Baker Mayfield Is Like A .500 Pitcher

November 27th, 2023

Joe thinks a guy typing for NFL.com sort of perfectly described Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield is an average quarterback. He’s very capable of making good plays but in the same game he is very capable of making bad plays.

He’s sort of like a .500 starting pitcher. Some games he is sharp. Other games, not sharp enough.

Nick Shook of NFL.com pretty much sums up Mayfield’s day yesterday. Without him the Bucs lose. With him the Bucs lost.

Good and bad from Baker Mayfield decides day for Bucs. The always-gutsy, relentless Mayfield once again drove Tampa Bay’s offense on Sunday, and he even overcame an early injury to throw the team back into the game. One sequence in particular — in which Mayfield scrambled for a first down on third-and-8, completed a fourth-down pass to Chris Godwin between two defenders and capped the drive with a touchdown toss to Mike Evans — defined Mayfield’s value to the Bucs in 2023. They wouldn’t have had a chance of competing without him, but his mistakes also cost them. Mayfield threw a very ugly interception (to former Browns teammate Ronnie Harrison), which the Colts turned into a touchdown, and fumbled away possession on the Bucs’ final drive in a one-score game. This is what Tampa Bay will have to accept as its reality, one that grows increasingly frustrating as the losses start to pile up.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles often says Mayfield isn’t the problem but he’s not the solution.

Currently, the Bucs have the No. 7 overall pick in the draft. Prime position to get a top-shelf quarterback in the draft, or at least in position to trade up to get one.

Joe knows how much Team Glazer covets a franchise quarterback. Are we really to believe if the Bucs continue to shat themselves each Sunday for the next six weeks — and Mayfield’s teammates don’t get “pissed off enough” to win games — Team Glazer won’t direct Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to get a first-round quarterback because of Mayfield?

Get real.

Best option might be to trade a day 2 pick for Justin fields who will be replaced by Williams..

  2. Darin Says:

Bowles will ruin the top ten pick too. He’s a patient defensive coach. Usually means he will win 6-9 games a year, especially in this division. Just enough to pick in the early teens and just enough to miss the playoffs. Yep the worst kind. Keep him around forever we’ll be stuck in neutral

  3. Hodad Says:

The game wasn’t on in the Orlando market. Why show Mayfield, Minshew, when you could put on a real game featuring Lawerence, and Stroud? That had to get the Glazers attention. Mayfield won’t sell tickets next year, a new QB like Bo Nix, with a new coach will.

  5. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Yet the Bakette3 and all his other hob knobbers will continue to screech at the top of their breasts that he is the man and the myth Bucs fans sleep on. You never hear them once criticize him even when he deserves it but will come up here calling people names and hi5n people who say things they agree with. They act like he’s in the same league as Fran Tarkento
and Doug Flutie when he’s not. He’s a not a bad qb just not his enough. He’s been given his chance now its time to see what the guy we drafted to replace TB12 can do with the same team.

  6. adam from ny Says:

can anyone wrap their head around the fact that the carolina panthers picked that quarterback, about the size of devin thompkins, to tear sh!t up in carolina…

wildest reacharoonie i’ve seen in quite some time…

and no he’s not going to develop lol…

but, he just might have his career game vs the bucs in about 6 days…

we’ve seen it happen many a time

  7. adam from ny Says:

let’s say you swapped out baker in detroit for goff…

how would he do over there with a pretty dialed up team that’s a contender,,,?

maybe baker is like the perfect security blanket quarterback to sit behind a starting quarterback on a superbowl contending team…

that might be where he’s best suited moving forward…

sit behind a starter and hop in there as a replacement if needed on a completely dialed up team…

could baker replace hurts on the eagles and maybe win the superbowl…yeah

can baker do it for the jets…probably not because their one week link is in pass protection…he’d get eaten alive like he does with us…

could he replace goff in detroit and still contend?…yeah

could he replace lamar in baltimore…probably

he really should look to be a high quality back up on an elite team moving forward, if he doesn’t remain a starter in his future years…

he’s working so hard, but with the bucs, it’s like everything is against him

Who cares? None of this matters. The season is over.

All articles should now be about the next head coach and the draft and free agency.

Bowles will win just enough to keep his job and sign Baker to a long term deal. Its a Bucs life!!!!!!!

Most of the sorry teams at the beginning of the year are progressively better (Broncos). So where is the progress here? This is why I believe Todd will be gone at the end of the year. We have taken at least two steps back.

    SPOT ON!
This season was over on Black Monday of LAST YEAR – when Bowles wasn’t fired. We b all knew this was coming and there’s no sense in talking about it further.

  15. pancake block Says:

why waste a top pick on a quarterback only to hand it off like its still the the 70’s. Its blatantly obvious coach wants to pound the rock like hes got jerome bettis or earl campbell for a running back.
The good part of this square peg in a round hole relic coach is I have my sundays back for the remainder of the season.

Joe: “Baker Mayfield Is Like A .500 Pitcher”

    Except he’s .363.

    Try again, Joe.

  17. Richard Dickson Says:

Baker won the Houston game. The defense lost it.

Baker’s got no running game and no viable #3 WR. His mistakes feel like they’re coming from him trying to do too much all by himself. He’s trying to be everything to the offense and he’s just not that level of QB.

We dont want to prolong the pain with a lost decade again.

    Let’s get a franchise QB!
We already winners of 2 Super Bowls. Let’s rebuild for the next one.
Keep Licht and dump the rest.

  19. GusO Says:

Joe: “Baker Mayfield Is Like A .500 Pitcher”

    Apples and oranges, Joe.

MLB baseball teams use an average of 4.5 pitchers per game. As soon as a pitcher is off in a game, the bullpen warms up and a new pitcher comes in. A .500 pitcher is a valuable commodity in that scenario.

NFL football teams, on the other hand, play their quarterback all game, and game after game, and even season after season. A .500 quarterback in that scenario is a loser. A .363 quarterback like Baker Mayfield is an even bigger loser and would be benched on all NFL teams except the Bucs.

  20. Onetrickpony Says:

Do you really believe TB can develop a drafted quarterback? I don’t think anything’s going to change until he is replaced with a quality head coach. Trask is a perfect example

I think it would make more sense for Team Glazier to direct Todd Bowles to play Trask so we know what he can do. Otherwise it would be dumb to draft a QB.

  22. GusO Says:

QUESTION: If Trask was on a 1-6 losing streak and had a putrid .363 record would he be “like a .500 pitcher” too?

    JOE: Hell no!

  23. GusO Says:

ATLBuc Says: “I think it would make more sense for Team Glazier to direct Todd Bowles to play Trask so we know what he can do. Otherwise it would be dumb to draft a QB.”

That is the only thing that makes sense. It is indeed what every other NFL team would do. But Joe and Ira and the Bucs cannot go there. Don’t ask me why, I’m not a psychiatrist.

  24. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    Trask time!

  25. Ward Says:

The Bears are likely to end up with the first and second picks overall. I think they would love nothing more than to draft Caleb Williams at number one, then trade pick number two to Tampa for Mike Evans (Bucs franchise tag him) and a 2025 1st rounder. Bucs draft Drake Maye.

  26. SB~LV Says:

    Does Mayfield play on defense?
The difficult and correct decision at this point is to play the 2nd round pick QB
    4 wins is a failure!

  27. SB~LV Says:

    Sell the team please!

  28. AMI_Chris Says:

@Ward — Evans would never sign with the Bears. Houston is a perfect landing spot for him: Close to home and CJ Stroud as an up-and-coming team.

  29. NJbucs23 Says:

Only took 12 games for one of the joes to see this dude just ain’t it. I got nothing personal against Baker, he just is what he is.

Please end this experiment now. !!

  30. Fansince76 Says:

Buc’s should draft a QB in the first round no question.
They should also eject several super bowl holdovers on the roster who are complacent and not going all out.

  31. JD Still Says:

GusO: You hit the nail on the head! A .363 starting Pitcher with multiple blown games ,would no longer be a starting pitcher ,he would be relegated to the bullpen , ( probably replaced by a promising rookie , to see what he could do) , where he would be used to finish up games that were already lost, so as not to waste the arms of usefull pitchers ,or sent back to the minors , traded , or outright released, but he would not be starting anymore! But then again , baseball is a sane, rational , sport and playing time is based solely on performance, you do not make agreements with starting pitchers that they get to start no matter how badly they perform!

  32. maccafan Says:

So, when the Bucs defense let the Texans march down the field in 45 seconds to win the game after Baker threw TD pass to put Bucs ahead should loss be blamed on Mayfield? Baker is not elite but what do you really expect from a guy you paid a base salary of 4 million dollars this year. He has completed almost 65% of his passes and has 17 TD passes and 7 INT. For 90% of this season, Mayfield has had no running game to help him. Ever think some of those INT’s have been due to him forcing something because the offense is totally reliant on him throwing the football. Fine if Bucs want to draft QB of the future in 2024 but Mayfield has not played badly for them.

  33. NE Fan Says:

Baker has dropped to #18, that makes him BELOW average. All you Baker Boys need to get your facts right. Dropping like a stone.

  34. GusO Says:

The hype was all hype and Baker is busting on his 4th team. Time to see what our second-round draft pick can do with the starters in a game. Nobody has seen it so nobody knows. That this is the kid’s third season with the Bucs and he still has not played with the starters in any game whatsoever speaks to the gross dysfunctionality of the franchise. From the Glazers down to the ball boy down to JBF, they should all be ashamed of themselves.

  35. Fred McNeil Says:

I had high hopes for Baker early on. Even when we were winning early on I could see that Baker is no Tom Brady. He’s a capable backup. I considered him a better bet than Carr and I believe he was a shrewd and savvy signing. If we put a better team and coaching around him he’d do better, but he’s not going to carry a team on his shoulders.

  36. Irish Laughter Says:

Not Fair! Baker, with the right head coach and the support from a strong cast will Definity lead the Bucs to the promise land. The Bucs had the talent to win three Super Bowls and blew it. The common denominator in the past three years of success and failure has been Todd Bowles. Joe wants to pin the blame on Brady. Let it go Joe. Failure of leadership has followed Bowles from New York to Tampa. Our once promising team has lost 6 out of seven. Don’t blame that on someone who isn’t even on the team. The Bucs will win the division and will make the Super Bowl (under a new head coach). Keeping it real in Ireland

  37. Havenbuc Says:

A lot worse than that. Can anybody sit here and explain to me what this guy does at a high lvl other than toughness? Baker casuals you’re not gonna like this but two sources say Mayfield is top 15 in pocket time avg (Fantasy pros & Pro football reference), If this guy can’t read a defense & deliver a strike what exactly does he do?? He’s the only QB in the league with over 40 rush attempts under a 3.4 yard average other than tush push hurts, the next closest is TLawrence at 4.7 yards a pop. Why does this guy take off and run so much?? Is it because Mike Evans & Chris Godwin can’t get open anymore(highly doubt it). or is it because he’s staring down his first read & taking off after they take it away?? Wasting a defense top 10 in pts allowed & top 12 in takeaway.

  38. Tbbucs3 Says:

Mayfield has literally been one of the lone bright spots on a bad team

A quarterback should not have to need to score 27+ to win every week in the NFL. Fix the defense first.

Mayfield was still decent yesterday (lots of costly drops including Trey Palmers embarrassing one) and hes shown all season that he’s capable of playing winning football IF the defense holds up their end of the bargain but the D is failing miserably.

You could certainly do a whole lot worse than Mayfield whos still providing top 15 production in nearly every quarterback stats….but the Traskies dont like to let facts get in the way of their narrative.

  39. SB~LV Says:

    Ronde GM
    The malaise is terminal
    Sell the team
The owners vibe is the common theme
    Football ain’t a social experiment

  40. Couch Fan Says:

I sort of feel bad for Baker. He’s not a bad QB. He’s just not good for what this offense is set up for. He never should of been gifted the starting job. He certainly isnt some great talent thats impossible for the Bucs to replace like the cheerleaders would have you believe. Unfortunately its still completely obvious that ReTodd wont put anyone else in unless Mayfield gets injured and physically cant return…

  41. WyomingJoe Says:

Apparently you guys didn’t watch the same game I did. Baker was under pressure all day and had a probable TD dropped by Palmer. And the defense got embarrassed yesterday on several plays. Funny no one mentions those three things. JOE is offering his opinion. I just offered mine. The haters will certainly offer theirs. Btw, Buffalo has 6 losses. It’s all Allen’s fault, right?

  42. BUCS4LIFE Says:

I think Ian Beckles assessment speaks volume “mayfield is not the problem nor the solution “

  43. D-Rome Says:

Ian Beckles said it best. Besides, how different is the personnel on offense this season compared to last season? The Bucs managed 8 wins with Tom Brady. Baker was never going to do better with virtually the same team.

  44. Tbbucs3 Says:

Worst defense the Bucs have had since 2018…..Greg Gaines and company cant stop the run to save their lives and Gardner Minshew has probably never seen guys run more wide open than since he was playing Pop Warner.

Havenbuc, if you think this Bucs defense is good you have 0 clue what your watching.

  45. Joshua porter Says:

So it’s like jaymiss keeping both teams in the game… sry we did that hard pass rebuild the whole thing . Let’s go we did it once we can do it again..

  46. Tbbucs3 Says:

    D-Rome

The Bucs offense in undoubtedly better this year than it was in 2022 (granted not a high bar)

But the defense in 2022 was SO MUCH better than this…..last years D was actually able to stop the run and the loss of Mike Edwards being replaced with Ryan Neal has destroyed the pass D.

Thats why. Last years defense didnt get pushed around like rag dolls like they are now.

  47. Joe Says:

let’s say you swapped out baker in detroit for goff…

The WAG factor around One Buc for training camp would skyrocket (it suffered greatly with the loss of Gronk, Scotty Miller and Sean Murphy-Bunting) but other than that, eh.

  48. DBS Says:

Buffalo scored the field goal. The defense played like the Bucs and let the Eagles march right down the field to score the TD to win. Allen’s fault.

  49. Cobraboy Says:

    I would rather use higher picks for 2 G’s & a C.

THEN, in the future, think drafted QB.

    Mayfield is NOT the problem.

  50. Couch Fan Says:

Ill repeat myself. 85 yards passing 1st half. 150 total passing yards. You can keep blaming the defense all you want, and yes they are bad. But to pretend Mayfield was good enough and point the finger at everyone else is silly and beyond stupid.

  51. Couch Fan Says:

    199 total yards*

  52. Havenbuc Says:

Tbbucs3 The numbers disagree. The defense is top 12 in points & takeaways, How about the offense? 23rd in points scored & 8/11 games under the league scoring average for them(remember points decide the game). The offense has been a lot worse by a LONG shot. When you get no pressure with 4 (Thanks JL) you’re stuck with a choice of sending the house and leaving your corners on an island or sending 4 and letting the QB play pitch & catch. That’s what we’re seeing here.

  53. NE Fan Says:

Wyoming Joe@ every QB has wr’s that drop the easy one, part of the game. He also threw a softball that the rookie TE caight that should have been picked. He finds Evan’s and Godwin in crunch time when the opponent is playing softer D to protect their lead. Baker is a good backup for any team, that’s it. Minshew would have been a better choice, he has far more pocket presence on a less talented team. This D made Pitman look like Calvin Johnson yesterday. Pathetic. Bowles is a ball boy at best.

  54. SB~LV Says:

At least we have a defensive minded head coach

  55. doolnutts Says:

I don’t think anyone is shocked by Baker’s performance but honestly speaking here.. I didn’t expect him to be Tom Brady or even very above average. What i did expect is our defense to keep us in games and win some. We have way too much invested into the defense to have it playing this badly. The worst part about the defense is that it isn’t one bad game its a combination of bad games. We see glimpses but it is very inconsistent.

Sure we can draft a QB get rid of Baker but until Bowles is either gone or figures out that defense we wont be going anywhere anytime soon.

  56. Tbbucs3 Says:

    HavenBucs

I really don’t know what to tell you if the think this defense is good. They started pretty decent (hence why the Bucs were 3-1) then have become terrible.

    39 points to the Texas
27 points allowed in 2 of the last 3 weeks.

    26th worst in yards allowed.

If you watch the actual film, you’ll see the run defense has fallen off a cliff from last year. The pass defense and pass rush is non existent. Haven’t seen a Bucs D this bad since 2019.

  57. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Baker is what his record says he is- 4 WINS and 7 LOSSES-PERIOD

  58. Chad Says:

Baker is the least of the problems on this team. You need to fix the offensive line, another running back, a tight end, defensive line is so so, the secondary of the defense minus Winfield is putrid. Sign baker to a 2 year 14 to 15 million dollar deal and try to pick up a qb in the later rounds. Cuz a first round qb isn’t automatically a lock to be a franchise qb.

  59. Bosch Says:

Doug Williams, Vinny Testaverde, Trent Dilfer, and Jameis Winston were all drafted to become franchise QBs. Bucs are 0 for 4 at making that happen. Also failed to make Steve Young (supplemental draft) a franchise QB, but the 49ers didn’t. This organization is simply incapable of recognizing and / or developing the intangible qualities it takes to be a franchise quarterback. The ONLY formula that has worked for them is to patch in a proven vet who is on the back side or their career. Brad Johnson and Tom Brady.

Keep Mayfield and Trask another year. Trade down to stock pile picks in the second and third round and fill holes. Nab your next proven vet in 2025. It takes more than one season to rebuild.

  60. Dwayne Cone Says:

Complete a pass on 4th down to keep drive going after 3 straight incompletions.

  61. realistic-optimistic Says:

He has yet to put together a “solid” game. His successes come in spurts, and are always flanked by poor play. It’s not like he’s good one game and bad the next. Every game is a mix of both. All culminating in a losing record that’s right in line with his career average.

  62. Jack Clark Says:

    “Mayfield is an average quarterback.”

Baker Mayfield is average at best. He gave us his usual 2 touchdown game but we need a quarterback who can put up 3 or 4 touchdowns a game so we can start scoring 30 points a game like we did when our super bowl winning, no risk it no biscuit offense was top 5 in scoring. We don’t have the defense to hold teams to two touchdowns for Baker Mayfield to take us to the playoffs. We should start playing Kyle Trask

  63. NE Fan Says:

Chad@ can’t complain about run blocking yesterday. Baker has trouble with his reads, it’s obvious that’s why he hesitates. He also steps.up in the pocket a DC’s dream with a shorter QB. Look how Hurts, Purdy, Wilson, Mahomes, Jackson play, they scramble laterally to avoid the sack.

  64. Havenbuc Says:

TbCasual3 They’ve been the better unit of the two undoubtedly. Giving up 27 to SF isn’t bad they average 28. They held up well. Just because the RunD isn’t the best unit by 15 yards doesn’t mean they suck, still top 10 in RushYds given up per game. We were spoiled by the Suh & Vea tandem. How about 11 points against philly, 6 against detroit, 13 against the falcons, 18 against the bills, 14 against SF. How do you expect to win games going under 20 points that many times??

  65. Tbbucs3 Says:

“They’ve been the better unit of the two undoubtedly”

LOL! This defense has absolutely not been better than the offense this year. Insane statement.

Guess your just a big fan of Ryan Neal, Greg Gaines, CD300 yards and Dee Delaney.

  72. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

But which Qb to pick? NFL windows are a lot tighter and close a lot quicker. Some QBs just never get up to snuff figuring out disguised looks. Some QBs are surrounded by less than good talent and lose their confidence for good from all the criticism. Good luck

  73. Chad Says:

@ne fan, run blocking did look better pass blocking took a step back, wirfs had his worst game as a pro, probably still injured, play calling don’t put baker on roll outs enough, baker throws better on the run than he does standing in the pocket. But even then the defense has showed you it’s one of the worse 3 when it comes to passing, and run defense looked non existent yesterday also. I’m just saying there’s other positions I would fix before the qb, hell I counted at least 10 low snaps yesterday that slowed up bakers progressions as well. People wanting a qb that can throw 4 touchdowns a game, that’s not realistic, even the best in the league don’t have 3 touchdowns a game.

  74. Chad Says:

Don’t matter which qb you draft, you need him to sit behind baker at least a year or 2. This ain’t the offensive line, I would want to put a rookie qb behind. Defense needs major work major work. Defense ruined bakers game winning drive against Houston, defense gave up 27 points to a gardner minshew lead offense. Defense kept the team in games early in the year but have absolutely disappeared in the last 3 to 4 minus the Tennessee game

  75. Ateonetree Says:

Top 10 pick , solid core of guys , weak arse division , this should be a really appealing job for a top candidate. Fire Bowles after the season ( so we secure a top pick ) let licht do the damn coaching search for Christ sake. Lovie was hand picked by the glazers , Bruce hand picked Bowles and Licht got Arians

  76. D-Rome Says:

Yet to provide any evidence to show otherwise Tbcasual

    Here’s some evidence
    – Defense gives up 39 points to the Texans and sends a rookie quarterbacks jersey to the hall of Fame for breaking the passing record
    – The follow week the defense allows a perfect passer rating to Brock Purdy and sends another quarterbacks jersey to the hall of Fame.
    – Yesterday, the run defense gets gashed and allows Johnathan Taylor and Zach Moss to combine for 146 yards and 3 TDs.

    What else you need?

  80. Bucs56 Says:

Bowles got to go. Defense has both players and a GM who spent money to keep guys. They can’t dominate minshew and the colts? Blow the Texans game! Bowles brings you nothing even with players to work with.

Also we need a young stud receiver. I would prefer fields for a 2nd day pick and draft top receiver in round 1. Palmer who continues to drop balls in key situations isn’t it.

  81. Havenbuc Says:

TbCasual All being said how does this unit still find itself top 12 in major stats (Points allowed, takeaways & Rush yds per game). I dare you to go find some stats like that for the offense.

    Draft – Jayden Daniels
    Draft – OG/C

That should be a good start to what they do this off-season.

I know they don’t want massive contracts with LVD and Evans but I can’t stand the thought of them finishing their career somewhere else.

Havenbuc, maybe you should stop using madeupstats.com for references.

  84. Let EM Bake Says:

Perhaps receivers are breaking off their routes? Baker beginning to let his frustration at this leak a bit? Hell never throw a receiver under the bus publicly,
but the film may tell the story. We may see Durham a bit more, Palmer less, if the rookie cant learn the playbook. All22 is a wonderful tool.

  85. TB2023 Says:

Nice Joe, you have released the Trask Fan Base, Texas Tech fans, Longhorn fans and any other fan that plain hates Baker. Because he got blind-sided while throwing and fumbled… ahh. Ok. So not the NEW OC not the terrible O-line, not the terrible RB making TB all but one dimensional…no you joined them. You’re tired of losing, I understand. However, you’re just not looking at facts that help those “Better QBs” become successful…like a stellar Oline Eagles? KC? Bills? C’mon dude..too late to redact now.

  86. Matt Says:

If Baker is your QB1 you almost certainly have a bad team.

He’s in the 20-30th range of QBs. Borderline QB1 but probably shouldn’t be. Guys that are more unknowns should get the reps.

    He’s a perfect QB2 on a contender.

  87. The Daily Coroner Says:

Joe. It’s the defense – not Mayfield.
Sapp said, “ Just give us 17” to the offense for a win. Baker gave us 20.

  88. lanshark Says:

Go ahead and draft your “franchise QB”. Put him behind this line, with no running game to speak of, and he’ll be dead within 7 games.

  89. Thunder Says:

    He’s a very high-end backup.
If your a Super Bowl Contender. And you have Baker backing up your starter.
    You feel really good.

  90. R. Strader Says:

    “Joe thinks…NFL.com writer…is like a .500 pitcher…”

    Please…that’s like 70s journalism!
… Baker couldn’t run on his ankle! After the game his ankle swelled up like a watermelon.

He was good in the game before he hurt it

    Quit making up dumb theories.
