Mike Evans: Bucs Are A Different Offense Since Loss To Eagles

January 12th, 2024

Talking offense.

In a sense, Mike Evans wants payback.

When the Bucs hosted the Eagles in Week 3, the Eagles pretty much stomped Tampa. Evans didn’t have a great night, catching 5 of 10 targets for 60 yards.

Evans said yesterday he always looks forward to facing a team the second time in a season, especially if the Bucs lost the first time But Evans noted not only is the Bucs offense different, he expects a different Eagles team as well Monday night.

“They’re going to change up some stuff, we’re going to change up some stuff,” Evans said. “We’re a little different – we were trying to find our identity early in the season.

“I’m definitely looking forward to this opportunity. I remember in the first game, the rain was a little bit of an issue in the second or third quarter, but other than that, I remember they were more physical than us. We’ve got to come with it, physically.”

Joe knows Bucs fans will roll their eyes reading Evans’ quote saying the Bucs are different. It reminds Joe of what Evans told Joe in the locker room right after the Bucs beat the Packers in December.

Joe told Evans that for the first time all year, it looked like the Bucs opened up the offense — and look what happened.

Evans told Joe, “You have to remember, we’re still learning this offense,” Evans said. “And Dave [Canales] is still learning us.”

So which offense will we see Monday night? Will it be the explosive offense that lit up the scoreboard in Green Bay and at home against Jacksonville?

Or will it be the offense led by an injured if not handicapped quarterback that couldn’t score a touchdown Sunday on the worst team in the league.

unfortunately, we are a different offense the last two weeks. I think as Dave makes strides, the oppenent figures it out.

  2. SteveK Says:

Feed Mike the the rock! 10+ targets please!

  3. Since76 Says:

I don’t want to hear about injury. If he plays he’s healthy period. Time to put up or shut up. No excuses. He has the weapons to succeed. Try using them this week.

  4. heyjude Says:

Hoping to see the explosive offense Monday Night!

Mike mentioned that the rain was a little bit of an issue in the second or third quarter. I did read that there could be rain that evening. Maybe they will practice outside today?

  5. Buc4evr Says:

Prove it on Monday night. Running up the middle isn’t going to work. I have a feeling that Bowles and Canales won’t change the offense for the Philly game, hope I am wrong.

  6. Buc4evr Says:

With the rain issue they need to be practicing with the sprinklers on and need the shoes with the longer cleats. ( I know they don’t have real cleats anymore just not sure what call them).

  7. Joshua porter Says:

Bucs will either win or get blown out…. bucs 27 eagles 21

  9. realistic-optimistic Says:

This team averaged 11 PPG over the final 2 games, both win-and-in scenarios. Evans has averaged 46 YPG over that span. Somebody is just saying the PC things.

  10. HC Grover Says:

Bucs win this one. After all it is the Eagles. Bowles will keep it close. Bucs on a long FG.

  11. Boss Says:

this team is all talk until proven otherwise.

  12. NE Fan Says:

What’s different? I know they are getting worse.

  13. Jeff Says:

Philly 20 Yucs 3. Weather will be a factor and Baker is still badly hurt.

  14. NE Fan Says:

AJ Brown injury is huge for Bucs success. If he plays the Bucs are over matched.

  15. Upstate NY BUC Says:

    GODWIN Please!!!! Go Bucs

  16. Defense Rules Says:

It’s all about the Bucs’ DEFENSE. With Mayfield starting, our offense will be lucky to put up 13 points against Philly. Does anyone REALLY expect him to hit DEEP passes to Evans or Palmer, or even INTERMEDIATE passes to Godwin? We’ll see tons of short passes with some runs thrown in, and the Eagles’ defense can handle both of those.

Still, our defense is relatively healthy right now & is playing very well IMO. Our defense has only given up 98 points over the last 6 games (5 wins, 1 loss) … 16.3 yds/game average. But we’ve hel;d our opponents UNDER 13 points in 2 of the last 3 games. IF our defense can do that once again, we’ve got a chance.

  17. Jerseybuc Says:

Way different team. Kancey didn’t play n Diaby was only 2 games old also. Pressure hobbled hurts hit em over n over

  18. NE Fan Says:

The Bucs are ranked 23rd in D and 23rd in O, the party is over Monday night, there are no more NFC South games left to be played.

  19. BillyBucco Says:

If you go watch the game again from last time, the Bucs were in the game through the middle of the 2nd quarter and just didn’t execute.
    This time will be different.

Hurts finger evens out the hurt QB issue and may be worse for them.
No way AJ Brown will be 100%
That was the game directly after he blew up on the sideline and they force fed him the ball early.
That won’t happen this game for obvious reasons.
Also, Bowles has an issue getting his team fired up and playing fast. We have talked about the defense being to complicated but either way, a playoff game will have this team jacked.
If they come out fast, Bucs might win handily.
    Bucs 34-17

  20. NE Fan Says:

Billybuc@ relax, the Bucs scored 30+ points in only 3 games against bad D’s. I will take a dinged up Brown over a 100% Davis any day. It’s ain’t gonna happen.

  21. infomeplease Says:

The team that makes the most plays and the least mistakes will win!! I’m hopeful but not so much so as to lighten my wallet! LFG!!!

  22. orlbucfan Says:

Bucs will be practicing outside. There are two extreme weather conditions that would force them inside: tornado and/or ground lightning warnings/strikes. Those conditions would also cancel the game. I hope for decent weather.

Man, I hope we beat the crap out of the eagles and send them into the offseason upset, dysfunctional and looking for a new coach’

The (HC) loser of this game is getting fired!

  26. BucU Says:

O Line and Dlinewill get manhandled again. No run game and no time for BM to throw. We’ve seen this movie before.

  27. David Says:

IF the gameplan is not to pass pass pass they will fail. Eagles pass defense is atrocious.

  28. TonySoprano Says:

For the life of me I can’t understand how a professional OC supposedly spends hours studying game film and keeps coming up with the useless, hair-brained idea to just keep pounding it between the tackles every game.

I have no faith anything will change this game. It will be the same simple, unimaginative, stubborn, boring gameplan.

  29. Matt Ware Says:

Yes, I’m the Original Buc Fan 1976, I’ve been through the Good, Bad, & Ugly. Just a brief note DC, I’m sure as a Play Caller (“the only thing Constent is Change”. Therefore with an Aggessive Eagles Front it’s easier to just allow them to be Who they are but simply you upfront protection, also quick 3 step drops, reverses, & few screen passes in oder to Keep that Defense Honest,Since we understand that a 9 point Game will not allow this Bucs Offense to be All they Came be!! This referred Too as the “That Win or Go Home Mentality! GO BUCS!

  30. D Cone Says:

Hurts was LP in practice yesterday and Mariota probably took some of the Reps just in case and Hurts will be Questionable and a game time decision.

You might want to change your name, trolltard! New England had one of the worst offenses EVER this year! 😂😂😂😂😂

  32. Jack Clark Says:

Fake news. The Bucs could not even score a touchdown against the worst team in the NFL last week so how has their offense changed since they lost to the Eagles? 😂

For the life of me I can’t understand how a professional OC supposedly spends hours studying game film and keeps coming up with the useless, hair-brained idea to just keep pounding it between the tackles every game.

Only thing I can see that makes any sense is it tends to keep the rush inside the Tackles. This makes it easier for the Tackle to release on WR screens and keeps the defender out of that throwing lane. Got a feeling that screens are going to be a big part of the Bucs offense along with the pounding up the middle of course.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

The New England Patriots scored 13.9 points per game this season.

He should change his name to Tom Brady fan because he for dayum sure isn’t loyal to New England 😂

  36. Conner50 Says:

Feed Mike Evans early and often! Just game plan the offense around him,Godwin in the slot and throw it to white with screens and dump offs. Don’t run it up the middle on this defensive line. Bucs 23 eagles 21

  37. Joe in Michigan Says:

*New England had one of the worst offenses in the NFL this year, not ever.

  38. NE Fan Says:

Joe but #8 in D. That’s what happens when you sign below average QB’s and WR’s.

  39. NE Fan Says:

Bucs #23 offense, #23 defense = easy schedule. GB and a limping banged up Trevor Lawrence is your claim to fame?

  40. Statguy Says:

Seems like they have dialed back pretty vanilla the past couple games. I’m hoping it’s cause they have some plays in the bag they been trying to hang onto for this moment

  41. Joe in Michigan Says:

NE Fan: You talk about Lawrence being banged up, but take no consideration to Mayfield being banged up? Mayfield isn’t great, but he’s not below average either.

  42. Pryda…sec147 Says:

Ohh no we got the swagger back

  43. Defense Rules Says:

NE Fan … ‘Bucs #23 offense, #23 defense’.

Most real fans understand that POINTS win games, not YARDS.

Bucs had the #20 offense in POINTS SCORED, but the #7 defense in POINTS ALLOWED.

Bucs’ defense only allowed 325 points in our 17 games BTW … 19.1 PPG … despite an major influx of new players. That was the lowest Points Allowed Per Game average by a Bucs’ defense since 2007 when Monte Kiffin was our DC.

And yes NE Fan, our defense was significantly better than New England’s this season (they ranked #15 in Points Allowed), despite all our new moving parts & more than a few injuries.

  44. NE Fan Says:

DR. I don’t rank the teams, professionals do and you can disect it anyway you like to better fit your needs but OVERALL defense ranking Bucs ate #23 and their O is also #23. The Pat’s D was #7. I don’t know how OVERALL is determined but maybe strength of schedule is a factor.

  45. Colonel Angus Says:

Damn NEFan, DR just schooled your clown a$$!

Points are a consideration but you really need to factor in other things like punts and turnovers..

Jets and Pats are 12 and 15 in points allowed but punted the most at 99 and 98. I’m sure their turnover are higher also. Crappy offense reflects negatively on the defense.

Bucs are 7 in points allowed and the 23rd most punts with 77. Some of the Defensive success has to be attributed to Special Teams.

If Bucs offense wasn’t so bad Defense would look even better.

8 teams with fewest punt are all in the playoffs and range from 44-59. 5 of them are top 10 in fewest points.

5 NFC playoff teams are in that top 8 but Eagles are 4th in punts and almost dead last in Points Allowed.

That is about the only thing that makes me think that just maybe the Bucs have a chance Monday Night.

  47. unbelievable Says:

We’ve got to come with it, physically.

    Preach Mr. Evans, preach.

The question is- can the team actually come out and be physical? Are they even capable?

And of course- is Mayfield even able to throw a ball right now?

  48. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

That’s news to me because it sure enough looked like the same offense to me except for the Packers and Jaguars games recently, and Baker was at the center of all of them as well. We have seen as good as he will ever be Mr. Winsome Lonesome. Any Bucs fan who has become one of his fanbois is rooting for a mediocre offense no matter who the HC or OC is

  49. RGA Says:

Let’s hope they are different then the last two weeks

  50. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Same coaches same qb same result. Eagles gonna throw some bbq sauce and coleslaw on Faker’s ribs and eat him for dinner. Bruised ribs and ankle don’t heal in a week and he can barely throw 10 yards. All you thinking Blowles won’t play zone while ineffectively blitzing and Cornales knows how to not run it up the gut ad nauseum are fooling yourselves. It’s really going to suck having to suffer through these last three games of the season watching the ineptitude that has happened with this team, but no matter the outcome. I’m going cheer my team not the fakerbois who cheer for one man

  51. Ted Says:

The hope is that a leopard will change its spots and Bowles is instructing Canales to implement an aggressive offensive game plan with deft passing plays and getting involved creatively creating opportunities in space for our play makers. I am afraid that Bowles will be Bowles and see a struggling Eagles team as an opportunity to showcase his 21st ranked defense and his obsession with a 1950’s offense. Unfortunately, this is usually a recipe for disaster but I guess we will see on Monday night.
