Boomer Esiason Trashes Todd Bowles; Bill Cowher Wags A Finger, Too

November 5th, 2023

Blasts Bucs’ skipper.

Today on the NFL on CBS postgame show, co-host and former Super Bowl quarterback Boomer Esiason unloaded on Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

As Joe and every Bucs fan witnessed, the Bucs got absolutely basted by a rookie quarterback today, Houston signal-caller C.J. Stroud. The Ohio State product didn’t just have a good game, he set an NFL rookie record throwing for 470 yards.

The icing on the cake was from Stroud, beginning at his own-25, marcing Houston 75 yards in 40 seconds to score the game-winning touchdown.

Forty friggin’ seconds!

That, folks, is absolutely unacceptable, especially against a head coach who is a defensive guy. And Esiason let Bowles have it. Esiason squarely placed the loss on Bowles’ shoulders.

“What in the world is Todd Bowles and his defense doing?” Esiason asked. “No blitzing? You don’t blitz a rookie? You don’t come after him? You play Cover-2? And you try to prevent winning by making it easy for the young man!”

Esiason’s voice was cracking as he shrieked his questions to the viewing audience.

Hall of Fame and Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Cowher, also a co-host on the NFL on CBS, didn’t want to kill Bowles. Instead, he wanted to praise Stroud. But Cowher did say this in response to Esiason’s comments about a lack of blitzes, “I agree at some point.”

Joe wonders if Team Glazer will be asking Bowles this question in the near future?

Look at the body language of players all game long

…..there’s no fire or passion or fury……they’re all playing in “QUIT MODE” …..WAITING for someone else to make a play

…..I think Bowles gave lost this team…..I really do.

  2. Bubby Says:

    Reset! Burn it down.

  3. Jiminfk Says:

Give Bowels a 10 year contract extension. Price should be very affordable.

  4. Trask To The Future Says:

    BUT BUT BUT…

WE HAVE CARLTON DAVIS, THE BEST CORNER IN THE NFL THAT CHASE HAS FACED!!!

Bahahahaha. Davis & Dean are AWFUL and real Bucs fans have known it for years.

  5. Leighroy Says:

No excuses. Todd must have put his faith in a rookie DT and JTS among others that they could get there alone. Spoiler alert, they didn’t.

Todd Bowles went from press man defense in New York to soft 10-yard off zone in Tampa and the chickens have come home to roost.

  6. Terry O'Neal Says:

Can anyone remember a more humiliating collapse by a TB defense?? After keeping Stroud in check in the 1st half the “defensive guru” Bowles just lost it. As much as I would like to smack Canales upside his head for a dozen 1 yard running plays you can’t blame the offense. 37 points should have been more than enough. We held the Saints to NINE for God’s sake. I’m sorry. Our season is over and Bowles and Canales should be fired tomorrow.

  7. StormyInFl Says:

I wish the Glazers would ask for his keys. Bowles is an example of what happens when you gift a guy a job he wasn’t qualified to take.

  8. Davenport Says:

Its over … Bowles is gone at end of season … on to 2024

  9. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Duh. He can’t perform under pressure. Token Head Coached never pan out.

  10. Miller5252 Says:

What else are they gonna say???? Total fold job by the D that’s played for the same coach for 5 years. In 5 years these guys don’t know what to do. Make the change and get it over with.

  11. Curse of Gruden Says:

    Has Bowles been fired yet?

  12. Zzbucs Says:

When you have #24 , it,s very simple….send the ball there…..no mystery here.
The most overrated player on the NFL….

I wanna be a fly and watch the film over the week with this players……
    Total disgrace!!
    Trade 24
I am done with this guy….he use to make a play from time to time, now…..not even one single play!!!!

  13. Jerseybuc Says:

He’s so overmatched as a HC!! Should have been bounced last year!! I know the glazers don’t fire mid year but today was really really bad only thing is no one on staff can fill in which is pathetic

  14. Bee Says:

This coaching staff is clueless. Damn shame we gotta wait til January to see how we might get better. We know Bowles is gone but will Licht get canned as well? As those expensive contracts for below average players

  15. Joe Says:

Can anyone remember a more humiliating collapse by a TB defense??

    Short memory?

  16. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yep, everybody quit on Bowels. It’s over Todd. Put the house up now. No chance you are coming back next year or the stadium will be empty. He is an embarrassment in every way as a coach, especially in game. He makes the most boneheaded decisions ever.

  17. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Glaziers’ should ask – “what would you say you do here?”

  18. Tye Says:

FIRE BOWELS for the sake of the fans and the players….
Seeing him 1 more game is brutal, much less 10 more!….UGH!

  19. Nprbuc Says:

The lowest vacuum reported is 29.92 inches at sea level. I think Bowles just took a stab at beating that record for SUCK, though I haven’t bothered to see what the sea level is in Texas. He HAD to have come damn close though. He would make a great Eureka salesman but not so much a HC. He needs to go go NOW Glazers!

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

470 yards and 5 TDs………I guess you could say we should have blitzed because we had ZERO coverage.

This was a very poorly coached game on both sides of the ball…

Canales poor playcalling is overlooked because of the 37 points…..he continually calls runs on 2nd and long creating too much pressure on 3rd downs.

    He’s done it all year.

  21. Rican Says:

    Fire Todd Bowles.

  22. Will Says:

He’s a piss poor coach that should be fired in season. Joe I know you wait 48hrs after a loss for your poll but I belive if you ask should the Glazers make their 1st ever head coach firing during the season you’d get a unanimous yes..

  23. TheBucsAnthem Says:

………”See Todd Bowles as the HC of the Jets”…….

……that’s all you need to know about how well he performs as a HC

  24. HC Grover Says:

Time to clean out the HQ offices and deodorize them.

  25. Miller5252 Says:

@Will I don’t see anyone voting no except for NFC south fans from other teams. They’d vote no just so they can keep beating this team

  26. HC Grover Says:

There was only one way to lose the game….He found it.

  27. Irish Laughter Says:

As I have said in the past, Baker Mayfield is not the problem. Obviously, it is easy to pile on Todd Bowls. His HC history is very poor and lacks signature moments. Is there a connection between how the defense was set this game and how it was positioned for the LA game that kept our Bucs from another possible Super Bowl. I still feel that the Bucs will respond and start winning again. They definitely will have a chance for post season. Hang in there Buc fans. Keeping it real in Ireland.

  28. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

The lack of fire on the sidelines, or ever, by Bowels is maddening as if “looks” like he doesn’t care. Show us some passion man! You don’t inspire me and I question if the players are.

  29. firethecannons Says:

Unlikely Bowles will survive the season. Next game is against a rookie and honestly we are apt to lose it too. Just a really badly coached team that haas no handle on the penalties and allows it to go unchecked–for example why is Mike Evans allowed to get PI every game–honestly this is out of control.

  30. SBucs Says:

Can’t imagine what the Glasers are thinking… but when it’s starts to cost them money they’ll act. Poor use of budget by Jason, Cage resigned and better players are playing elsewhere, Carlton and Dean not worth their contracts. Todd easily out coached every single game. His defense regresses at halftime or unprepared.

  31. Miller5252 Says:

Raiders are up 21. Firing your coach in the middle of the night might work

  32. HC Grover Says:

Isn’t Will Levis up next? The QB Licht passed on for Mayfield?

  33. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Irish – been there – beautiful!

What’s best for the franchise, imo, is a new exciting offensive minded HC and a top QB in the draft. Winning more games this season is counter to that plan. No trust that Bowles is the right man for the job, nor Baker.

  34. RTG_BUCS Says:

    Has Bowles been fired yet??

  35. WTF? Says:

The Glazers are idiots. They won’t do anything.
They don’t care about winning. Outside of 2 seasons what the absolute F has this organization done besides suck to high heaven?

  36. MelvinJunior Says:

ANOTHER ‘Time Management’ Debacle, to add to the growing list… WHYYYYY, do you WASTE your LAST renaming TIME-OUT, in order to SAVE JUST ‘10-SECONDS’ (from like, 39 to 49) there, when your LAST TO is farrrrrr more valuable in THAT situation, while down 3!?!?!?! Plusssss… IF He Hadn’t, Then THAT LAST PLAYYYYY, never even HAPPENS, since there were only JUST 10-seconds LEFT, when it started!? CLOCK ‘Woulda’ READ 00000000000000000. Game. Set. MATCH. Overrrrrrrr.

  37. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Will Levis has all the tools to be a great NFL QB….. but he’s also very raw and needs to be developed as a rookie, cause in College he really didn’t face alot high quality competition and there’s a Giant question mark over his head to see if he really can be a good NFL QB.

  38. BusterHolly Says:

Baker Mayfield fans? L O L he wasn’t the problem today against a terrible defense. He was OK not great. Once they play any defense that plays man and put any sort of pressure his inaccuracy and failure to make plays in a big game will come back. . Bowlws has been a disaster since safety on Cooper Kupp, the cost of Bucs a Super Bowl.

  39. JeffreyLane77 Says:

If Bowles had any self respect he whould resign. Also I’m tired of these coordinator/head coach situations. Coordinator jobs are demanding enough. Add to that the responsibilities of a head coach these guys can’t do it all.

  40. WTF? Says:

I won’t watch another full game of this loser team with nothing but excuses. Oh “don’t blame baker” f all of em. Not a single keeper on this team outside of wirfs.

I’ll check in on the score but they won’t get my attention any more this year.

F you Bucs. I hope they lose every game the rest of the year then pick the worst of the QB’s and waste another 5 years like with Winston.
The next lost decade has begun

  41. SufferingSince76 Says:

Is this team only capable of doing one thing at a time? Defense good. Offense stinks. Today, offense good and defense stinks. We almost made October for talking next year’s draft.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

“What in the world is Todd Bowles and his defense doing?” Esiason asked. “No blitzing? You don’t blitz a rookie? You don’t come after him? You play Cover-2? And you try to prevent winning by making it easy for the young man!”

    ————

What is this dope talking about? The Bucs played man defense all day, I read that in the comments. It’s 100% on Davis completely forgetting how to play corner and being awful, that was the issue, not the scheme.

  43. Drunkinybor Says:

This is one of the worst losses I’ve seen in my 40 years of watching my Buccaneers. Unacceptable. Jason 😋 lick needs to fire blows NOW.I can’t beli ve what I witnessed. We deserve better than this. Fire him now. It’s almost like he has a mandate to lose. Go away. Todd blows a sausage 🌭

  44. D Cone Says:

Someone sent Stroud a Screenshot of a Joe talking smack about First Pick QB’s from Ohio State and he took it personal. He is playing like he truly believes he should have gone first in the the draft. They all can’t be Sam Branford’s and Matt Leinart’s. Who knows maybe there is a picture of every guy that planted a flag at midfield at the Horseshoe. Hope not because Bosh’s coming in two weeks.

Teams don’t have to scout the Bucs. Just pan back thru to the series of JBF posrs and they can find every weakness there is to attack.

It’s a Bad Beat. Put up 37 points and lost.

  45. Hopalong Bucco Says:

This entire coaching staff absolutely sucks. Nobody can block or tackle (except Lavonte) and coverage in the secondary is an embarrassment.

  46. TonySoprano Says:

Bowles simply has no redeeming qualities. Terrible time management and in-game decisions. He’s obviously not a people person or motivator. He’s terribly regressed as an Xs-and-Os coordinator. His specialty was supposed to be the secondary – which has proven to be the most poorly-invested unit in the entire NFL. He also shows no signs of willingness to change, he continues to stand by outdated, ineffective coaching strategies.

I’m m 99% certain he’ll be fired by the end of the season, but is that soon enough?

  47. Leighroy Says:

Rod, your sarcasm would be cute if not erroneous. A zone defense that guards grass and lets receivers run freely in front of them is poor execution. You do not guard grass and allow 1st down and touchdowns in front of you!

  48. ModHairKen Says:

Who is available? Harbaugh? Sanders? And don’t laugh. He is a motivator.

Players gone: Dean. Davis. Neal. Hainsey. D. White. Tryon.

Players to re-sign: Winfield. Wirfs. Evans.

  49. Pewter Power Says:

If you want the top pick in the draft then stop saying fire Bowles and Canales. They will give away game after game for the top draft pick. So sad to have extra days to prepare. BA made sure his staff had extra days off. Just sad

  51. Les Says:

Glazer boys need to grow a pair of balls and fire bowles now ! Not the end of the year .play calling stinks because you hire a quarter back coach .lol.team has no emotion .just like bowles. Defence secondary is awful. Been that way for a long time .your daddy would have him fired by now ,glazers boys care more about there so car team.

  52. Tbbucs3 Says:

If the Glazers cared about anything but $ Todd Bowles would be fired tonight… unfortunately they’d would not be willing to take a $85 million hit like Mark Davis was.

  53. Les Says:

  54. BucsFan81 Says:

We got another rookie next week. Will Levis maybe he will put up 600 yards and 6 TD. I mean who knows what will happen next week.

  55. CHRISTOS Says:

I was in disbelief not only by the Defenses performance in the 2nd half but by the decision to take a timeout to avoid a 10 seconds run off after the fumble was reviewd.
At that moment i knew that this decision will haunt us and indeed it will.
Why in the world you take a timeout to keep 49 seconds on the clock when you are at the 14yd line. Why you want to leave time on the clock after you score. Why why why ?????? You still can have 39 seconds.
Bowles is horrible at clock management. Do we not have a coach with these responsibilities to offer him advice ? Why you want to leave time to the opponent. i still cant believe that.
Joe i want you to ask coach Bowles but even if i hear an answer i still will not understand that.

    ———-

Have you watched the defense all year? That’s exactly what they do every week, they let people move the ball at will and don’t tighten up until they get into the redzone, when the zones shrink naturally. I understand what you’re saying, we all saw how you’re supposed to run a zone under Dungy/Kiffin, but this isn’t that defense – this is a ‘sloppy’ and ‘loose’ zone by design. It’s literally meant to be a ‘safe’ defense who is more afraid of losing than anything else. The point is don’t get beat, don’t do anything until you KNOW where the ball is going. Shockingly the Bucs have got away with it for the most part, mainly bailed out by turnovers in the redzone, but this is not a tight zone, this is soft by design.

  57. orlbucfan Says:

Boomer can suck eggs. He got clobbered by a RTQ that was missed and carted off the field. That was when he QBed the Bucs. He lost his spleen as a result of the dirty hit, and retired soon after. He is all too familiar with the refs.

  58. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ CHRISTOS

That’s just what bad coaches do.

Obviously, Bowles didn’t trust in the offense enough to have enough time to score points……he gambled and lost.

BUT…..that still doesn’t excuse that it was HIS DEFENSE and plan with 46 seconds left on the clock and he let a Rookie QB drive the ball down the field to win the game…..that is inexcusable.

  59. The Daily Coroner Says:

This defensive performance probably got Todd Bowles a reservation with a moving company.

  60. NE Fan Says:

Comical Rod Munch knows more than a QB that played and went to a SB. Maybe you can give Mahomes some pointers. Bag D losses, how about Fallas PO game last season? That’s right up there.

  61. Mike C Says:

I fire him a put canals in charge….. efff it

  62. Rod Munch Says:

NE Fan – …just a clue, I was mocking the people here who were claiming the Bucs were running man-to-man all day, and weren’t in zone. I’m actually with Boomer on this one, even if he is a loser and couldn’t win a Super Bowl.

  63. No Mercy Says:

This Bowles character really does make some head scratching decisions. And his defense just got absolutely torched by a rookie QB…. I use to defend him but I’m completely ready for us to find a better coach, and hopefully an offensive minded one

  64. No Mercy Says:

I’m not going to lie, before the game I knew Houston would end up winning. Just like I knew Philly would dominate us, Buffalo would beat us with relative ease, and that we would somehow allow the crappy Falcons to look good against us. Bowles is a bad head coach and anyone defending him (looks at Bruce Arians) is a fraud

  65. David Says:

Bowles is a great DC but he does this a lot. He drops back in the zone when he has a lead, and this team, for whatever reason, absolutely sucks at playing the zone. They’re best when they have a combo of man & zone or man with safeties over the top. I don’t know why they have no idea how to cover a zone.
I played CB in college. It’s not that difficult. You still cover the receiver through your zone and pass them off at the appropriate time you dont just watch them run through the zone to a soft spot. It’s crazy how much they do that.

    Also 9 penalties!!
Week in and week out for the last two years penalties have been a killer. Some penalties you can live with but most you cannot and about 70% of them are on the coaching.

  66. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Orlando

    WTF are you talking about?

    Chris Simms ?

  67. Lakeland Steve Says:

Bowles deserves a lifetime contract, because all we have done is reward him for failure. His defensive game calling cost us a possible trip to the Super Bowl and a chance to win back to back titles. What do we do? We make him Head Coach. Of course he already was a Head Coach in New York and he had a losing record with those Jets. So given the fact we are playing High School defensive coverages against Stroud, and seeing the failure the whole game, why of course that’s what we throw out there in the final drive. So considering he gets rewarded for failure, we should fire Licht give Bowles total control of the team and a lifetime contract. Sounds about right.

  68. Eckwood Says:

    Come on Now !!!
Everyone Knew This Would Happen !! It’s just the do the right thing force feed
Of a failed track record , wishing a foolish different result

  69. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd strikes again! He’s in way over his head. At best, Bowles is a middling position coach. That’s it. The Glazers can spot a fraud. Bowles will be gone within 24 hours post the end of the 2023 campaign. I can’t wait!

  70. Boltsfan17 Says:

Bowles was a virtue signal hire and it’s come back to bite the Glazers hard. Good, that’s what they get for such a terrible decision.

  71. Bosch Says:

This was a duplicate of the playoff loss to the Rams. What did the Glazers do then? They promoted Bowel Movement to HC. That is the irony that bucs fans wrestle with. How can anyone possibly be a Glazers fan?

  72. Robert Says:

Todd Bowles career coaching record. 35-53. He’s going to turn it around soon. No wait , nevermind.

  73. Robert Says:

Terry O’Neal, I can remember a worse defensive letdown. 2003 Colts Bucs Game on Monday night. Up 28-7 late in the 3rd. Quarter with at the time was the best defense in the league. We ended up losing 38-35 in OT to Dungy, Manning and the Colts. Remember it like it was yesterday. The Bucs never recovered that year. The defense was done forever.

  74. Hail2dabucs Says:

    FIRE TOILET BOWL !
    FIRE TOILET BOWL !
GUT THIS HEARTLESS TEAM NOW !

  75. FIRE TODD BOWELS Says:

Thank you coach for wins we’ll never remember and losses we’ll never forget.

  76. Darin Says:

Looks like the masses are finally seeing the light. Bowles shoulda been fired long long ago. Get loud about it!

  77. Boomer Says:

Where is Bruce Arians? – think he picked Bowles, eh?
Who is the secondary coach? Linebackers or d-line coach?

Can’t anyone on that sideline stand up to Bowles and say ‘NO’ ?
Soft zone in the 3rd quarter is embarrassing….

And Joe, why is it that just because a guy is a good coordinator – he makes a good head coach….. Bucs history of coaches is littered with good coordinators that sucked at being a head coach. It’s the Peter Principle. Maybe the Glazers need to find a Ted Lasso.

  78. It's Corn Says:

Stroud had picked them apart on blitzes… it was the right call not to blitz… just the wrong cover packages and poor play.

  79. Jeffrey Becker Says:

we should all be talking about timeout usage. it was obvious stroud could score in that much time, and it was also obvious the bucs were calling ridiculously stupid timeouts. the idea is to score and leave no time. tom brady must be disgusted and validated at the same time

  80. captivajim Says:

reminds me of the 43 seconds bowles couldn’t contain Rams in ’21 playoff game …..,but then , bowles got promoted !!!!

  81. orlbucfan Says:

Jmark, yes, I am talking about Chris Simms. Go look it up. He QB’ed the Bucs years ago. He got nailed in a tackle that should have been called, but wasn’t. He was carted off the field and to the hospital. He lost his spleen and had to retire. So, if he can’t comment on Bucs vs. refs, he can suck eggs.
