Jason Licht Dreams Of Mike Evans Ending Career With Bucs

January 21st, 2024

“Mutual understanding” to meet.

Future Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans could be a free agent this winter, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play for the Bucs again.

Just before training camp Evans made it clear he wanted to be paid top-shelf money like most top receivers. Problem is, Evans, 30, is about at the point of where most receivers reach their expiration date.

The numbers he put up this year, Evans sure doesn’t appear to be running on fumes.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has said he looks forward to Evans finishing his career with the Bucs.

In a deep dive on how Licht made Evans his very first draft selection in 2014 as Bucs general manager, Licht told Jenna Laine of ESPN that he and Evans’ reps will talk turkey in the not-too-distant future.

“It would mean everything for the franchise, ownership, all of us,” Licht said of Evans spending his whole career with the Bucs. “Mike and I — our relationship is still the same and has never changed. And we’ve got a mutual understanding of when we’re going to begin talking.” …

Licht’s dream is Evans finishing his career as a Buccaneer, pointing to Ring of Honor and Pro Football Hall of Famers Rondé Barber and Derrick Brooks, who spent their entire careers with the Bucs. It is possible with the team no longer carrying the burden of $75 million in dead cap money like in 2023.

Evans and Licht have a strong relationship. In fact, Licht noted how close his kids are to Evans. Close enough that Licht said his kids regularly pester him about re-signing Evans.

Bucs should render their best afford to retain Mike E. than any other player. It would be a permanent mark on the GM record if he lets Mike E. walk.

  2. David Says:

Let’s just hope Baker watched this game and gained a valuable lesson on how qb plays can directly contribute to win or lose an important game as Jordan Love lost a winnable game tonight at last minutes.

Jordan Love threw two bad picks with one with his team ahead and the one to tie or win the game cross the field.
Well he is an inexperience qb. There would be no excuses for Baker to produce the same errors as Jordan tomorrow. Why ?
    Remember Baker fans; Experience.

  3. MadMax Says:

ol david always knocking Baker every chance he gets…sad, just sad, must be a miserable life you live.

  4. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Of coarse Mike Evans has made Mayfield look better. There’s not a stinking QB in the entire NFL that Mike Evans wouldn’t make look better. And I would wager that the goat Tom Brady himself would say the same thing. Some things just go without saying. They just don’t need to be said. Mike Evans rules. Thanks.

  5. BAN DAVID Says:

Once again David takes the time to be toxic on this website. Get a life!

  6. ATLBuc Says:

These Baker bois are soooo sensitive!!!

  7. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

And to say there are 4 Bucs that must be signed is the understatement of the year. Somehow the Bucs must figure a way to keep Evans, Mayfield, Winfield, and David. These are the must keep guys. Diva would be nice to have as well. Minus the drama.
    Go Bucs!

  8. optimisticbucsfan Says:

I hope people take this logically without emotion…

    Baker is #1
    Winfield #2
Wirfs has one more yr but it would be cheaper to extend him next yr
    LVD?
Evans – if he wants $25mil/3 or 4 yrs – no

    Don’t be emotional. He’s a Buc ROH. A HOF.

His path may be elsewhere. That’s ok.

    ………………………………..

Baker has thrown 2 picks in the same game ONCE all year

  10. David Says:

Okay Baker fans: Here you go requesting the GM pays your qb first than Mike E.
Well. Let’s see if Baker deserves your kindness.

You have been telling us: Baker M. > Brock P.

Baker 1st overal pick vs Brock 262 overal pick.
Okay you are 100% correct on papers.

Well, here is Baker’s another chance to prove it on the field that he is a better qb than Brock while enhancing his journeyman stats to Bucs Top QB1 by doing do. Uh, wait he has to beat a good playoffs team, Lions first before he gets a shot at Brock. Can he ? I doubt it but I hope so. Go Bucs

  11. Don'tBmad Says:

David is a true clown folks…..a true clown. Everything he’s said all season long(doom and gloom) has bit him in the ass. You just know he’s one of those leftoid clowns that think they know what’s best for everyone else

  12. itzok Says:

receivers dont expire until 33-34, give him a 3 year deal he is one of the best receivers in the league

  13. heyjude Says:

One of the best picks Jason Licht made – Mike Evans, 2014! It’s time for him to be paid like other receivers.

Evans made Johnny-QB look good in TX and every single QB since. He is the guy. If he goes onto another team, you can bet he will be playing to win for that team. And that team could be the Texans, Cowboys. His home state.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Bring back the lawn chairs … ‘Somehow the Bucs must figure a way to keep Evans, Mayfield, Winfield, and David. These are the must keep guys.’

Respect your priorities, but apparently we see it differently. Wirfs is #1 priority IMO. Yes we can sign him to a 5th year for $18.6 mil, BUT … we’d have to carry that whole $18.6 mil against our salary CAP, and that’d keep us from signing at least 1 or 2 other key guys. Best strategy (for us & Tristan) is to sign him to a long-term deal (4-5 years) at his Market Value ($25.6 mil) with 3 years guaranteed, but reduced for 2024 to say $10 mil to knock down our salary CAP hit. That $15 mil saving would let us re-sign LVD, McLaughlin (another high priority) plus several other less expensive players.

Winfield is #2 priority. His Market Value is $18.5 mil, but he may command more. He’s not only an All-Pro, but he’s also a key LEADER on this team who energizes others. My feeling is that he’s saved at least 2 games all by himself. No way we can afford to let him get away.

Evans is #3 priority. Yes he’s 30 but he’s playing like he’s 22 (all 17 games, over 80% of our offensive snaps, and his 13 TDs represented almost half of our 28 passing TDs). His Market Value is up there ($23.8 mil) but that kind of production is worth it. Does anyone calling for Baker Mayfield to be re-signed really believe that he’d have done even close to as well as he did WITHOUT Mike Evans?

McLaughlin is #4 priority. I don’t think JBFers REALLY appreciate what Chase accomplished this year. He hit on 29 of 31 attempts (93.5%), and was 7 of 8 from 50 yards & beyond (plus missed ZERO extra point attempts). That’s incredible. His kicking was the margin of victory in 3 games minimum, and it kept us in several others. Guessing that around $5 mil should do it.

Lavonte David #5 priority. No way Bucs will re-sign Devin White IMO. Take away LVD & we’re down TWO starting ILBs, not to mention we’d be losing a ton of leadership experience. Lavonte’s not only still playing at an incredibly high level, but he also deserves to retire as a Buc as much as any Buc who’s ever played for us. Guessing that around $5 mil at this point in his career should do it.

Baker Mayfield is #6 priority IMO. I like what he’s done this year, and I love the leadership that he’s brought to this team. BUT … Baker’s no Patrick Mahomes; he NEEDS those other 5 pieces above to be a winning QB next year & beyond (quality OLine, quality WRs; quality defense; quality kicker). Without ALL those pieces above this year, he & the Bucs have a losing record, no playoffs, and oh ya, we’d have a new coaching staff next year.

Reality however is that Jason Licht, with a lot of input from our coaching staff I’m sure, will set our priorities. Not us. Bucs will still be VERY strapped for salary CAP once again, and there’ll be a lot of hard decisions to make. And since all 6 of the guys above are free agents, competing offers will be a huge factor. But that’s only a concern AFTER we beat the Lions, then San Fran, and the AFC winner to take home another Super Bowl championship. It’s all within our grasp. We got this. Go Bucs.

  15. Allbuccedup Says:

Buyer beware on Baker could be one year wonder or maybe hes turned his career around. Maybe tag him to see to which Baker he is.

  16. PSL Bob Says:

Class act. Extraordinary receiver. He’s been one of a few truly brilliant stars (see Ring of Honor names) on this team over the decades. I sure hope we’re able to keep him in red & pewter.

  17. Dom Says:

Mike Evans was our offenses TD production this season. Without Evans we aren’t scoring TD’s at a high enough rate to win games. He was an All Pro WR this season. He’s priority 1. There is no emotion in this. Do we not understand that Mike Evans is going to finish top 10 in all time receiving yards and TD’s? Replacing an All-Pro WR and the greatest offensive weapon in franchise history is much harder than replacing an average QB. Baker would be cheeks without Evans on this team

    Priority List

    Mike Evans
    AW Jr
    Baker
    LVD
    Money Chase McLaughlin

Everyone else can pretty much walk or sign for vet minimum

  18. BucsFan Says:

Wirfs is Priority one as he is Bucs most valuable asset.

  19. YaYa Winfield Says:

Allbuccedup – lol, tag him? How do you tag a guy that signed a one year contract?

  20. YaYa Winfield Says:

My bad, I guess you are correct. For some reason I didn’t think that was possible in Mayfield’s case. Tagging Mayfield would too expensive though imo and I love the guy.

  21. Hodad Says:

Since Baker is following Tom Brady maybe he should follow him in another way. Take less money so Jason can sign the Mike Evans’s of the team. Hey Baker you want 40 million a year? we can’t afford Evans, you’ll be throwing to a rookie. Take 25 million, Evans is back. What would Tom do?

  22. ModHairKen Says:

Evans will be re-signed. Wirfs will be extended. Winfield will be re-signed. David will, if he does not retire. Baker will be given a very reasonable offer. But someone will offer him more. Then the question is, what will he do?

  23. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Bucs will have the money. 2023 dead cap money $80 mil, 2024 falls to $22 mil.
Overall salary cap in 2024 to increase $15 mil. Of course some salaries will be restructured.
Bakers play has made this season above expectations. No One expected the Bucs to win this many games, let alone win the division and yet here we are 2nd game into the playoffs!! YES its January 21 and the Bucs are still playing!! Feel sorry for the people who can’t enjoy it.
Riding this band wagon until its over. Just like 31 other teams will do.

Funny dream. I dream of a long legged wahine (polynesian girl) relaxing, hardly dressed, under a coconut tree on Oahu’s north shore. Oh yea – she’s also sipping a tequila shaved ice.! Now that’s a dream.

Mahomes NEEDS an online and a hof te, to be as good as he his as well, not saying baker is mahomes but to act like mahomes does everything with no help is laughable

  26. ModHairKen Says:

Lt. Dan, head west! Stop in SF next week and console Lynch after the Bucs whomp that 49er a$$!!!!

Detroit is soft. Once they get behind, they will fold.

  27. Marky Mark Says:

The Glazers (Man U) and the Rays owner (Rowdies) both own the other kind of Football teams. MLS lured Beckham and Messi over with team ownership stakes. Why not do the same with Evans so you can pay him less. Man U stock is worth a lot. Lebron owns a piece if Liverpool FC and the Red Sox.

  28. David Says:

    Make it happen!!

  29. orlbucfan Says:

ME13 and LVD stuck it out here when the Bucs did their usual stinking up the place. You all don’t think for one second other teams weren’t trying to grab them? Relieved to read this one, Joe. In Licht I Trust! Bucs will be a monster team next season, no matter what happens today. Works for me. 🙂

  30. Beeej Says:

If we let Baker walk, I’m not seeing how we have a competent QB next year, and if I’m ME13, with mebbe 2 years left, I’m walking

  31. K_bassuka Says:

Most QBs can accomplish what Maybefield did if you keep Evans around, that’s one of the reasons I don’t think the team should sign Barker to a long term deal cause it will prevent the Bucs to sign core players and allow Bucs greats to walk.

The Bucs should focus on signing
Winfield #1 will be hard to replace him
Evans #2 proven over and over to make average QBs look good
    Wirfs #3 resign him now
Maybefield #4 as a bridge QB
LVD #5 let White walk and keep around to help the replacement

  32. Marky Mark Says:

There is a logic flaw in the Mayfield must have Evans to thrive argument. Evans and Godwin have been doubled all season. Baker simply went to someone else. Somebody had to catch those 4k yards and 28 TD,s. Bakers perfect score against Packers, Jaguars, and Eagles 2 came after Evans got his 1k so Baker could stop trying to force it into a double and juzt hit the open dood. Evans dropped a TD pass put right on his palms in Eagles 2. It was Godwin who was aware enough to see the blitz coming and work with Baker who also saw the blitz to turn around and come back for the pass thrown by Baker with a defender all in his face. Fact is the QB touches the ball first for roughly half the game and can fumble, int, or get sacked and lise the game in a hurry. The QB is the single mist important player on the field and that is why they get paid the most. BTW Baker owns Burrows in head to head competition.

  33. ModHairKen Says:

I’ve been a Baker supporter since they signed him. He’s played better than ii hoped he would. He’s been the teammate I expected he would. His future here is bright.

But, if he goes, the team will survive.

Evans and David, on the other hand, have F’ing EARNED the right to finish here on their terms. Anyone who does not believe in loyalty can FO. You have no integrity.

  34. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Mike may be the most underrated player in all of football (outside of Tampa) it would be foolish to not sign him. He would probably get his 1000 and 10 TD’s even it was Trask under center.

  35. WyomingJoe Says:

I love it when Baker Haters keep talking out their butts. Take a look at Baker’s career you morons. From the day he was drafted he never played in a stable environment for more than a year, enduring a countless parade of HC’s and OC’s. How could any young QB reach his potential in such a toxic environment? Mahomes had the same HC and OC. So did Allen, Jackson, Burrows and EVERY OTHER QB. Yet, despite his disadvantages, Baker played on a very high level in 2018 and 2020. And now he’s beginning to flourish within the Bucs organization.

And yet, the usual Haters still call him a one-year wonder!

Baker has said repeatedly that he wants to keep playing for the Bucs. But when I hear these vile “fans” constantly giving him Back-handed “compliments” (the David’s, Munchers, ALTbucs, etc) a part of me thinks that maybe he should move on next year.

But I hope that doesn’t happen.

    Baker Haters can shove it!

    Keep winning Bucs.

    Keep winning Baker.

  36. WyomingJoe Says:

    D.R.

As usual I agree totally with your post. I think your priorities and the subsequent reality checks are spot on!!!

Having said that, while agreeing with you it hacks me off at the NFL!!! Again I support the concept of the “salary cap” completely. Not everyone does because they justifiably point to the fact no more dynasties and a lot of mediocre football. I accept that criticism but am not worried by that. If a team can only put a couple of great seasons together but the entire league is more competitive it’s a worthwhile price…for me…as they say YMMV.

What DOES hack me off is the solution you provide for Wirfs. Not because I disagree but because I DO agree and what hoops and convolutions just to sign ONE player and MORTGAGE the future. Multiply that by a half dozen players and the potential for CAP HELL increases exponentially.

Simple solution. Make the salary cap a freaking HARD cap with none of the accounting tricks available. Everybody gets X dollars a season…if they negotiate bonus perfomance clauses, those count against the next seasons cap IF realized, but no more than a year’s worth of cap hell should be permitted to be negotiated.

I read you a lot D.R. because you have taken the time to educate yourself in all the arcane rules of the NFL Salary Cap. There are a couple of other posters like you here whom I also respect but most of us are just too lazy or uninterested to pay the price to LEARN all this stuff.

So I conclude D.R. with gratitude….you read and learn this crap and I do not have to…LOL THX.

No more so than the Baker haters who troll this board. I agree there could have been a balance to all this but it’s a sports blog and so hyperbole is king!

If your point is we shouldn’t respond to trolls I get it. Mea Culpa I’ve responded far too much too NE and even David but I’m trying to do better.

I just respect SCOREBOARD!!! Talk is cheap. Show me the money…or in Bowles and Mayfield’s case show me the playoffs. Once the Bucs have escaped Cap hell IF they ever do…then it’s show me another SB!

  39. Marky Mark Says:

The argument that Evans makes average QB,s look good has a few holes in it. 1. Brady was the GOAT and his favorite receiver was Godwin not Evans. 2. Only Brady won playoff games and a super bowl. The other average QB,s Evans make look good did not get into the playoffs for almost a decade. 3. Like it or not this average QB Baker just trashed a Pennsylvania team in the playoffs for the second time in his career. Baker will tell anyone who will listen that he plays better under
the pressure of elimination games. So far he has backed it up. Jalen wilted under the pressure and Eagles fans are furious. You can,t teach people to remain calm under fire. It is a unique skill set. Spock says Baker is way more valuable than Evans. Bakes wil! Just hit another rookie just like he has Palmer and Otten all year. Hurts will never get better at performing under pressure. You got it or you don,t.

  41. lanshark Says:

    Several Things:

#1) did ANY of you guys hear Terry Bradshaw on Fox in the pre-game for GB/SF? He said, quote: “OF COURSE he’s got good weapons around him… there isn’t a good QB in the league who does not!”. He was talking about Brock Purdy, but his point is valid. It’s a TEAM game.

#2) Much as I despise the current Browns front office, Andrew Berry is VERY good at salary cap management – we need to take a couple pages from his book. He restructures deals, does a lot of “bonus” deals, deals with ‘voidable years’, one-time payments, and other creative stuff to get the best team he can on the field. Yes, Licht’s 80M dead cap was a huge anchor, but that falls to 22M this year, with a 15M increase, so net he’s down 7M, and overall he’s up 73M from 2023. He should be able to find a way to structure the finances.

  42. Alanbucsfan Says:

I can’t imagine any scenario where Mayfield and Evans play somewhere else next year

  43. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I hope Licht can do it. Honestly, I’d be totally ok with this exact roster plus a RB , edge rusher and draft picks next year. Should be enough cap for that.

  44. Deuceswild78 Says:

Mike has to be number 1 after wirfs…. no Evans no point in bringing back baker at a extremely high pay

  45. Bobby Says:

Marky Mark … ‘There is a logic flaw in the Mayfield must have Evans to thrive argument. Evans and Godwin have been doubled all season. Baker simply went to someone else. Somebody had to catch those 4k yards and 28 TD,s.’

And BECAUSE Evans & Godwin draw so much attention, other receivers are either singled-covered or not at all. Yes Baker threw for 4,044 yards this year & 28 TDs this year. Of that …

    o Evans … 136 targets – 79 catches – 1255 yds – 13 TDs
    o Godwin … 130 targets – 83 catches – 1024 yds – 2 TDs

That’s over half of Baker’s stats from just those 2 guys. Now add in 3 more …

    o White … 70 targets – 64 catches – 549 yds – 3 TDs
    o Palmer … 68 targets – 39 catches – 385 yds – 3 TDs
    o Otton … 67 targets – 47 catches – 455 yds – 4 TDs

That’s a pretty good receiving corps there, and much better IMO than what Patrick Mahomes had to work with. Reason? We paid Evans & Godwin handsomely, and 3 of those 5 are on their initial contract. Chiefs OTOH paid Mahomes, in the belief that he can keep their passing game production up without quality receivers. Yes they went 11-6 this year, but their offense fell from #1 to #15. Their defense is what kept them relevant.

  52. Marky Mark Says:

Good Karma sign for me. My other Football team Werder Bremen just beat Bayern Munich in Munich 1-0. There is no salary cap in the Bundesliga and Bayern massively outspends Werder. I was stationed in Bremen as an Army M1A1 Tank commander. I used to take the train down to the matches at Weser Stadion with my German neighbors. MarineBuc is not the only veteran on this board. As much as i respected the Marinez who trained with me at Armor officer Basic at Fort Knox Jarhead Buc
has been nothing but wrong all season. Fact is the season is already a success and we are playing with house money today. Play hard, fast and loose. The Detroit Kittens weakness is their secondary. Let Cool hand Baker rip their secondary apart.

  53. Marky Mark Says:

A lesser QB such as the pre Brady average QBs would have continued to try to force the ball in to Evans and Godwin as opposed to just finding the open guy. Those guys got way to many Ints.

  54. Marky Mark Says:

Buc1987 maybe that is why in those many years the Bucs never sniffed the playoffs till Brady got here.

  55. Defense Rules Says:

lanshark … ‘Yes, Licht’s 80M dead cap was a huge anchor, but that falls to 22M this year, with a 15M increase, so net he’s down 7M, and overall he’s up 73M from 2023.’

You left out the ‘minor detail’ that JL had to restructure a number of contracts in 2023 to just meet salary CAP. It’s THOSE contracts that bite us in the butt in 2024. We didn’t bring on 13 rookies for the fun of it; we had no choice.

Our 2024 salary CAP is just as bad (if not worse) than our 2023 was. Our big issue is that we only have 34 players under contract, with only $48.7 mil to re-sign FAs AND add the remainder of what we need to make up a 53-man roster plus Practice Squad. And of those 34, Ryan Jensen & Russell Gage count (both spent the year on IR, are costly, and probably can’t help us next year). Plus of the other 32 under contract, several have very large CAP Hits to go along with some very large Dead CAP values. Limits JL’s flexibility to restructure or release them. But still, that’s all a discussion for after our Super Bowl victory.

  56. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

So 2 receivers Evans and Godwin account for 2279 yards and 15 tds for over 50% of Bakers production and a fanboi questions the validity that Evans made him look better than he really is.
Leave it to fanbois to ignore Baker’s CAREER performance and record to prop him up to be better than he really is.
His ENTIRE career has been a model of how to be consistently inconsistent.
This season has been a continuation of that model.
He has been more down than up this season and the team at times has won inspite of his inconsistent play.
Plus he’s been the benefactor of some great breaks like the Panthers game.
I don’t believe in talking about coulda happened if it didn’t but had those breaks bounced the other way, that great game in Philly would’ve never happened because Baker played horribly in that game and it doesn’t matter if he was injured, which he was he still played horribly.
Tampa Bay has never developed a qb they drafted who earned a second contract and as such has lost way more games than won and OUR only two Championships have been by qbs drafted by other teams.
Kansas City on the other hand drafted Patrick Mahomes, developed him to be even better than he was in college and have been in the playoffs, AFC Championship games and Super Bowls since they did because he is CONSISTENTLY great.
I’m not a Traskie by any measurement but when I saw the change from preseason 2021 when he truly sucked and couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn to this pre season where he looked like a real NFL qb with great command of our offense I saw the chance for us to have what we’ve never had before.
Now of course Blowles went with the safer option of experience in order to save his job.
Anybody who thinks that Mayfield is a priority to sign over Evans, Wirfs, Winfield and David want the Bucs to continue to be inconsistent.

  57. A Bucs Fan Says:

Mike is going for the all time 1000 yard records. He needs two more seasons to own the consecutive streak and 5 more to have the most all time period. I think a 3 year 80 million dollar deal would be perfect and then if his body holds up resign him for two.

Mike is probably looking for a 5 year 115 million deal.

  58. vadertime Says:

Mike Evans had several drop yesterday including the ball bouncing of his hands for a Lions interception. Throughout this season he has dropped about half the balls thrown his way and some of them were very catchable balls. He is going to turn 31 and that means a few more good years at best. I would not go out on a limb to give him a big contract. We have other needs we need to fill on defense and in the offensive line. Bring Baker back. Give Antoine Winfield a nice contract. Negotiate with Mike Evans team. Fire Bowles. Go Bucks.
