Not Quite Charles Sims

January 1st, 2024

When Rachaad White started flashing his strong skills in the passing game this season as a second-year running back, Joe was eager to track whether White could exceed the production of another third-round draft pick of a Bucs running back in 2015.

That was Charles Sims’ second season in the Tampa Bay backfield.

Sims stunned the NFL with 51 catches for 561 yards and 4 touchdowns in 16 games. That was 11 yards per catch out of the backfield, good for 22 first downs.

So how does that compare to White this season through 16 games? White has 60 catches for 531 yards (8.9 yards per catch) with 3 touchdowns and 22 first downs.

The edge goes to Sims.

So when Bucs fans talk to Joe about how special White is in the passing game as if they haven’t seen it before, Joe points to Sims, whose play declined before he got injured. He was out of the league with an injury settlement in 2018.

Joe believes White has better hands than Sims did. Sims was a better rusher before he got hurt.

For those who didn’t watch Sims, his highlights are here. They’re impressive, and it’s a fun look back at The Lost Decade.

I’ll give White more credit for hitting a hole full stride than Tippy Toes Sims.

  2. SB~LV Says:

Rhett and Graham were both better than White

  3. orlbucfan Says:

Wasn’t fun being a Bucs fan back then. It’s much better now. Lost Decade? How about the 1980s?

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Put White in a Winston offense where you’re throwing for more than 42 yards at halftime, and celebrating 224 yards passing as being a big day, and he’d have 1200-yards receiving.

  5. Jeff Says:

Bucs need a true Factor-back. White is an excellent backup and garbage time yard eater.

  6. HC Grover Says:

Waste case. Average RB, Perfect for the .500 forever Bucs.

  7. steele Says:

A typical Rachaad performance. Slo Mo had big hole and tip toed into open space (he needs both), long strided into open field, and fumbled the ball. Then he slo-mo’d and tried to vault over a guy, and failed.

Not a feature back, not decisive, not explosive. 3rd down back or backup, gadget, and only in a system that can tolerate a limited set of tools.

We have not had a good running game since Alstott.

There’s a reason for that. The NFL abandoned the fullback position. As a result, teams have to hope for a superstar RB in the draft.

Back when fullbacks existed, teams did not need great RBs. They used the two and together they produced.

It would work today. Defenses are not accustomed to the i formation anymore.

Get a big healthy bruiser freight train fullback/halfback to punish the defensive line in the first quarter, and they will run out of gas by the half. Then the elusive back will find the holes.

Catching passes would be a secondary concern.

Or…we could wait forever, go thru back after back like we have been…and never find a running game.

Good call and we already have that or as close as you gonna get to that in todays NFL in Ko Kief. I believe that is how Caneles planned to use him and makes you think how our season running would have been if we went to Stinne sooner.

More reason to draft maulers at G

Heh Joe make this happen: “With the ? pick of the NFL 2024 draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers pick Michael Penix jr..” Damn he just threw almost the entire field (77yd) for an easy reception. Wow!!!!!!!!!

  11. Larrd Says:

This is the only place I ever see folks claiming White is some sort of Paul Warfield out of the backfield, and it is usually Joe.

    The other Joe, I guess?

  12. JOe Says:

    firethecannons:

Been on the Penix hype train for months!`

  13. HC Grover Says:

Half as%%%% draft pick due to half@@@ coach.

  14. HC Grover Says:

The Bucs at 8-8 are just what the owners want. Steady as she go. Income.

Martin and Sims were theist backfield in the NFL for 1 season.

Logan Mankins was a stud for us.

James Winston was crazy. Every game with him was an emotional rollercoaster.

    RIP to VJax.

Demar Dotson was a stud. Should have caught some TD’s as. TE. (division 1 basketball player and a 6-8 TE)

Davin Joseph was an elite guard.

Charles Sims never got enough carries. He was underused when he was here.

    And God bless the injured:

    Mike James and Cecil Fields

    Watching Texas/Washington game right now….

I loved Jayden Daniels for the a is to consider a trade-up to draft….
Michael Penix is PLAN B here…

Penix throws the ball so effortlessly and he’s got such a gun!!!
Accurate as hell with the deep ball, and runs when he needs to…
    Very mobile though…

Based on Bucs draft pic, Penix needs to be the target in the draft and elect him compete with Kyle Trask next year…

Don’t wanna see an expensive contract for Mayfield..

  17. Larrd Says:

I don’t care if Penix is the next Mahomes or Montana. His name is too close to “penis” for me to root for him.

  18. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Pretty funny Larrd 😂

  19. realistic-optimistic Says:

I think Penix is the star QB in this draft class. He definitely looks like he has IT. If he falls to 10 or lower I really hope Licht swings a trade up. Anything higher than that is probably too rich.

  20. Proudbucsfan Says:

I like that RB from Michigan Blake Corum, he is shifty, powerful and fast. I’d like to see him in a Bucs uniform. We definitely need to draft one this draft.

  21. garro Says:

    Good analogy Joe!

They should show some of those to White (and Canales) me thinks.

    Go Bucs!

  22. Danny Says:

You clearly remember Charles Sims very different than I do.

  23. Ed Says:

Sims was much quicker than White, he had acceleration. I noticed how on the fumble play, White slowed down. Unless you are trying to run out the clock at the end of a game, I never want to see a back slow down like that. He isn’t fast enough to hesitate, he needs every bit of momentum and stride to get any speed going. I don’t like his running style, he must have been a Levion Bell fan as a kid but he doesn’t have that explosiveness to do the stop and start routine.

Bucs RB coach needs to teach him how to put his head down and run the damn ball into the hole. 3.4 yards per game is the worst in the NFL for a full time RB.
