Rachaad White Really Is A Misplaced Slot Receiver

November 8th, 2023

Strong receiving numbers.

Earlier this season, Joe began referring to Bucs running back Rachaad White as a misplaced slot receiver. Joe was being half-sarcastic because White sure isn’t a dangerous NFL running back.

(This White runs for meh 73 yards on 20 carries Sunday and all of a sudden people act like he’s the next. Adrian Peterson. Slow down. That’s how low the bar has been set around these parts for running backs.)

In recent weeks, Joe has been much more serious.

Well, NextGen Stats pumped out really good info on White. As a receiver.

Per NextGen Stats, White has hauled in all but one of his 34 targets in the passing game this season. Pretty good. If he keeps up that rate he’ll set the single-season NFL record.

Even better? White has caught 20 straight targets. That’s a current NFL-best mark.

Yes, Joe is serious when he suggests White should be a receiver. Given White’s success catching the ball, if you are an NFL defensive coordinator, who scares you more, Deven Thompkins or White?

Currently, no NFL defensive coordinator is losing a wink of sleep over the Bucs’ league-worst run game.

Put him in motion and have him take a bunch of snaps from the slot position.
Also maybe I’m wrong, but White seems to actually have some success on draw plays.
    Just saying.

    Has Bowles been fired yet?

I’d like to be excited about this, but….

  4. Pewter Power Says:

Uh no he’s not a misplaced spot receiver it sounds ridiculous. He doesn’t line up with a db obviously expecting him to run a route

  5. SB~LV Says:

I bet he would love that move for longevity

    ^^^^^

Only two things matter the remainder of the season. You got the first one.
Second, has Evans gone over 1K?

    (He’s at 594)

How much will the Bucs lose by Sunday?

    I’m thinking 24-20 Titans.

3-6 keeps us in the division hunt.

    Bowles for President!!!!

C.J. STROUD BREAKS NFL ROOKIE RECORD WITH 470 PASSING YARDS, TIES ROOKIE RECORD WITH FIVE PASSING TOUCHDOWNS IN HOUSTON TEXANS’ WIN OVER TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS……. what an embarassment to the Bucs organization….. FIRE Bowles ! 🤬🤬🤬

  9. Bobby M. Says:

Good hands….no doubt, but he’s also often got a decent amount of space/ separation due to be covered by a LB.

  10. Mike S Says:

IIRC someone said back in March that this would be a popgun offense where they threw to the backs and TEs on short yardage passing plays would be the mainstay of this offense despite having stud HOF WRs.

Oh yeah that person was me.

But I have no idea what I’m talking about. 3-6 here we come.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    I agree Joe.

Why can’t the Bucs use White like San Fran uses Deebo Samuel?

Seems like a no-brainer to me as well…

  12. Aubpierce Says:

The Dolphins once drafted a running back out of Florida for the sole purpose of turning him into a wide receiver. Over 7500 yards later he retired. Why can’t the brain trust of the Buc’s see that in White? As far as the other two QB on the team give one of them a chance, maybe they can see over the line and hit some deep passes. General managers ego gets in the way which influences his decisions in drafting, which has not been good. No depth, edge rusher, running back, defensive backs and quality offensive line.

the bucs have so much potential but i have no hope until bowles is fired

    Great point.

    Hhhmmm? 🤔

Would probably less effective as a slot receiver, he could be a third down back if we had another real RB. But as an RB coming out of the backfield, teams will start paying attention to that, which may open up more opportunities for Godwin and the tight ends.

  16. Jack Clark Says:

Rachaad White is a good running back that has very bad run blocking. The Texans run defense is #2 in the league allowing only 3.5 yards per carry and Rachaad White got 3.6 yards per carry against them, 73 total rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns, 46 total receiving yards, and 119 total yards. That’s not below average, that’s good, especially when you compare him to how our other runnings back did against the Texas. Ke’Shawn Vaughn only ran for 2.2 YPC and got -1 receiving yards, and Chase Edmonds got -5 total rushing yards and -1 total receiving yards! Joe obviously has some hateful bias towards Rachaad White just like he did for super bowl winning offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, probably because White said something in an interview that hurt Joe’s feelings 😂

  17. The Daily Coroner Says:

    Finally.
Of course the fact that he is not a slot receiver is coaching. Right. Enough said.

  18. Pistol Pete Says:

Can’t hurt, Godwin is doing nothing this season without Brady. Heck, Collinsworth was a QB when he went to UF, but his speed and being 4th on the depth chart moved him to WR and eventually a first round draft pick. Sometimes talent evaluation is a key ingredient missing on this team…and in insistence on keeping players in games when they’re the obvious weak spot (Neal). I still can’t forget what Russell Wilson did to Dean with those red sleeves in Seattle a few years ago…same DC!

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Leave him right where he is, just adjust the usage.

10-15 years ago he would have been a wide receiver, but now clever teams are figuring out how to manipulate defenses by using recievers at RB. Deebo Samuel and Alvina Kamara come to mind. They aren’t bell cow backs that should be asked to carry the load, but they are chess pieces that can be put in positions to do damage in the open field.

Rachaad White should rarely be used to run between the tackles. They need a different player, one that currently doesn’t reside on the roster, to fill that roll. They’re slowly but surely figuring that out, but they failed in the offseason to add that other piece to the puzzle.

  20. SBucs Says:

The coaching staff are ‘fired men walking’ plus they’re so far up their a-holes they can’t see the trees.

  21. Usfbuc Says:

Have to either find guys who do what you want or cater to their strengths. Seems like we don’t do either right now.

  22. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Throw the ball to him. But get someone else to run it. A better runner in the backfield would obviously make play action a more serious consideration for the defense. Not gonna happen this year so…it may not happen for a while since the next guy will clean house.

Geez Joe, it might get scary this Sunday in Tampa. Canales and his players are connecting. Fans like me have been yakking about White and Otton helping out the receivers. Meanwhile, let’s see if Canales can let GodzillaCG14 loose in that mix. Titans won’t know what hit them. Yuk-yuk.
