Todd Bowles: Playing With A Lead Fueled Pass Rush

December 25th, 2023

Last night after the Bucs beatdown of the Jags, Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence admitted the Bucs had a nasty pass rush that got to him and Jacksonville had no answers.

In fact, Lawrence said, when the Bucs got a big lead, the Jags had no choice but to throw. The Bucs knew it and Lawrence said the Bucs pass rushers simply pinned their ears back. They were coming after him.

In his day-after presser this afternoon, Bucs coach Todd Bowles pretty much agreed with Lawrence’s assessment.

“Getting up in the score usually doesn’t happen for us,” Bowles said. “We are usually fighting tooth and nail. When we get up and get ahead, we can be even more aggressive. So that allows us to take advantage of some things.”

And boy oh boy did that happen last night. The Bucs had four sacks and five quarterback hits on Lawrence and his backup C.J. Beathard.

A pass defense’s best friend is a pass rush. Especially a pass defense that had been struggling of late.

An Achilles tear ussually takes 2 years to completely recover your speed.
Shaq is looking faster last few games.
And adding Yaya to the mix has really improved our Pass rush.
    Which really improves our secondary!

  2. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Pass rush is still non existent without a blitz and that barely gets thru most of the time especially on 3rd down because we keep running zone

  3. Jack Clark Says:

““Getting up in the score usually doesn’t happen for us,” Bowles said. “We are usually fighting tooth and nail.”

=>That’s because you told your offensive coordinators to keep wasting our first and second downs running between the tackles!

“Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence admitted the Bucs had a nasty pass rush that got to him and Jacksonville had no answers.”

=>That’s because we kept JTS sorry, weak, soft, useless as on the bench 😂

Bowles sucks as a HC. I’m sorry. Every quote, thought, comment is worse than the last m

If Bowles sucks as a HC then why are we on a 4 game winning streak and first place in our division? Oh, and don’t forget about the winning record without Tom Brady 🫢

  6. Aceofaerospace Says:

Bowels is probably secured for at least one more year. Win another game and the division title and it’s guaranteed. As much as I’ve hated on him, I’m ok with that. I love being proven wrong when I’m predicting destruction of my Bucs. Just keep winning. Go Bucs!

  7. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

If we keep playing like the last 2 games, certainly do not change a thing. Then draft hogs on both sides of the line in the off season.

  8. JD12 Says:

Well if they stopped with the Pop Warner offense and the soft cover defense that they run, then yeah, you probably wouldn’t be trailing as much as you did. I still worry about the secondary against some of these high powered offenses but we will cross that bridge when we get there. Lets hope that they keep this momentum and make a little playoff push !!

Thanks to fans, players family members, stakeholders, members on this site, and other fans on social media platform, Bowles is coming out his shell n starting to listen to the folks who impacts his destiny. He knows that previously he has shown a lack of aggressiveness over the past year. Therefore, he knows that fans are doing some barking n it’s his job to put the bite in teams’ arse. Let’s get this ball going n rolling from the 2020 get “hot at the right time” season.

  10. EternalSon Says:

    Fun stuff!

The roughing call on White was pretty turrible.

Team has a nice roll going!

  11. Winny Testaverde Says:

With Keep Tryon no longer tip toeing thru the tulips, the rush is far more fierce and consistent.

  12. ATLBuc Says:

Joe, I just thought about something. When we won the Super Bowl, every team that we played in the postseason beat us during the regular season. Is that some kind of record or has it happened before? Actually, we were zero and five against the teams that we met in the playoffs Because the Saints beat us twice during the season

  13. Ryan Says:

@ATLBUC Nah man we whooped the packers earlier in the season and never played the commanders. We only beat the saints and the chiefs

  14. Defense Rules Says:

There were some interesting dynamics going on yesterday in terms of our offense & defense (some might even view it as COMPLIMENTARY FOOTBALL?) …

o Drive 1: Bucs’ offense march 69 yds after receiving opening kickoff for FG (3-0 Bucs).
o Drive 2: Bucs’ offense gets ball at Tampa 44 after defense made INT & march 56 yds for a TD (10-0 Bucs).
o Drive 3: Bucs ‘offense gets ball at Tampa 42 after Jags missed FG & march 45 yds for another FG (Bucs 13-0).
o Drive 4: Bucs offense gets ball at Tampa 35 after defense made INT & march 65 yds for a TF (Bucs 20-0).
o Drive 5: Offense had only 1 play (kneeldown) to end the half.
o Drive 6: Bucs’ offense gets ball at Jags’ 37 yd line after a fumble recovery & drives 37 yds for a TD (Bucs 27-0).
o Drive 7: Bucs’ offense gets the ball at the Tampa 40 yd line after our defense held them on 4th down & they drove 60 yds for a TD (Bucs 30-0).

After that it got boring. Until then however there was some impressive COMPLIMENTARY FOOTBALL going on at RayJay. Our defense took the ball away 4 times, and each time our offense parlayed the excellent field position into points. Football at its finest.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Earth to Todd – when you come out throwing on first down and use downfield targets instead of behind the line dumps, it tends to favor more early points. We all know you don’t like offense because you thought it tired out your defense. Hopefully you’ll favor the Packers / Jags type of offensive gameplan and continue the level of aggression. Please.

DMatt … ‘Thanks to fans, players family members, stakeholders, members on this site, and other fans on social media platform, Bowles is coming out his shell n starting to listen to the folks who impacts his destiny.’

Or MAYBE it’s just taken this long for the groundwork that he & Canales laid earlier in the season to start paying off? There’s been a LOT of ‘learning on the job’ going on this season me thinks.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

PS – Diaby is the real deal.

  18. Usfbuc Says:

Idk if it’s the ground work on offense. The offense to me looks efficient now, maybe they simplified things or something? The defense benefited in these past two games because the offense wasn’t going three and out and we built an early lead.

  19. Bradley Brown Says:

@ATLBuc. The Buccaneers beat the Packers 38 to 10 in the regular season. I’m not sure that we even played Washington.

  20. Usfbuc Says:

And yes Dave I agree though I hate to count my chickens before they hatch but Diaby looks like he will be at least a good player. I am excited for the future of the defense of the young players can continue to grow this season and next.

Nah, it’s definitely from Todd Bowles stubborn as finally taking us fans advice to:

    1. Throw it to Chris Godwin more
    2. Stop forcing our OCs to waste first and second downs running between the tackles because he wanted to be a run first team
    3. Take more calculated risks instead of playing like a coward
    4. Stop calling that weak as, soft zone cover 2 defense
    5. Bench JTS sorry, weak, soft useless as and start YaYa Diaby

  22. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Godwin in the slot, screens and cross routes for Reschaad White and Baker being more confident in the pocket and more accurate on his passes is what has fueled the last two games. Cornales has changed up his calls except the runs up the gut on consecutive plays at times. He needs to stop it with that it keeps putting us in too many 3rd & longs making an impact between a td and fg

  23. David Says:

No. It wasn’t just a pass rush . Trevor is just a trash qb worst than Baker. I am glad Toilet Bowl and Baker defeated this over rated qb.

  25. orlbucfan Says:

Canales is getting on the same page with his offensive players. He’s been drawing up throws to ME13, CG14, RWhite, and the TEs starting with Otton. BM and the OLine have been talking to him, too. BM is not only feisty, he’s smart. You usually see it in the second half, but it exploded in the first half. He knew the Jags D formations. Next Sunday will be something else. That will make it 5 games in a row-Bucs best. Wowsers!

  31. Astralturf Says:

You have to run the ball early in order to run the ball later, right? If you don’t run early, the opponent run defense won’t be tired later on. It doesn’t look pretty, but you have to run with small gains to keep the running weapon on the table for when everybody is gassed…unless you’re way behind on the scoreboard.

  32. garro Says:

Todd must have read my post from the other day. Finally!

    LOL

Any coach will tell you it is a big plus to be able to turn the pass rushers loose with a lead.

    Go Bucs!

  33. Ed McSherry Says:

And don’t forget the Bowles problem with “time outs” management.

He seems to finally “be over” running on every first down no matter what. But the lack of “end of the game skills” is still there; closing-the-deal is still Shakey.

The wins are great and giving credit to the coaching is a natural reaction, but the problem is that the improvements are based on “what Bowles -isn’t- doing anymore,” way more than what he and Canales -are- doing on the innovative/new approach side of things.

The players are doing the winning. Why does there have to be all this PR Campaign discussion, suggesting that “See, Bowles was right all along.” Uh, no, he wasn’t right all along, he just “let up” on a lot of the horrible decisions trends he’s been making all year; and the team is finally reaching it’s potential because of it and doing the rest.

90% credit to the players, and we’ll give Bowles/canales 10%
for the excellent improvement in low penalty-calls lately, how’s that?

It’s been a great pleasure for four straight games, watching impressive drives NOT being derailed by “call-back” holding, etc., calls.

Remember Rachaad’s seam-pass touchdown with that “shift” at the end? No flag! for a change, awesome!

And the Saints didn’t look too good against the Rams, whoa.
