Todd Bowles Gives 3 Keys To A Playoff Victory

January 10th, 2024

True colors?

Warning to weak-stomached Buccaneers fans. Remove sharp objects from reach when reading the following.

Hide the remote control. Tell the kids to cover their ears.

Head coach Todd Bowles shared his three keys to a playoff victory yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

No. 1., “it’s about being stout defensively.” Joe is all-in with that.

No. 2,  is “not turning the ball over offensively,” Bowels continued. Well, protecting the football might not be more important than “scoring points” and “getting your best players the football,” but Joe gets it.

No. 3, per Bowles, is (wait for it), “being able to run it.”

Oh, man. Aside from it not being the 1998 NFL, the Bucs’ weakness offensively is running the football. They have the worst yards per carry in the National Football League (for the second consecutive season) and a quarterback that shouldn’t be running because he has multiple injuries.

If “being able to run it” is key to winning on Monday against the Eagles, then Joe isn’t sure what to say.

Many tens of millions of Team Glazer loot is invested into two stud wide receivers and a top NFL receiving back. Joe sure hopes Bowles is throwing a smokescreen out there and knows that throwing the ball is the Bucs’ best path to the next round of the playoffs.

Maybe Bowles is playing some 3D chess here and he wants Philly to gameplan on stopping run but Canales will have Baker airing it out Monday night.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to come out throwing & if Mayfield can’t , he shouldn’t play…..The Eagles will be expecting running & will stop it.

  3. Boge Says:

Ok, but if they can’t run the ball and lose, his stubbornness should get him canned.

  4. DS Says:

Come out slingin it imo don’t play scared or milk the clock. Need to score early

  5. Bucfan Says:

When the Bucs are agressive on offense early -THEY SCORE POINTS. When they are NOT, they are trying to play catch up and lay an egg!

  6. buccaneric Says:

Repeat after me, Pass to set up the run.

    Ugh.

  7. Usedtocould Says:

Man, it’s such a bummer watching bad offensive play.

  8. HC Grover Says:

Looking like one and done if they can not run.

  9. bulldog Says:

    “it’s about being stout defensively”

1 out of 3 ain’t bad. It sucks.

  10. Derek Says:

Being able to run would help. White and Edmonds have the ability to break big runs and set up the pass

  11. bulldog Says:

The Eagles will stop the run and force Mayfield to beat them passing which he can’t do because he’s not a passer.

  12. LOL Says:

Todd really needs to hire a good head coach so that he can focus on the Defense like he really wants too……..LOL

  13. David Says:

TB know his offense has been so poor in scoring. Baker will throw three picks if he lets him throw more than running the ball. Trash Baker played supposedly injure last week and Bucs were lucky to win that game with a shutout. Don’t play him if he can’t throw the ball more than 10 yards. He missed at least two TD’s last week.

  14. Popcorn Mike Says:

I think Bowles is throwing up a smoke screen. If we are all reading this article, I am sure plenty Eagle player are reading it too. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bucs don’t come out throwing. I would also like to see more of Chase Edmond this game he seems to find the hold to run though

  15. Hodad Says:

Did Joe see Baker throw the ball last week? Run Forest, run! I sure hope we can run the ball, because Mayfield hasn’t been throwing it to good the last 2 games. As I recall, Baker had trouble getting the ball past the line of scrimmage, and at least 3 of his passes bounced off defenders. If the Bucs want to come out throwing they better start Trask, or Wolford. Last time I saw Mayfield throw, it wasn’t far, or pretty.

  16. SteveK Says:

So I can count on Bowles having his $10+ million CBs ready to play man, and not give up a bitch ass cushion, asking for first downs?

Next, Will Bowles use a timeout in the first half. I almost wish he’d say to himself, screw it, I’ll use a timeout in the first half in a high leverage situation rather than at the end of the half when he just pockets and wastes them anyways. Or ice a kicker, but for crying out loud do something with them strategically.

Next, and most importantly, we need all the players to be ready. I don’t want Bowles to show blind loyalty to a certain player that may not be in a position to help us win. If baker is too injured, and he plays poorly, I’m blaming Bowles for being too scared to put a healthy/able QB back there.

Go Bucs! Win this game and I can see a way back for Baker and Bowles. Lose tomorrow, and good riddance.

  18. WiscoJoe Says:

The weakness of the Eagles defense is the secondary and Bowles wants to run the ball. Could this be the second coming of the Pittsburgh game from last year?

Surely Bowles is smarter than this… has to be a smokescreen (I hope)

  19. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe

Sorry bud but I totally agree with Todd Bowles on this one.

I said it before and I will say it again – The team that wins the turnover battle and can run the football will win this next game.

  20. BucU Says:

That 29 point 3 game stretch average we had during the win streak was the anomaly of the season.

  21. Common Sense Says:

    @joe

The offensive line is the reason we can just go pass

We have downgraded every position. The new line is still very much a work in progress and a weakness. Baker has been sacked 40 times. Brady was never sacked more than 22 times. And Brady passed way more. If we don’t run, Baker will get killed.

    Now
    Wirfs (upgrade)
    Stinnie (downgrade)
    Hainsey (downgrade)
    Mauch (downgrade)
    Goedeke (Downgrade)

    Super Bowl
    Smith
    Marpet
    Jensen
    Stinnie
    Wirfs

    ^^^^^^^^^^
I love how the Bozos like Davey Downer make it out like Mayfield is faking like he’s hurt.

  23. Saskbucs Says:

This is his plan every game! A lot of good comments on this so far, this is exactly why he needs to be canned. He plays scared. No wonder the players love him, he shields them from any blame with this nonsense. We want to see an aggressive gameplan!

If the players don’t execute and Baker sucks we will be mad at them, not the coaches. You don’t open it up and let Baker fire passes early and often, call soft runs up the middle on 2nd and 8 then call soft zones, we don’t blame the players we blame your stupid conservative calls and it makes the coaches look like idiots. And that’s where we are, back to think long Bowles and Canales are morons cause they don’t know how to put an exciting, going for the win every play product on the field.

9-0 wins over the 2-15 Panthers mean nothing to me Todd, unless you are going to win 10-0 over every team in the league … you can’t sell me on that being the way to consistently win football games. I will never hope the Bucs lose but he better be playing games or else get him outta here. Almost guaranteed we run the first 2 plays Monday night and go 3 and out. Bucs first possession punt, put the house on it.

  24. Buc4evr Says:

Todd knows that the Philly D line is stout and our O line will have its hands full. No way this team can run against them. Need to attack the secondary and use trick running plays on the edges. More coach speak.

  25. Saskbucs Says:

Worried about turnovers, maybe less targets for Trey Palmer and more for the 6’5 beast flying down the sidelines. When is the last time the Bucs got a pass interference flag thrown for them? Someone got stats on that cause I bet it’s hardly any all season and with Evans out there, that’s criminal. Seems like every time I tune in to watch Tyreek or Jefferson they are drawing them cause the QB is constantly taking shots. Now I’m on a different topic, hide the sharp objects is right!

  26. Not Says:

Please Glazer’s , read that sentence and recognize , this dude wants to run the football in 2023. Even when his RB sux azz. Please fire the guy this year dont let him destroy the team and the fan base.

  27. Slacker Says:

He’s dumb enough to stick with the run game even the the bucs can’t, and the eagles don’t get ran on. Tape is out on beating them throwing the ball.

  28. D Cone Says:

Being able to run the ball and running more are totally two different things.

You can try to pass a team out of cover 2 or ask them nice. Both will have the same success.

You have to be able to run the ball.

  29. Since76 Says:

Bowles has focused on the run all season. Don’t think it’s a smoke screen. Baker has been completely ineffective in the past two games. Yeah ide run it too. The run game was the only positive last week on the offensive side. It’s up to the defence to win the game. You know like every game this year except jax and GB.

  30. Bobby M. Says:

He’s not trying to do any type of smokescreen…..sadly he’s telling us he’s going to continue to do what he’s been doing regardless of how ineffective it’s been. Bowles will do it his way to the bitter end….its what you get with an outdated DC’s mentality. No different than Dungy. Ownership will likely realize the game has evolved to favor the offense and hopefully make a push for Monken or Harbaugh….possibly the OC in Detroit.

  31. Tony marks Says:

    Taking this into account

Canales will be gone after next year the latest because it seems like the offense is dictated to him

You may need a new Qb no matter what because an offensive minded coach has a lot more that he can offer.

it tends to explain why the team plays better and almost makes come backs in the second half -the scoreboard forces Bowles out of his preferredmode.

He’s setup a good argument for his own firing – Defense is number one and his sucks defendng the pass

  32. bucsfan951 Says:

    “being able to run it.”

and with that, folks, I expect a loss on Monday.

If you would have asked me, I would have said “simply score more points than the opponent.” It is just that simple.

  33. MarkV Says:

That right there is exactly why he should be fired. That protect the football, run and play good defense is not the path to winning championships these days. An attacking offense has to be the main focus of our game plan…

  34. Bill in Seminole Says:

Okay, run the ball. Then how about using Chase Edmunds to do so. Rachad White shuffles his feet, dances around and get nowhere.

  35. RC Says:

Baker shouldn’t have played in the last game, as he was a bit too injured. Maybe he knows Baker isn’t 100% and a pass heavy plan won’t work. Does he have the courage to put Trask in? Were we lucky that we only had to beat Carolina to get in? If it was any decent team, would Trask have played? Whether an injured Baker or an inexperienced Trask is in, running may well be the key to success. He’s not crazy in making that statement. Can they be successful running the ball? I don’t think so – but that’s why we play the games.

  36. Bosch Says:

So what he is saying is Bucs need to play one of their best four games of the season to win. That sounds about right.

  37. unbelievable Says:

Translation: “Be prepared for the exact same results as last time we played the eagles. But don’t worry, once we are down by 20+ points in the 4th quarter, we’ll throw a little more often and then talk about how we didn’t adjust fast enough.”

This man can not be fired fast enough.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

What does it matter? We cannot go all the way…so there is no point even being in the playoffs.

  39. Oddball Says:

    Smoke.

Crafty Bowles is setting them up!

OK maybe not, wouldn’t that be something.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

Reading the clown Bowles’ quotes is just exhausting. Really. Even Ray Charles can see what an inept head coach he is. This is a game the Bucs are capable of dominating, but Bowles’ offense will look like it did against the Panthers and his defense will look like it did against the Texans. Because he will insist on showing how smart he is and install schemes that confuse his own players. Get ready for zone bust and cover zero receivers blitzes.

I’m so sick of this moron I could puke.

  41. Jerseybuc Says:

Ol Todd going run himself right out of a job. Got vrabel, Harbaugh, BB floating around

  42. Bojim Says:

    Still hasn’t learned.

  43. Erik The Viking Says:

    3 keys to victory:

    1. Fire TB zero

    2. Get a real QB that can throw the rock downfield

    3. Get an actual RB that can gain more than 1.5 yards per carry.

    Here endeth the lesson.

  44. Boss Says:

    toilet bowl for president!!!!

    he’s qualified now!

  45. sasquatch Says:

He may be right considering Baker seems to be a bit handicapped getting the ball down the field right now with the rib situation. If he can’t throw it, then you better be able to run. Though, it’s hard to overlook the fact that the formula he’s recommending — defense, turnovers, and running the ball — is indeed ancient history. If your priorities don’t include big plays in the passing game, you’re not only a boring team, you’re a losing team. And with 2 great receivers, if you’re not throwing, you’re just a dumb coach.

  46. BucU Says:

I have simple aspirations. Just don’t embarrass us on Monday night. I have so little confidence in this coaching staff it’s pitiful. Prove all us doubters wrong Todd.
I’s love to have to eat crow on Tuesday.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

    The keys to victory are…

    1. Will good Baker show up.

    That’s it.

If bad Baker shows up, the team has no chance.

If good Baker shows up, which you’d hope would be the case vs the 31st ranked pass defense, then the Bucs should have a good chance of getting a W.

  48. Saskbucs Says:

So happy this thread is full of “Bowles has to go.” Seen way too many people trying to defend him lately. One name not being thrown around for the Bucs is Brian Flores and I would accept that. Guy got a raw deal in Miami and did good things with that Minny D this season. I prefer an offensive coach but could do a lot worse than Flores imo.

  49. Aaron Says:

So frustrating – we don’t have to use the “Run and Shoot” offense, but just spread them out – take a peak at coverage and drop it off if its not there…maybe even get White and Edmonds on the field at the same time. Edmonds is so quick through the hole…we can pass and still be ball controlled…sure beats doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

The thing is – most teams can defend our 11 personnel run offense using a “light” box (6 defenders)…this takes away our play-action game too! So please, lets be smart and do things differently.

    Go Bucs!

  50. BakerFan Says:

I agree…. but set it up by a successful pass game first then break off a couple of large run gains that will break their backs. Keep them guessing, but open up the passing game.

  51. SlyPirate Says:

WE JUST LOST THE GAME …

    ZERO CHANCE TO WIN …

After 17 games, you’re the WORST RUNNING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE and your head coach says the plan is to run the ball?

That’s just retarded. I know we’re not supposed to say that word but I feel like you can when something is retarded.

  52. D-Rok Says:

If the Eagles return to their week 3 form, we won’t have a prayer. We just won’t. But, this is not week 3, and the Eagles are trending massively downward, so I say it’s a 50/50 game, as always, coming down to turnovers.

It’s not like the Bucs are a team trending upwards by any means, so who knows who will win?

Pure talent-wise, the Eagles should dominate the Bucs. Let’s hope the Bucs play and play-call above their weight class for this game. Hey, anything is possible but not everything is probable.

    Go Bucs ! ! !

  53. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Saskbucs

Most “experts” had the Bucs winning 3-4 games.

This roster was built with only $148M.

This roster has 13 rookies. 4 of those rookies are starters.

I have been frustrated at Bowles the past two seasons but he absolutely deserves at least one more season.

The Bucs exceeded everyone’s expectations this season by far.

You cannot fire a head coach for exceeding expectations and winning the division and giving us Bucs fans at least one play-off game to watch.

  54. D-Rok Says:

I’m hoping/praying the Bucs realize they are a MUCH better team when running more outside runs, and I don’t mean the gimmick Benn’d arounds – those should only be used once or twice a game.

If the game calls for 20 runs, 10 should be inside the tackles, and 10 should be outside the tackles. Throw in a few sweeps, tosses, and counters. Outside runs tire out big DT’s just as much as running down their throats – most fans realize this, why don’t the coaches?

Or, is the conditioning of our O-line so suspect that the Bucs don’t WANT pullers to get an angle advantage?

As Joe has alluded to all season, R White is MUCH better in space. Why is it so obvious to us fans but the coaches have blinders on? SMH.

    Still, I reckon, Go Bucs ! ! !

  55. 941bucsfan Says:

I find it funny how this year the bucs have a “weakness” and shouldn’t be running the ball…

While last year with leftwich, they “didnt run enough” lol.

    Pick a damn side

  56. Lord Cornelius Says:

    oh man lol.

We had 1.9 YPC in the 30-12 Jaguars win.

This team does not need to run the ball well to put up points. We do not run the ball well period it is what it is. It is not a key to sh1t based on how this season’s gone.

  57. geno711 Says:

Bowles never really talks about inspiring his players. Don’t the best coaches not only know the X’s and O’s but also know how to inspire their players in the biggest games.

  58. Buc4evr Says:

Pete Carroll , make it happen Jason.

  59. unbelievable Says:

^ Pete Carroll is staying with the Seahwaks as an advisor.

I’d be okay with Mike Vrabel. Otherwise I want an offensive minded HC.

  60. Slacker Says:

Any extra games this year are an absolute plus. This year was not supposed to be set up for success post Brady. Amazing they won 9 games. I think it just shows how much of a assfest and disappointment last season was

  61. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

What is smoke is the thought that Blowels, Cornales and Becker with his broke ribs will be able to beat the Iggles with their 31st ranked pass defense since they couldn’t even scheme a touchdown against the worst team in all of football. Becker feels pressure on and he’ll run around nervous like a scared little chihuahua and will not be able to throw the ball more than 10 yards down the field. Blowles is clueless but unfortunately calling him that is an insult to clueless people

  62. Panhandle Buc Says:

    Keys:
    – Pass to set up run
    – Use CG aka the chain mover OFTEN
    – No runs between the tackles
    – No jet sweeps with 1-yard Thompkins
    – Use Palmer as a decoy ONLY – He cant win routes
    – No SOFT ZONE
    – Blitz Winfield often!

  63. Panhandle Buc Says:

Oh and use our TE’s more and go heavy pre-snap motion!! LFG

  64. Rod Munch Says:

    Marine Buc Says:

    ———

    No kidding.

I’m not a Bowles fan, thought the Bucs would be awful this season, and Bowles exceeded those expectations pretty easily. If the Bucs get good QB play on Monday night, then they’ll have a chance. Bowles made changes throughout the year on defense and the Bucs finished 7th in points against, won the division, and got a home playoff game with a roster that Vegas had at 6.5 wins.

In any case, the only way Bowles is gone is if the Bucs can get a super star name that sells tickets. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear the Bucs sniff around just to see what their options are, but short of that, Bowles earned his right to come back for ONE more year.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

    unbelievable Says:
I’d be okay with Mike Vrabel.

    ————

Another defensive minded coach who thinks you win by running the ball, like it’s 1970. No thanks. Also there’s the fact that Bowles defense has finished better than Vrabel’s in each of the last 4 seasons. Not sure what the upgrade is supposed to be here.

I’d much rather stick with Bowles for one more year and see what happens – then if we need to, go out and get a head coach who wants to play a modern offense. The idea of the Bucs having another defensive minded guy locked into a long-term deal… ugh. Makes me sick to think about.

  66. #99 the big fella Says:

I have a question for you ladies. Why can’t you support the starting quarterback? If you are a fan of the buccaneers then be a fan. If Jason light , Todd Bowles thought trask is the answer he would be starting. I can’t believe all the negativity from you guys…David you are just a pathetic loser taking up valuable air..we made the playoffs with Baker now support him and stop complaining like crotchety old men

  67. Jeff Says:

Probably consulted with Lovie Smith for the perfect game plan.

  68. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Rod

    I agree.

Unless the Bucs can bring in Harbaugh or another superstar head coach why would you fire Todd Bowles?

This is the main question I have for the fans who want to fire Todd Bowles.

    WHO WOULD BE ANY BETTER?

Forcing the offense to learn a completely new system next year?

Forcing the defense to learn a completely new system next year?

Possibly having to shift the roster to suit the new schemes?

Sorry folks but none of this makes any sense to me. Todd Bowles will and SHOULD be our coach in 2024.

  69. Boss Says:

I hope they run a lot

right into the back of the center

    WOOP WOOP!!

  70. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

We need a BIG RUNNING BACK, damn man give the ball to Keft he might be the Sledgehammer we need to win this game… I’m down with the notion of White catching the ball in the flat he has been pretty good out there breaking tackles and I remember last year him stiff arming guys like Henry does. That was pretty awesome 💯% Buc fan..

  71. unbelievable Says:

@Rod – that’s a fair point, but I’d argue the Bucs have had WAY more talent than the Titans…

  72. infomeplease Says:

The only way the Bucs can run the ball is by setting up the run by passing on first downs, preferably play action passes, or with motion to confuse the linebackers.

  73. infomeplease Says:

This reminds me of last year’s post season. I thought it was smoke screen then too. But it wasn’t. We all know how that went. Bottom line…this is Todd Bowles ‘ winning philosophy for every game!! It only works when you can run the ball. This offense was built for a “pass first” to set up the run! BA knew that! TB not so much.

  74. OlBoy Says:

Obviously he’s talking about ‘being able to run it’ after the ball is caught. That or it’s smoke.

We aren’t running on this eagles defense. At least not anything worth planning a game around. 17 games is proof enough. As mentioned eagles pass D is their Achilles and that’s where we have to attack

  75. BelleGladeBuc Says:

This is why the run is foolish.

The Eagles lined up in a 5 man front numerous times against the Bucs in the first game.

6’6” and 350 lb Jordan Davis or Marlon Tuipulotu will line up against Robert Hainsey in the A gap. Who would you bet on?

Jalen Carter who is nicknamed Baby Rhino while at Georgia and one day Hall of Famer Fletcher Cox will go one on one against either Aaron Stinnie or Cody Mauch. Who would you bet on?

Pro Bowl edge rushers Josh Sweat or Haason Reddick will match up on Luke Goedeke. Who would you bet on?

Can Canales create a game plan that can neutralize the Eagle’s defensive front?

Focus on the bright shiny objects of skill players like Baker and Trask all you want, but this game comes down to the trenches and our offensive coordinator.

@Rod – that’s a fair point, but I’d argue the Bucs have had WAY more talent than the Titans…

    ——–

I don’t disagree with that, but I also don’t see a team that vastly outperformed what you’d expect from them. While the NFC South has been really bad these last couple of season, the AFC South over the last 6 years is easily the worst division in football, and it’s not like he did anything extortionary in that time. I think he’s just a good solid coach, nothing special – and Bowles, this year, was at basically that same level.

Again, to me, the big thing with Bowles is that he shocked me by actually changing his defense when it was clear it wasn’t working. This isn’t the early season team that was running zone 95% of the time, they went back to a lot more man-to-man, and while it was bumpy for a few weeks as they transitioned, I think the defense looks much better now. Bowles gets credit for that. Also, on offense, it’s been much better in the 2nd half of the season, and when Baker isn’t putting up complete clunkers, it’s looked quite good.

Overall, I think Bowles has earned another year. If they win vs the Eagles, then obviously it’s a non-issue, he’ll be back and Baker will be back. But even if they lose, I assume Bowles is back.

  78. Ed Says:

    He just doesn’t get it.

First off, start fast, get a lead and go into halftime with some momentum so your home fans get excited, make it a home field advantage

No turnovers is fine, not issue with that

Running the ball? Get real, you can hand off to Rachad White 20 times a game and you are still going to get 60 yards and have to punt more frequently than if you were passing the ball and keeping the defense off the field. The running attack isn’t productive, its worst in league. Stop it with the running
the ball philosophy. They need to improve the passing game and get the ball downfield, they cannot run their way to touchdowns but they surely can throw to Evans, Godwin and White who know how to get into the end zone.

  79. Clint Says:

Hopefully he’s just giving lip service to the hole you have to run in the NFL to win crowd. But based on past behavior I do not think that is the case unfortunately.

I’m okay with passing and then when the run game is available to take those shots but…. Our strength is our receivers

  80. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Awww poor little whiny Baker fans getting their panties in a bunch because we all aren’t in love with him like they are. Blind to the fact that he didn’t win the job but gifted it because as a 6th year vet Blowles was just trying to keep his job. Baker might not be a bad qb but Mr. Winsome Losesome is as liable to lose us a game as win it. I’ll support him when he finally plays the way he’s supposed to and dog him when he plays the way he always tends to thank you very much

Hopefully this is a little bit of a smokescreen like a few games ago. If it is not a smokescreen then we don’t have a chance against there front 7. There weakness is there secondary and they can be had if blocking holds up.

A winnable game is about to be lost because the future real estate mogul gameplans on his wish, rather than what it’s gonna take to win the game.

Try selling real estate in central Florida, Todd.

You nailed it at the end. Bowles is going to repeat the “run it” mantra day in and day out, whether it is true or not because if you repeat something enough times, then people tend to believe it.

Hopefully Bowles will let the offense attack like they did in a few winning games this season. I expect the Bucs to run up the middle enough to keep the Eagles front 7 honest, but the game plan will be to throw about 35 passes and get the ball out within 2.7 seconds to Godwin, Evans, Otten, and White, along with a half dozen outside runs.

If the Bucs attempt a 90s style “establish the run to setup the pass” game plan, they will fall behind with too many 3 and outs, which will push Baker to play hero ball in the 4th quarter, which always leads to turnovers and losing.

Joe keeps referencing Riggins and Czonka as top inside runners. There is a kid on Missouri an all american that fits that profile. Lets draft him.
