Derrick Brooks Talks Baker Mayfield’s Future

January 29th, 2024

It’s been 15 years since Derrick Brooks was a Hall of Fame linebacker for the Buccaneers, so Joe feels the need to remind young readers what a stud Brooks was.

Then he jumped into media and business and later into his role as an appeals officer hired by the NFL and the NFL Players Association about 10 years ago to determine on-field discipline.

While balancing all kinds of things, Brooks has managed to maintain relationships with current Tampa Bay players and he doesn’t miss Bucs games. So Joe pays close attention when Brooks speaks about his beloved team.

What would Brooks do with Baker Mayfield? He would re-hire him for at least a few years and be aggressive about signing him.

“I think Baker answered that question as he can be the next quarterback here for the next few years for the Bucs. Now, that obviously comes with a budget price on what that is,” Brooks said on Brooks and Beckles.

“I really hope that the Bucs go down this road of really pursuing him. I really hope Baker understands the greater value is not just the economic piece in this case with him and figure out where he stands in that. Now, I say the ‘answer’ in terms of this: I think it’s a bridge. Do I think 10-year answer with Baker at quarterback? No. Do I think it’s 3 to 5? Yes.”

Joe wonders how the Baker haters will react to this.

Brooks didn’t say what his “budget price” is for Mayfield, but the implication was there is a limit for Mayfield for the good of the organization.

Several years ago, Jared Goff signed a long-term deal with the Rams before he was traded to Detroit. Goff got about $33 million per year for four years. Given that the franchise tag for a quarterback will be about $35 million this season, Joe suspects Mayfield and his team will be looking for Goff money.

Baker will be 29 before the start of the season. He’s little (6’1 – 215) and brittle (injury history). Baker can likely play a 2-3 years before injuries mount.

Bucs offer $33×3 ($15M bonus / $50M guaranteed) with an option for year 4

    Everyone wins.

  5. Bucfan Says:

If Baker wants a supporting cast around him, $25 Mil should do it.
Be greedy and look out for below 500% seasons.

  6. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I don’t know what the difference is between 3 to 5 year solution at QB and a 10 year one. If we think he’s good enough to take our roster into contention for the promised land for the next 3 to 5 seasons, why wouldn’t he be for years after that?

I think what Derrick MEANS is that we should sign him for a 3 to 5 year contract, so if he fizzles out, it doesn’t hurt our cap quite as much. This would make him the starter for the next few years, so it’s by no means a “bridge” QB situation.

  7. Nicholas Carlson Says:

He’s obviously the 3 to 5 year answer. Baker is what, already the 3rd or 4th best QB the Bucs have had? After Brady, after Brad? I’m not super familiar with Doug Williams.

  8. BakerFan Says:

Mock drafts have Bucs taking Brian Thomas out of LSU 6’4″ 205lbs. If that happens it probably means Evans is gone. Would Mayfield move on or stay put if Evans is gone?

I think they will keep Evans and they need an Edge Rusher and offensive line talent more than any thing.

Mayfield probably needs to move on. Bucs have Trask, a proven commodity in some guys eyes for peanuts and a clipboard experience.

  9. WyomingJoe Says:

SlyPirate: Baker hasn’t really missed that many games due to injury in his career. Just compare the number of games he’s missed against QB’s like Jackson, Burrows and Rogers and most of the other QB’s in the NFL. However, he should have missed the 2021 season. Playing with that type of shoulder injury cost him his future in Cleveland – even though it’s a messed up organization.

  10. BakerFan Says:

Mock drafts have the Bucs taking Brian Thomas of LSU. WR 6’4″ 205lbs…. If that happens does that mean that Evans is gone.

I think they will re sign Evans. They need real help at Edge Rusher and Offensive Line.

As far as Mayfield, best if he moves on and signs a good 4 to 5 year contract. Bucs have Trask to backfill with good experience holding a clipboard and is cheap, this will make several fans happy.

  11. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Budget price? Sounds almost insulting. Baker, take less money so others can get paid even though you play the most important position in the NFL by far.

GTFO. I’ll say it D Brook’s face too. Budget my ass.

Winfield isn’t taking a “budget” deal neither is ME Evans.

Pay the man! Draft a WR early to replace ME Evans.

  12. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Baker 2023 had 7 games throwing for less than 225 yards. Terrible games. He only threw for 300 yards 3 times. yet he still threw for over 4,000 yards with a decent TD/INt. With an improved line he will be better. Agree with Brooks we should sign Baker for a few years. At what price, like Brooks, how do I know.
    Bucs will handle it.
    Looking forward to 2024!

  13. stpetebucfan Says:

It’s fun debating and suggesting, ultimately I have faith in Licht/Spytek and the front office. The Glazers are not cheap…they spend the max allowed by the NFL.

So…in a fantasy world…MY preference…and suspicion of what might happen.

Nobody is going to offer ME or Mayfield a deal that time sensitive. They will be offered “some” time to consider their options…Sooo given player needs and team needs….

JL immediately locks up the future…give Winfield and Wirfs their long term deals first. These IMHO are the only absolute must retain.

Depending on the structure of THEIR contracts Jason will know how much he has to play with. THEN they go to ME and Baker and do the best deals possible
They negotiate with LVD and sign him.

IF they can time things right they can show the 3 enough love and the promise of keeping a competitve team on the field. See what kind of discounts any or all of those three might agree to accept.

NONE of the are poor!!! ALL of them want respect. Somewhere in the middle is a sweet spot. IE Baker might not hold the Bucs up for ransom if he sees ME signed and the knowledge that the Bucs will continue to improve the OL.

I do not think the loss of Canales means squat to Baker. He might miss him as a friend but he’s not essential to Baker’s career. A GREAT offensive line and a better run game are in BAKER’s long term career interest. IMHO Baker is a Brady type when it comes to winning…he’ll chip in with a discount..,if ME13 sees that will he join.

LVD may be considering retirement or perhaps going to his hometown Miami.
BUT if the Bucs show him another chance to win he may reup for another season as well.

Bottom line for me is that Jason Licht has earned my respect…I mean TOTALLY.

Any GM can survive the JW draft pick and the resulting fiasco is pretty dang good. Now let the chirping begin…he got lucky and Brady became available.

OK that’s part of it…but don’t yammer about Billy Belicheat a coach with the same record as Todd Bowles when he was without Brady. Getting a guy in the sixth round is just as lucky if not more so than getting him in FA.

  14. Bojim Says:

Like to keep Baker. He has chemistry with Mike so he may use that as a condition. Plus he needs to use Godwin more.

  15. Lt. Dan Says:

Who can ever forget that game in Tampa when Brooks spied “Starship 7” Mike Vick. Brooks owned him.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

I’m with Mr. Brooks on this one. I can see Baker as a 3-5 year QB for the Bucs, primarily because we’re relatively young, and his leadership & ‘moxie’ is valuable. But I still see him as a middle-of-the-pack starting QB in most other respects.

o Finished #18 in the NFL with 64.1% completion percentage.
o Finished #14 with 7.1 Passing Yards per Attempt.
o Finished #18 with 4044 Total Passing Yards.
    o Finished #10 with 28 Passing TDs.
o Finished tied for #6 with 10 INTs.
    o Finished #18 with 188 Passing 1st Downs.
o Finished tied for #12 with 40 Sacks Taken.

Bucs offense finished the season ranked #20 with 348 Points Scored (20.5 PPG average). We ranked #10 in 3rd Down Percentage (41.5%), but #30 in Red Zone TD Percentage (44.9%).

Literally ALL of those parameters fall in the #10 – #20 range. That’s pretty much the definition of middle-of-the-pack. Reality IMO is that Baker NEEDS a strong supporting cast to be successful. Pay too much for him and can kiss that strong supporting cast hasta la vista.

So what’s he worth? I think Brooks’ idea of ‘budget price’ would reasonably fall in the $25 – $30 mil range, for maybe a 3-4 year contract with about half of it guaranteed. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to throw in some incentives like ‘make the playoffs’ or whatever.

    ——
Why would we give up Mike for Baker?? Baker never carried the team to any victories. It was always team collected effort whenever the Bucs won, offense only averaged under 20 pts a game. Do you really want to sink all that money into a average / above average QB over a hall of famer who made Mayfields year? Think about it. This is a team where the best player is not the QB. So don’t pay him as he is.

  18. WhinnyJoe Says:

Baker should hold out for 50 mil because the Bucs has a bunch of meanies in the comment sections

  19. Bobby M. Says:

The annual number doesn’t tell the true story of the negotiations. Players typically prioritize the most guaranteed money over annual avg. They know the guaranteed money is really all they can bank on, the rest of it is fluff….performance bonuses…inflated salaries late in the contract…etc. Probably the same for Evans and Winfield.

  20. Student of the Game Says:

Defense Rules, name the QB that rates higher than Mayfield that doesn’t have a strong supporting cast. Look at the support Purdy has? Mahommes? All the better ones have a better team around them, except maybe Allen. It’s the ultimate team game. Great rookie QBs are rare. Rookie receivers and most defensive positions are no longer rookies after 5-6 games. Draft those, not QB.

  31. Chacho Says:

Have solidified his argument for a big pay day and they can’t pay someone on good faith that he will improve next season with accuracy. He can hold out next summer and get reupped with higher pay and more guaranteed longevity if he improves. At the end of the day there’s no guarantee that he will improve with new coaching staff and offense in place when the last offense focused on mitigating the potential liability the qb position could be.

  33. Chacho Says:

What were you watching this year. Gardener Johnson said it best before he sealed the Bucs season picking off mayfield. The Bucs have the best wr core in the league but they have baker at qb. Improvement to the offensive line and they can have more options on how this offense wil perform

    —–

The point should be obvious but since it isn’t.

You can’t let Mike go on the basis of getting his replacement in the draft that you don’t know you’re going to get.

So saying “if that happens then mIke is gone” is backwards

Unless you are in Back to the Future.

The decision to sign Mike or not will have nothing to do with the draft but the price tag regardless of what happens in the draft or mock drafts.

  35. Let em bake Says:

We may never know what baker could get…. Bucs have first shot at him. Other teams have to wait until free agency window opens…

  36. Esteban85 Says:

Yeah I think Baker earned a 3 year gig for 27-30 mill a year. The fact that he pulled a Jordan Love and tossed a pick in the most important drive of the season lost him a few million a year. Baker obviously understands the importance of taking team friendly contracts and building a team around him. We need Mike, we need a Gibbs type RB and we need a mauler center or guard. I hope both Bake & Mike get signed on team friendly deals laden with incentives.

  37. BakerFan Says:

    Tony Marks Says:

Teams make that decision ALL THE TIME, we will let this player go because we feel we can get that in the draft….. again it is a mock draft, I don’t agree with it because ME should finish his career as a Buc and the Bucs I feel have bigger needs, keep what you know especially with Evans.

I use to play fantasy football and had Evans, he never really ever produced for me, like others did on a week to week basis, but he is still a great football receiver and replacing him will be hard.

  38. Rod Munch Says:

Sign a 3-year deal if you want, but just make sure you can get out of it after 1-year if Baker implodes. That’s not bashing Baker, that’s just the reality of guys who were really bad for a long time (and Baker was the worst QB in football for over 2 years) and then suddenly have a career year, most of the time they turn into pumpkins. However it’s not a 100% bust rate, which is why you’d bring him back for another year yet have the option to keep him.

  39. Allbuccedup Says:

Anything over 25 mil and 2 to 3 years is too much. But thats only my opinion and that doesn’t mean a whole lot apparently.

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

    PAY DA MAN !!!!!!!

  41. Defense Rules Says:

BakerFan … I used TEAM passing yardage to get that #18 ranking. And you’re right, since some teams used 2 (or more) QBs during the season, even though they had more Passing Yards as a TEAM, those individual QBs didn’t get as many yards as Baker. Of course, they wouldn’t have had as many games as Baker either.

As far as individual QBs go, Baker ranked #9, predominantly because he played in more games (17) than some ranked below him with fewer yards because of injuries such as Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins, Lamar Jackson, etc.

The info BTW came from NFL.com. I’m sure you’ve heard of them. I believe they’re the keeper of the official stats for the NFL, but might be wrong there.

  42. Defense Rules Says:

Student of the Game … ‘Great rookie QBs are rare. Rookie receivers and most defensive positions are no longer rookies after 5-6 games. Draft those, not QB.’

I agree with you about rookie QBs (most of the really good ones go to mediocre teams that are rebuilding, and it seems to take 2-3 years for them to really ball out). Bucs draft #26 I believe; not gonna get a franchise QB at that position more than likely.

I think Bowles is trying to follow the San Fran model. Build a great supporting cast on offense, turn it into a well-oiled machine, and you don’t need a high-cost QB like Patrick Mahomes to run it IF you also have a great defense. San Fran ended the year ranked #3 on offense and #3 on defense.

Purdy played in 16 games and went 12-4 (not too shabby for last man drafted). But in those 16 games he threw for 4280 yards with a 69.4% completion rate, with 31 Passing TDs against only 11 INTs, plus 2 lost fumbles. Quite impressive IMO, but can’t help but wonder how he would’ve done as starting QB of the Panthers. Having a quality supporting cast is critical for every starting QB.

  43. GhostofBrady Says:

What’s the floor and the ceiling? Baker’s floor is 2 years guaranteed and ceiling is 4 years guaranteed (5-year deal with 5th year as low dead cap but high roster bonus option). Evans floor is 1 year and his ceiling is 3 years. I think the team can work with that. Let’s not forget Godwin is in his last contract year too. They have to extend him after 2024. Godwin and Cade Otton were 3rd Down and got to have it for Baker.

I think $50M guaranteed for 2 years would be insulting to Baker. Anything with incentives is insulting. The incentive is executing the last year option. He can basically take the $35M franchise tag in 2024, let the Tampa suffer and lose players to the cap and become a free agent in 2025. Easily demanding $15M as a bridge QB for another team running WCWZ offense if he flakes out or sign with another club long-term big contract if he balls again. Tampa will have to for over $44M to tag him again in 2025 and Baker won’t be lenient on cap money for another tag. Or pay him even more for long-term since you got two bites out the apple with no long-term guarantee.

Anything less than what Carr (never won a playoff in 10 years) or Cousin (only 1 playoff win in 10 years) got for 3 years guaranteed would be dereliction of duty by his agent. If they want Baker and cap room to keep Godwin and Evans for 1-2 more years, then it’s a 3-5 year deal that is team friendly by spreading Baker’s cap hit in future years. Invest in Baker or don’t. He don’t need to prove anything anymore. He does need to look at taking mid-tier money to help the team. Carr and Cousin contracts are mid-tier.

  44. BakerFan Says:

  50. Chris Says:

@Bucsmarley, Baker has had 3 very good seasons, one injury riddled season, and a half a season with the dumpster fire Panthers and Ben freaking McAdoo as OC before he had a high ankle sprain. The impati3nt Panthers benched Baker after the ankle sprain healed, and he jetted for 5he Rams and had an OK finish to the year. The fact that he’s had manag3d to put up 2 really good years in Cleveland is nothing short of incredible. So dismiss him if you must, but he has been better than you are saying he has.

🙂 My bet us they don’t even know who McAdoo is until they Google it. One of the all time worse coaches to have ever had jobs in the NFl. I’d be surprised if he is even employed now. IF he is it should only be at the high school level.

They also don’t know the offense they ran the entire year in Carolina with Baker was the one they ran for the previous QB Sam Darnold.

The number one reason not to write Bryce of yet is because – He plays for the Panthers.

Defense Rules – uh oh, now the Baker Bois are after you as well. You can never ever ever say anything that isn’t 100% positive about Baker, or you’re a hater.

Also there were only 9 QBs last year that started 17 games. When people talk about yards and TDs and don’t bring that up, it’s sort of disingenuous.

Baker was fine last year, 18th in QBR, 20th in scoring – but he certainly wasn’t a franchise QB and didn’t earn some giant long-term deal. However he showed enough to bring back for another year and to see if he can improve some more. Also, if the team is bringing back Baker, they really should stick with the same scheme and just promote someone from within so you have as little change as possible.

    ———–

The franchise tag isn’t as expensive as I thought it would be, at $35m, so yeah that is an option, although the Bucs would likely want to spread out that money so they don’t take the full hit next year, and I think Baker’s team would probably be OK with that.

But you got to get Winfield and Evans done first. There’s literally no reason to bring back Mayfield if Evans leaves.

At the same time if Baker does want some huge deal, then you just let him walk and go get someone else. I’m not sure the market is quite as strong for Baker as people think, but then again it only takes one team to be hot for him, so I could be wrong.

F Evans. He is replaceable. Maybe not 1 for 1 but multiple players. You ME Evans fans are the worst. I’m a BUC fan. The logo not a name.

    QB>>>>>>>>>wr

32 out of 32 GMs would agree. GTFO

I just do not understand the thinking. Why be in a relationship if you do not want the person. Tell them thank you and let them find someone else that wants them. Derrick Brooks you are a joke. If he is not what you want let him leave. Start the we do not want Baker campaign and let him go somewhere else. Maybe the Falcons will just pick him up so he can tear the Bucs up to teach you a lesson. Baker is not the guy you want to bet against.

    Cousins wants $90 mill – 2 years – GUARANTEED

Pay Baker. ME Evans can move to Houston.

    See ya.

BakerFan – There were literally only 9 QBs that started 17 games, what part do you not understand about that?

    ……………………………………………………………..
I usually don’t read your crap, because it is just that, crap. But in this case it was short so I glanced at it. When you sign a player for a contract you are expecting him to play 17 games not 12 or whatever. You Traskcan brains then try to combine a team stat with a player stat. Sorry dude it does not work that way. If anything players that play 17 games should be given credit for a complete season……I am thru with you now.

Teams let future hall of famers still playing at that very high level go all THE TIME because of what they think they will get in the draft from a rookie.

    …………………………………………………………………………..
Jerry Rice, Greatest receiver of all time was let go by 49ers, went to Raiders and had 2 seasons of over 1100 yards and played another 5 years. This is just one example and there are plenty more. I don’t think you know what you are talking about, so I am putting you in Rod Munch category of ignoring.

I’m pretty sure that draft QBs are the worst percentage bet of any position in football. Resigning Baler should be the top priority (unless TB can sign a better free agent for the same $, which seems unlikely). If that means letting another valuable player go, that’s just how it is.
