Baker Mayfield Has Confidence In Kyle Trask

January 3rd, 2024

Bucs QB Kyle Trask.

The pressure may be on.

Bucs backup quarterback Kyle Trask may make the first start of his three-year career Sunday if injured Baker Mayfield can’t make a go of it. A quarterback with injured ribs who couldn’t practice (if there was a full practice Wednesday) is not a good thing. Hard to throw with “sore” ribs.

So if Mayfield cannot go, or if he struggles throwing due to his ribs, it may be Trask Time.

No pressure on the Florida product. Only the playoff hopes of the team are at stake.

Win and you’re in. Tie and maybe you get some help. Lose and it’s time to hit up Tulum or the DR.

No pressure at all.

Mayfield, speaking about Trask today, believes the Bucs are in good hands. Mayfield has all the confidence Trask can pinch-hit well.

“It’s been great,” Mayfield said of his relationship with Trask. “In the offseason we both pushed each other to be better.”

Mayfield said he knows how tough it is to be a backup.

“From being [a backup] in Carolina last year, having to sit in a backup role and active, it’s tough to stay locked in when you are not necessarily getting the reps.

“But he’s back there doing everything he needs to do.”

Trask always has the lines of communication open in the quarterback room to stay alert and prepared as possible, Mayfield added. “He’s ready to go whenever he gets his shot.”

And that could come Sunday. Who knows what the makeup of this team will be come springtime if the Bucs lose Sunday?

Now this game is actually interesting. Finally we’ll get to see what Trask can do for better or worse.

  2. m milligan Says:

One hit on Mayfield and he will be out of the game. Not gonna be able to scramble………………………………

  3. Rod Munch Says:

I hope Baker is fully ready to go and we don’t get a bunch of excuse making. The Bucs have to win this game, and if the team collapses and doesn’t make the playoffs – then Bowles and Baker should both be given the boot.

BTW, Justin Fields has won 4 of his last 5, been a lot more consistent and overall better than Baker over that span and would cost a lot less money, meaning you’d have a good chance of being able to keep everyone. He should be available on the cheap.

  4. Boss Says:

    LFG!!!!

    finally a reason to watch!!

  5. RichieRich Says:

Rod Munch get off the heavy narcotics.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

So what happens if Trask starts and throws 5 TD passes?
Does Baker return in the playoffs still sore?

  7. Big Red Says:

Please start Kyle Trask. Let Baker rest. See what Kyle is made of for 4 quarters.

Worst case scenario (barring career or significant injuries to players):

    – Trask stinks it up. We lose, Saints win, we go home early and avoid getting embarrassed in the playoffs, we get a better draft pick, and we don’t overpay to keep Mayfield.

  8. Jeff Says:

It’s over Yucs fans. Bucs have a 5% chance of beating Carolina with Trask. Fun season except for the middle and end.

  9. Craig Says:

There is no fault with Trask for being stuck two years with Brady up.

This does make the game a lot more interesting. If Trask plays well, where do the Bucs go from there.

If Bowles can snag the credit of Trask playing well, does he stay another year? Is Baker still his guy, and does a good game make Trask good trade bait.

I would really hate to see him do well to be traded and coming back to haunt the Bucs.

Yes, I think Trask will be as ready as can be, and it will go reasonably well, but it will not be great, because it always takes a few games to get it together.

  10. StormyInFl Says:

If Trask starts, at least Bowles will be gone and the Bucs have a pick with a shot to draft an actual NFL caliber QB.

  11. go dawgs Says:

Wolford>Trask. Bucs would be smart to start Wolford if baker cant go. Wolford has real nfl game experience, not one overthrowto a perfectly open receiver in rhe end zone. Trask can watch the game in Gainesville with Ole hillbilly

  12. NE Fan Says:

Mayfield taking the easy way out. He knows if he loses against Carolina his career as a starter is pretty much OVA!!! The scapegoat for Blowzo and Mayfield will be Trask. Bus runneth over.

  13. D Cone Says:

What sit and let the back up come in and possibly reduce his leverage for a bigger payday by playing well? Not gonna happen. He’ll play sore and check down all day. Heaven forbid Trask come in and put up a TD on the first drive of the game all season.

If Mayfield insists on playing let him Bake or Burn.

Don’t know where he comes off knowing what it’s like to be a back up.

Transfers in college because he couldn’t start. Benched to Back Up in Cleveland and asked for a Trade. Benched to Back Up in Carolina and asked to be released.

  14. ATLBuc Says:

If Kyle starts, we should score at least 40 points!!!

  15. Defense Rules Says:

M Milligan … ‘One hit on Mayfield and he will be out of the game. Not gonna be able to scramble’.

Baker’s pretty tough & he’d suck it up providing that he’s able to. I’m sure that all starting QBs remember very well how Tom Brady got his start in New England … and never relinquished the starting role to Drew Bledsoe after that.

And BTW, Carolina’s defense is doing terrible overall (ranked #30) but they’ve been excellent against the pass (ranked #3 in Passing Yards Allowed). Not so much against the run though (ranked #23 in Rushing Yards Allowed & #30 in Rushing TDs Allowed … 25 TDs).

Mayfield had a yuck game against them in our 1st meeting (14-of-29 for 202 yds with 1 TD & 1 INT). But we won 21-18, although they closed it to 3 points with over 5 minutes still to go, so the game was fairly close. I’m sure that they’d love nothing better than to send us home with a loss (and possibly no playoff spot depending upon what New Orleans does).

  16. Zoocomics Says:

I get where Rod Munch is coming from in his post. There is nothing worse than to being in this scenario we are in now, where we now create excuses on why people will be here next year even if we lose the last game and are eliminated from the playoffs. Why? Because of the injuries, god I hope management has a better holistic picture of where this franchise is going and that if we blow this last game, even if Trask is at QB, I’m sorry but it might be time to clean house.

I know it sounds crazy, I know, but there are teams more beat up than us that figure out how to play-up when needed. This team needs to be 100% healthy to stay in a game… really, the Bucs have one of the healthiest offenses I bet in the entire NFL regarding season ending injuries. Our current Oline probably is top 10 in consecutive starting reps together.

This is the difference between ok coaches and elite coaches. Shanahan has his flaws, but that team doesn’t blink when they have to insert a backup into that system he runs. Bengals, Rams, don’t know what those guys are doing so well that other teams can’t duplicate, but damn is there system QB friendly for even backups to have success and win games.

Lets be honest, this team should be good enough to win a close game with a backup QB like Trask against a 2-win football team… how many other teams have figured out how to win games with backup QBs this season, against teams that are way better than the Panthers. The Panthers aren’t exactly healthy either, they just lost one of their better WRs to IR. If our Def is healthy, we win this game.

I’m sorry, I’m not in the camp that Baker has some how become our savior, at the right price would love to see him back but frankly I don’t think he’s special. But at the right price, I’m good with him in the meantime getting us to the playoffs or close to it year in and year out, but whoever thinks that this will be the guy if we ever sniff another NFC championship game is crazy.

  17. Zoocomics Says:

Oh, and how bad@ss would it be if Trask gets the start and he absolutely lights up the score board?

  18. Mark hardt Says:

If you want to lose you are not a fan.

  19. Boss Says:

Trask will be rockin the scoreboard with his porn stash!

  20. orlbucfan Says:

Plenty of phony fans on here. You would think it’s the Bucs with the 2-14 record. Jeff, they are the Bucs, not the Yuks, you moron. You wouldn’t make it through one of those seasons. Folks like me have.

  21. Oddball Says:

Could it be that we finally get answer to the polarizing question that has divided JBF’ers since training camp?

  22. HC Grover Says:

I am weary of the Bowles Bucs. Just play the game. He is just boring.

  23. Buc4evr Says:

Hope Mayfield can play because Trask is not going to be ready for four quarters. Kyle is basically a statue and won’t hold up to the rush.

  24. Bobby Says:

Here is an interesting thought. Let’s say Bucs get into playoffs and Baker can’t play against Eagles opening wildcard game. Would Brady come back to start for the Bucs against the Eagles in playoffs!!??? Highly unlikely but i think if Bucs asked him. Brady would consider this…fun thought lol.

  25. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

I’d feel better if they had Darnold baking Baker up. Trask is not mobile and doesn’t have an NFL arm.

  26. Let em bake Says:

Baker will play. The only benefit in losing is Bucs avoid the brutal first place schedule looming next year. If they win this week, they face Baltimore, Detroit, San Fran, kc, buffalo. They’d have to go 5-1 in division to have a chance next year.

  27. D-Rome Says:

BTW, Justin Fields has won 4 of his last 5, been a lot more consistent and overall better than Baker over that span

You’re out of your mind if you think this! Over the last 5 games his completion percentage has been below 60%, he’s been averaging 209 yards per game, and has thrown 4 TDs and 3 INTs.

Over that same stretch Baker has completed 63% of his passes, averaged 264 yards per game, and has thrown 11 TDs and 3 INTs.

It’s too bad for you that facts get in the way of your narrative.

I was actually thinking the same thing today. Brady would probably do it too. Can you imagine the Panthers, the league if that happened. It would be crazy.

  29. Bojim Says:

Yep. Might be an interesting Sunday.

  30. UKBuccaneer Says:

Trask is a rookie, to all intents and purposes. Nobody wants to throw a guy to the wolves with a playoff place and divisional title on the line – especially against a better than advertised defense.

Pump baker full of painkillers and get him out there.

  31. Marine Buc Says:

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if Trask gets the nod and lights it up for 4 tds and 400 yards…

We would all be like – WTF was that?

    LOL!

  33. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

Hey Zoo……love to hear yourself talk, don’t you? I’m sure your post could have been 20 words or less and got your point across.

Which ever quarterback plays, I’ll be rooting for the Bucs. I’d prefer Mayfield just because I like the guy and he’s good for morale.

  34. Why Not Says:

If Baker is legitimately injured and not his best, he would be crazy to play on Sunday. At this point, Mayfield’s value is high, though if he starts on Sunday and wins, his stock will be higher, but a loss would be a huge knock. If the sore ribs affect his passing, Baker should rest and let Trask play. It’s a win/win. If the Bucs lose, it’s on Trask. If the Bucs win, Baker starts next week and still gets credit for the Bucs making the playoffs.

  35. m milligan Says:

Not gonna happen, Setting Trask up to fail is unmellow. BM will go down, let’s hope Trask has got his first look open. Somebodies stats said we should be able to run the ball. Can’t endure another game like that.
If they lose this game, WTF, caneallis is not a head coach.

  36. Bradenton Beach Buc Says:

Who ever starts, I hope they light up the scoreboard!

  37. Duke Says:

Rod Munch let me teach you a few things….Justin Fields is not a passer, only wants to run….he’s from Ohio Mistake University and the Buckeyes have NEVER EVER DVER had a QB amount to anything so he’s not an option

  38. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

A whole bunch of “duh”. Of course Mayfield will say Trask is ready if needed. What’s he gonna say, “Kyle stinks”?

Of course Trask will get reps with the 1s. If Mayfield can’t practice, somebody has to. Duh. Ace reporting right there.

If Mayfield is feeling good enough to go at game time, he’ll start. Practice or not. If the ribs bother him too much during the game, of course Trask will step in.

My fear on either scenario (a hurting Baker or fresh but raw Trask) is they’ll go run-heavy even more than usual. Hopefully it will be more creative than the b.s. between the tackles stuff.

They should.win this game regardless. Best case scenario Mayfield starts, we get a huge lead early and he comes out and Trask mops up so Mayfield can rest a bit

  39. Bosch Says:

I’ll bet the Bowel Movement doesn’t even know that Wolford is in the Roster.

  40. Tb bolts Says:

Go dawgs is still recovering from when Trask dropped 41 on his guys. Feel better bro it’ll get better with time.

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

If Kyle Trask plays great next week and let’s say he’s plays good in the playoffs rather we win or not. Then the question would be can he play like that for a whole season? We still wouldn’t know what kind of quarterback he would be next year that’s why bringing Baker Mayfield to this team was a bad idea and a waste of time. I don’t want another average quarterback next regardless who he is other than a rookie quarterback I wouldn’t mind it but not for a veteran!! Even though Trask would be playing as a rookie but the bucs coaches and GM hender his career with a washed up Brady last year and a average to below average quarterback in Baker Mayfield.

  42. beeej Says:

Bigger problem than who plays QB is who plays left guard. We seem to have the 2 worst in the NFL–Feiler allowed 12 pressures over 244 pass block reps, a 4.9% pressure rate allowed. (Top 5 guards have <1%) Stinnie is even worse–29 pressures over 404 pass block reps, a 7.2% pressure rate allowed

  43. DBS Says:

Tb bolts. 26 games the goalie has given up 3 goals . And he lost them the game last night again. Remember to keep pointing your finger a 1 person when a team gets that loss.

    ———–

Justin Fields over his last 5 games (news to oldest)…

    QBR: 66.0, 64.0, 18.0, 65.7, 41.6 – and they’ve won 4 of 5.

Baker over his last 5 games…

    QBR: 19.4, 90.9, 79.6, 54.7, 23.6 – and the Bucs have won 4 of 5.

So over the last 5, Baker has put up a complete trash game in 40% of his starts, vs Fields who did so in 20% of start’s. Also Baker’s 54.7 vs Atlanta came solely because of his last drive – which he gets credit for since he got it done in the clutch. Of course if hew as God-awful the rest of the game, the Bucs wouldn’t have needed a game winning drive, but in either case, the QBR still gives him credit as an average start there.

BTW, if you want to go back 6 games, Fields had a 72 QBR in that game, vs Bakers 30 QBR, which again was terrible.

So Baker has had VERY bad games in HALF of his last six starts, vs Fields, who has had 1 VERY bad start in that same timeframe.

In any case, as I’ve said repeatedly over the last few weeks, if Baker can get the teams into the playoffs, and WINS a home playoff game while playing well, then he should be back.

If the Bucs somehow miss the playoffs, and Baker is talking about how he’s injured and that affected his play… no thanks. He’s not that good, until he proves otherwise.

  45. David Says:

As the above comments, I told you the Baker fans are not the Bucs fans with their negative comments already on Trask. ” statue”, “weak arm”and son. Just imagine how sick these Baker fans are on possibility of Trask starting his first NFL. Why ?
Their boy might be benched due an injury not his performance and his trash fans can’t even support his back up to win for Baker/Bucs. Cause they are not Bucs fans. Even Baker is praising Trask in his readiness to start in case.
Playing one game good or bad will not make Trask a NFL starter or a draft bust but will give him a valuable experience for next season.

    Baker fans you are trash.

  46. WyomingJoe Says:

David: Your comments about Baker are so idiotic that no one takes you seriously anymore. I know, I know, it’s because you were the nerdy kid in high school who got his butt kicked everyday. Just like Tony Marks and others kick your butt on this site, lol.

Unfortunately for you and the other Cult of Trask Bois, Baker will play Sunday and play well in the win. So don’t worry, you’ll be able to cheap shot Baker next year, and the year after that, and the year after that…

Sorry to blow up your little world David but I am ALL FOR TRASK STARTING SUNDAY. So down the drain goes your latest nonsense

IF Baker is, according to reporting. very very very sore on Wed then its unlikely he will be fit as a fiddle on sunday.

Its Kyle’s time and I am all for it and calling for it. Keep Baker off the field.

Thats unfortunate for Kyle because If he sucks Sunday he will be a bench player for a loooooong time to come and even if he plays well – its the lowly Panthers and will mean little. You would no doubt claim all kinds of things but the rest of th NFl would say –

Meh asterisk – it was the Panthers 2-15.

Mush you are only rational to the kiddies. The grown ups here all know why you are trying DESPERATELY to limit The QB compaison to five games going into week 17. Because Justin has SUCKED most of the season. Justin fields is no longer a rookie either . He was supposed to ascend beginning this season but he went in the opposite direction

In another thread you are bashing Baker’s QBR ranked 16 as bad for this season but here you are pushing for Bucs to give up trade assets when ( Baker costs no picks or players) to get Justin fields at A QBR ranking of 22 (significanlty below Bake)r as a vast improvement over Baker. 58. Ed Says:

Baker has been very good in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately in most games he has been from average to bad. I’m very down on how the Bucs start all of their games. They sleepwalk through the first half and play sluggish offense.

When the games are on the line Mayfield is great. But there have been games where they have scored no or one touchdown in the first half. With leads the opponents are dropping back off of our receivers and Baker puts up yards and points. He has been great in hurryup and on 4th down passes.

Its difficult to evaluate his yardage and TV numbers because at least 3 or 4 games this season the Bucs were too far behind to come back and he produced a lot of yards and TD’s in those finishes.

I’d rather see them score 14-17 points in the first half and then have a lead. The Bucs have not led in many games at halftime this season.
