A New And Dangerous Description Of Chris Godwin

December 8th, 2023

Dissed?

Bucs fans learned this week that words matter a lot at the Godwin household, and Joe suspects a phrase dropped by a coach yesterday at One Buc Palace hit home in a very unpleasant manner.

Bucco Bruce Arians used to compare Chris Godwin to Larry Fitzgerald and Hines Ward.

Former Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter used to routinely say he had “three No. 1 receivers” when Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson and Godwin were on his roster.

Yesterday, Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales went the other direction.

While talking about Godwin’s targets, he noted that Godwin is a No. 2 receiver: “…He’s still getting targets, he’s still in the 50s in receptions. He’s a big part of what we do. If you compare that across the league, versus other No. 2 receivers, he’s still a big part of what we do.”

Joe cringed hard when the “No. 2 receivers” line came out of Canales’ mouth. So Joe can only imagine what Mr. and Mrs. Godwin might have thought.

Also, Team Glazer is paying Godwin No. 1 receiver money to the tune of $20 million per year. Joe guesses Team Glazer wasn’t a big fan of the phrasing.

Yes, “No. 2 receiver” is just a description, but the timing of it made all the sense of a Rachaad White run on 2nd-and-9.

When you lose a guy like Godwin, you will lose the entire team.

This s#!t needs to stop right now.

No more of this incompetent coaching!

Canales, just shut your rah-rah Tony Robbins Lite pie hole and start scoring some g** d*** points!

  2. FIRE TODD BOWELS Says:

The fallout from buying a super bowl is happening fast

  3. Mcruzer Says:

Chris was one of the top two reasons why we won the Super Bowl. He extended drives on 3rd downs that entire season, including the playoffs. Why we are under utilizing him is indefensible.

  4. Ed Says:

If its my choice between Godwin or Bowles/Canales, I’m in Godwin’s corner. Chris is a lion, not just because he played at Penn State but because he has sacrificed his body catching balls in traffic and taking unneccesary flagrant hits because he is not scared of getting blow up by tacklers. His YAC is sensational and if the Bucs had a coaching staff that would draw up plays for him he is a Deebo Samuels type receiver. He is most dangerous after the catch.

Chris’ wife was speaking out for all the Buc fans that are sick of this primitive offense that Mike Shula would have been proud of.

It sucks that Bowles has had nearly 2 years to get the Bucs over the 20 point per game average and he has failed. The offense is slow and QB doesn’t have easy reads.

I actually am glad Chris’ wife spoke out. Most of the Buc fans feel her frustration.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Yeah, although unintentional, it’s a diss. Evans and Godwin have always been 1a and 1b receivers in Tampa. We are seeing a difference between a legend, and a pro bowler here. They are both still hugely important and excellent players. Chris has mostly been devalued by the change in offensive philosophy and poor QB play. It’s not his fault. I hope the Bucs fix this sooner than later, but it probably won’t be until Bowles is fired and Mayfield is gone too.

  6. Mark Says:

No dispassionate observer could watch the Bucs play and conclude they are well coached on either side of the ball. Pre-snap penalties, a stubborn obsession with running the ball up the middle, long target droughts for the playmakers on offense, soft zones, pressure packages that don’t produce actual pressure, loafing by “stars” like Devin White…it all points to the head coach and their staff.

Yes, there are personnel problems as well, some of which are attributable to the huge wad of dead cap money that is the legacy of the Brady Bucs.

But how can this team possibly assess where it is personnel-wise when bad, stubborn coaching puts players out of position, and undermines their talent?

One can only imagine how this team would perform if we had a coaching staff that tailored the schemes to players’ strengths.

  7. Dan the Bucs fan Says:

He can’t open in todays NFL. I’m at every game saw him multiple times on crossing patterns where he could not get seperation from linebackers covering him. I love the guy but he isn’t the same player he was before his knee injury. If he could get open he would get the ball. I guess truth is hard to take but he just flat out can’t get open

  8. Popcorn Mike Says:

What is going on at one Bucs place. The offense is the one of the worst in the NFL, the defense is regressing, now you have in fighting. All these years Evans and Godwin has worked as a dynamic duel with no complaining and him and Evans has been almost equal in yards for several years and now they don’t even throw to him. Is it Godwin or is it Bowles trying to run a 80s offense with 2000 player personnel

  9. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Dan the Bucs fan – if Chris couldn’t get open after injury how did he catch over 100 balls less than a year after getting hurt…. Chris gets open plenty. It’s QB play and the change of philosophy that are hurting him most.

  10. Bosch Says:

There you have it. Now we truly know where the OC is coming from. If I had to choose between him and Chris, I am definitely taking Chris.

  11. Nutterbuccer Says:

It all starts with Bowles. He wants to run the ball and unwilling to adapt to not only his team but the nfl. I never hope for losses but damn if we lose to Atlanta the silver lining is their, Todd is gone. Let’s all be honest here, only reason todd is even coaching is because he rode Arians coat tails ans Arians strategically gifted him a head coaching gig. Should of stayed a def coordinator…..and Canales is just doing east he is told with a QB who is playing ultra Consevative to try and save his career anyway he can

  12. LJ's Daddy Says:

It just crushes me to hear CG talked about like this. He has done so much for this team. He is so incredibly capable to do much more. It just illuminates the detached, harebrained coaching staffs inabilities. The Godwins are poster children for class, dedication and hard work. What is the coaching staff poster children for? Hmmm…I don’t want to sink to their level. Go Bucs!

  13. Brandon Says:

I had hopes for Canales being a hot shot coordinator but my fears were realized by week 3 that he is clearly in way over his head. He scared me during training camp by his willingness to talk and share his philosophies. You usually only see that from shameless self-promoter coaches in the NFL. Most of the good ones are very generic and tight lipped about what they do. I can see he isn’t going to be one of the good ones. He’s got a ton more talent than Marcus Arroyo had but we’re getting Arroyo-like results.

He talked about play-action passing… gone since week 3.

He talked about establishing the run… he’s only established that he wants to run. He won’t, however, run off tackle, get runners out on the perimeter, or do much other than the spread give up the middle behind the guards. Clearly, our RBs are much better in space than when taking on defenders, yet he refuses to put them in a position to succeed.

He fails to use personnel groupling that dictate success. Our very average TE, Otton is on the field close to 100 % of the time. You mean to tell me that we don’t have five better receiving options than Otton on obvious passing situations?

He rarely employs presnap motion to see what coverage the defense is in.

He almost never utilizes tight stacked sets to try to attack the defense out wide… he also fails to put the receivers in bunch sets to utilize picks, rubs, and other techniques to help players get open.

The smokescreens that Brady ran into the ground are nearly out of the playbook. Smokescreens are fine, just as long as they aren’t overused constantly. Instead of using them 10+ times a game, a range of five or so, keeps the defense on its toes and slows down blitzes and the pass rush…. but we don’t run them… at all. That’s five easy completions that we aren’t getting per game.

He won’t return Godwin to the slot where he was one of the league’s best at making the tough grabs over the middle… Godwin CAN play outside… but whey would you want to when he was among the best on the inside?

I’m sure i’m leaving a few things out here, but its clear, Canales is in way over his head. I’m not a Bowles fan… but Bowles as a coordinator is 10x better than Canales…. aka Arroyo 2.0.

  14. SB~LV Says:

    Get off this team Chris!
    Ask for a trade!
You and Mike Evans deserve to go out on winning teams!
We don’t even have a quality starting quarterback!

  15. Costa Rica John Says:

Move Godwin back to the slot. Arians knew where Godwin played his best.

  16. Stanglassman Says:

Dan- How can CG catch 104 balls last year and get over 1,000 yards in a rehab year and the following year while healthy suddenly get so slow he can’t get open? Mind you, he going against zone defensive schemes most if the time. Maybe he forgotten how to play the WR position too? I heard this theory and went back and watched a bunch of 2021 and 2023 All 22 film on CG and I don’t see any regression. I respect PR Scott who has this same theory but I still just don’t buy it.

CG doesn’t own his wife. Are you guys are stuck in the 1950s? Every marriage is different some people still treat their wives like chattel but these days most respect them as equals. To each their own. I’m not judging. But to assume CG’s wife isn’t allowed to express her own opinion isn’t a given. She knows more about football than any of us. She didn’t run to the press as some falsely stated. She posted some facts and her editorial on Instagram. CG said he found out after the fact and spoke to her about it. Also said he spoke to the Bucs staff. Everything he said was team first, anybody’s opinion otherwise is making stuff up for clicks and or attention

  17. Louis Friend Says:

Any of you idiots complaining about what Canales said is in denial. I wouldn’t take Godwin over or say he’s equal to the top WR’s in football – including Mike Evans.

He isn’t the same player as he was before 2022. Since last season he’s more of a possession WR – he doesn’t get separation and his speed is average. I think he’s got the heart of a lion but his body has been battered, broken and bruised too much to say he’s anyone’s WR 1.

  18. Marine Buc Says:

Godwin is getting paid $27.5M in 2024…

    Money well spent?

Seems like the Bucs have several contracts that didn’t work out too well –

    – Shaq Barrett
    – C. Davis
    – J. Dean
    – R. Jenson
    – R. Gage
    – Godwin

All seem like a huge waste of limited salary cap dollars this season.

  19. T. McGee Says:

Godwin could go to the Lions and be a 1 or 1b with St Brown and be a star. This is a mess.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Dan the Bucs fan … ‘I’m at every game saw him multiple times on crossing patterns where he could not get separation from linebackers covering him. I love the guy but he isn’t the same player he was before his knee injury.’

Interesting take Dan. I admit I haven’t gone to any games this season, but watching on TV that appears to be true some of the time, but certainly not all the time (I’ve seem plenty of times when Chris had more than a couple of steps on the defender covering him). On a LOT of those though Chris is running out-routes with a trailing defender (he’s very very good IMO approaching the sidelines).

Personally I think the media is exaggerating this issue. BIG TIME. Bucs have had 438 passing opportunities thus far this season (if you count Baker’s 27 sacks as passing opportunities, which they most likely were). Chris has been targeted 85 times … 19.4% of our passing plays.

Contrast that with 2022 when Tom Brady was his QB. Bucs had 773 passing opportunities (counting Brady’s 22 sacks). Chris was targeted 142 times (in 15 games played) … 18.4% of our passing plays.

Back in 2021 Bucs had 754 passing opportunities (counting 23 sacks). Chris was targeted 127 times (in 14 games played) … 16.8% of our passing plays.

Going back even further to 2020, Bucs had 648 passing opportunities (counting 22 sacks) but the season was only 16 games. Chris was targeted 84 times (in 12 games played) … 13.0% of our passing plays.

So starting in 2020, Chris has gotten a bigger & bigger share of each season’s passing opportunities … 13.0% to 16.8% to 18.4% to 19.4% this year. Kinda makes me wonder what all the fuss is about. Oh wait, I forgot, we’re a losing team and losing teams fuss a lot.

  21. Craig Says:

Godwin has been getting as open as he was for Brady.

For some reason, maybe the vertical limitation, the QB is not seeing him. There have been a few other open receivers that have been totally overlooked.

As the offense stands now, Godwin will remain an afterthought. That might change after Sunday in Atlanta.

  22. Since76 Says:

What morons. This coaching staff needs to go. If Canales doesn’t know how to call a play that gets the ball to Godwin he needs to go. If he’s using a Quarterback that can’t throw the ball to him (for whatever reason) he needs to go. Tired of the disfunction/excuses/ but most of all the boring high school offensive game plan.

  23. A Bucs Fan Says:

@DR good analysis you’re just missing that CG’s catch % is under 70% for the first time since 2019. He’s had over 30 uncatchable targets out of his 85 targets this season. That number factors his two drops on the season too.

  24. sasquatch Says:

He’s #2. There’s no shame in that when the #1 is Mike Evans. Non-story.

  25. Oz Len Says:

Why don’t one of you stat heads look it up and tell us how many first downs he’s cost us by dropping balls that hit his hands.

  26. Winny Testaverde Says:

“Can do” Canales trying to dig himself outta the hole through the bottom. He needs to be selling timeshares…not coordinating a NFL offense. The season is circling the Bowles so to speak. Atlanta by double digits.

  27. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Oz Len – I can’t get that specific, but Chris has only 17 drops on 656 targets in his career which is a 2% drop rate. One analysis states that the % for catchable drops across the NFL from 2016-23 is 6.7% so by that metric Chris has excellent hands.

    * with the exception of the 2020 playoffs where he noticeably struggled after returning from a surgical repaired finger.

  28. Danny Husak Says:

Just blame Baker. Everyone else did. If it wasn’t for bad luck, he’d still be searching for ANY kind of luck…………..

  29. Frank Pillow Says:

Canales has all the maturity, wisdom and sophistication of Twitter. The depth of a sound bite. Play calling acumen that makes us long for Marcus Arroyo. Godwin is a heart and soul player. A proven winner. The ultimate team first guy. How about owning your stuff, coach?

No Sirrrrrr. Our players are the constant. The coaches are the variables. With Chris and Mike and Devonte and Antoine and Will, these guys have given us something to hope for during the Jameis, Glennon and McKown years. We’re not giving him up because a temporary coaching staff doesn’t know how to get the most of his value. Chris!! We know what you can do! Every REAL Buc fan has your back. Hang in there Better coaching is coming.
If the Glaziers have to choose between you and this “coaching staff” I think they will choose the character you bring over the Bowles babbly double talk. Hang in there Chris!
We also know your QB can’t get past the second progression and can’t see you in your routes.

Baker’s incompetent mediocrity is causing problems.

Not unforeseen. We shouted from the rooftops this stuff would happen but noooo nobody would listen.

Now we have the Baker isn’t the problem crowd creating a phalanx to shield him from any criticism the blame is falling on places it shouldn’t be and the issue is snowballing

Godwin is a star receiver and Mayfield can’t find him because he’s too busy trying to be the guys who gets Evans the big season and thus the big contract. I guess you would call that the game within the game.

It works when you’re a playoff team, but when you’re 5-7 not so much.

The more leadership runs cover for Mayfield’s inadequacies the more it’s going to rock the boat and we’re getting a glimpse now at the edifice cracking. Inside the locker room I’m sure these grown men know Bowles and Baker are dead men walking. They aren’t coming back. What’s outstanding is how Trask is going to figure into the mix in 2024.

There are a number of people with hands on the current controls who staked their future on Baker (foolishly). Going to Trask is like the color of smoke changing at the Vatican. Joe says going 5-8 will force that decision. When it happens who knows how the team will respond?

Will they be energized or will they mail it in? It appears a good portion of the team is sick of putting their neck on the line trying to get Mayfield a contract seeing that he has real limitations in his game.

We told this would blow up in everyone’s faces. We told you. You didn’t listen. Mayfield was never the answer and instead of getting Trask reps and building towards the future, we all had to humor Bowles ambition. Now we have discord and looming coach firings.

My argument against Baker ended the moment he was officially made the starter. However, I now feel completely hood winked by Todds bias and lack of accountability and player evaluation skills. I imagine the players and other coaches have similar feelings.

Although it was apparent that Baker was no better statistically than Winston and lacks the upside Winston still has. I said it then and I will say it now. I would rather have Winston back vs Baker. I think Chris and Mike would most likely agree.

When you have a QB (Baker) who is 4-24 when attempting 34plus passes a game. In today’s NFL, that means you don’t have a QB.

#StartKyleTrask before the entire team has mailed it in for the year. Most importantly, Chris and Mike.

so why would I ever leave where my pointer gets the most fun?

Few of you use your noggin. Don’t like baker? fine ( good chance even if the bucs want him he won’t reupp ) but this stupidity that you would forgo drafting a QB high based on whatever kyle shows against mostly scrubs left on the schedule is asinine. SO common sense says the bucs go for a QB as high as they can get regardless

That being the case there’s little reason for the Glazers to dictate anything about Trask this season . Let Bowles play out his way and you have a whole training camp and preseason to evaluate the new QB and trask

then maybe just maybe he won’t SUCK

  51. Defense Rules Says:

A Bucs Fan … ‘DR good analysis you’re just missing that CG’s catch % is under 70% for the first time since 2019. He’s had over 30 uncatchable targets out of his 85 targets this season.’

Thought about including that, but that’s a whole different analysis. The stories thus far haven’t been focusing on Godwin’s CATCHES; they’re been about the TARGETS that he’s been getting in the passing game (opportunities). And the reality is that he’s getting a HIGHER PERCENTAGE of the passes this year than in years past. That’s the opposite to what others are contending.

You’re exactly right though in that Chris’ catch percentage is WAAAY DOWN to 62.4% thus far this year. That’s alarming to me, because that’s NOT very Chris Godwin-like. His CAREER average is 70.4%, much higher than this season. But look at what he did when Tom Brady was his QB …

    o 2022 – 73.2%
    o 2021 – 77.2%
    o 2020 – 77.4%

Those numbers are dramatically higher than what he’s got currently (like 10% to almost 15% higher). He was even up at 71.1% catch percentage back in 2019 when Jameis was his QB (the very 1st year of BA’s reign).

But then look at his 2 years PRIOR to BA when Dirk Koetter was in charge:

    o 2018 – 62.1%
    o 2017 – 61.8%

See a trend? The questions that DOESN’T answer are: (1) Is Godwin’s catch percentage way down because of Baker Mayfield’s accuracy in getting him the ball? OR (2) Is Godwin’s catch percentage down because of how he’s being used in the passing game? OR (3) Is Chris Godwin just slipping as a receiver?

I’m sure there are some who’ll say we should throw in a #4 option: All of the Above?

  52. BillyBucco Says:

DR I don’t think he LIKES catching balls from Baker Mayfield.
Of course several times this year, Baker has looked ultra mechanical when throwing quick slants to him. Just looks unnatural.
I wouldn’t say Baker is accurate either.
What one guy says is a catchable ball, another guy laughs at.
It’s clear to me Baker looks to ME to BAIL him out, when is pressured like Winston did as well.
Difference is Baker scrambles with his HEAD DOWN.
You can give all the stats you want about a tall QB getting passes batted down and a short QB not, lime a Drew Brees, but those are exceptions and not reality.
Baker is a midget, who makes it worse by NOT keeping his head on a swivel.
He is NOT the answer in Tampa.

  53. ATLBuc Says:

If things were the other way around and Bowles started Trask from the beginning of the season, and we were 5-7 and Kyle was playing like garbage, most of us who wants to see Kyle play, would be saying, “It’s time to give Baker a shot”. But it’s something about these Mayfield fans that they don’t seem to care about this team winning or losing or future. All they want is for Baker to play and for no one to criticize him.
We have lost 6 out out last 7 games. Our QB any get the ball to our second best receiver. Our offense is bad. Our qb has thrown an interception in the last 4 games. Our qb doesn’t see receivers running wide open. And our head coach who was afraid to go for it on 4th and 1 AND afraid to try a 59 yard FG, is too afraid to put in the better QB because it will expose his incompetence. The better Trask looks, the worse Bowles looks. So we can probably forget about seeing Trask unless Baker gets hurt or a command comes down from on high.

  54. m Says:

i was watching you tube videos of Tom Brady when he was with the bucs and Chris was a different guy, they’ve diminished him for sure

  55. Defense Rules Says:

BillyBucco … ‘Difference is Baker scrambles with his HEAD DOWN.’

Interesting observation because I thought I was seeing much the same thing the past few games (hadn’t been looking for it before). Watch Patrick Mahomes when he scrambles (which he does a LOT). He’s always looking down the field to see if there’s a play to be made. Sometimes there is; sometimes nada (he gets sacked about 1.5 times a game on the average). Sometimes he just takes off (not bad since he’s averaging almost 6 YPC per run).

Baker’s different though. Rarely does he scramble it seems to open up a play down the field (to buy time IOW). Usually he scrambles out of a sense of SURVIVAL it seems (it’s always good to live to fight another day). And when he does scramble like that, it appears to me that he’s looking SHORT most of the time to see who he can dump the ball off to. I obviously agree with you; he’s NOT the answer in Tampa. Have no idea IF Trask or Wolford are any better, but I sure would like to find out BEFORE next season.

Malarkey – Baker is literally known for moving the pocket and striking down field. Its all over his highlights which anyone can watch on youtube.

  57. Oz Len Says:

A Bucs Fan: Thanks for the answer. I wouldn’t even know how to put that stuff together so nice job, Godwin is a great receiver, no doubt. I guess my point is that he has dropped 3-First Downs in the last 2-weeks. I know he’s fighting a neck injury and apparently, he had a knee injury last year. Also, it’s apparent he’s not the top option when the QB goes through his reads and that the current coaching staff considers him the number-2 receiver.

Yeah, I guess saying Godwin is #1 WR and Evans is #2 WR would have come across as so much better. Then it would be SEE YA from Evans after this season! Then the entire “JBF GM” crowd will be P!iss!ng And Moaning, WHY???? Can not have it both ways, ya just can not.

If DC can’t see what CG brings to the table then either his eye site is failing him or he’s repeating another TBism in order to save his gig. Probably the latter. TB must go! The sooner the better!!

Tony Marks … Apparently we’re just seeing different things, because I seem to remember a LOT of dump-offs to White & others as he’s scrambling. Tell you what, keep an eye out for that this weekend when we play Atlanta & so will I. I’d be interested to see which is closer to what’s really happening on the field.

  62. Hopalong Bucco Says:

To all the above fans, just relax and understand that the problem may well lie with the Glazers. A concerned owner would certainly realize that his entire payroll is being “stolen” by too many of the players, all of the coaches and perhaps the GM and his scouting staff. There is a simple solution to all this BS and it starts with getting rid of them all. Clean sweepdown fore and aft as they say in the Navy!!!

I would imagine if he had already concluded there was going to be no pass, best to keep your head down and not get beheaded by a linebacker

I don’t know what NFL you are watching but its very rare for a Qb thats just did a 360 spin and duck to avoid a sack and with a player two steps behind him to pull back his arm and go deep. If thar were so common those wouldn’t be highlight plays on ESPN

I have no idea what Canales calls for Baker to do in those circumstance and neither do you. but no I don’t have to wait for Sunday. Like I said anyone can go look up Baker in cleveland and see him do it multiple times.

Now those tend to happen on horizontal scrambles. If you are moving verticallly then sure you target open RB and pick up the yardage. running vertical and throwing long has consistent accurately for no one.

  65. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Godwin shoulda used his 5th amendment right, and refused to answer any questions about what someone else said.

Problem solved, done deal, he can’t speak for what someone is thinking.

    Next question.

    ———————

When Trask came in 2 weeks ago the Baker fans wanted him to do well – because it’s about the team, first and foremost.

How many Traskies want Baker to succeed on Sunday?

  67. CrackerBall Says:

What is all the fuss about? There can only be one #1 WR, and that is clearly Mike Evans on this team. It should be motivating Godwin to get healthy and regain his prior level of play, and not offend him (*which I have only heard here by commenters, and nothing like that coming directly from him).
