Todd “A Thousand Times” Bowles

November 30th, 2023

Yeah, yeah, Joe knows Todd Bowles likes to say, “We gotta coach it better and the players have to play it better.”

Team Glazer should fine Bowles $200 every time he says that and give the money to a fan mental health fund.

What exactly does coach it better mean? Joe translates it as coaches are not getting through to players. Something isn’t connecting well when players repeat mistakes. New errors are learning experiences. Repeat issues deserve deep scrutiny.

So that brings Joe to a new line Bowles has been repeating in interviews: “a thousand times.”

He went there on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week, as well.

“We’re in situations where we’ve done them a thousand times and we just don’t execute,” Bowles said.

“We misalinged so many times that aided [Indianapolis] in the run game that it wasn’t even funny,” Bowles said of his defense.

The “a thousand times” line came out again when Bowles talked about needing positive plays in the red zone without senseless penalties.

“We’re not getting blown out,” Bowles added. “We’re in it right to the end. We just have to make the plays to put us over the top. And maybe you don’t have your superstars to put you over the top [because of injuries], but you have guys that throughout the season have gained valuable experience that should understand what to do.”

During Joe’s football life, Joe has heard organizations say “a thousand times” that playing close games — “one-score games” — somehow means a team is close to being a winner. It doesn’t.

Joe also knows when a team repeats the same mistakes, or a head coach says his team makes several errors that are fundamental mistakes within the core of their offensive or defensive schemes, then there are serous problems.

IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT WINNING AND LOSING, IT’S ABOUT PLAYING THE GAME RIGHT AND HAVE THE PROPER MENTAL ATTITUDE! THIS TEAM IS SOOO CLOSE AND TODD BOWLES IS THE MAN TO TURN THE SHIP AROUND AND BLAZE OUR PATH TO THE SUPER BOWL! AND THAT STARTS THIS WEEKEND VS THE STINKIN’ PANTHERS AS FUTURE MVP BAKER MAYFIELD LIGHTS THEM UP FOR 500 YARDS AND 6 TDS AS WE DESTROY THEM 55-10!

    #TEAMPOSITIVE!

  2. Proudbucsfan Says:

Right on the money Joe. Bowles needs to go. We need a hard coach that calls these guys out. No more camp cupcake

  3. pmarcello Says:

on’t know about 500 yards or 6 TDs but I definitely believe Baker wants to end a mesage to the Panthers or at least their owner and hi brain trust.

  4. Pewter power Says:

Bowles is done because his team is delusional. Can’t say you should have won against the 49ers if not for key mistakes then come out and get beat by the freaking colts. Failure follows Todd Bowles everywhere without BA

  5. Dave Pear Says:

No vote of confidence coming. When the Bucs lose to the Panthies, any previous vote of confidence would have negative credibility anyway.

Bowles and Canales are two very smart dudes. What seems easy, or obvious, or straightforward to them is obviously not to the players especially the ones with lesser intellect (think of Devin White, for example). They have too much complexity in their schemes, even the “simpler” ones. So of course it’s hard to teach, and why so many details are busted. There are too many details.

Of course one detail has totally flown over Todd’s head during his entire head coaching tenure. The object of the game is to score more points than your opponent, not give up fewer points. BA/Brady understood “score more.”

Todd plays to not get blown out, but now he doesn’t have Tom to bail his ass out in the 4th quarter anymore. Without Tom, last year’s Bucs are 4-13.

Just like this year’s Bucs will be.

Good luck in your new car dealership business, Todd.

I think you can’t say you should have won when you were down by 20 points in the 4th quarter, and lost by 13.

It’s truly delusional thinking to have come away from that game feeling positive about anything because you beat the 13.5-point spread by .5-points. The fact you were a 13.5-point underdog, vs anyone, means you’re one of the worst teams in the NFL.

But the team coming out of that game, with multiple players sounding upbeat about not losing as badly as expected (by a half point), it’s remarkable how far and how fast this team has fallen. Never in a million years would this team, if Brady was here, be talking about a moral victory when they lost by 13 f—ing points. Something is seriously wrong when a team that was picked to go to the SB just one year ago, celebrating a 13-point loss.

  7. David Says:

Panthers have practice squad trash as their OL. The defense should have at least 7 sacks.Bucs have same record as Panthers since by week. That tells you how sorry Toilet Bowl with Baker are.
Baker ceiling has reached his trash level as he continue to intensify the rate of his turnovers. If Toilet Bowl and Baker can’t beat Young they needs to dump them in trash bin outside of the Bucs One Palace after the game and never see them again.

  8. David Says:

Baker fans you know trash qb days in Tampa with Toilet Bowl areover when Joe is no longer interested in those two. As he is posting articles with alternative coaches and qb’s.
Therefore stop these resign Baker talks.

  9. NJbucs23 Says:

How bad do we miss Bruce Arians and his F bombs. Man, I loved how he called out anyone at anytime. Sigh……

  10. stpetebucfan Says:

I’M CURIOUS AS TO WHY SEVERAL GUYS HERE FEEL THE NEED TO SCREAM AT US?

Do they not have enough confidence in their message to simply post it normally?
Are they that insecure or are they just pissed off at us?

I mean who doesn’t enjoy being screamed out by insecure people who need to SCREAM to feel they’re being heard?

  11. NJbucs23 Says:

Hey David I’m right with you on baker. I didn’t like the signing from beginning and didn’t understand it. Baker’s track record and the way he plays is very obvious. He will be a backup if signed anywhere next year, or out of the league.

  12. David Says:

Baker might be able to sign with XFL at the most which stands for EX-Fired-League.

  13. Sly Pirate Says:

    BOWLES CONDEMNED HIMSELF

“We’re misaligned so many times it’s not even funny.”

Misalignment is a week 1-2 issue. It gets cleaned up quickly. This isn’t a week 11 issue. When the team doesn’t know where to play, that’s bad coaching. When the team doesn’t know where to play in week 11, that’s really bad coaching.

The question is, why is Bowles still the HC?

  14. Havenbuc Says:

Bowles defense won us the Vikings game, Forced two turnovers and kept us in the Eagles game, had Detroit held to 10 pts midway through the 3rd, held ATL to 16 and we still couldn’t muster out a win. Has held every team but Hou & Ind under there scoring average. He’s coached well enough on defense to win us games. The offense is the reason why this season is down the drain & Bowles doesn’t deserve all the blame for that. We’re scapegoating guys that brought the Lombardi trophy to this city again before A QB that’s never really led a high scoring offense EVEN with Chubb doing all the heavy lifting.

  15. ChiBuc Says:

I think if you propped a cardboard cutout of Todd Bowles behind a podium and looped, “We gotta coach it better and the players have to play it better” into the mic, nobody would notice

  16. David Says:

    HavenBuc
I agree the offense with an incompetent expelled qb is the main issue. However Toilet Bowl he made and wet his own bed when he signed his loved son, Baker that he was so desperate to sign as soon as Tom B. was retired. For that reason Toile Bowl should be dismissed or at the minimum demoted to DC. Toilet Bowl soon be remembered as the latest victim of Baker. How sad it is. He be the 10 th coach.

  17. gotbbucs Says:

Getting towards the tail end of the season and guys aren’t lined up right, seriously?

Tell me the coaching staff is failing without telling me the coaching staff is failing.

  18. WyomingJoe Says:

DAVID AND CAPT’N MUNCH: I can’t believe that the two of you have soured on Baker Mayfield. Ok, ok, now you’ve moved on to Trash (sorry, I meant to say Trask). Are you sure you want to do that? When Trask came in for Baker last week all that he had to do was move the ball ONE yard. ONE yard. But guess what? He choked! Had a receiver wide open in the end zone and he shanked the throw. If we don’t make the playoffs, that play will be the reason why. Congratulations you two, you jinxed him…

  19. WyomingJoe Says:

David and Capt’n Munch: You two are going to love Justin Fields.

  20. Havenbuc Says:

Wyoming what do you have to say about the PFF chart that had Mayfield as the worst deep ball thrower in the league out of anybody with atleast 175 dropbacks??

  21. NE Fan Says:

If players consistently do NOT execute, sorry folks that’s on the coach. These are pros they’ve played the game forever and know their positions inside and out. I am not saying they cannot learn but execution is tied into discipline and motivation, both of which are not oozing out of Todd Blows.

  22. OlBoy Says:

, “We gotta coach it better and the players have to play it better.”

Can’t have one without the other, or at least, I don’t see how it is possible. If the coaching isn’t there, the playing won’t be there either. It’s coaching. Period.

  23. Cheri Says:

If they have done it a thousand times in practice, and still can’t do it in the games, there’s something wrong with the teachings, that would be the coaches, in my opinion.

  24. WyomingJoe Says:

HAVENBUC: I will reply to your question in a bit. But what does that have to do with your boy Trask chocking?

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    the issue is our trenches!!!!!

until we fix that we’ll always be in the same position….no run game and no pressure on the qb….

our first 4 picks in the draft should be OG,C,DE,DE in that order….and pick OL’s from power5 conferences

    GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Pewter power Says:

    Rod Munch
I think you can’t say you should have won when you were down by 20 points in the 4th quarter, and lost by 13.

I agree with you and it’s insane to hear Bucs talk about how they should have won that game and it was never in doubt. So we’re clear Bucs players were saying that not me

  27. Fred McNeil Says:

Like everybody else has already said, if you can’t line up correctly after 10-11 weeks either your players are just too stupid or you’re a lousy teacher. Honestly, if your assignments are too complicated common sense dictates you simplify things a bit. I mean a Pop Warner designed defense, properly executed, is going to work better than a NASA designed defense executed by the Keystone Cops. Todd’s defense was kinda Shakey even when we were winning. We have up lots of big plays, but in September many offenses are still gelling. Now that everybody has their offenses tuned up…except us ..teams can pick us apart. Another thing is we have man corners playing soft-as-a-grape zones and then we miss the tackles.
I see I might be raggin’ on the defense harder than the offense., but other than the Brady years I got used to scoring 17-21 points a game. Bucball, baby!

  28. BUCS4LIFE Says:

The “we can’t work any harder” comment is the biggest one I’m having a challenge getting passed.

  29. Fred McNeil Says:

Replace Bowlzo with a wooden Indian. Maybe we’ll play like the Chiefs?

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Todd doesn’t understand how to measure what he and his staff teach. Hence regression instead of improvement.

Working smarter, not harder, is a successful concept but obviously unfamiliar to Todd.

I wonder whatever happened to BA’s “accountability sheet.”

  31. DEBucsFan Says:

How about ” We gotta hire better”. I like that one

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Pewter power – Yeah, I know it wasn’t you saying that, I mean it’s insane to hear the team saying that.

    How far they have fallen.

  33. JD Still Says:

It’s pretty simple , in the immortal words of Yoda, “ There is no try, there is only do, or not do”.

  34. Toad Bowels Says:

I will lead this team to a Super Bowl. Just give me another 26 years and on 2050 a Super Bowl banner will again fly over Raymond James Stadium!
