Bucs Had Nine Defenders On The Field On Bijan Robinson’s Touchdown

December 11th, 2023

Yeah, the Bucs won. That doesn’t mean Joe’s going to bury his head in the sand when really bad coaching rears its head.

In the fourth quarter when the Bucs were trying to put the game away, they made one of the dumbest stunts imaginable that allowed Bijan Robinson to score easily.

OK, who had their heads up their tails yesterday? It wasn’t just one defender.

In the fourth quarter when the Bucs were one score from putting the game away, leading 19-10, at least two players on defense for the Bucs had their heads, well, elsewhere. Certainly not in the game.

When Robinson scored on a three-yard jog up the right side, it looked like he did so with relative ease. You would too if you were going up against just nine defenders.

That’s right. The Bucs had nine defenders on the field. Nine! Don’t believe Joe? The video is below.

Crap like that is simply inexcusable. And as former Bucs guard Ian Beckles said in recent weeks about the Bucs not having enough defensive guys on the field in goal-line stands prior to yesterday, that’s on coaching, plain and simple.

The Bucs were very fortunate to dodge such a huge mistake. You know, winning cures all ills.

It’s painfully obvious that he cant handle HC and DC duties.

  2. Paratrooper Buc Says:

This is why I and certainly others feel so conflicted about winning. We want the team to win but this crappy coaching is why winning hurts us by covering up to a point the bad coaching. Bowles needs to go. Regardless of us winning the NFC South, he needs to go. The defensive guru had 9 guys on the field and didn’t notice or did but didn’t want to use a timeout. Both options are inexcusable. He needs to go.

  3. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Anyone in the press ask him about this/

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bowles will be very lucky to survive his ineptitude.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Are you certain there weren’t two players off camera? Because the camera did not show the outside areas of the field.

    But…if true, well…Bowles.

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

But let’s be honest…it would not have mattered.

  7. BigPoppaBuc Says:

There’s most definitely someone other than Bowles responsible for substitutions and making sure the right number of cleats are on the field. I also understand shish rolls downhill, but to pin this solely on Bowles is just silly guys. Somebody goofed and I’m sure they know who they are.

    DING!!!!!!!

And for my part, I also cannot escape the feeling that Baker will turn into a Fitzmagic situation next year.

  9. LVMYBUCS Says:

This team is what it is and if anybody thinks we have a good coaching staff wait until the first game of the playoffs.

  10. truth5 Says:

    @Paratrooper Buc

You speak truth good sir. Bittersweet W yesterday.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

BigPoppaBuc, Bowles is in charge of the defense. I get making justifications for him if offense was on the field, but this is 100% on him, regardless of who else assists in that area.

If…Joe is right. I wish we had a better camera angle.

  12. Davenport Says:

For those who want us to keep winning …. that’s a preview of 2024.

Is a blowout playoff loss worth it?

  13. Dave Pear Says:

    No one should be surprised.

What is surprising is that the Bucs won.

Todd would be an awesome neighbor, a great dude to grill steaks and pop beers with.

He’s among the worst head coaches in the history of the NFL.

“This team is what it is and if anybody thinks we have a good coaching staff wait until the first game of the playoffs.”

    I agree.

Unfortunately, we have the Packers, Jags, Saints, and Panthers left to play, with a solid chance of going 9-8 on the season…If that happens…we may not see a coaching change.

  15. Scott Says:

If our guys didn’t make those splash plays we would be toast! That has nothing to do with Bowles. London had a career day after not doing crap all year.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I will admit though…if I thought we could win in the playoffs…I would feel a lot differently.

  17. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Don’t need a different camera angle. 11 offensive players, 9 defensive players.
No excuse period. Well…only excuse is Todd Bowles.

  18. confido75 Says:

Even if the Bucs win the Division and subsequently get blown out in the playoffs again, there still needs to be a coaching change. They are winning only because of talent on the field, not with play calling and game management.

  19. Aubpierce Says:

Do we still have the largest coaching staff in the NFL?

  20. Bobby M. Says:

It’s been the Bucs vs Bowles for 2 seasons….we can’t do basic stuff like have 11 guys on the field in goal line situations. His scheme is flawed with complexity that seasoned veterans can’t make sense of. Every week mediocre players look elite, mediocre QBs look capable…it’s the same broken record over and over.

  21. 941bucsfan Says:

If anyone knows any better, thats why you have defensive assistants. They send guys in and out. Sure you can burn a timeout, but he likely scores anyway..

There was a time where there were only 9 out there on special teams after the safety too. But they got it corrected

  22. D-Rome Says:

That’s clearly Baker’s fault, right guys?

  23. Buc4evr Says:

Still trying to understand why JTS could not have just pushed Ridder out of bounds…. lol.
Yeah 9 players is a mistake, defensive assistants better get their acts together. Green Bay is going to be tough and cold. No room for that kind of mistake.

  24. Mediocre Mayfield Says:

Bowles and canales need to go after this painful season is over. Can Tampa fans get Jim Harbough for Christmas

  25. HC Grover Says:

If they can beat The Pack we win the division. Carolina is a sure thing. Split Jax and Stainks and we are there. 9 and 8.

  26. Bucsalltheway Says:

They did it on purpose to save them some time to run the clock dry c’mon ppl this ain’t news it was by design…lol

  27. BucU Says:

I don’t care who we replace TB and his staff with at this point. ANYBODY will be an upgrade to this horribly prepared team since he took over as HC.

  28. Bobby Says:

Bowles needs to go back to just being a DC. But I see the Bucs making the playoffs, Bucs will, not maybe, will lose against the Packers and the Jags, will lose the next 2 games and win the final 2 games of the season. Getting into the playoffs on an 8-9 record. How sad is that, really. The NFL should change the rules to where the best W-L records get into the playoffs, not a rep from every division. The Bucs do not deserve to even be in the playoff conversation at this point. But Bucs will get in and we will have Bowles again next season as our HC. Oh how fun it is to be a Bucs fan.

  29. LongSeason Says:

If not for a little of help, the Bucs would be eliminated from playoff contention.
First and foremost was Koo missing two field goals he should have made.
Second is the fumble by White. Watched that play several times and it looked like the defender got his left arm around the football first. Then White wrapped his arms around the football. My opinion was this was a recovery by Atlanta.
    Yes. We should have lost.
Looking at the Falcons coverage, they know how to play zone. They seamlessly passed off receivers from their zone to the next zone creating bracketed Bucs.
We can’t do that. We blow that kind of coverage.
Baker can’t look beyond his first read. On one incomplete pass to Godwin, Evans was breaking open beyond the defensive back. Instead Baker throws into tight coverage. I have seen enough of that a-hole. Trask may not be mush better but I am not sure how much worse he can be.
I will give props to the O-Line, Backs and the running game. We have been running the ball better the last three games.
    Against
    Dolts 19 attempts 125 yards 6.5 ypc
    Panzers 34 attempts 133 yards 3.9 ypc
Tweety Birds 37 attempts 148 yards 4 ypc
That is a dang sight better than the 3.1 we were getting before. Where I was highly critical I must be fair and praise where praise is earned.
Shout of to Zyon for most of the game. He looks to be getting better. Still a way to go, but getting better.
    Winfield is just a BEAST!
CD24 getting that pick was a huge play.

  30. orlbucfan Says:

Rolling my eyes. I knew Atlanta had a ton of lucky breaks. If this is true, count it as one out of many. They still lost. They played hard, too. Hey Bobby, you should have been a Bucs fan during the 1980s and early 1990s. You have no idea what you’re talking about!

  32. Smashsquatch Says:

Nine on the field? Nine? And this is pro football? Wtf!

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Next coach is also Todd. Monken. Please.

  34. MarkV Says:

To quote you, Joe, on one of your articles written yesterday, “this was the kind of football Team Glazer signed up when they hired Bowels”. I’ll prepared and poorly coached… That’s the way I see it, and I hope we move on from this clown show before we have a repeat of the lost decade.

  35. Boss Says:

maybe this is what they mean when they sat do more with less

you go with yo bad self toilet bowl

  36. Jeff Says:

This coaching staff is trash. If Clueless Todd is not fired, the Glazers must push Todd to bring in help.

  37. Jack Clark Says:

Todd Bowles needs to hire a DC so he can focus on being a head coach instead of trying to do two different jobs at the same time. As HC, Todd Bowles should be focused on managing the game, motivating players on the sidelines, using timeouts appropriately, challenging plays, personnel groupings, making sure there are 11 players on the field, making adjustments on offense AND defense, deciding when to take a risks ect. Todd Bowles needs to take the next step in being a head coach by developing his DCs and OCs to become head coaches.

  38. Jfgobucs Says:

How many coaches do we employee ?

  39. Saskbucs Says:

Todd is fired. He has to be. Glazers are just playing out the string.

  40. fishhawkbucu Says:

Give the man a break. He had the challenge flag in his right hand and was unable use his digit to get to 10+1

  41. Architek Says:

    Second week in a row!!!

  42. ocala Says:

He is an awful coach. If the Bucs somehow pull off winning the division that should not do anything to help him keep his job. This is arguably the worst division in NFL history.

  43. stone crab sam Says:

Why didn’t a defensive captain call time out with only 9 players on the field?
    That’s unheard of.

  44. Buc4evr Says:

Todd goes 9-8 or10-7 and the Glazers keep him. Even if he loses in the first round of the playoffs, he stays. Expectations are pretty low this year. Would not be surprised to see them sign Mayfield either. lol.

  45. BoricuaBucFan Says:

They fired Gruden after clinching the division with a 9-7 record , they BETTER fire Bowles even if he wins the division this year.

  46. All_da_way Says:

It is December. How can this team be so unprepared on defense? A defense that has pro bowlers?

  47. Brandon Says:

When it was live I didn’t see any LBs… were we missing David and Britt and why?

  48. Ugotrobbed Says:

    ^^^^^^^^
Yeah, you said the Bucs would DESTROY Carolina last game and they won by 3 points at home. I guess you didn’t learn, did you? Leave the predictions to the professionals, like Rod Munch. Hahaha

  50. Tucker Says:

Atlanta had what four starters out on their oline and they outgained the bucs starters talk about that, this coaching staff is trash all the way around.

  51. adam from ny Says:

i heard there was an uber delivery from waffle house, and the 2 missing dudes ran up the tunnel real fast to scoop up the food for coach bowles, while he was busy winning the mannequin challenge on the sidelines…

but at least he got his snack 🙂

  52. Rjscheapseats Says:

“I’ll prepared and poorly coached… That’s the way I see it”
LOL – this is the intelligence level of the “FIRE BOWLES” crowd who say the same thing over and over and over.

  53. DungyDance Says:

2 weeks in a row for this. Hey, he saved his timeout though. Better not waste one on something meaningless, like allowing the other team to just walk into the end zone.

  54. zeke Says:

proving once again jason light is worst gm in the league.

  55. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

And the press asked him y not.. wish we could trade up on our press . And then followed up on how much worse can it be when ur coaches can’t count

  56. LA48 Says:

Bucs win division, lose in blow-out to Dallas. Too low of a draft position to get a transformative QB. Mayfield re-signed, Bowles kept another season because Glazers know that nobody else is gonna want to coach this team. Mediocrity ad infinitum.

  57. Daniel Says:

I don’t understand why everyone is bagging on Todd Bowles so much. Do y’all not realize how many timeouts the Bucs haven’t used this year? Those bonus timeouts are worth more than gold at the NFL awards at the end of the year.

  58. captivajim Says:

i have never seen that for a goal line stand in over 50 yrs of watching NFL games-nor in any high school games-never ….

Very unfortunately bowles will still be Bucs HC nxt yr .

  59. BillyBucco Says:

    LA48
In case you didn’t see it, Dallas crushed Philly last night to take the lead in the Division.
At this point, we would play Philly at home.

  60. unbelievable Says:

    That’s Todd Bowles for ya.

Didn’t we only have 10 guys on the field for one of Carolinas touchdowns the week before as well? Or maybe it was 2 weeks ago against the Colts?

I also recalled this happened earlier in the season against Philly or Detroit too.

Bowles is inept. The team wins in spite of him, not because of him.

  61. Lakeland Steve Says:

Unfortunately this isn’t the first time. If the Glazers want proof of an ongoing problem with the Head Coach and coaching staff this is the poster child. This should never happen let alone in a December game. We have 5,000 coaches on our staff and I’m sure someone in the press box was responsible for just that. Where was he at? The water cooler hitting on a Falcons fan? These are the things that scream out bad coaching and it starts and ends with Bowles.

  62. EEK Says:

    Falcons were rolling
They were going to score on that drive most likely, but it is painful to not have basic personnel in the game for a professional football game

More importantly, when can our D line close out a game?

  63. Irishmist Says:

If one of the missing players was JTS, I’d consider that addition by subtraction.

  64. stpetebucfan Says:

Irishmist for the win. If JTS who made a GREAT read could have backed it up with tackle that takes potentially four points off the board for Atlanta but in true JTS fashion…flash then burn and whiff on the tackle.

  65. Daniel Dream Says:

The majority of posters on this site must literally have personality disorder- they aren’t capable of shame or embarrassment. If they could see what the look like to everyone else they’d be forced to alter their behavior. All I can do is shake my head. People, get a grip.

    Name A Coach:
    -Bill Parcells
    -Bill Belichick
    -Bill Walsh
    -Bill Cowher

22x this year that penalty has been called.

Here’s a list of a few HC’s involved in those infraction.

    DEN – HC Sean Payton
    NE – HC Bill Belichick
    SEA – HC Pete Carroll
    SF – HC Kyle Shanahan
    TEN -HC Michael Vrabel

    Sooooo

  67. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Every head coach encounters these challenges, it’s a common part of the game.

Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill. However, if this starts happening more frequently, say four or five times a year, then it’s a sign of a more significant problem that needs attention.

  68. garro Says:

Played this game for many years. We occasionaly had a guy not pay attention and forget he was on the punt team and we just failed on third down. I guarantee he did not do that twice and it was never more than one dude.

What the sam hill is going on with this staff?!?

That is nuts for an NFL team! Professional players and coaches?!? On the Goal line?!?

    Geez!

    Go Bucs!

  69. garro Says:

BA would still be chewing out several people at Mercedes Benze Studio probably being forcefully restrained by folks!!!

    Just saying…

    Go Bucs!

  70. garro Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS

Umm I may be missunderstanding you but there is no “infraction” for fewer than the allowed of 11 on the field. Maybe you are thinking we had too many?
    Loved your stats though.

    Go Bucs!
