“We Should Be Able To Score Closer To 30 Each Game.”

November 15th, 2023

Baker Mayfield speaks.

How good can the Buccaneers’ offense be?

Baker Mayfield put a number on it today. “We should be able to score closer to 30 each game,” he said at One Buc Palace.

Mayfield also threw out another number, “20,” when he referenced the Bucs’ current scoring average. In fact, the Bucs are scoring 19.8 points per game, which ranks 22nd in the NFL.

That’s not as horrible as it sounds overall considering it’s been a season for defense across the NFL. A whopping 15 teams are allowing 20 points or less this season. For those who forgot, the Bucs scored 18 points per game with Tom Brady last season.

Joe, sadly, has to disagree with Mayfield. The Bucs’ ceiling on offense is probably more like an average of 24 points per game, nowhere near 30.

With no running game and paltry production from the Tampa Bay tight ends (only 28 yards per game) it’s unreasonable to think the Bucs can light up the scoreboard with the NFL’s best offenses.

But as Mayfield noted, with the Bucs’ solid defense, the offense doesn’t have to set the world on fire to win games.

  1. Since76 Says:

Mr Mayfield. How about setting the offense on fire once against a good defense. Once!!!

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

I agree Joe 30 pts equal 4td and 1 fg (31 pts) or 3 tds and 3 fg, That is a lot of offensive output.

  3. Oneilbuc Says:

We have a quarterback that depends on pis to move the ball Baker Mayfield ain’t helping this offense get 30 points especially against the 49ers . He couldn’t even get 28 points against the Falcons and the Titans so what makes you think they would score 30 points against the 49ers ? Lol 🤣🤣

  4. David Says:

Baker’s losing record mainly against good teams speaks for itself. He needs to score at least four Td’s for Bucs to have a chance to beat 49er’s. Sorry Baker I forgot you haven’t thrown 4 Td’s in a game and nearly broke 300 yards once this season.
The king of Dink and Dunk. You will be forced to play above your trash level this Sunday to beat a good team. We all know that wouldn’t happen either.

  5. K_bassuka Says:

The plays are there. We are only missing a QB that can accurately connect on the deep ball and can see over the linemen.

  6. Obvious Says:

    Shoulda scored 30? Nah
    Woulda scored 30? Nah
Coulda scored 30? No. Not this year

Canales needs a couple more seasons to start to sort of get there and the team doesn’t have the offensive horses to bully it through with Pure physicality. Not even close or we would have done it more than once. 20 is Not 30 and 19.8 Is Not 20….

Now “IF” our defense decides it’s DONE with being embarrassed… Maybe

    Dare to Dream. Why Not.

    GO BUCS!

  7. Abovedalaw Says:

I’ve been watching some of the games and while I’m no expert I think it’s the running plays on every first and second down where they gain no yards that are doing them in. The passing plays where they sometimes get yards seem to be a better use of the effort. And the idea that you need the run to set up the pass doesn’t work when you run 100% of the time on first and second down, and can’t really do it at all. The concept only works when there’s some unpredictability.

  8. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

Don’t shoot for the trees. Shoot for the stars. You can always reach the trees.

  9. Curse of Gruden Says:

If they play the Titans every week, yes.

  10. Seattle Buc Says:

Welp, we’re more than halfway through the season and we’re nowhere near 30. Time for a change? Nah. Too many reputations at risk.

  11. Buc4evr Says:

If Canales opens up the offense and with decent play calling maybe we can get to 30 points. But stupid repetitive inside running plays are not going to get it done. This offense plays not to lose. It needs to play to win.

  12. WyomingJoe Says:

I disagree with Joe’s “opinion” on Tampa’s offense having a ceiling of 24. That’s a low number. But my overall question is: Why do so many of the Bucs “fans” on this site suck so much? Is it because they’re losers, or is it because they’re still crying over Trask? Or both?

  13. adam from ny Says:

    23-24 points a game would be cool…

gotta take a td off that 30 piece

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

the offense doesn’t have to set the world on fire to win games.-
They will have to this Sunday vs 49ers if they want a win.
Believe it or not, Mayfield’s stats this season are comparable to Burrow’s and Lawrence’s.
The OLine has a tough assignment this week- Canales’ biggest test this year

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Really gotta give David and Seattle Bucs credit….while most of the Trask stans fled the ship and went back in hiding, they are still on here spewing their nonsense daily.

Don’t worry guys more loser fans will re join you the 2d Baker throws an incomplete pass on Sunday.

  16. JD Still Says:

We have the talent on this team to score 30 points a game, but, we can’t continue to have 3 and outs continually throughout the game and putting the ball in the oppositions hands for a quarter more than we control the ball, ( 37 minutes vs 22 minutes , try to score 30 points in 22 minutes, straight ahead running won’t do it ) , receivers are our strength , with Evans, Godwin, White Otton, Palmer , Thompkins, and quite a few more , we could rotate them in , spread the defense out ,and run their entire defense ragged , we also have the offensive line to give the right quarterback the needed time ,but , We would have to have a quarterback that can see the whole field and can get the ball short and long , over the middle without being batted down , who can hit sideline passes and deep passes , get the defense back on their heels , then run draws , screens , picks , and reverses, and if one of those plays fail can still put the ball anywhere to get the required yardage, or if necessary has the size say, 6 foot 5 and 230 pounds to pick up short yardage, yup we have the players with the size and speed to get it done, all we need is a quarterback who can get the ball to them.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Mayfield also threw out another number, “20,” when he referenced the Bucs’ current scoring average.’

Mayfield … “We should be able to score closer to 30 each game.”

Bucs have scored over 20 points in only 3 of our 9 games (Bears, Saints, Texans). They’ve scored 30 or more points in only 1 game (Texans … a loss). The only reason we’re even averaging close to 20 PPG is because the Texans’ defense really sucks (the 37 points we scored in that game upped our per game average by 2 PPG).

This is not a 30 PPG team, nor is Baker Mayfield the next Tom Brady. Dink-and-dunk offenses don’t produce 30 PPG. Teams with the worst running attack in the NFL don’t produce 30 PPG either.

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

“But as Mayfield noted, with the Bucs’ solid defense, the offense doesn’t have to set the world on fire to win games”

Is this the same “solid defense” that got a rookie quarterbacks jersey sent to the hall of fame a week ago?

There’s nothing solid about this defense.

  19. Voice of Truth Says:

Someone has to help these guys self scout – they run in 2nd and long 99% of the time right up the gut with no lead blocker, ever

If they would mix up 1st and 2nd down more we would immediately be more effective and score more

Brate is spot on also – this O should go thru Godwin – 2nd and 8 should be Godwin not white for 2 yards behind the G – CG should catch 110 balls a season, 80 for Mike – similar yardage at the end of the year

Last thing on the run game – how do they not notice that when they run off tackle and sweep plays we are 100% more effective?

Wirfs and Luke are the best run blockers right now, we should be running outside way more and pulling the G’s that cannot drive block but have excellent movement skills — Mauch can move so can Stinnie – OMG use them correctly!!!

White is a slasher not a power back, why do you think he excels in the open field in the pass game?? Run him wide please!!!!!!!!

A high school coach can see this stuff how come they don’t???????

  20. Rod Munch Says:

You’re going to need to throw for more than 250 yards and 2 TDs on a banner week to get to 30 points.

Keep throwing it downfield to Evans, however, that’s the #1 way to score, all you need to do is get it fairly close.

Also, while I didn’t mind the 3rd down INT, it was literally just as good as a good punt, I’d suggest NOT throwing to Thompkins when he’s tripled covered.

Finally, if I may make a comment without the Baker Bois throwing a fit – I think Mayfield needs to do a better job of understanding he’s more limited than he thinks he is. He’s a mobile QB and has done a good job of escaping in situations, but he also seems to think he’s Lamar Jackson and can outrun defenders – he can’t. Just pick up yards if you can, but on 3rd and 9, don’t think you’re going to outrun a LB to the 1st down marker, only to have them tackle you for a 2 yard gain. Also, Baker, I don’t think your arm is as good as you think it is. So far, this year, nearly every deep pass has been underthrown – not sure what is happening since you’re supposed to have a very good arm, but you need to adjust your timing a bit. That is meant as constructive criticism.

  21. BAKERSBucs Says:

Wyoming joe u r well spoken there r a bunch of tards on this site.david says nonsense with such hatred what a loser I wud love to see that big mouth on the playing field then baker can spiral 1 down that douche bags mouth.shut him up once & for all why is that creep on this site?

  22. BAKERSBucs Says:

He has had 9 games with bucs it takes time for the timing to hit those bombs they are already talking about extending bakers contract obviously the front office sees good things out of mayfield cause come March baker will have options other than 5 other teams set in qb position but way to many teams with big problems with qb & most rookies r gambles we will see

  23. westernbuc Says:

We can manufacture a run game with short passes to White. We should be passing more because that’s the only dimension that works

  24. Rod Munch Says:

BAKERSBucs – LOL! No one is talking about extending his contract. That is fake news, junior.

  25. BAKERSBucs Says:

Blah, blah, blah same old talk,David says I wud rather have a losing record than actually be a loser like u (DAVID)

  26. D Cone Says:

Averaging 4.5 punts a game and a turnover differential of 1 a game.
With those 5 possessions. One more 1st down could mean an extra Field Goal. Add that to a TD in the Red Zone instead of a Field Goal. That’s 27 if you round up the current 19.8
30 points is attainable but each and every game I just don’t see it.
7 extra points would have made the difference wit( the Falcons and Bills.
Could easily be sitting at 6-3 and not 4-5 but then ‘could have been’ 9-0 too.
There will always be should have, would have, and could have’s.
As long as they don’t hit a rash of turnovers or a run of bad breaks Bucs should at the minimum finish with the 7th best record in the NFC.

  27. Tony Marks Says:

    JD Still Says:

receivers are our strength , with Evans, Godwin, White Otton, Palmer , Thompkins, and quite a few more , we could rotate them in , spread the defense out

    —-

I’m literally shaking with laughter as I write this. Who needs late night TV? All the comedy is in here

Including Otton and Thompkins as strength of our receivers

haha….. You just can’t make this level of comedy up

Bucs have two offensive weapons — I’ll give you maybe two a half if white can keep up catching ( cause he aint catching even a late bus on three wheels with his running)

    and that IT!

All this delusional nonsense about how the team is so loaded with talent is just that

    laughably delusional. 🙂

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

At this point, I’m only watching the games out of loyalty.

This issue isn’t Dave Canalas. The issue isn’t the defense.

Baker Mayfield is the issue…and no matter how much denial some here suffer, the truths are this:

    – Mayfield has a career losing record of more than 60%
    – Mayfield had one okay season in his entire carreer, and that is why his losing record isn’t worse
    – Mayfield is NOT accurate. He overthrows deep so bad that the recievers cannot even draw interference calls most of the time
    – His release is so low they are tipped multiple times per game, and it is pure LUCK that those tips have not turned into turnovers. He can’t stay lucky forever
    – Mayfield cannot sustain long drives, which causes our defense to get gassed early in every single game. THAT is why we lose games too
    – Mayfield has little chance of beating a team like the 49ers…get real. He has already proven he cannot lead this team to victory against good games.
    – After this game, we will be back at a losing record…that is what Mayfield does…he teases .500 then blows it
    – All of the above is 100% true.

So, even if a losing record is good enough to win this horrible devision at the end of the year and get us into the playoffs, because he can’t beat a good team, the only thing it will get us is a later pick in the draft.

So, that brings us to Kyle Trask.

Now, sure, he has been denied advancement. In truth, it might be because he isn’t any good.

Or it can be because Arians was old and didn’t have time to start fresh with a rookie, and Bowles knew he would be on a hot seat so he wanted a veteran because he also did not have time to start fresh.

We know that Trask performed better than Mayfield in training camp, yet still was not given the starting role in the ‘competition’.

We know that after losing 4 in a row, Bowles still refused to bench Mayfield.

Why? Don’t try to say it’s because Bowles thinks the QB who out performed Mayfield can’t do better. That is a crock.

Pride. That’s the reason. He’s going to sacrifice the team over his refusal to admit he made the wrong choice.

And the Glazers are the type of owners to let it play out so they can fire him at the end of the season.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

My prediction to who our next coach is?

    Rod Munch Says:

Also, Baker, I don’t think your arm is as good as you think it is. So far, this year, nearly every deep pass has been underthrown
    ——-

What really clinches how weak an arm he has was that bomb hail marry that fell right next to Godwin…… I suppose short? lolol

Mush I would have given you a comedy tie with JD for the evening on that but you addressing Baker directly for nearly a paragraph like he is here on the blog listening to you (or would care about your opinion) – puts your comedy hail mary above Jd’s outstretched hands for the win.

Just make sure you turn like Godwin didn’t 🙂

  31. Old School Bucs Says:

Wow! The weakask team beats a 3-5 team and they are talking like they are actually great. Hey, I got news for you, until you fix your Oline you will never be better than a 500 team. 30 a game? 🤣😂😭😂🤣😂😭😂🤣😂😭😂🤣😂😭

  32. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

We got 37 against the Texans and we left quite a few points out there and had some drives end prematurely or we coulda scored 50.

And if Evans didn’t have any drops this year, we’d be averaging a few more points per game right now and Baker would have like 3-5 more TD passes.

    But I digress…

    —–
Bonzai, this is next level stupidity even for you.

Explain how a defense thats statistically the 4th worst pass defense in the NFL isn’t an issues?

You obviously don’t watch the games due to you Baker Mayfield hate so let me fill you in, the Bucs have 0 pass rush, they have a strong safety that’s the worst in the league, their highest paid corner Carlton Davis just got lit up for 120 yards and 3 TDs…..

So none of thats an issue? You are a sad sad fan if your blaming everything on Mayfield, the QB who’s by all accounts exceeded expectations and has the 12TH highest QB rating in the NFL. (1 spot behind Mahomes)

Also please explain how “we know Trask outpreformed Mayfield in training camp”….this is a fake narrative when it was obvious Mayfield looked much sharper in the pre season games and 2d half of camp while Trask struggled to move the ball and score points. Remember his interception where he lobbed a pass over the middle right to the defender? But yeah “he won” lmao

Mayfield has made you look like an idiot when you called for his benching in the 1st quarter of the Vikings game and last game (check the archives) and he will continue to do so.

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

    Bonzi,
    Dude- whats happened to you?
Rooting for Trask is horrible. But meybe you went to Florida.
    But Belacheck?
My God he is, and had been, a POS. Coach.
Only thing hes ever done right, was shut up and let Tom Brady run the team.
God forbid he ever coach my beloved Bucs.
Id rather stick with Bowles. At least he is a great DC.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Tony Marks – I can always count on the Baker Bois to show up and be fake offended by something.

Anywho, stupid, I didn’t say he has a weak arm, he just doesn’t have that A+ arm he thinks he has. If you disagree, please explain in detail, using statistical models to back up your point, maybe some NextGen stats perhaps. I’ll await your answer.

  36. Tony Marks Says:

    Rod Munch Says:

I didn’t say he has a weak arm, he just doesn’t have that A+ arm he thinks he has.

    —-

Lol…stop or you are going to make my sides hurt. 🙂

Munsch is actually trying to save himself from his latest mental blunder by appealing to an argument based on clairvoyance (that he knows what Baker THINKS). turn off the TV If you are on the east coast. Late night can’t match this comedy!!!!

GO ahead rod. tell us how you mind read the A+ arm Baker think he has because I have NEVER heard or read Baker rate his arm as either A+ or top in the league

Little tip – if you are going to call someone stupid ( like an insane person calling someone insane – always a compliment) at LEAST don’t make such a fool of yourself by demonstrating your own lack of mental acuity in the process.

Making an argument based not on actual arm strength but on what someone THINKs who you have not even met is worse and just digs your hole deeper. Thats NEARLY as bad as your “its 2023 we don’t need RBs” comment “because we can run in the air”

    Almost…..

  37. Proudbucsfan Says:

Wyoming Joe Maybe you can coach Mayfield to get rid of the ball faster and hit open receivers that have at least one full step of separation or more, he holds the ball way too long. There is no way he is going to be able to escape the 49ers pass rush, I’m not bashing him it’s facts and that accuracy for a professional quarterback is detrimental.his anticipatory throws are non existent. I’m a Bucs fan and I support my team whoever is out on the field wearing pewter and red. I want this team to succeed so I’m rooting for mayfield to win. I also see enough in him to know he’s not the long term answer at quarterback. If he gets better and proves me wrong I’ll be happy to eat crow. But I’m not going to be so biased it makes me delusional. The hate for Kyle trask is ridiculous. The kid played well in college was a Heisman hopeful that’s why we drafted him. He has not had a chance, why hate on the kid ? He’s on this team as a buccaneer, and everyone should support him if you are a fan of this organization. I know it would make me 🤮 if he were to go to another team and become a superstar. I’ve been a Buccaneer fan my whole life 47 years and I earned it.

if you don’t support him you’re not a buccaneer fan.

  38. Saedron Says:

    trask blah blah blah

if you don’t support him you’re not a buccaneer fan.

    —–

Nothing makes for delusional than making delusional analysis thinking its rational. You are actively bashing your starting Qb and advocating he be replaced by a guy that has done nothing in the NFL

with a total of 23 yards at 33%…… during a race for the play offs.

who wasn’t even good enough to make the back up but is mostly a career third stringer, who multiple teams have evaluated and passed on during the first round, Who failed to improve for two years, who got a shot at being a starter and lost the competition.

Fans don’t argue for a trial while their team is in contention for the playoffs. That makes you a Trask fan not a buc’s fan – there are no lifetime memberships. Meanwhile Trask is under contract for another year. Nothing is being lost.

Fact: Baker Mayfield ACTUALLY took a team from a historical losing streak to a playoff contender

He thus was the so called “the answer” for a team already.

Its fine to have team favorites but to actually write like you are trembling at the idea of Kyle being a superstar with some other team is whats CLEARLY delusional. Kyle is still young and has a shot during next off season. Hope he does well ( its no given even if bucs want to that Baker will re up). The other silliness is thinking 2nd rounders are supposed to get an extended period of games starting. Not even first rounders get that right. You claim to have followed the NFL for four decades. but you make the arguments of a first year NFl fan.

  41. Proudbucsfan Says:

First of all mister Marks did you even read what I wrote or do you just want to argue with someone? I do support Mayfield and I do want him to win and every true buccaneer fan has the right to air there’s grievance about what they think is wrong with the team. I have stated before that this team and most of the offensive players that were brought in by light are better at a down field air attack than the ground and pound game Bowles is trying to force on this team. Mayfield is playing well to his standards he is not a top 10 quarterback those are facts. I’ve been here though the years and watched Steve young leave here and become a hall of fame Quarterback. My point is Mayfield in my opinion has been getting lucky with holding onto the ball, if he starts to hit his receivers when he has the opportunity in those one to two step windows this offense will take off but so far he holds the ball to long, lucky for him he is able to escape those situations. I also was simply stating that he has not showed enough to me to not be just a game manager. That being said I do support him because he is our starting quarterback, I want to see him get better. I was stating my opinion, so Mr Marks all you do is bash people on this site. I’m not sure if your a Buccaneer fan or you are just a Mayfield fan. I for one support everyone who puts on a Buccaneer uniform.

  42. Proudbucsfan Says:

Also Mr Marks, I wasn’t advocating for Trask I was simply stating that the haters including yourself are bashing Kyle Trask why ? The kid hasn’t had a chance and he did step up this year, all the coaches and even Joe said he did a complete turnaround and didn’t even look like the same Quarterback. That kid is on this team so why put him down so much? because your bias is so strong and blinding for Mayfield you have to bash anything that is a threat to him. Mayfield is starting for this team he’s on the field for every offensive play hence the reason for being under the microscope. That being said hypothetically if Trask was starting and could make some obvious improvements I would voice my opinion then as well that’s why we have a comment section on these articles. Not for bashing everyone.

  43. Tony Marks Says:

” for one support everyone who puts on a Buccaneer uniform.”

Your posts are just like people who say they are not getting into your business right before they get into your business. Its a two step

You claim we can cite grievances as fans but you claim anyone that cites grievances regarding Trask isn’t a true fan and is a hater. You are being a hypocrite. Bashing people who don’t agree with you as non fans and haters while you complain you are being bashed and calling for the replacement of Baker while claiming you support every one wearing the uniform.

IF you support everyone wearing the uniform it includes the starters – so why is Trask a factor? Is anyone cutting him from the team? Is he not under contract next year? Who says he won’t get a shot to win the job again this offseason? NO ONE. All this nonsense talk about him not getting a chance is all based on the supposition against facts that he hasn’t gotten his chance.

He LOST the starting position in the competition. Get over it.

Every single year even first round picks don’t get passes to start. all but the QBs at the top of the draft have to earn it. Yuu aren’t seeing people hating Trask. What you are seeing is people sick and tired of so called fans like yourself that can’t get over the plain fact that he got a shot and lost.

If people stopped the incessant whining evert day about Trask within a week there be not a single push back from so called Trask haters.

and for your information Baker is now rated 14. hardly impossible that he reach 10 by the end of season so quit acting like you know what you don’t and actually support the guy wearing your uniform like you give lip service you do. There still time for you to become a bucs fan again.

  44. unbelievable Says:
