Todd Bowles Defends Bucs Offense

January 8th, 2024

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Despite what Tristan Wirfs said about the invisible if not impotent Bucs offense the past two games, the Bucs have scored two touchdowns.

Yes, two touchdowns.

That’s terrible for a playoff team!

Still, the offense has been trash the past two weeks. Sorry, if you can only score one touchdown on two non-playoff teams, one of which is the worst team in the NFL, your offense is trash.

(If folks at One Buc Palace are irked by that accurate description, well, Joe isn’t the problem. Bucs players and coaches have the full power to change that perception and Joe will applaud it if it is corrected. Shoot, your starting left tackle had a harsher analysis.)

In his day-after presser, Bowles was asked about the blanks-shooting offense. He sort of defended the offense and gave props to the defenses the offense has faced.

“We played some decent defenses,” Bowles said. “When you execute everything goes well. When people get enough film on you and you keep doing the same thing, you have to change some.

“So we have to switch some things up. on both sides of the ball. You’re not going to be clicking on all cylinders all the time.”

Bowles is right. But how often do you see an offense with two 1,000-yard receivers and a guy tied with Cheetah Hill for most touchdown catches — and a third guy among the best receivers out of the backfield, — only have one touchdown in two games against teams whose players will be watching the playoffs like you and Joe on the coach or at Hooters?

Bowles didn’t come across as overly concerned about the lack of an offense, though he should be alarmed.

“We will do whatever we have to do to win the ballgame,” Bowles said. “As long as we have one more point than they have, that’s what we are looking for.

“We want to have consistency all the way around but the object of the game is to win by any means necessary.”

As far as players being dinged up, Bowles quipped, “We could use the extra day right now. Next week probably we’ll need a couple of extra days.”

Shockingly, the only other team in the playoffs that has scored fewer offensive touchdowns in its last two games than the Bucs is the Chiefs (Kansas City’s lone touchdown yesterday was a defensive score, a fumble return).

They scored two touchdowns against the Saints – one to Palmer, one to Godwin *unless we’re not counting Godwin’s bc it was garbage time …

“As long as we have one more point than they have, that’s what we are looking for.“

AKA keeping it close and playing not to lose, rather than playing to win.

Gee, I can’t imagine why this team comes out looking flat and uninspired so often…

  3. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

Bucs were a TOTAL OFFENSIVE JUGGERNAUT against an elite NFL team this past Sunday…..all the credit to head coach Todd Bowles!!!

  4. dmatt Says:

Bowles is satisfied with only one point more than his opponent. This is the reason he should be fired. He’s not concerned about putting points on the board. He’s fine with leading 2-0 then play defense. This guy is outta his league.

  5. Boss Says:

    to summarize.

we only need one point to win.

so much for needing 17 pts

we need to offer bowls a huge extension before the rest of the league figure this out.

  6. Beeej Says:

Carolina is one of the best defensive teams in the league, it’s a pity their offenses so bad. I figure they’re defense is a large reason why belichick is interested in coaching there

  7. BucU Says:

His own words explain why Bowles is not a viable option for where we want to go.

  8. Faspro Says:

    The bucs have an offense?

  9. BrianBucs Says:

I think maybe today’s modern NFL has passed Bowles by.

  10. Locked In Says:

You play to win the game!!!

  11. orlbucfan Says:

Carolina’s D is good. It sure isn’t cos of that new jackazz of an owner. He’s a real piece of work in a NFL ownership clique full of them.

  12. JD Still Says:

Boss: Yes, you are right, We do need to offer Bowles more money but it’s illegal to bribe a coach to leave and go to another team!

  13. B.D Says:

    I’d rather win 2 to nothing,than lose 45 to 44

  14. DungyDance Says:

I know his public comments are purposefully vague and meaningless tropes, but he needs to come up with better b.s. All we need is 1 more point? Not 2 more or 2 more or 27 more? At least Belichick’s terse pressies were funny at times.

  15. DungyDance Says:

    *pressers

  16. Buc4evr Says:

After watching the Buffalo/Miami game it’s pretty clear that our offense stinks. Bowles can’t spin it any other way. Bucs have never really changed things up on offense this season: first down run up the middle, Second try running off tackle, Third and long, pass. Fourth down, punt…..

  17. cometowin2 Says:

The only problem with winning yesterday is we are almost certainly stuck with Bowles for at least another year. I hope if we can get Belicheat or Harbaugh that the Glazer’s would do that for the good of the team. I guess we’ll see.

  18. DBS Says:

Some of these people have to be the kind that love to watch 1-0 Baseball games for hours. But complain about close football games. Then there is Goof. You can watch that for hours too.

  19. SB~LV Says:

It’s Bowles Rope a Dope offense

  20. HC Grover Says:

A happy camper who gets to keep his job for anoth year of keepin it close.

  21. Larrd Says:

    He should switch to futbol.

  22. HC Grover Says:

  23. unbelievable Says:

Too many buffoons mistaking defensive rankings for yards allowed with how good or bad a defense actually is.

Why don’t we look at POINTS ALLOWED, since points are what actually win games?

Carolina ranks #29 out of 32 teams in both total points allowed and average points allowed per game.

Their defense is not good, they just don’t give up a ton of yards.

    Educate yourselves.

  24. m milligan Says:

I agree with Buc4evr, not sure about Canales after watching all the other OC’s yesterday. Guy is nowhere near these other coaches although he doe’s need a little more to work with, namely OLine

  25. Tye Says:

Pondering on it today: They could keep the Losing HC and tell him that his way is the losers way so he will have to change by doing things the way Gruden and ARians did them or he will be terminated…

MUCH rather get a better HC all together but this could work out if owners get him to do things the way the winners do them!

  26. Jeffrey Becker Says:

unbelievable ur point loses validity when u factor in their offense’s ineptitude. panthers constantly giving ball back to opponents

  27. sasquatch Says:

He’s not wrong that winning by 1 point is still a win, but that can’t be your strategy. I mean, it’s almost complacent to be content with that. Most good coaches want to go out and find a way to get up on teams by a few scores and win comfortably. Doesn’t seem Bowles is wired that way. If they win against the Eagles, he’s definitely back as head coach, and I can only hope with a full season running Canales’ offense and an off-season to refine, that maybe they can have a somewhat more consistent attack next year.

    ———-

Well, that’s because they sat their entire starting offense.

The good news for the Bucs, is that they face the worst pass defense in the playoffs. So if there is any game at all that should make Baker look competent, it’s this matchup.

Hopefully he can get it done, because if you have a QB, you have a chance. If you don’t have a QB, if he’s as bad as Baker has been these last two weeks, then you have no chance.

Oh, so that means their defense is actually good?

NY Jets and NE Patriots are also in the bottom-3 for offensive scoring, yet both their defenses are in the top-15 for points allowed.

So much for your point 🤷‍♂️

    Defensive coaches man.

  31. Ed Says:

Is he saying that crap just to piss off fans of high level offensive football. Why isn’t this coach doing something to juice up his offense. I’m so damn tired of him making excuses about the other team’s defense taking away our stars. Its crazy, all he has to do is watch how the other teams do it.

Justin Jefferson went off yesterday with nearly 200 yards, you don’t think the Lions were not aware that he is all the Vikings have now. For the past 3 or 4 games CeeDee Lamb has been catching nearly 10 balls a game. Of course the Cowboys are playing against teams that know he’s the man. Tyrek Hill, another guy that gets more throws his way. Stephan Diggs. Mike Evans is in that class of receiver but you have to throw it his way and trust that he is a dog and goes and gets it.

Man Bowles is ruining this team with his ancient concepts. If the Bucs play like the have nothing to lose, they may win. If they play like they don’t want to lose and stay tight, they will lose!

    ………………..

Their offense averages 12 points a game, their quarterback gets sacked one drop back out of every 10, the defense is always on the field, often after a turnover

  33. WyomingJoe Says:

I love it when jerks, like many of the commenters on this site, think that they know more about football than NFL coaches. It’s just laughable.

Whether ugly or beautiful, a wonderful is a win.

    Keep winning Baker.

Yeah, good point. If the offense is continuing to go 3-and-out, not only will the defense get tired, and have to play more snaps than anyone else, which leads to more opportunities to score, it also means they’re almost certainly having to face offenses which have good starting field position, which again means more opportunities to score.

Baker was God-awful again yesterday and nearly cost the team a shot at the playoffs, but as noted going into the weekend, the Panthers are a good defense. Which is why you wanted Baker to play well, since you’d hope it would be a good test for the playoffs.

Instead, for the 2nd week in a row, with the playoffs on the spot, and possibly a new contract on the line, Baker played his 2 worst games of the season.

He HAS to play dramatically better vs the Eagles for the Bucs to have a shot.

Not even someone as demented as a Baker Boi can possibly think he’s played well enough these last two weeks to win anything that isn’t a game vs the Panthers.

  35. beeej Says:

If his health isn’t any better in 7 days then no, I agree he shouldn’t start. I’m thinking TB knew his job was gone had we lost that game, and TB STILL preferred Baker playing over a healthy Trask. I figured Baker would miss a game or 2 in the course of the season with concussions, etc, and Trask would thus get some real game experience. Didn’t work out that way, best not to throw him to the wolves now

  36. Statguy Says:

Jameis scored more TDS in victory formation 😂

  37. Fred Says:

    Is Bowles still coaching somewhere?

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Amen..to the person here who echoed real stuff..You play to win the game people
By 1 or 30. Column says its a win. Carolina played tough. This was their superBowl. We won 9 games. One better than last year. What you mad about? We won the division. Bowles is one of the cheapest paid HC’s in the NFL. We got Baker at bargain basement. All considered? We did well.

  39. Jmarkbuc Says:

Bowles could put melatonin to sleep.

The Tampa Bay Snooze-a-neers. The only thing he inspires is a nap.

  40. Let ‘em bake Says:

I feel for Bowles, having to answer the same questions, respond to the same statements , week in, out “ coach, speak to bakers grit…coach , speak to mikes resilience …. Coach , your defense… coach, your offensive struggles.. his stoic demeanor invites criticism, mistaking calm resolve for uninformed ignorance. Ian buckles is right. At the end of the day, players have to make plays . Coaching is a bit overrated, imho.

  41. Astralturf Says:

what if the bucs beat the eagles by 1 point?

  42. kgh4life Says:

If the Bucs want to beat the Eagles they have to throw the football. Points comes out of the passing game.

  43. Ted Says:

Bowles was ecstatic with that win yesterday. His favorite play is a successful FG attempt and his 21st ranked defense abused the pathetic offense of the Panthers. We I watch the other playoff teams play it’s like they are in a whole different lower league than the other teams. After three straight years of dynamic offense in the BA era, this version of Bucs football is difficult to watch. Bowles is not a good head coach and hopefully his days are numbered.

  44. BakerBucs Says:

Baker needs to play in the playoffs like he did in Green Bay they will torch the beagles.so the last 3 years of dynamic offense r u kidding they had less points per game than this season pretty well all the stats were better this year period so not count them out Monday like u guys have all season & u were wrong u guys r lucky this team was versatile this year they have a winning record when u knuckleheads said they might win 2’games like the panthers.even when baker had a perfect passer rating u morons still complained

  45. BakerBucs Says:

didn’t they make enough plays to win that is the name of the game WIN

  46. toad bowels Says:

Put a clothespin on your nose. We got to try something here to score points folks

  47. Herm Deadwards Says:

You play to win the game. Hello? Bowels got his masters in press conference-ing from the University of Herm. Panthers D is way better than the Eagles D. We get a Monday night home playoff game against a team that had no wings. Fire Dem CANNONS!

  48. BucU Says:

Baker is injured badly. You’re not gonna hear it from Baker or Bowles but he’s in bad bad shape. One extra day of rest is not gonna help with ribs and ankle injuries.

  49. Bucco2 Says:

Back up the brinks for Harbaugh already.

  50. Sacker58 Says:

Bowles is right ,because in the long run its defense that wins championships ! I will take a three point win anytime.
    Go Bucs ,go
