“Coaches Have To Come Up With A Better Gameplan”

December 31st, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Watching the Bucs offense today Joe was just about horrified. Guys the Bucs should have leaned on, they didn’t. Guys the Bucs should have used to their skillsets, they didn’t.

And, after two games where the offense exploded, partly because the Bucs threw on first downs and were aggressive, the Bucs offense went back to 1970s ball, pounding Rachaad White between the tackles for little to no production.

(The one time White found daylight and took advantage of it, he coughed the ball up.)

It was gross. It was revolting. It was insulting. It was a throwback to the October 2023 Bucs when it appeared there was going to be a regime change in January.

You know who seemed to think the same thing? Bucs coach Todd Bowles. The very first words out of his mouth were about the gameplan and Bowles was none too happy.

“Our coaches have to come up with a better gameplan,” Bowles said. “On both sides of the ball. And players have to play it better.”

Trust Joe, Bucs fans knew this as well. In the third quarter down three scores near midfield, Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales called for Rachaad White runs up the middle on both first down and second-and-long, with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin inexplicably on the sidelines, Bucs fans let the team have it.

The boobirds were outraged. Joe couldn’t blame them.

One thing that irritated Joe was this game seemed set up for Evans to have a huge day. His kryptonite, Marshon Lattimore, is on the injured reserve list.

Yet Evans had fewer targets than Cade Otton in the first half.

Bowles credited the slimy Saints defense.

“They did a good job of taking away Mike and Chris [Godwin] early on,” Bowles said. “They disguised it well.

“They ran guys over to him to make it look like he was [open] when he wasn’t [open].”

How frustrated was Bowles with his team’s coaching and his players’ execution? Bowles said the Bucs would have lost today playing any opponent.

“It doesn’t matter who we played today,” Bowles said. “A good team, a bad team, a college team, a high school team. We wouldn’t have won the game.”

Truth sometimes hurts, doesn’t it?

If you want a better game plan give Todd his Walking Papers!

  2. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yeah, Todd gotta go, despite what happens next week. Not beating the Eagles or the Cowboys, I don’t think.

  3. Chris from Gainesville Says:

Sometimes I think we try to out think ourselves. That being said, it was one of those days nothing went our way.

  4. Mord Says:

That last quote is really something; inexplicable and inexcusable, especially at this moment in this season

  5. HC Grover Says:

Worst game plan ever. I meas the WORST! And they did not drop it when they saw it was stupid….or are they that stupid? Glad the paying fans let them have it. The TV coverage tried to block out the boos but I could tell. The PTB are not happy. Next week could cost big bucks if they can not snap out of the voo doo trance the Stainks put on them.

  6. Oxycondomns Says:

Head coach should be able to make adjustments during the game. Bowles usually isnt one to make excuses looks like hes feeling the pressure and he didn’t rise up to the occasion. He cant afford that mindset next week

  7. SteveK Says:

Can you ask Coach Bowles why he doesn’t utilize first half timeouts? It’s a worrying trend that makes little sense.

  8. unbelievable Says:

    Uhhh, no chit?

    What an absolute moron

  9. Citrus County Says:

Todd Bowles seems to be trying to lay this loss off on all of his assistants and the players. Wake up Todd, you are the head coach, you are the boss, did you not review all the game plans and approve them ? Did you impress on the players the need to win this game at home for the fans and themselves. You failed sir.

  10. HC Grover Says:

“Our Coaches” BS Bowls is HC/DC he is the one who makes the plans. What a jerk.

  11. Boss Says:

Wtf…. Seriously…..this is the same as lefty’s offense…play not to lose.

This is on bowels. He is now not only a bad head coach, but a pos human being throwing others under the bus for doing what he told them too.

  12. D-Rok Says:

“Our coaches have to come up with a better gameplan,” Bowles said. “On both sides of the ball.”

He should find the head coach and chew him out.

It’s as if he didn’t KNOW the gameplan from his coaches?

    #Pathetic.

  13. unbelievable Says:

The statement about losing to a college or high school team is the only correct thing Bowles has said or done today.

  14. Jack Clark Says:

Finally Todd Bowles accepted accountability for his sorry as coaching and leadership

  15. Boss Says:

    Let mike walk.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Uggggh we are gonna be stuck with this guy next year too. UGHHHH!

  17. StormyInFl Says:

    It’s Bowles. Always Bowles.

He’s a conservative clown who has let the NFL pass him by. He’s fortunate the rest of the division is a sht-show, otherwise he’d definitely be gone.

  18. Citrus County Says:

Wait a minute, Todd Bowles is blaming his coaches for the game plan. Are YOU not de facto the defensive coordinator ? Does the defensive coordinator not draw up the defensive game plan or at least review and approve the plan ? Does the head coach not have influence over and approve the offensive game plan ? Sorry Mr. Bowles this failure is on you.

  19. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

All the happy 4 game euphoria is gone and the knives are out. They had a bad game. It happens in the NFL.

  20. SB~LV Says:

    Yawn 🥱🥱🥱🥱

  21. Pewter power Says:

“Our coaches have to come up with a better gameplan,” Bowles said. Damn what’s worse his game day coaching or press conferences?

You mean to say you didn’t sign off on the offense or defensive game plan even though you call the plays? Run it back? Useless Bowles and that 4 game winning streak didn’t change my mind.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

Can someone let Todd know that, as the head coach, he has a say in and in fact is accountable for the game plan?

He should be fired on the spot for those comments.

  23. Saskbucs Says:

Haha well apparently Canales offensive gameplan wasn’t influenced by Bowles, I stand corrected and am very disappointed in Dave. That was awful. Bowles better be including himself in that critique. Guy has got to go. Lifeless team in that game is super embarrassing for him.

  24. Jason Anthony Sturgess Says:

Why would Canales & whoever the Defensive Coordinator is come up withthis Game Plan? I don’t get it. Why don’t the journalists who attend Thursdays Press Conference with Canales ever ask him why he continues to unsuccessvilely run the ball up the middle? I don’t get it. It doesn’t set the passing game up for anything other than longer first downs.

  25. dbbuc711 Says:

If Bowles really believed that he should have already resigned.

  26. I remember 21 Says:

Here’s the better game plan: the two guys you pay $20M per and your best in the league pass catching RB should be the focus of the passing game. Those three should get 75-80% of the targets. Today they combined for 39% of targets. JAG Otton and nobody Edmonds got 36%. There is no, AND I MEAN NO, acceptable explanation for that. In fact it’s the kind of game plan that leads to a pink slip in the not too distant future. It’s really not rocket science. You don’t need a whole season or an off season to figure these things out. White is NOT a good between the tackles runner. He IS a good pass catching back. Maybe bowles could use one of those first half timey outey things and let Canales know to switch it TF up. But that would necessitate bowles being a competent HC. He is not. Just like I don’t want bowles having anything to do with a rookie QB, I think he’s stunted Canales as well. Seems like every week we get an article here on JBF about Canales saying he’s going to be stubborn about running the ball. Where did these guys get the idea being stubborn was a desirable quality? We all know bowles is one of the most stubborn guys alive, is Canales trying to follow in his footsteps? He better be careful because if there is any justice in this world, bowles’ footsteps are gonna lead right out the door of OBP in a few short weeks, never to return.

    #FIREbowles #stillNOconfidence

  27. VOT Says:

Besides the horrific game plans in all 3 aspects as special teams was atrocious today to compliment the ineptitude on O and D – the players showed its lack of confidence in this staff with their complete lack of intensity on the field

We got beat up on both sides of the ball for 3 hours

Embarrassing is a word used in conjunction with Bowles far too often

  28. Pelsbuc61 Says:

I hope we can put all the feel good crap out of the way now and realize that Bowles will never be any good and that this team can never be more than average and mediocre at best while he’s the coach. His defense and DBs are horrible and the offense continues to try to run despite knowing full well it can’t. Why make the playoffs to know the Cowboys or Eagles will blow them out.?

  29. PewterStiffArm Says:

The Groundhog Bucs. This is what we saw today. I have been saying it all year long, and last year. We STINK at home, period. We stunk with Brady and we stink with Baker. We lost two years ago against the Rams, last year against Dallas. The only consolation is if we win next week against the stinking Panthers, if and only if, we can atleast hit the reset button. If we do win next week and host our playoff game, we better show up. A sequel to Groundhog day is in the making. With Bill Murray laughing at these bumbling Buccaneers. Jesus, Philly lost and Dallas escaped with a win, in Jerry’s house! Running on first and second down, priceless. Wake up people, all three sides of the ball stunk today, even Camarda, the lone consistent player. Winfield Jr. allowing a quarterback to score on him, a quarterback! If we sh#t the bed at home after a Carolina win, use dinomite to fix this.

  30. SufferingSince76 Says:

But it’s all okay because the Bucs were expected to suck this year, right?

  31. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

    FIRE THIS MORON

  32. gp Says:

Sounds to me like Todd is preparing to throw Canales under the bus.
Well, It’s not like he’s ever done that before with any of his previous OC’s…
Oh wait! He’s done that with every single one of his OC’s!

  33. Frank Pillow Says:

Look in the mirror Todd. They marched down the field on the opening drive and barely broke a sweat. It was YOUR D that set the tone for this latest turd-fest! What a boob.

  34. Jugheadfla Says:

Go back and listen to every post game presser and see how many times he said himself he got outcoached….how many times does it take before you get yourself fired? This tool bag needs to go if this team wants to progress. If not you are stuck in flaccid land with Bowels movement

  35. Aaron Says:

    Really!!!

  36. Couch Fan Says:

Like I said, throwing everybody under the bus but himself. Didnt take accountability for anything.

Sounds to me like Todd is preparing to throw Canales under the bus.

    ————-

He’s the head coach he needs to make his OC accountable.

  38. ScottyMack Says:

Well, we’ve seen it this year as we did last year … the Bucs do extremely well in hurry-up offense but because Bowles is far more concerned about his defense getting rest than he is in the offense scoring points, the Bucs are handcuffed by a head coach who only seems to be concerned about his reputation as a defensive coach.

You actually want to win, Todd? Mix in hurry-up from time-to-time throughout the game, like many teams do, preventing the defense of the other team from making substitutions on especially critical third downs.

Unforntunately, you and I both know that this will NEVER HAPPEN!

  39. D Cone Says:

Incompletion. Incompletion. Sack before the half.
Incompletion. 6 yard run. Incompletion . After the half.
Passer Rating of 22 at the half. Against one of the best passing defenses. Hmm
One score and it’s a 10 point game.
OC made a great call to Run the ball. Was going well until the fumble.
Bucs lost because of Execution and not Scheme.
If any leaning was being done must have been leaning against the bar telling each other how great the Team is.
Maybe it was the media stroking the boy wonder the last three weeks.

Philly lost to 4-12 today. Bucs could be on upset alert against 2-14 next week

  40. Bucs33Saints14! Says:

Started my morning doing landscaping. I had a game plan: yank, dig, shovel, plant and then watch the Bucs kick the Saints (maybe 33-14). After watching that miserable first half of football, I made adjustments: TV off, back outside digging, shoveling and planting.

  41. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Canales got schooled by Joe Woods today. Pretty sure that bright young man learned a lesson and won’t be waylaid like that again.

  42. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Woods was a DC in CLE while Mayfield was there. Pretty sure he knew just how to get him out of his comfort zone

  43. Les Says:

We need new coaching ! It is obvious !! No plays to counter a pass rush. None ! Your fired

  44. Citrus County Says:

I remember 21 Says: Just like I don’t want bowles having anything to do with a rookie QB, I think he’s stunted Canales as well.

EXACTLY. I agree 100%. Canales is young with lots of potential and surely he realizes that. I would not be surprised to see him wanting to move on in spite of his gratitude to Bowles.

  45. Kgh4life Says:

Really Todd? The fans have been saying that all season. This coaching staff on numerous occasions come up with some bad gameplans, which is why this team is so inconsistent.

  46. gp Says:

    @Tony
So, In your opinion, the head coach has no accountability for the game plans and failings of HIS coaching staff?
Every losing season he has had as HC, he has blamed his OC.

I just don’t know what more I could tell you. The proof is in the pudding.

  47. Usedtocould Says:

Some people are saying Bowles isn’t a great coach, and should be fired. I need to hear the full argument.

  48. David Says:

No Toilet Bowl and your devoted son, Baker need to go. You are 1-6 against the team with the wining record. You will be blown out even if you make the playoffs next week.

  49. Vanessa Anne Says:

    I call bullsh!t.

Mr. Bowles, you’ve been saying that all year.

What you did today sir, is a living, breathing example of the very old (and very true) maxim:

The Definition of Insanity is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over, and Expecting a Different Result.

It’s not rocket science, Mr. Bowles.

Frankly sir, I think it’s a shame (and I’m also a little embarrassed for our team) that it took the wife of one of your star players to publicly call you out on social media for your smoke and mirrors comments about her husband’s playing time, before you changed anything.

By the way, that players’ name is Chris Godwin. You should meet him sometime. Introduce your Offensive Coordinator to him, while you’re at it. He can help you win games.

I was also, quite frankly, a little embarrassed (and admittedly, a little amused) by the whole debacle with Devin White prior to the Green Bay game.

Again, I can’t help but think that was another situation that could have been avoided if you had simply been honest instead of blowing smoke and mirrors at the media the fans of your team, and the public at large.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps you should review the box scores and review the tapes of the previous four games as a refresher on how to win football games.

You won those games by doing exactly the opposite of what you’d done for the rest of the season, and what you did today.

You threw the ball. A lot. You targeted Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. A lot. You ran Rachaad White around the seams instead of up the middle. A lot. You benched Devin White and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka in favor of K.J. Britt and YaYa Diaby. You ditched the soft zone defensive coverage in favor of more man coverage.

You played more man coverage on defense versus the soft zone you’d been playing all year.

(By the way, if you’d like an example of how man coverage can be very effective, just review today’s game tape. Pay particular attention to your defensive coverage and compare it to the Saints’ defensive coverage.)

And look at what happened when you changed things up Mr. Bowles. You WON.

Not one or two games, but four in a row!!!

Now you’re up on the press conference podium once again, spouting the same smoke and mirrors you spouted after 7 other losses:

“Our coaches have to come up with a better gameplan,” Bowles said. “On both sides of the ball. And players have to play it better.”

Um, excuse me, sir. You’re the head coach. Isn’t it part of your job to sign off on game plans before the game?

Specifically sir, how does reverting to the same plan that lost you 7 previous games and allowed you to mostly scrape by with victories in many (but not all) of the games you won, give you a better shot at victory this time.

Mr. Bowles, may I respectfully suggest that one of these days, and maybe after your next loss, you stand at the podium and say something along the lines of you taking responsibility for the loss.

I don’t think I’ve heard that from you this year, sir.

“Our coaches have to come up with a better… …and our players have to play it better.”

With kindness, courtesy, and respect Mr. Bowles, go blow that smoke up someone else’s a$$.

    Mine’s closed.

    With Kind Regards,

    Vanessa Anne

  50. Ugotrobbed Says:

TB already starting to throw HIS assistants under the bus! This game plan screams TB! You would think he would be man enough to take full responsibility for this debacle.
Hey Glasers , how about hiring a competent HC!

  51. IrishTony Says:

Here’s the irony Aints fans wanted them to lose so they could fire the equally incompetent Dennis Allen. But this loser staff couldn’t even oblige. They were out coached by a freakin disaster of a staff.

  52. IrishTony Says:

How do you get away from what’s been working? The Aints have no pass rush so was the back end coverage that good? Jesus! Anyway Aints will probably lose to to the Birds and I’d assume this team can beat the Kitties next week. They’re going to back into the playoffs and probably have their ass handed to them again.

  53. Citrus County Says:

    Vanessa Anne Says:

    Ditto

  54. Citrus County Says:

    IrishTony Says:

    Ditto

  55. Lakeland Steve Says:

And to think I was starting to climb back in the Bowles bandwagon. Thankfully the Yucs showed up today not the Bucs. The lovable losers showed their true colors. Hopefully the Glazers were paying attention today and realize that this might be as good as it gets with this coaching staff and these players

  56. Curse of Gruden Says:

Low IQ coaching staff, Bowles admits it.

  57. Fred Says:

There really was a very positive thing that happened during the game today: Todd made it very clear he won’t be here next year………but we need a clean sweep!

  58. BelleGladeBuc Says:

As a former offensive line coach, the head coach is the one responsible for the final game plan. The win-loss record is only recorded to the head coach.

The buck stops with him. If the game plan fails if I see his fault. If the game plan succeeds the head coach gets the credit.

Blaming others for your ultimate failure as the head coach speaks volumes about your own personal level of accountability.

  59. Mark hardt Says:

Yea simple. 1. Futile commitment to the run. 2. Way too late on the no huddle offense. Start when two scores down regardless of the Quarter. 3. One interception was an under throw. The other a tip. Both fumblez were bad. Still if you had started the no huddle after going down by 14 you might have won. Baker operates best at pace. I would do two random no huddles every half regardless of the score.

  60. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    The coaches were terrible.

    Baker was awful.

    The offensive line played poorly.

The defensive pass rush was atrocious.

    Our secondary was horrible.

    Our linebackers couldn’t cover TE’s.

    The punter played poorly.

With the stakes as high as they could be with a playoff on the line, everyone performed poorly.

This was a team loss from top to bottom, and Todd Bowles is the ultimately responsible for this loss as he is the Head Coach.

If you’re on the Bucs team right now and you’re not soul searching and trying to figure out what you did wrong to contribute to this massive loss so you can fix it, but you’re pointing fingers at others instead of at yourself, then you are a part of the problem.

  61. Aceofaerospace Says:

It’s like Anal Canales is trying to make it all about him and not the superstars. “I’m going to prove to you ‘unwashed’ that you run the ball on first and second down when down by 20 and 10 minutes left in the game”. Guess what Anal. It is all about you. You’ve proven you’re in over your head. You and your boss, Toilet Bowels.

  62. TheLaughingMan Says:

Gotta say Vanessa Anne hit the nail on the head there..

Punt Raschaad White as well…he’s not a franchise RB…

  63. BucU Says:

Vanessa excellent post. One more thing…
Hey Todd? FU. You’re an embarrassment to every Bucs fan. Incompetent fool.
