s first six seasons as a pro to Drew Brees first seven seasons. The statistical similarities and edges for Mayfield are way too uncanny to ignore. Physically, Mayfield is a much better player, a smidge taller, much thicker build, stronger arm, faster… but playing styles are similar. Brees has an edge in accuracy… but to that point in their careers… he didn’t. He didn’t edge <Mayfield out in much of anything.

  53. J Says:

I pity the fools like SBLV who wouldn’t know how to think outside of the box even if they were handed the directions.

  57. Davyboy Says:

Man it would be tough playing for some of you fans commenting on here. All you can do is nit pick the guy to death. He is the major reason you were oh so close to the superbowl in the first place. You can’t even see or chose to ignore the good statistics that got “your” team that close in the first place. Have you forgot everyone had “your” team picked to do nothing and then enters Baker. I can promise you this he is just going to get better. I could go into the why’s he will but it would be wasted on several of you and the others already see the possibilities, so…

  59. D-Rok Says:

    SB~LV,

The market for Mayfield, according to Spotrac, is 27.1mill. Not sure where you derived the number of 40mill.

I’d be OK with Mayfield signing for 25-30mill per year for 2-3 years.

However, a part of me thinks it might be wiser for the Bucs to give Mayfield one more prove-it deal, to ensure he doesn’t regress, but I doubt that will happen since there are so many other QB-needy clubs.

We shall see what happens pretty soon.

    Go Bucs !

  60. BakerBucs Says:

  61. Davyboy Says:

Just a reminder, “your” teams running game ranked 32 out of, how many teams, oh yeah, 32. When was the last time a team lacking that much in either of the big three, defense, passing and running made it that deep? I wonder why you went that deep?

  62. SB~LV Says:

D Rok when his stats / age are compared to other starting QB’s
It was listed somewhere on the www
Ball is in the Bucs court and rolling to the door the longer they play Culverhouse with him.

  63. JustVisiting Says:

Mayfield attempted 566 passes in 2023, which is a really big sample for determining reliable averages, etc. The larger a sample is, the less likely you’re going to see regression (or improvement) to the mean. RttM is mostly relevant in small samples, like when a starting quarterback performs particularly well/poorly in the first couple of games, or a backup looks awesome/terrible, but only threw 15 passes in the season, etc.

  64. BakerBucs Says:

How many years does a QB have to prove it that means every QB wud have to be prime for 2 years then be beyond prime in year 3 then toss h on year 4 Mayfield has already had 3 good seasons in the NFL with such a short life span in the NFL wtf is the sense of taking a chance on getting hurt & never getting the big pay day how many guys has that happened to I think he has paid his dues gave us a gift in 2023 so even if u give him 25 mill this year average it out for 2 seasons he is still only less thank 14 mill per year that is WR pay eu kidding get a life Baker will make that much in endorsements fool

I’m a well known fan Of Baker but 40 Million is too much for the Bucs at this time unless its with incentives met.. The results of too many teams paying a high price without results tells me the market is over priced.

As a Baker fan I would be happry for him to get 40 Million. However as a Buc’s fan I would completely understand the bucs letting him walk if thats the price.

  67. SB~LV Says:

Tony … as a Bucs fan since driving in from Plant City to check out the new team in town and seeing 250 + games as a season ticket holder.
It would not surprise me in the least to see the Bucs let him walk !
It would be typical for the Buccaneers history.
Baker ain’t blinking and holds the strongest hand.
If he is going to learn a new offense with new offensive coaches and play caller why not go to the best fit financially, roster strength and vibe ?

  68. LANshark Says:

Watch the All-22 again fellas… CLEARLY Otten ran the wrong pattern… was 4 yards too deep.. and within 2 yards of Godwin. NO coach designs a pattern like that.

Should Baker have made that throw – no… he believed he could force it in… but put the blame where it belongs.

Okay so show me the teams you think would REALISTICALLY shell out 40 million for Baker considering at least three teams needing a QB are in position to take one in the draft.

Its one thing to talk about price compared to other Qbs contracts but another to talk about who has the cash and would.

  70. Gipper Says:

    Defense rules,

Don’t care what you “don’t overpay for or not.” Never realized that this was your money. Always thought it belonged to the Glazer Family. Read your tortured post and still not sure what you are saying other than “you are not overpaying” for Mayfield’s services. That’s OK with me but in case you may have missed it most professional athletes are paid beyond reason. Mayfield will be looking for the longest, highest guaranteed deal and will get it whether that’s with Tampa or elsewhere. Will check back with you next season too see your astute views on Trask.

  71. Ethan Says:

JBF: “a guy who in three years has 9 pass attempts”

Tom Brady had only 3 pass attempts before going in for the injured Drew Bledsoe. Are you saying Kyle Trask might be another Brady?

  72. SB~LV Says:

    Oh Tony !
I am not reading or putting that much into possible scenarios.
All I am saying is that the market value for what Baker has accomplished is much higher than folks here rearview mirroring the situation.
Mayfield is a proven starter with a great future considering the patch work road that led him to today.
and OH ! He did what he did in 2023 with a weak offensive line.

  73. Joe Says:

Tom Brady had only 3 pass attempts before going in for the injured Drew Bledsoe.

Oh boy, Kyle Trask is Tom Brady.

Take off the orange and blue pajamas.

  74. BakerFan Says:

When Mayfield signs a huge contract, we will have to hear at ad nausea how he is not worth it from the same fake GM’s on here now.

  75. Gipper Says:

    Lanshark,

You are absolutely correct on the Otton route. Mayfield thought that Otton was sitting down in front of the linebackers, instead he got too deep. The final drive by the Chiefs in the Super Bowl had Kelce sitting down underneath the linebackers and safeties for easy completions. That is what Otton was supposed to be doing. No way was he supposed to be running a crossing pattern that nearly collided with the deeper Godwin. Everyone on the team knows it but Mayfield just bit his lip and didn’t hang a teammate out to dry. Most of these so called analyst on this site don’t care about the truth, they are still intent on proving their endless negative case on Mayfield.

  76. Defense Rules Says:

Gipper … ‘Never realized that this was your money. Always thought it belonged to the Glazer Family.’

Obviously the very notion of a salary CAP eludes you.

  77. Davyboy Says:

Baker is such a team player he stated he would take less money to help the team pay Evans in order to ensure his return–to help the team win. I’m pretty sure that’s the qb you want on your team. Not to mention the fact that he took a team that for the previous 3 years before he showed up went 4-44, 0-16 the previous year, to 11-5 in 2 years and played Kansas City within 5 points and KC won the superbowl 2 games later. Not that guy at qb. What geniuses

    ——

Yeah see you lost me there

market value in any market is what people will pay at a given time not what the price was before. So Watson getting 40 mill years ago doesn’t means squat if no one has 40 Million to pay now.

  79. Ethan Says:

admin Says: “Take off the orange and blue pajamas.”

I don’t wear pajamas, much less orange and blue ones. You mocked Kyle Trask’s 9 pass attempts, when Tom Brady had only 3 career pass attempts before taking over for the injured Drew Bledsoe. My point was legitimate. Try responding to it.

  80. Let em bake Says:

Tony: 3 teams that could offer baker a jones/ carr deal not in optimum draft position to acquire a qb may be the raiders, Steelers, and Vikings…( assuming cousins leaves) . Baker is only 28. Probably all moot, as Licht will do what’s necessary to keep baker .

  81. Davyboy Says:

Hey, who won the precision passing contest while competing against pro bowl quarterbacks? And who is on the shorts list of qb to ever throw the ball over 60mph in the combine? And who has the record for throwing the longest pass in a game? And who has the roookie record for most touchdowns in a season while playing 3 or 4 games less? And who is one of only 3 quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to have a perfect passing record, while on the road, of 158.3? I could go on but you get the idea. The point is, Baker, according to the experts wasn’t going to do any of those things, he didn’t have the talent, just like some of you boys here, but yet he did them and hes not through. Just like he will win a superbowl. Might not be for the Bucs, but he will win one, and you can take that to the proverbial bank. Baker loves to be told he can’t by an “expert”, like you nay sayers here. Oh, just in case you are real dense, the answer to the above is ex Sooner Baker Mayfield. Boomer Sooner Baker!!!

  82. Davyboy Says:

Who gave Cleveland their first playoff win in 30 years? And who gave Cleveland their first road playoff win in 51 years? And who took a team that wasn’t supposed to win but 4 games after Tom Brady left within a game of the superbowl? Who had a better passer rating than Tom Brady did when he won the superbowl? What do you experts want?

  83. Gipper Says:

    Davyboy,

They want to be riight about something —anything —-in their miserable existence.. Baker is just a target who makes these duds feel better about themselves. These duds are never was and never will be.

  84. Esteban85 Says:

Pay up for Mike and Baker. Improve the trenches and the run game and Baker could have an even better year. He needs to improve his consistency to be a top ten QB but I do think he’s better than Dak and cousins.

  85. Esteban85 Says:

They gave Daniel freaking jones 40 million a year bro, of course there is a team that will give Baker 30+ million a year. Don’t be stupid, there is plenty of that going around these days

  86. Davyboy Says:

I know Baker has things to work on but he has the arm talent, the football IQ and the iron will to be better next year for his teammates. He has had 8 coaches in 6 years. That would mess anyone up mentally. Stability matters and he has had none of that. I have been hoping he would find a “good” coach that believed in him and had the skill and football IQ to design the offense around his strengths, and he has strengths, while teaching him how to be better in th NFL. Baker has the IT factor and it will be proven. The only question is which coach will do it. We have had a lot of great quarterbacks at Oklahoma 4 Heisman quarterbacks but Baker was the IT out of all of them. He was something to watch and with the right coach he will be the same for the NFL-I belive
    And I agree Gipper 🙂

  87. Bucsmarley Says:

Personally ide let them both go. Not willing to invest over 60 million on a .500 streaky qb and a wr (who I have nothing but the utmost respect for) he’s age is climbing. No one beets Father Time. Let baker go to Pittsburgh and Evans go to Houston. Maybe draft a qb and sign a veteran like tannehill(to hold the clipboard) and let Trask or penix or whoever battle it out in training camp and let it be our new oc to decide who the guy is. Todd should not have a say

  88. Bucsmarley Says:

Don’t care what you believe. But not willing to invest 60 million for a .500 qb and a wr pushing 30( love you Mike. Nothing but respect but Father Time always wins) let baker collect his money 😂😂. And let Mike play in Houston. Draft a qb maybe penix? Pick up a veteran like tannehill on the cheap and let Trask, Penix? And the vet battle out of n camp and let the he new oc decide not Todd

  89. William Walls Says:

I see that the Trask fans are helping keep Kleenex shareholders in high spirits.

  90. Gipper Says:

    Defenserules,

You are too easy. Not going to bother with a response. Have a nice life no matter how confused it will be.

  91. Critmark Says:

Yes Baker has a career winning % right around .500. Same with the playoffs, .500. But that is the same postseason as Stafford and Josh Allen (yes both made it more often). But it is better than Prescott .286, Lamar .333. And when you compare TD% in the playoffs, Baker has a higher % than Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, Rodgers, Prescott & Hurts. Yes he throws INTs, but in the playoffs his INT% is better than Stafford, Prescott, Wilson and Lamar. When he gets there, he does well.

And for those who may not remember the Browns Chiefs game, there was an egregious no call when a KC defender went head first into Higgins causing a fumble into the end zone. Here is a link below. Both the KC player’s hand are at his side. Textbook spearing. That call cost the Browns 7 points in what was a 5 point game that Mahomes left in the 4th quarter with a concussion.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKSlZm6WkCQ

Now I am not saying pay him $50MM/year. But as has been stated, the market rate is much closer to $40MM than the $15-20MM that some have thrown around. Given no state taxes and him wanting to stay, I think the number will be north of $30MM, likely close to the franchise tag rate of about $35K.

  92. Big papa Says:

Best thing they could do is keep Baker Mayfield

  93. Davyboy Says:

Yes let Baker go win a superbowl at Pittsburgh hes only a 28 year old pro bowl quarterback. 🤑
Let a pro bowl receiver go because he’s 30 and has only 8 more years of being great. Man good thing Bucsmarley isn’t in charge of anything.!! Can you imagine….

  94. Davyboy Says:

Critmark is 100% right. So, try and think Bucsmarely, Baker was drafted by a team that went 4-44 previous to his arrival, 0-16 the year before and basically in 2 years would have beaten the future superbowl Champs if not for one of the most monumentally bad calls in a long long time. Really?

  95. Davyboy Says:

It was SUCH a bad call the NFL deleted it. Too many complaints for them. He “launched” and “hit the receivers helmet with the crown of his helmet”. Boom!!!!!! the mistake on the lake beats the superbowl Champs. Who was their quarterback?? 🤔

  96. Davyboy Says:

According to the NFL QB Index in week 16 of this year, Baker was the 9th best QB in the league…. just sayin Bucsmarley 🤷🏽

  97. Sunshine Says:

In the Detroit game Baker was unable to pick up the blitz 3 times. All 3 times we lost major yardage and out of fg distance. Now Purdy in the super bowl pick up the blitz and got rid of the football. Baker st this point in his career should have been able to get the Football out to prevent the sacks. Looking at next year 2024 teams we play I see 6 wins tops. Franchise Baber if he plays bad time to play Trask who is 6′ 5 230 has a rifle for a arm played big-time games in the SEC bet Georgia, almost bet Alabama.Watch his highlights quite impressive..

  98. Davyboy Says:

I agree he was good and he is the “perfect” size to play in the NFL. But there is more than height that goes into making a qb, a lot more.

  99. Gipper Says:

    Sunshine,

In Detroit game it is not a blitz when defensive end Hutchinson lines up and sacks the QB without being touched. That’s called the O lineman failing to block. It happened twice in that game.

  100. Davyboy Says:

You know in the 2017 Heisman voting Kyle wasn’t even in the top 10. Baker won and in the process shattered the passer rating. He had 203.36 and the previous record was 192.31. So….
    Good clarification Gipper

  101. Captain Vic Says:

Keep baker!! And count our blessings to even have him fall in our lap last year. Very subjective ranking by a “Baker hater” , having him at 11 when he was ranked in top 10 in every important category. Baker had a very successful season in spite of Canales, not because of him! Canalis is mediocre OC, second coming of Byron Leftwich good riddance. Gipper is correct a successful Blitz is not a completely unblocked defensive lineman and it definitely happened twice against the Lions, along with his o-line being pushed back so far into the pocket that it wasn’t a pocket and Baker couldn’t even follow through. That speaks to a whack of Talent on the o line, along with Canalis lack of creativity and attention to detail with his alignments. You can’t expect any QB to account for blown assignments.. those are going to be sacks and or injuries. And just to be clear it wasn’t just the Detroit game, that happened all year long the baker was like Houdini escaping the pocket to even complete a pass, or make a play with his legs. Great locker room guy, High character guy, teammates love him. Imagine what he’ll do with a year under his belt, and an actual offensive-minded OC! Sign Baker, sign Evans, and please sign David Moore- there’s your third starting receiver option.! Check out the dudes highlight reels every time he touched the ball. Give him more playing time! And for goodness sakes get some talent and depth at the o-line, and some legit knocked down pass rushers on the D line, and Bucs win more games than last year, win Division again, and make some noise in the playoffs!!

  102. Captain Vic Says:

Ps, Rashad White can be a great running back with an improved o-line, but he already IS a great receiver. Screen, screen, screen, give White the ball in space, and he’ll make plays,..which will also slow down the pass rush. Plus, overall he seems to pick up the Blitz well, and he seems to have really good chemistry with Baker. Plus stop cramming the ball right up the middle with no imagination, use Palmer, Devin Tompkins, Rashad, and even David Moore on end-around, sweeps, and quick flare passes. Use the whole field, i.e., the width, don’t just stretch it vertically stretch it side to side make the defense run, get tired. Just play calling 101. I have high hopes for the new OC, this could be a very exciting offense!

  103. Joe Says:

Valid points. Mostly White is good picking up the blitz. He has some f’ups but mostly is a good blocker. He’s a willing blocker, that’s for sure.

Baker is such a team player he stated he would take less money to help the team pay Evans in order to ensure his return–to help the team win. I’m pretty sure that’s the qb you want on your team.

    —————
If he was a team player he would’ve sat down when he was injured instead of being afraid of losing his position and going 1-6

  105. Davyboy Says:

Nice take on his psychological make-up. Man, you are smart. You are the only human being that I know of that can look at someone and know exactly why that person did something. Can you do that to everybody on the planet or are your skills limited to reading Bakers mind?? Do you read what’s in someone’s heart and mind or is it just their mind?? While your reading his mind can you tell us why he is the only person that has ever said I’ll take less money to help Evans out and as a result help the team win??
Now as someone that has watched Baker for almost 10 years I think I can give a more plausible reason why he did it based on history not reading his mind. It had to do with one, quiting is not part of his DNA. It’s just not in there. Second, that is a very painful injury-he is tough. And lastly, he doesn’t like letting people down. Especially those that who are depending on him. Now I don’t really know just like you don’t really know but I am betting my explanation based on years of observation is a lot more accurate than you weak assumptions based on mind reading. But in the end, who really knows the human heart and mind??

  106. Davyboy Says:

You know it’s funny how we as human beings love to judge each other without knowing all the facts. Especially those that have risen to the top. Just like ATLBuc judged Baker. Instead of thinking man Baker played 4 weeks in the NFL on a BROKEN shoulder and a COMPLETELY TORN labrum, that guy is the shiz, he wants to run him down publicly using some dark “theory” that he was afraid. I’m not sure anyone that can play 4 weeks in the NFL with a broken shoulder and a completely, not a tear but a completely torn labrum, deserves your theoretical speculation. Yeah, I don’t think I would be so ready and willing to judge a man like that. I think I would just get behind him and trust in his abilities until he has proven he cant. And he sure hasnt done that yet. I would love to see ATLBucs do that for one quarter in a high school game.

  107. Davyboy Says:

I’ll tell you how Baker got hurt in the first place. He was running for his life on almost every play back then. He was on a team that went 4-44 the previous 3 years and 0-16 the year before he was drafted. The law of averages just caught up with him. But you never heard him complain. He just kept playin. And playing hurt you don’t think he knew it was hurting him statistically? Those things you haters love to throw out from that time period. He is just getting back to his true capabilities after going through the 8 coach meat grinder. With stability he will get better each year on this team. I hope the new OC knows how to use his strengths and help him improve on his weaknesses. He was an amazing qb in college. He can be an amazing NFL qb as well.
