Todd Bowles: Bucs Will Bounce Back

January 2nd, 2024

Was Bucs coach Todd Bowles happy with how his team played on Sunday?

He wasn’t happy with anything about it.

His coaches, his players, nobody. Not only did Bowles wag a finger at coaches for lousy gameplans the moment he stepped to the podium in the bowels of The Licht House after getting slapped around by the slimy Saints, Bowles also remarked his team couldn’t have beaten a high school team.

“This Joe” believes that loss was so bad it could linger.

Bowles was asked yesterday if the Bucs could shake free of the memory of Sunday’s loss in time to have full focus on the Stinking Panthers.

Remember, win and they are in for the Bucs, just like it was Sunday. Bowles is confident.

“This [loss] will be easy to get out of [their minds],” Bowles said. “We lost, what, three or four in a row and got out of that one.

“This one was hard because it was trying to clinch the division, but you got another chance to clinch it this week and we can’t worry about what happened yesterday. We’ll correct it, move on, and get ready for Sunday.”

Joe believes Bowles when he says the Bucs will have their heads screwed on straight Sunday facing the worst team in the NFL. However, Joe remembers Bowles’ first year with the Jets in 2015, when all he needed was a win over the 7-8 Bills and Tyrod Taylor in the final week of the season to clinch a playoff berth.

Bowles and the Jets choked that game away, missing the playoffs, as rotten Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three picks and the Bills won 22-17.

Hey coach genius? How will you “correct it” if u didn’t even know the game plan was a disaster until AFTER the game was played? You’re a fraud Bowles.

  2. Boss Says:

Him blaming the coaches when he is the D guy and Canales calling the same stuff lefty did points to Todd imo

So, Todd takes off the handcuffs this week and we win.

That’s what I get out of this last few weeks and I did not even have to watch the games.

  3. Hodad Says:

Thanks for that piece of Todd Bowles coaching history Joe, but it comes as no surprise. I’m one Buc fan who wouldn’t be surprised if history repeats itself in Carolina. Call this the Bowles bowl. Win he’s most likely back, lose good bye Bowles. Guess it’s still a win if we lose.

  4. BucU Says:

I tried to give this guy a chance to succeed. He’s a very good man but he’s an awful NFL HC. When he is fired does anybody believe he’ll get another HC job in this league? Never ever gonna happen. One more thing. Please stop with the Bowles is a defensive genius. I never want to hear that phrase again as long as i live.

  5. SB~LV Says:

    In Wall Street lingo
    A Dead Cat bounce !

  6. Spb264 Says:

I’ll go as far as to say TB not only has to win on Sunday but he also has to win the 1st round playoff game.
Another loss at home in the playoffs would make 3 consecutive.
The first with him as DC against the Rams after Brady brought the Bucs back in that game only to have his defense choke it away.
The second would be the embarrassment last year against the cowboys

Another playoff loss at home this year would prove that he’s not a head coach you can count on to lead your team to the promised land.

  7. Mark hardt Says:

2 tds and 2 int for 309 is actually a decent day for an NFL QB this year. The issue is Baker has to be perfect because Canales does not give him chances to make up for it. I think Flacco had 2 int in a win recently. The difference was Stefanski let him throw it again. Canales gets this loss for not going to the no huddle 3 series earlier. Running into the line 3 scores down in the 3rd is what lost the game not Baker.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If the coaches had bad game plans, they were game plans that Bowles approved……so….Todd, your responsible for them.

I do think we will bounce back (If the game plans are good)

  9. Bosch Says:

Quote from The Outlaw Josie Wells. I say all that talk is worth doodly squat.

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Bowles better be talking to his OC about correcting play calling. A random Bucs fan could do a better job of play calling than what we saw out of Canales Sunday. Not even high school level play calling it was so bad. The guy is full of coach speak garbage and I hope someone hires him as a HC in the off season.

  11. BucsFan81 Says:

Bowles is getting fired this will probably be his last game thank god and we can all move on from this disaster of an experiment. As much as I loved Arians as the coach this was a really dumb move by him to appoint Bowles as his replacement.

  12. garro Says:

    Wow!

Finally some strong words publicly about the team he is responsible to prepare for games. To include his very own hand picked staff? You know, the staff that everyone including him used as an excuse for last seasons train wreck?

A couple of guys reminded me of Donovan Smith from last year. Looked like they wanted to start the off season early. Lack of any intensity. JTS was, on at least one occasion just plain loafing! Not to mention the usual “brother in law” …leaning on the O lineman trick. My old head coaches name for it. I can’t believe this staff does not see this crap same as I do! Looks more like pro wrestling than football!

    Go Bucs!

  13. Since76 Says:

He blamed his coaches. Not himself. Nuff said. This team doesn’t really deserve the playoffs.

  14. Bojim Says:

If they win the division AND at least one playoff game then Bowels, Canales and Baker will be back. I’m really concerned about Sunday.

  15. Frank Pillow Says:

Uhhh, Coach, you lost 6/7 games. That’s not exactly the definition of resilience. Definitely not a positive attribute of a winning culture and the kind of leadership that wins championships. Get real. This team spirals again against a lousy, but more highly motivated Panthers team.

  16. Popcorn Mike Says:

Although Bowles is the DC and play caller, a lot of the defensive problems an are the players. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the CB trail the WR by a yard or so and WRs wide open. You can’t make me believe this is all bad play calling. Yes I think Bowles should scheme a little different here and there but my question is does he have the players. They spent big bucks on the CBs and neither has lived up to expectations. Is Bowles just not putting his player in the right position?

  17. Rayjay1122 Says:

Hopefully this Sunday the Tampa Bay Dazeneers can wake up and stay up because otherwise it will be short and ugly against Philadelphia.

  18. Beeej Says:

I don’t think you can coach getting manhandled or not on the line of scrimmage

  19. Pelsbuc61 Says:

He couldn’t get his team to be jacked up to win a division at home. Enough said.

  20. Bucfan Says:

Please lose to the Panthers. Then the Glazers will move on with another coaching search. The Bucs will be one & done anyway. If they do win, guess who will be back as H/C and next year will be another lousy season.

  21. SB~LV Says:

    Bowles…
a Elvis “ thank you very much “
a Ray Charles “ hit the road jack”

  22. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Good article Joe’s!! We need to go back to Britt starting and staying in the game…The defense reverted back to Devin White defense!! huge chunk plays in the middle of the field. Where was Watts!! Go Biucs!!

  23. dbbuc711 Says:

He’s trying to save his job

  24. orlbucfan Says:

The Bucs had a very bad game. Period. The worse is Canales. I believe they will bounce back cos they have something to prove. I’m also a long time fan, and have seen worse. A LOT worse. @Mark hardt, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

  25. Andrew Fish Says:

Im excited to watch more blitzing on the defense with the extra soft coverage so the QB has the open guy to release it quick. Im also excited to see all the runs for 1 or 2 yards up the middle.

This Team would have 10 or 11 wins with average coaches. I haven’t been this frustrated with coaching since Mike Smith was the DC.

  26. SufferingSince76 Says:

Is Arians still on the payroll? If so, why isn’t he advising?

  27. My Momma Says:

Todd was probably in a sugar daze after celebrating the win against the Jags with a little too many post game cookies.

  28. realistic-optimistic Says:

The 2 fumbles were kinda fluky plays. RWhite was a carrying the ball a little loose, but it was in his outside arm, and he was one step from the sideline. Even if a player fumbles there, the odds are pretty high that it goes out of bounds. Somehow that ball just died as soon as it hit the ground. No bounce. Unlucky.

Palmer’s fumble was pretty ridiculous too. Great fingertip catch, then caughs it up going to the ground without being touched. He does kinda have butter fingers though. He lost the handle on a would-be catch in the TEN game (after a challenge) while going to the ground. And, he does have a couple drops this year. Still, that was a strange fumble. Not something you see every week in the NFL.

To me, the biggest killers in that game were poor QB play and soft line play. The run-pass ratio wasn’t as run-heavy as Joe claims, but there were not enough outside runs. Everything was inside. The QB could’t hit the broad side of a barn for 3 qtrs. His first INT was badly underthrown with very little pocket pressure. He had time to set his feat and throw to the back pylon, but he rushed it. And his batted balls are killing this team. One of them resulted in his second INT.

It’s not surprising that we got pushed around by NO. They have frequently been the more physical team in our matchups. I definitely was not expecting a season sweep of them. Let’s see if Bowles has this team ready against CAR.

  29. Rusty Shackleford Says:

If the Bucs do lose then it may become a franchise altering loss: Bowles and staff gets fired, Baker isn’t re-signed, and the rest of the team is blown up and we start from scratch circa 2009.

  30. BrianBucs Says:

Of course the Bucs will bounce back, they play the worst team in the NFL who just got shutout by the reeling Jags.
If the Bucs do lose this game and miss the playoffs then Bowles and his staff should be fired that night

  31. Pewter power Says:

We’ve wasted two years with this guy. Getting to the playoffs and expected to be blown out at home again in the wild card round.

This guy is too nonchalant for my taste. You don’t get to a point of having that type of money with that type of attitude. Glazers should be mortified

  32. Tye Says:

In the history of football: has there EVER been one of the worst HC such as Bowels is and years later proved to be a winning HC?

TB will ALWAYS be a detriment to winning and keeping him as HC another season is actions screaming to fans and players that winning is not important!

  33. PewterStiffArm Says:

Bowles should have said “The Buc’s better bounce back”. That includes every fan that was sitting in that stadium and those watching that debacle from home, mic drop.

  34. No Mercy Says:

Biggest game of the year and the Bucs come out completely unprepared. That’s on the coaches

  35. HC Grover Says:

    Follow the bouncing ball….and a 1 and a 2….

  36. Fred Says:

It’s probably time to break out the paper bags again. The coaches can easily blow this next game too.
