“Death By Vita Vea, People”

January 17th, 2024

Hyped on Bucs.

Yes, last night the national story of the game was the redemption of Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Left for dead along the roadside by most of the NFL, the way Mayfield this season to get the Bucs within two wins of a Super Bowl certainly shows the Bucs made the right call to sign Mayfield and Mayfield made the right call, too.

Kay Adams, the it-girl of #NFLMedia, gave Mayfield many deserved props on her show yesterday, “Up and Adams” seen weekdays on FanDuelTV.

However, Adams believes the defense hasn’t been getting a lot of love from the Fourth Estate.

Any time a defense can hold an opponent to nine points in a playoff game, that’s good effort and great play.

“This was a really special performance on a really massive stage,” Adams said. “And Tampa’s defense, by the way, give them their love.

“Todd Bowles was in his bag with his blitzes last night driving Jalen Hurts and the entire Philly o-line insane, all night long.

“Once I saw the Tush Push get stopped, I knew it was all over. Death by Vita Vea, people.”

Adams isn’t wrong. A good defense can certainly keep a team in playoff games, no doubt about it.

If the Bucs defense can bring it Sunday in Detroit, let’s say hold the Lions to 21 points, that should give the Bucs a shot.

    yeahhh…

this is a dam good football team…

and big wirfs & co. don’t want you touching their quarterback !!

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Detroit will be a much harder nut to crack than Philadelphia was. Dan Campbell is a very good HC with a great offensive background (5 years as assistant HC to Sean Payton in New Orleans before being hired by Detroit). Campbell & his OC Ben Johnson go waaay back (both were assistants with the Dolphins starting in 2012). And Detroit’s DC, Aaron Glenn, is rock solid (he was New Orleans’ defensive backs coach from 2016-2020 when Campbell was there as assistant HC). And oh ya, John Fox is their senior defensive consultant (he’s got a pretty good defensive resume too).

Detroit’s offense ranked #5 and put up 461 points this year (slightly over 27 PPG average). And yet, the Lions defense can be had; they ranked #23, surrendering 395 PPG (23.3 PG average). Interestingly though, in their 5 losses the Lions only scored 18 PPG average but gave up 30 PPG on average. Just like us, the Lions are susceptible to having bad games. We can beat them, but it’ll take another total TEAM effort to do that.

I absolutely loved that too! Tush Smoosh! We need to bring it on this weekend.

    The Bucs can win this.

The defense has carried this team more than Maybefield’s best season (average by good QB standards), but Joe doesn’t care and gives most of the credit to Barker anyway then wonder why the national media does the same.

  7. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

If Mayfield’s season was average by K-bassuka who obviously doesn’t understand math, he would be 16th in mot NFL QB Statistical categories as there are 32 teams in the NFL. He is much above that. To say the Defense carried the wins is also absurd. The defense lost games they would have wn because of Mayfield like Houston & Atlanta.

It’s all gravy from here. No criticism’s from me this week. These guys have smashed expectations to smithereens and that makes them dangerous now.
Nothing to lose. No pressure. Go have fun!
What a great Dec/Jan they’ve had. Got hot at exactly the right time.
    GO BUCS!

  9. Zoocomics Says:

Detroit is not elite, there I’ve said it. I think their football team is good enough to beat most teams in the NFL, but there’s still something missing from being dominant. Keep in mind, unlike Tampa finishing #1 in the NFC South, they didn’t have to play San Fran or the Eagles, the 2 best teams in the NFC going into this season, both teams were at the top of their game when we played them. As a bonus we played the Bills as well. I think in many ways our schedule was tougher. As good as the Lions were projected, their heaviest games on their schedule were the Cowboys and Ravens, and they lost both of them, they got throttled by the Ravens. As a bonus they were fortunate enough to play the Vikings at the end of the season without Cousins.

I was at the Lions game. I’ve seen and been to games where I feel we got beat down, I didn’t feel that way against the Lions. Game was 10-6 in the 3Q. Look at the stats, we gave up 2 unusual big plays that crushed us. Neal had excellent coverage on Williams on that 45 yard bomb, and he just got the better of the exchange. I think their record indicates the Lions have shown more consistency than us, but we are scarily similar to Lions and I think we match up well with them. I think we’re much better team on both sides of the ball then when we first met. Hutchinson’s growth as a pass rusher might be the only difference we see from this Lions team. I like our chances.

  10. Boomer Says:

    Well,
I listened nd watched a lot of post game analysis talk about the Eagles collapse.
Rarely did anyone mention how well the Bucs played. Canales surprised me with his play calling and damn, the defense played like they didn’t want to go home.
Gotta hand to the coaching staff and the players with that win.

If Canales has his head in the game plan (and not a head coach interview) and
if the Bucs O line can ‘buck up’ and keep Baker on his feet, we got a chance.

  11. Zoocomics Says:

Sorry, I left out the Lions played the Chiefs opening night…well, Chiefs are not the same team they were the last few seasons come to find out, and I think the Lions beating them was still Flukesh. Even that Chiefs team, 4/5 times that game is played, Chiefs win in Arrowhead. That Lions win was very similar to that week`1 surprise with us taking down the Vikings.

  12. Leighroy Says:

House money. You can tell everyone the odds don’t favor the gambler in the casino, but they’ve already scored big and the night is still young.

  13. VATom Says:

Definitely with Baker healthy enough to scramble, pass accurate short and also rip a couple deeper shots and Bowles able to scheme a better backend on the pass defense the possibilities are sooo much better. Rooting for a Motown Blow-em-Down…shiver me timbers!

  14. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Defense wins championships. And it looks to me that my favorite 2 lawnchairs; um er cornerbacks are bringing it. If this continues, the sky is the limit in my humble worthless opinion! Go Bucs

  15. realistic-optimistic Says:

PHI didn’t really show up, that was obvious. But, I won’t take anything away from what the Bucs did to them.

The defense and pass catchers won this game. These stats are from Cynthia Frelund:

“Baker completed 17 of 22 passes of less than 10 air yards, and he completed five of 13 attempts of 10-plus air yards.” “The Bucs also had 219 YAC, which was more than they managed in any regular-season game.”

64% of his passing yards were YAC. I’m not complaining, that’s how Canales should have called with an injured QB. Just put the praise where it belongs.

  16. Gipper Says:

A media that never actually does real reporting but rather just repeats the flavor of the day was more than wiling to bury Mayfield. Baker was injured all of 2021 and should not have played but he tried anyway. That is his nature as all Tampa fans now know. To make matters worse Baker never admitted he was hurting until he finally got surgery after the 2021 season. His reward for trying to play was to be thrown out the window by the Browns in favor of DeShaun Watson who sat out the entire 2021 season because he didn’t approve of the direction Houston was taking in rebuilding the team. Watson is a self indulgent child. Baker is a football player. Those of us who saw Baker set NFL rookie records for TD passes for the worst team ever in NFL history never doubted him. Be wary of the media in general. A lot of lazy “reporting” by not very bright people who are saddled with their own biases and unwillingness to seek truth.

  17. realistic-optimistic Says:

  18. Beeej Says:

If you dig down deep enough, you can find a problem, I suppose.

On a brighter note, I frikkin LOVE the idea of Zyon at safety, it removes Neal and thus lets Dean and CD3 play man, to which they’re more accustomed

  19. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I’m not saying much but, if the offense can give you about three seconds, A Whole Lot Can Happen!! Those five guys are the most important guys to your quarterbacks life line man. A lot was taken from Mayfield his last year in Cleveland, hurt, getting less time to make a solid decision, and well, we have seen how many number ONE picks go down in flames?? Great job and I think Baker should take them out to dinner again. Lol 🤣!!! Let’s hear it from Jimmy, How Bout Them?? What?? BUCS!!!!

  20. realistic-optimistic Says:

We agree about Zyon at S, @Beeej. He looked good as a Swiss-army knife for Bowles. I’m very impressed with how far he’s come in 2 seasons. Amazing value for a 5th round pick.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

The fact that The Eagles tackle like Carlton Davis might have been a factor..

The Bucs played great, but Joe could have scored the same TDs as Moore and Palmer.

  22. K_bassuka Says:

    @Jason Anthony Sturgess

You are confusing average with middle of the pack. And yes, you can say the defense dropped the ball on those 2 games, but we lost to Phi, Det, ATL, Buf, SF, Ind, & NO because Barker didn’t play well. So yes, the defense has carried the team all along.

This team has one of the better if not the best WR duo in the NFL and Maybefield was only able to put similar numbers than a Brady at age 45, but lets act like that’s an amazing accomplishment and sign him to a long term deal.

-If Mayfield’s season was average by K-bassuka who obviously doesn’t understand math, he would be 16th in mot NFL QB Statistical categories as there are 32 teams in the NFL. Hey K, let’s hope you get your way and Baker moves on to Pittsburgh where he can torture the Browns 2x/year for the next 12 years. Everyone can read the impressive 2023 statistical data on Baker. Everyone knows that he has virtually no running game. Everyone knows that his teammates admire him. The only one who doesn’t know this by now is you. Somehow the Bucs will get by without your input.

  25. Joe Says:

Or Greg Gaines but who cares

You really believe people outside of Tampa who are not related to Gaines even know who he is? LOL

  26. realistic-optimistic Says:

Everyone knows that his teammates admire him

This is a guess, not fact. He’s rah-rah and excitable, sure. If you put a personality like that into any large group of people you’ll find that some like it, and some are annoyed by it. That’s just reality. I’d bet some teammates like him and some don’t. His shtick won’t have the same effect on everybody.

    _______
Will spell it out for you Einstein. We are talking about the Browns because it is important to know the truth about the Mayfield story. In case you might have missed it, a big part of the Bucs story this year is Baker Mayfield. To know the Mayfield story it is important for people to know the truth about what happened to him in Cleveland. You don’t have to agree and it looks like so many others, you go out of your way to discredit Baker. That’s OK also, but there is a groundswell building in Tampa and nationally for Baker and the Bucs. Fine if you don’t want to get on board. We will leave that to genuine fans.

How does the Lions D compare to the Panthers D?

  30. unbelievable Says:

Agree DR, detroit is a much more complete and tough team to beat, tho it can be done.

It’s going to come down to how the game starts IMO. If we’re able to come out firing on offense and playing sound defense, I like our chances. If we come out flat and let Detroit get up early, it’s going to be a long long game.

  31. Bojim Says:

Goff isn’t very mobile. Get him out of the pocket and running around. He’ll throw some bad sht.

  32. stpetebucfan Says:

    @Zoocomics

“Detroit is not elite, there I’ve said it.”

No shame in saying that IMHO. I would simply add there is no shame for Detroit or the Lions in that statement. The Salary Cap has worked it’s magic and there aren’t any truly elite teams in the NFL anymore. There will be no more long running dynasties like the Steelers and ‘Boys and Niners. I will say both the “Boys” and the Niners have great organizations that field competitive teams year in and year out…but elite..nah…even the Chiefs are mortal if excellent.

Given what Licht has accomplished in this salary cap era with this team…he deserves the NFL’s Executive of the Year Award. I realize that Brad Holmes will be the sentimental favorite for running the Lions but again IMHO Licht did more with less this year.

IF Licht produces a draft this year like last year the Bucs finally get to be mentioned with the Niners, Chiefs, and ‘Boys as organizations that compete year in and year out. The Bucs are not likely to win the SB this year but they’ve at least put their names into the pool this post season. The Bucs have NOTHING to be ashamed of since Licht took over and finally wrested control from Lovie. No more Fameis Jameis moronic choices!!! BTW I’ll out myself as a moron because I was all in for selecting Fameis.

  33. CleanHouse Says:

I don’t like all of this talk that the Bucs have arrived.

If they show up uninspired and lay an egg in Detroit, then too me Its more of the same.

This team seems to like to rest on its laurels.

If we come to play, we should be able to beat this team.

If the garbage version of the team shows up, it’s all still questionable in my view.

Second round of the playoffs is not a moral victory. Don’t read your own press Bucs!

Go win another game Todd Bowles/ Baker Mayfield

If you make it to the NFC Championship, win or lose, I’ll view it as a successful season and suspend my doubts.

This team playing on all cylinders should be able to beat Detroit or even Green Bay.

San Fran I’m not so sure but you never know.

    LFG!

  34. orlbucfan Says:

Panthers’ DLine is no cupcake. They’re good. NC’s problem is an idiot new owner. Bowles is having fun planning the Defensive game. Unlike the Jets, Bucs have had great Defenses. Not many, but when they worked, they were great. They have one rebuilding now. Bucs also have an excellent GM and staff. BM was amazing against Philly. Rib and foot injuries? No problemo. The only complaint is the dropped passes. Canales better repeat himself mentally cos we’re going to need it Sunday. C’mon, Bucs!!

  42. David Says:

    Absolutely.
The defense NEEDS to focus on Ghibbs. He is dangerous. The secondary needs to double Amon. ALSO, more blitzing. Goff is not as mobile as hurts, can’t let him sit there and have time

On offense: PASS. Lions DBs are not good but the team tackles better than the Eagles.

It is going to be close but I think the Bucs get it done mainly because Evans has been shut down 2 games in a row and that is not happening again.

    ME13- 100+ and 2 TDs

  43. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

Our D might have been a little overshadowed by the press but Dan Campbell noticed. He had high praise for not only VV but Kancey and YaYa as well. He said it’s tough when you have to account for one stud on D but he said we have 3 that they need to keep an eye on at every snap.

We have some serious muscle on both lines, Wirfs and Goedeke on O and Wirfs and Kancey on D to name a few. These guys are freakishly strong. Combine that with our speed guys on D and Bowles scheming them up to maximize their abilities and we can do some damage.

If we limit penalties and drops on O and come out with the same swagger and confidence as we did against Philly’s D, I can see a solid win on Sunday. Do that and they’ll get even more respect with no excuses about our opponent being a trash team. (Are you listening NEfan and David?)

    Go Bucs!
