“Devin White Does Not Deserve Another Contract From This Football Team”

November 11th, 2023

Done with Devin White.

Most Bucs fans were appalled with what their eyes were seeing Sunday when rookie Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud went wilding on the Bucs defense.

Todd Bowles’ defense.

So too was former Bucs guard Ian Beckles.

The popular local sports radio personality had plenty of things to say about the awful play of the Bucs on his podcast “In the Trenches.” Beckles likely saved his stronger ire for Bucs inside linebacker Devin White.

In short, Beckles said White already should be putting his Tampa Bay area residence up for sale. The Bucs should not bring White back for 2024, Beckles noted.

“To me, Devin White just talks a lot,” Beckles said. “He had a sack [Sunday] — it was his first sack of the year.

“A lot of talking. A lot of ‘I… I… I… need to get paid.’ Naw. You don’t need anything, you’ll get what you deserve. And you don’t deserve it. Devin White does not deserve another contract from this football team. No way. No way.

“Especially after you b!tched and moaned last year after a subpar year. That’s not leadership to me.”

Beckles noted several times in his podcast that the Bucs defense is a colossal mess and if not for Lavonte David and Antoine Winfield, the Bucs defense would fully be a complete jailbreak.

Of course, Beckles cannot complete a podcast without invoking the name of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, one of Beckles’ favorite scorn targets.

Defensive coaches should be “embarrassed” by putting Joe Tryon-Shoyinka on the field expecting improvement, he said. And Beckles added if the coaches are not embarrassed by JTS, Beckles certainly is.

Beckles believes there is something really wrong with the defense when a rookie like Stroud puts up 470 yards and five touchdowns.

“Four-hundred seventy yards in regulation!” Beckles shrieked. “It’s hard for me to watch.

“The Bucs gave up 208 yards in the third quarter – what? There are a lot of stones to be thrown.”

How bad are the Bucs? He believes their best position group is the defensive backs.

“Most teams can give you one thing they are good at,” Beckles began. “One thing. One. The Bucs don’t have one thing.

“The defensive backs may be the best group on the football team. That’s our best group. That can’t be your best group. A defensive backfield cannot shine without a defensive line. That’s just the fact.”

While Beckles thinks the defensive backs are the strongest unit on the team, that doesn’t mean they are playing well. He noted Carlton Davis has one pick in his last 31 games.

Beckles did add that making the playoffs is about the ceiling for this club. He said you cannot expect to do much if your quarterback is Baker Mayfield.

“Baker Mayfield is not the problem but Baker Mayfield is not the solution, either,” Beckles said. “A good Baker Mayfield game is a bad Tom Brady game. You can look up the statistics if you want.”

Other thoughts from Beckles:

* Says the defense lacks dawgs. “Defensively, they don’t appear to be that aggressive anymore.”

* On right guard Cody Mauch: “Cody Mauch, he’s a rookie. You’ve got to keep him in there.”

* The Bucs need to upgrade the tight end position in the offseason. “What good team has a Cade Otton as their No. 1 tight end? He was balling out [Sunday] but nope. It’s not enough.”

* Beckles is beginning to lose faith in Todd Bowles. Beckles said when you have a defensive head coach you expect to have a “wicked” defense. The Bucs are not. “This defense is so far from wicked. It ain’t close to wicked.”

* Where is the creativity? “I see teams scheming people open. … When is the last time you’ve seen that with the Buccaneers?”

* Beckles seems to think Bucs coaches are OK with the play of the team. “I’m seeing a lot of bad play out there but I’m not seeing a lot of changes.”

* Beckles does not see a light at the end of the 2023 season for the Bucs. “We can’t beat anybody.”

    All accurate

  2. Texasbucsfan Says:

I agree with Beckles. It all starts at the top. Coaches have to go, they are responsible & need to be held responsible.:

  3. #99 the big fella Says:

    Definitely speaking the truth!

  4. #99 the big fella Says:

Joe, why is it every article I click on I get a pop up advertisement before I can read the article? I have been here for years and never had this issue

  5. CleanHouse Says:

Yeah Joe. These pop ups suck, especially on an iPhone. They are irrelevant and difficult to click out of.

  6. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Does anybody want sensitive Devin White back? I’m guessing not.

  7. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

100 percent agree with the D.White take. Sad fact is we missed an opportunity to get compensation for someone who doesn’t want to be here. He balled out during the Super Bowl run but his regression is something I just can’t figure out. I can’t pinpoint the problem on why he hasn’t been to that level again in two years and I don’t think the coaches can give an exact answer either. The only thing I can think of his desire and lack of intelligence at the LB position. He just doesn’t process information quickly and teams can scheme to counter his speed. Losing Suh upfront has also took a hit on his play. It’s all on Vita to keep lineman off him and White can’t flow like he used to. Leading to his biggest fault and that’s to get off blocks. Can you put him on the outside to rush? Sure, but can be consistently win at the point of contact to rush the QB like Parsons? I highly doubt it.

  8. Voice of Truth Says:

Agree wholeheartedly with everything he said – it appears the Todd Bowles experience is heading straight for a cliff

It’s like we look at the talent and ignore that we are not set up to do what he wants to do – instead of adjusting like any sane coach would do he just keeps hammering the square peg….

The shiny side of the coin is it wont take long for a good coaching staff to turn around this group of talent and with some good cap management done this year we can get some more talent for the new crew

A 4-3 DC would likely be a good idea – let Vea be the 3t and put another 330 lb next to him with Gaines as depth, move Chancey to LDE a la Greg spires and YaYa is the RDE – Nelson/ Hall are depth bye JTS

If we are forced to keep DWhite, he is a 4-3 MLB- LVD plays another 2 years at WLB – Dennis/Britt are the SAM’s – AW can play either S so we can upgrade Neal with either a better SS or FS

An OC that likes to get the ball to his best players regardless of who they are also could be a novel concept – add a power RB to compliment RWhite, please find a TE1 – Otten is a TE2, he can’t block effectively enough

Draft Mikes replacement and keep working with Palmer – Godwin and Evans are still a solid combo but need more speed to open them up

OL needs a real C and not much else – if you move Hainsey to G after getting a C keep everyone except Feiler – upgrade him with a young draft pick and let’s roll

We have a very good set at K/P – we just need a real returner in the punt game, kickoffs have become a touchback waiting to happen

It won’t take long if we hire the right HC

  9. Lt. Dan Says:

Devin White absolutely does not deserve a bloated contract from the Bucs. I would be okay with signing him back at a modest contract. Hard to imagine any team offering a ton of money. Even if White plays lights out for the rest of the year that would just show he only plays when he feels like it.

  10. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Beckles needs to put down the pipe cause whatever he’s smokin is altering his judgement big time.
Evidently the way overpaid, lawn chair styled corner backs on the Bucs are simply nice guys, but bad coverage players, and Beckles is getting ‘nice guys’ confused with ‘bad coverage player’ and it’s distorting his reality on the ground completely.
Using his logic, I’m surprised he didn’t throw jake the punter for the houston fallout under the bus.
    Come on man.
And to blame devin white? Really? Let’s just put this behind us , and hopefully the next rookie QB doesn’t shred us like like last one just did for 473 yards, which is 1/4 of a mile, if the DB’s learned anything from their mistakes…🤞

  11. Beeej Says:

Is Britt deemed “too slow” to start on that position? At any rate, Dennis with the rookie contract probably be as near effective at 10% of the cost

  12. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

The only thing Beckles said that I don’t necessarily agree with is the DB’s being the strong point of the team. I said this long before they resigned Davis that he was a below average CB. The only really good DB is Winfield Jr. Neal is downright awful. Its sad when you say the DB group is the best.

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I just got a pop up add that was selling a pop up add blocker.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Beckles is mostly right and it hurts…..this is a very poorly coached team….Devin White has been totally mishandled at every turn.

  15. Lombardi Lenny Says:

The best thing that could happen to the Bucs is literally fire everyone and rebuild. This organization is cancerous and a very Very toxic environment that breeds mediocrity.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

Devin White’s current PFF grade is 45.8.

If the Bucs give him the contract he wants (@ $20M per season) then our GM is insane…

Let him test free agency. Hopefully another team will overpay for his services.

Plenty of solid ILBs will be in the draft – I think Jeremiah Trotter Jr. would look great in the Pewter and Red.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Not a big Beckles fan But he tells no lies here. This far, I have been ashamed of this defense. The one thing we’ve always hung our hat on is no more. I got the Titans romping all over us.

  18. Onetrickpony Says:

Yes this page is acting crazy too,on my end also

  19. Buddha Says:

    Tom Brady’s QB Rating 2022 90.4
    Baker Mayfield’s QB Rating 93.4
    Stats don’t lie!
    Brady TDs 25 INT 9
    Mayfield. 12. 4. Projects to 25. 9

  20. Couch Fan Says:

Baker Mayfield is not the problem but is not the solution either.

    —-

BINGO!! But dont let the Mayfield cheerleaeders here you say that. They’ll crap all over themselves and then the keyboard trying to convince you that theres no possible way we could ever do any better than lose with Mayfield! LMAO

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Devin White was used the way the Cowboys use Micah Parsons- moved around on DLine, blitzing from different positions… we would see a more productive player.
Leaving White in soft zone coverage for a majority of plays is a waste of his talent
As for the DB’s – the soft zone coverage only works if you can put pressure on QB, and it hurts the development of the young receivers because they consistently drop contested catches or fumble because they’re not getting the physical contest in practice.

  22. BucsFanSince 1996f Says:

I doubt that White would be playing as bad as he is in a contract year unless he had a significant injury.

And IF he does, that might be why he didn’t get traded before the deadline. What team would want to give up draft capital for an injured player who is unable to contribute much and is a free agent after this season?

  23. Kalind Says:

I usually bash beckles on these here pages, but he must have eaten his wheaties or laid off the sauce. He was 100% accurate here. ESP w White. Dude is all hat and no cattle.

  24. TheMightyVH Says:

Beckles is spot on with everything

  25. Buccos Says:

The Bucs should already be in discussions with Harbaugh from Michigan

  26. SB~LV Says:

    Yep !
    Average

  27. Beej Says:

    Can Harbaugh play edge?

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

It really has gone well beyond embarrassing. They must not watch what good teams do that works. Or if they do, they don’t try to emulate it. I would guess that their practices are just as bad. When their plans aren’t working they say they need to just stick with it. Bowles has an ego problem and when something is working well on defense, like his blitzes, he stops. Canales is nothing more than a reconstituted Leftwich. Todd Bowles is not a leader of men. He’s not a good coach and this team is reflection of him and his inept staff. It’s time to cut them all loose with the exception of giving Canales more time, but also giving him a stern warning to correct the flaws. It’s garbage.

  29. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Hard to argue with Beckles take. Always like reading or listening to any media person who is not afraid to tell it like it is. A lot of “Local” media has a tendency to ride the fence to much for fear of upsetting Bucs Brass it appears.
I would rather get run over by Henry Sunday than let another rookie QB throw 500 yards and 5 TDs against the Bucs. This week has been sickening watching all the Hype about rookie all world CJ. kicking the dog poop out of the
    Bucs and setting NFL records.
All optimism left me last Sunday. Tired of the bullspit schtick.
    Go Bucs anyway.

  30. Destinjohnny Says:

I’m not saying todd is parcels but man it’s hard to run the derby on a mule.
Then get mad at the jockey
The finger to me points at one person
    Jason Licht

  31. TF Says:

    Truth

  32. Pewter Power Says:

I said In the offseason he wouldn’t get franchised or signed long term and that looks like i was spot on. What I was wrong about is I thought he would be smart enough to play with his hair on fire to get that contract not play as if he’s avoiding injury

  33. NE Fan Says:

Buddha, Brady won 8 games in this sad Bowles play not to loose O with a much harder schedule. Let’s see how Faker does. And thank God for him the seats weren’t $30. Jeez us, he gave you a SB you ingrate!

  34. Since76 Says:

I agree with beckles assessment. Especially about Mayfield. Nice guy but you can’t win with him. Maybe keep him in to get the high draft pick. Unless you want to see what trask can do. This season is one loss away from being over. Would be already if not for being in the NFC south. It’s a bucs life.

  35. Doc Says:

Jason Licht, need to be the first person fired

  36. realistic-optimistic Says:

I don’t always agree with Beckles, but everything he said here is accurate.

And if White gets another contract from this team, Licht can hit the road IMO. He’s better than any previous Bucs GM, and he has some really nice hits. But there are some really bad drafts over his 10 years. I’m cool with him sticking around a little longer, but not if he re-signs White.

  37. Jordan Says:

Agree, but we also need to stop putting Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean in zone.

We should definitely pay Winfield and Wirfs over Devin White. Lower risk of injury for both, and their games are far more versatile. Devin only gets a sack when he’s untouched.

  38. Bucs Guy Says:

It all comes down to if the Bucs keep or fire Bowles. Assuming they keep him, extend the K, Baker and Evans.
    DE in 1st
    C in 2nd
    RB in 3rd
    S in 4th
    G, LB, TE in FA

  39. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    MORE JASON BLUELICHT SPECIALS

Please GLAZERS fire that CLOWN…Jason LICHT

Not gonna stop until that clown is gone.

  40. Buc king Says:

The man is spitting pure facts and deserve the nod for what he’s saying

  41. Buc king Says:

We should trade white now for a 2nd round pick

  42. SlyPirate Says:

When Beckles gets thing correctly, it’s painfully obvious. That’s how bad the Bucs are.

  43. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

This time I agree with Ian.

  44. Bosch Says:

Ian would make a great head coach. No nonsense, yet fair.

  45. Buc4evr Says:

I don’t always agree with Beckles , but this time he is spot on. White is all talk. Yeah White makes a few splash plays, but most of the time he runs around like JTS.

  46. Alstott up the gut Says:

I always defended Devin White and really wanted him to have a strong year. I can’t watch Centers push him around constantly! It’s almost like he seeks that contact. He definitely has not earned an extension and I hate to say that. Shaq also needs a counterpart and JTS leaves much to be desired. Maybe he can become another Will Gholston down the road and get paid accordingly. Please show a pulse on Sunday Bucs!!!!

  47. Oneilbuc Says:

I think Devin White is still hurt but at the same time this the weak football that ever one thinks is so good. All this modern day football crap that y’all love to talk about and how the players are bigger stronger and faster is a narrative. The fact is the players are faster because they are smaller. You can’t expect a linebacker that’s 220 to get off a block from a guy 350 ponds it’s just ain’t going to happen. All the so call good linebackers in today’s game all of them have above average or good defensive line that let them run free and don’t get block . I remember if a linebacker can’t get off blocks and make tackles he couldn’t be a linebacker. These players are to small now days that’s why football back in the 80s and 90s was better than today’s football. It was a better product of football back than. That’s why I don’t think none of these players in today’s game deserves goat status regardless of position.

  48. captivajim Says:

maybe bowles can take the mouth with him when he gets fired…..

  49. Crickett Baker Says:

Beckles doesn’t even know Devin lives in Odessa. He is super opinionated and trying to garner clicks. I hate when supposed “fans” totally bash the team.

  50. No Mercy Says:

100% agreed he’s the preseason king but when the season actually starts he turns into a ghost on the field. Honestly doesn’t do Jack sh** most of the time besides talk crap to the other team. Which is ironic considering how often he gets absolutely burned by offenses. He’s not playing anywhere close to a top 5 draft pick and it seems he has more important things on his mind than football

  51. unbelievable Says:

    Pretty spot on.

I do think Devin White is still injured. If not, then his play the last few weeks is straight embarrassing.

The only real dogs on our defense are Lavonte David and Winfield. That’s it! I love Shaq but he’s too inconsistent without a stud at the other OLB position. And JTS is the opposite of a stud. Would like to see more of Diaby. I also think Kancey has a lot of potential, but you can’t usually rely on a rookie lineman to contribute too much.

On offense- maybe Canales could pull his head out of his arse and stop wasting 80% of our 1st and 2nd down on runs to nowhere. Someone should inform him that Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are still on on this team.

  52. Bojim Says:

So the defensive backs are the strongest unit? Except for Winfield, the secondary sucks. A rookie put up 470 yds and 5 TDs. I’ll never forget that. Evah!!!!!

  53. Bojim Says:

Oh and I’m embarrassed. Been my team since 76 but this is one to be remembered and never forgot.

  54. ChrisBuc23 Says:

I couldn’t agree more on this Devin white is soft and a liability in coverage out there. Too soft. He can kick rocks after the season if it were up to
Me I would have traded him 🗑️🗑️🗑️ and get something for him at least. He’s not worth what he is looking for.

  55. PowerOfPewter Says:

Truth. From Beckle’s lips, hopefully to Glazer’s ears.

  56. 813steve Says:

Seriously? Besides Winfield the secondary is trash…470 yards and 5 TDs should be a clue. Davis is super garbage too.

  57. Bradley Brown Says:

There’s too much tread on Devin White to let him go. Patch it up with the guy and everybody get their heads right and let’s move forward.
And Ian Beckless? Who cares? My guy looks like he gave up 472 pounds to the triple-beam his last time up.
