Carlton Davis Gets Major Props From Maybe NFL’s Best WR

November 5th, 2023

Big time compliment.

When a team loses three straight and four out of its last five games, the knives start to come out.

Despite the Bucs being quite good in keeping opponents out of the end zone, folks are starting to throw darts at the team. Safety Ryan Neal has become a fan favorite, for example. But a pair of Bucs veteran corners are getting flack as well.

Well, there is one guy who thinks the Bucs have a starting corner who is the best in the game, at least the best he’s faced. In a sitdown with NBC’s Devin McCourty, Bengals star receiver Ja’Marr Chase was asked by McCourty who is the best corner he has tangled with.

“Carlton Davis,” Chase replied. The long arms of Davis got to him, Chase said. “He just plays defense,” Chase said.

The Bucs are tied with several teams in giving up the sixth-fewest points per game at 16.3. Remember what Warren Sapp used to say about “Just give me 17 points?” The Bucs defense is doing Sapp proud.

And a big part of that is Davis.

Joe asked Davis about how Buffalo went to so much no-huddle in the Bucs’ last game. Davis said the no-huddle didn’t throw the Bucs off because they have faced it before. What the no-huddle does do is sort of disrupts communication with the defense and hinder a defense from blitzing.

Joe suspects being unable to bring in players in sub-packages against a no-huddle is tricky, too.

So yeah, Joe gets it. People want to throw rocks when the Bucs go into a tailspin. Joe is frustrated along with every other fan. But several players deserve the daggers.

A dude like Davis who often locks down another team’s top receiver and who helped get the Bucs a ring not quite three years ago should not be one of those players catching hell.

    Jamar Who?

    Geez!

    Go Bucs!

Believe both corners would be more effective if they could play man, which many people think is their strength. I noticed Dean playing up on his man last
week for change. We need to get better safety play from Ryan Neal.

“Locks down” Jose, you’re a comedian.

  4. DS Says:

Too bad we are a zone team now lol

  5. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I dunno, the Bucs could have saved themselves a boat load of cash by just going with standard run of the mill lawnchairs. You see with 2 lawnchairs as corners they could be placed on the line of scrimmage and that way the WR’s might get chucked off their favorite routes a little. Unlike the standard 15 yard charmin cushion the Bucs love to deploy these days.

  6. Hodad Says:

Will Gholston has more interceptions then Davis. Let that sink in then tell me how good he is.

    Big praise

I hate the soft zone with the huge cushions, letting offenses go down the field until we play tighter coverage in the red zone where the coverage fits Davis and others better. Bowels keeps playing not to lose between the twenties, no wonder the defense gets tired by playing that soft zone and letting teams win the middle of the field.

All the DB’s would look a lot better if we had a pass rush. Sit Hall and play Gholston, sit JTS and play Nelly or YaYa. Give Gill some snaps!

Those revis island days are gone. We are in the what is a catch era so what is a lock down corner? Maybe it’ just a few good games just like the refs

From that GREAT immortal British Philosopher, Austin Powers…..

    RIGHTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!

Carlton looks like he mailed it in once he got paid. He doesn’t arm tackle any more, he doesn’t fight for the ball anymore. I know part of it is Toad playing terrified and allowing WRs a 37 yard cushion, but regardless, I haven’t been the least impressed with CD and his $16M salary.

  12. Coach G Says:

My best friend’s a 9ers fan, so I always rag on him, saying that both our starting corners would start on his team, especially Carlton Davis. So thanks for the ammo in our on going trash talk battle!

  13. Larrd Says:

    Noah Brown concurs!

  14. Rob Says:

That’s just preposterous! Davis is TERRIBLE!
Can’t cover and will NOT tackle. Complete waste of a roster spot and whatever he’s being paid.

We all no where this season is going, the Bucs are going to be 30 or 31st in the league in alot of categories. This will give us a few draft pics but the concerns are greater. The game is one item, the fan base is becoming depleted. The reality is that the Bucs can be a very good team and organization but look at the sidelines and the faces of the teammates. The game is extremely physical at every facet staying healthy is the test. The rewards of winning and being able to continue playing are a physical and psychological environment that can be maintaned, unless you continue to loose. The heartaches are devastating. The attitudes are becoming pessimistic .
