The “Wasted Steps” Have Disappeared

December 27th, 2023

Joe has been hard on Todd Bowles for not getting rookie edge rusher YaYa Diaby on the field in place of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka sooner.

There may not be one exact reason why Diaby, the Bucs’ sacks leader, wasn’t a starter until last month (and the whole truth may never be revealed), but Bowles appeared to explain one on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week.

Bowles noted how first-year Bucs outside linebackers coach George Edwards has done a great job developing Diaby’s get-off from the line of scrimmage and now it’s no longer a weakness.

“That’s kind of been the only thing holding him back. He was already fast and could run but his get-off wasn’t that sharp,” Bowles said of Diaby. “He doesn’t have any wasted steps on his get-off anymore, so he’s getting back there [to the quarterback] pretty good.”

Ahhh, developing players. The Bucs have been great at that for five consecutive seasons.

Bowles didn’t say when Diaby got past his get-off issues, but Joe will be nice and assume it was not long before Diaby was named a starter rather than in September or October.

The move was made before the season was lost. I’ll look at the glass as half full on this.

EJ: that crap is for after the season is over.

  4. Dave Pear Says:

Why can’t Todd teach his DB’s their assignments?

  5. Andrew Catalfina Says:

Sure looked like coach didnt change what he was doing. IMO a few weeks seems to reaffirm that.

As a guy who Played DE and offensive LT. I can assure you that wasting steps will get you beat on either side of the ball. A player who’s first step is off of the wrong foot or who has a false step in the wrong direction is not gonna win very many reps in the NFL.

So on that one I am with Bowles. But how a guy gets all the way to the NFL level and has not had that coached out of him never ceases to amaze me. The number of O linemen coming out of college these days with poor footwork is amazing. They get by on sheer size and strength alone. Can’t do that in the NFL.

DEs who give up the edge with their first or second step is another one. Unless you have help outside and/or you are running a game, the edge is the number one priority…period.

Diaby was wasting steps? What’s JTS been doing?

  9. Front Four Says:

My money on when a player is ready to start is with Bowles. We all knew JTS was done. Diaby was consistently getting more PT and became the starter when the coaches felt he was ready.

EJ, get some help with English and punctuation please…your post was hard to impossible to read.

Just finished watching film highlights of JTS 2021-23 season. This guy has no business playing in the nfl. Every OT he went up against handled him with ease. It was like he was just running in place against OTs. Desmond Ritter made a fool of him, twice. The bone head play against he made against Joe Burrows last year was embarrassing. I’ve seen enough, he’s just not physically, emotionally, or mentally fit to play in the nfl. Let’s admit it, JTS is a BUST!!
Am I the only one to notice this. Any thoughts on this? Please share.

Diaby’s got a Simeon Rice look to him.

I have to chuckle every time I read a complaint about the English skillz shown by the commenters and joes (at times) on here. I’m watching the game this weekend so I can see players in real time. Concentrating on the Defense. For once, I’m not sweating Cardiac Bucs. Go Tampa Bay!!

JTS will be fighting for a roster spot next season. Yaya snatched his job

  16. bucsfaninOregon Says:

Dmatt, I have just watched him for 2 years flailing away. I missed the Bear game and I guess that is where he got his sacks. Otherwise, I have never seen ONE!

There’s no pity in monopoly, it says so in the rules. sorry for those getting an earful, your on the big money side of the board in this game.
translation: a guy like earnest graham was willing to live in his car to play in the nfl, and turned out good. i love jason and bowles but next time don’t hesitate to bench nonperformers.

  18. Wild Bill Says:

JTS was a bust from the getgo. Looks like a thourobred, plays like a nag. Licht really bombed on such a high draft pick. Kinda embarrassing, but Licht doesn’t miss very often.
