Baker Mayfield: Best Quarterback In NFC South

November 19th, 2023

Smooth transition.

This is why Joe is optimistic about the Bucs finding a way to win the NFC South with seven games to play for the three teams still in contention: Tampa Bay and Atlanta at 4-6 and the division leading slimy Saints at 5-5.

Joe wouldn’t trade Mayfield for any quarterback in the division, even the injured ones.

Week after week he looks more comfortable in the offense. Is it his fault the playcaller doesn’t want to force the ball to the team’s elite receivers until desperation time arrives?

Yeah, it’s not that simple, but in some ways it is.

How Mayfield is operating without a running game is increasingly impressive. And that was the case again today. Joe was fired up about the Bucs mounting a late comeback against a beastly 49ers defense. It’s not Mayfield’s fault Deven Thompkins and Cade Otton dropped touchdown passes.

There’s also no questioning Mayfield’s toughness. Joe can’t say that about some members of the Bucs defense.

Can the Bucs go 5-2 with only one opponent with a winning record down the stretch? Joe’s not betting against Mayfield.

Cmon Joe – read the room. You really think this is the time for an article on how great Mayfield is? It may not be his fault we can’t run, but it is his fault this team can’t throw the ball more than 15 yards down the field. Worst deep ball in the league.

  5. Red86 Says:

Yes. 2 TDs is going to do it!

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Good God. Just stop. They are dead. Who cares if Mayfield is the best QB. If they make the playoffs, they will get beaten. Unless they don’t get beaten. Are you so sure they can’t beat Minnesota? Why so scared of wins?–Joe

I would of lost money if I bet on him today and I would have. I thought we would only lose by 10….but Canales has let Bowzo rub off on him with his play calling and stupid plays he concocts.

  14. Baking with Canales Says:

Bad throws and batted balls makes me loose confident on Baker.
I do like his attitude. But attitude doesn’t win games.

  17. Rob Says:

Our immensely overpaid and underperforming cornerbacks are total garbage and I’m being nice. Both should be unemployed. Otton’s drop unforgivable and cost us any chance of a comeback. Next play that shouldn’t have even happened was a ricochet pick. Tryon should be cut. White not worth half what he gets paid now. Zyon flails away and makes zero positive plays. Lifelong Buc fan looking to the draft and praying Bowles gets fired tonight. Horrible head coach with putrid defense and toothless offense. Go Bucs!

  18. stpetebucfan Says:

Thanks for the choice MUNCHER…I believe I will go with Joe and #teampositive rather than with #teamloser!

Joe you are now trolling some folks here but I love it!!! LMAO

I don’t know why but I tend to trust your opinion as well as Darryl Johnston who agrees with you more than some of the whiny negative nellies here.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

I mean, Joe is right – the NFC has some historical bad QB play now, and Baker being merely middling is better than anyone else has.

If Arians was a the head coach, I’d literally have zero doubt the Bucs win the division.

But the Bucs have Todd Bowles, and he’s a very very very bad head coach.

The Bucs are 2-6 over their last 8, they just lost by 13 points, they lost their best defensive player in David, and we don’t know what is going on with Wirfs. I don’t see anything to be optimistic about.

However, I hope you’re right. I’d rather not have to fake positivity on game day, it’s more fun to actually be having a good time.

  22. Seattle Buc Says:

Joe, I was particularly impressed with Baker putting up 7 points in the first 3 quarters. I am now more convinced than ever that he’s our franchise quarterback.

  23. HC Grover Says:

I do not think this loss is Shortys fault. Joe is right. But the coaches will be the reason we do not win the division. The stinking Saints will.

    🤦‍♂️😂

  35. Bobby M. Says:

I’m good with Mayfield, he’s been super consistent with no running game, mediocre TE play, a rookie OC and a defense that is wildly inconsistent. Give Mayfield a coach like Harbaugh and he’ll dominate our division. The issue is Bowles and Licht. There’s too much invested in that defense for it to look like trash regardless of what QB they face.

  36. BelleGladeBuc Says:

In the playoffs you need a coach who makes good decisions.

Sorry, but Todd Bowles, aka “Mr. Zero Blitz and let the games best WR in Cooper Cupp run free for a 60 yard bomb to lead to a FG to defeat the Bucs in a playoff game,” is our head coach.

  37. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist and Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Most of Baker’s passes are right on the money and he’s making good decisions with the football 95% of the time.

That’s good enough QB play to have a winning record right now if the rest of the team was playing as good as Mayfield. 💯

  38. TonySoprano Says:

Nothing Baker does looks east or smooth. Everything with him is slow, chaotic and choppy. What should be a 3-step, 1-read quick pass, he turns into a long-developing, sloppy backyard, desperation play.

  39. Tbbucs3 Says:

Rod Mush and his burner sidekick are becoming the most insufferable basement dwellers on this site

  40. Ts_Buc Says:

Bob H should be released. He is the worst center in the xfl. I don’t care how smart he is. He is not strong enough and never will be. Move mauch to center and put stinnie in at right guard.

Cody is going to be a freaking awesome center. Even though he is weak and still learning. He is better and stronger than Bob.

Bucs should straight up switch to Walsh west coast. Baker with these receivers would dominate so hard the run game will be open simply because the linebakers will be called out to help stop the yac from the receivers. I am fairly certain with the timing Baker has he would dominate six yards at a time with a 46 yard bomb sprinkled in twice a half.

So tired of Bowles as head coach and his stupid run the ball insistence.

  41. Tbbucs3 Says:

Baker continued his play at a top 15 level against as good of a defense as you’ll see even with Cade Otten and Charles Simms 2.0 at RB

  42. RichieRich Says:

    An Insane Asylum

  47. Capt.Tim Says:

    Agree 100% Joe.
Every game we have left is winnable.
And Mayfield is by far the best QB in the NFC south.

We have a real chance to win the division.
With no running game, we wont go far.but Hey- still better to win.
The intelligent fans knew this would be a rough season.
Carrying the Brady money, and Coach Bowles, were gonna cripple the team.
But we’ve done better than expected.
More importantly- we have found our QB.

I hope we keep Canales, when they fire Bowles. Ithink he could build a decent Offense. Cant blame the run game on Him. Our run game has been horrible for a decade.

We draft a DE,Guard, and Center- this could stillbe a good team

  48. Tbbucs3 Says:

The most impressive part of Bakers play today was consistently throwing ropes to the outsides all day even in tight coverage

  49. Capt.Tim Says:

    Oh, I almost forgot.

Its a pity he got the int or the rating would climb up. Can’t wrong him though. replays seems to show him getting hit a s the ball comes out.

  51. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bobby M is spot on. Licht without Brady is a bad GM. Bowles is a horrible HC and his defense is pathetic. Only Winfield, LVD and Vea are worth a damn. Everyone else is expendable, including D. White, Davis, Dean and especially JTS and Hall. Also, Kancey is very overrated. This team will be what it is until Bowles is gone. Bucs have lost 5 of the last 6 games so talking about getting embarrassed should they make the playoffs is a very low bar.

Its a rule in NFL commentary that whenever you see someone talking about “through blank quarters” instead of the whole game

Its because even they know the whole game stats don’t make their point.

  53. Bucs13 Says:

Dropped picks don’t count, but drop TDs do? Two of the possible picks were right in the defenders hands! The Greenlaw drop was especially egregious

  54. Couch Fan Says:

Its a rule in NFL commentary that whenever you see someone talking about “through blank quarters” instead of the whole game

    ———-

Down by 3 scores and being forced to pass means garbage time stats. I dont expect cheerleaders to understand that though.

  55. NE Fan Says:

How many NFC South QB’s played 10 games? Answer 1. RichieRich, numbers in garbage time are garbage stats. Joe dropped passes are no different than dropped ints. Brady was ranked #10 at the end if 2022 which means squat when the team is 8-10

  56. bucsfaninOregon Says:

There are several truths shone today:
    1. Baker Mayfield is NOT the problem.
    2. This was possible the Bucs best game. They were just over-matched.
    3. Play like this each game and we win the South.
    4. They will loose the first playoff game.

  57. BelleGladeBuc Says:

The 49ers destroyed the Bucs defense.

The 49ers offense scored 3 touchdowns, 2 FGs, passed for over 300 yards and ran for over 100 yards.

The Bucs offense was controlled by the 49ers defense.

The Bucs had 10 drives, 2 of them resulted in scores and two of them resulted in turnovers.

    That’s a complete team failure. I’m

  58. Tbbucs3 Says:

Baker is outplaying ole 45 year old Brady from last year by a longshot

    Go away

  59. Couch Fan Says:

Now the cheerleaders are saying Mayfield is better than Brady LMAO I’ve heard it all now.

  60. Hodad Says:

LoL, my post was taken down. I know P.C., but it was pretty funny.

  61. R. Strader Says:

    To Seattle Buc:

Oh please, Joebucsfan is just telling it like it is.
Why the heck won’t this inexperienced OC let Baker throw?
Why won’t Licht sign a bigger RB to compliment White.
Frankly Mayfield deserves a medal for doing thus well with no apparent brain power on the coaching/GM front.

  62. R. Strader Says:

    Seattle Buc

Slander is a sin. Go back to Seattle.

  63. David Says:

    Joe,
I agree with you Baker is the best qb in NFC South. Just imagine how bad is this division when Baker is the best qb.

    1. He has been 0-5 against 49er’s in NFL.
    2. He had four near int’s that he threw right to the defenders.
    3. He got away hitting the defender’s helmet until today and it caught up with him.
    4. He still killed two of sure drive points with interception and a fumble in the end zone and possible FG. There is at lease 10 points he left there.

  64. David Says:

Baker is the best qb in a horrible division but Joe bad day to showcase Baker though.
    BAD TIMING JOE

  65. Oneilbuc Says:

Baker Mayfield fought hard in the 4th quarter but at same time he should have had 5 picks this game!! The bucs rather lose than give Trask a chance so Baker is good for this year only he ain’t the future and next year the bucs need to move on. You ain’t winning nothing with Baker Mayfield and that’s not hate that’s just the truth. I told y’all he’s average against bad teams and he’s below average against good teams.

  66. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Mayfield’s stat line today looks remarkably similar to TB’s against the Niners last year. Maybe it’s just a team thing

  67. Matt Says:

    I mean maybe?

Panthers obviously wouldn’t trade Young for Mayfield

Most would take Carr over him

Mayfield and Heinickie are the same guy

But none of that says anything. Baker is still a bottom 10 QB1 and will always be on the chopping block because of it. It’s not good enough to win anything meaningful

  68. NE Fan Says:

Well TTbucs, if Baker throws for 4700 yds 26 tds and has less than 9 ints in rhe regular season then you will be right. I guess I could go back to Brady’s first season with the Bucs and compare stats to Bakers 1st season but that would embarrass you.

  69. Falconrap Says:

This is hilarious. I hate to break it to Joe, but the All-22 will show, just like it has every game this year, that most of our passing plays have at least 1 receiver clearly open. The problem with getting the ball to Evans and Godwin isn’t the OC, all though he can call plays, and did in crunch time, designed to go to them, but that will just lead to picks if you keep doing it. No, the problem is the guy who can’t see the wide open players and holds the ball, or throws a crappy pass to the wide open guy. Just look at the egregious pass to Evans on the deep post in front of the end zone. The pass was way high and behind Evans. If Mayfield just throws the ball to where Mike is going, i.e. in front of him, it’s an easy TD because he was open. Mayfield has been missing guys like this all year. He sucks. Oh, and Trask, the guy that had nearly 13 yard per reception in the preseason to Baker’s roughly 8, would hit that pass 95 times out of 100 because he knows how to throw with anticipation. He did it all the time with the Gators, but you hate him because of where he played, right. Mayfield isn’t the answer. And we won’t know if Trask is because Bowles didn’t want to play for the future.

  70. Tbbucs3 Says:

    NEstan

Yeah Brady was so good leading that bottom 5 offense last year….real dominant QB play.

Anyone with eyes can see that the Bucs offense with the same supporting cast is night and day better this year than last

    Couldn’t agree more

  72. David Says:

Baker plays had nothing to do with this loss as his plays in the past five previous games against 49’ers. The result is 0-6 Baker Vs. 49’ers.

Fire Toilet Bowl and a GM who drafts qb’s but do not play them.

  73. Richard Says:

Mayfield is terrible throwing beyond 10 yards down field. Gotta be the most inaccurate downfield thrower in the league.

  74. Bucs4Life Says:

I absolutely loved what I saw today! Mayfield is a freaking gangster, I’m digging this guy more and more each week. I’m saying the man can stick around for a while as far as I’m concerned.

  75. PowerOfPewter Says:

If the Bucs had a decent running game and reliable defense, Baker Mayfield would be a perfectly fine QB. Let’s not forget he DID with a playoff game on the road vs Pittsburg. Hell, the GOAT could only go 8-9 with the same Bucs teammates and coaches… expecting more than that from Mayfield in just unrealistic. There are some Bucs players (and coaches) simply not producing for the high salary their making. Mayfield isn’t one of them. If the Bucs shed some of Licht’s draft busts like JTS and Hall in the off-season, 2024 will have more promise.

  76. Todd Feury Says:

It is not the players …. Look at the coaching, look at the coaches play calling. Change the coaches and you will see better playing on the field.

  77. Fred McNeil Says:

Baker is the very definition of mediocre. It might not be entirely on him, though. Our receivers did drop at least two gimme touchdowns. He sure as heck could use better protection. The most obvious thing I noticed was that the Niners had people wide wide open, as in not covered whatsoever. Our guys were blanketed tight as a drum. Why is that? Superior coaching and play calling?

  78. David Says:

Baker might be better than the rest of NFC SOUTH incompetent qb’s but it doesn’t mean Baker is a good qb.

  79. TB bolts Says:

Brick hand defenders saved baker from throwing 4 picks this game. Dude cant get it done. Check downs aren’t going to win chips with this team. Our little screen plays to RW are already getting sniffed out. This team has nothing and baker cant throw a deep ball to save his life. TOO SHORT TOO PANICKY BUT BOY CAN HE SCRAMBLE. Almost reached their season average of 17 points what a performance

  80. Rod Munch Says:

TB bolts – Actually it would have been Baker having 5 INTs, since he threw one in addition to the 4 drops.

Personally I never count the drops on either side since they didn’t happen, but the Baker Fan Bois insist on counting dropped TDs, so if you’re going to do that, then Baker has 3 TDs today, to go along with 5 INTs and a lost fumble.

  81. Bucfan23 Says:

Joe….dropped picks represent reality, when the reason why they were dropped was because the balls were thrown into double coverage, and the defenders were fighting over it. 😂 Mayfield is about as accurate as a hurricane forecast from 600 miles out, on anything downfield more than 15 yards. Completing 1 out of 5 passes downfield, with the 3 being overthrown by 10+ yards, and 2 being pinballed by 4 defenders in quadruple coverage, is not a good NFL QB. Only in Tampa.

  82. Daniel Hammond Says:

Maybe if you’re throwing the ball behind the line of scrimmage to your running back I don’t even think he’s the best quarterback on our team

  83. BakerBucs Says:

U r post says optimistic bucsfan when the hell have u ever said anything optimistic (joker). this site basically sucks I saw so many fantastic plays yesterday all the way around from this team they were not blown away like the jags the week before we’re u don’t see the jags talk nothing but trash bout there team.thats why u people suck this team offensively r on the to good things mark my words

  84. BakerBucs Says:

BAKER MAYFIELD HAS BEEN THE BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFC SOUTH AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON..IF WE COULD JUST PULL A RESPECTABLE OUT OF OUR BEHINDS, WE MIGHT ACTUALLY BE A SERIOUS CONTENDER IN THIS DIVISION & GO FAR IN THE PLAYOFFS COME CRUNCH TIME..(ALLOWING ARIZONA TO BEAT US TO THE WAIVER WIRE FOR THE JETS RB MICHAEL CARTER WAS A BIG OVERSIGHT ( JASON LIGHT SLEEPING AT THE WHEEL ) BAKER NEEDS A MORE VERSATILE & LESS PREDICTABLE OFFENSE THAT ACTUALLY HAS A RESPECTABLE RUNNING GAME TO TAKE US TO THE PROMISED LAND..TOP BRASS NEEDS TO STOP SITTING ON THEIR HANDS & DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM “THIS” SEASON BY GIVING RASHAD WHITE MORE HELP..CHASE EDMUNDS IS #2 BACK, BUT ALSO AN INJURY PRONE PLAYER WHO CAN’T CONSISTENTLY BE COUNTED ON TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE..MORE DEEP SHOTS ON 1ST DOWN TO TREY PALMER IS NEEDED BY THIS TEAM..MORE DEEP SHOTS TO KARIM JARRETT & DEVIN TOMPKINS ARE ALSO NEEDED TO OPEN UP OUR CONSTIPATED RUN GAME ( WHICH IN THE WORDS OF JACK NICHOLSON’S “JOKER “-: THIS POSITION GROUP NEEDS AN “ENEMA” !

  87. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

I MEANT TO SAY A RESPECTABLE RUNNING GAME OUT OF OUR BEHINDS !

  88. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

AS I ORIGINALLY TRIED TO SAY..( I CAN’T GO BACK & EDIT MY POSTS WHICH IS STONE -AGE TECHNOLOGY IN MY OPINION) BAKER MAYFIELD IS THE BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFC SOUTH..( JASON LIGHT MUST HAVE HAD HIS FINGER UP HIS BEHIND ( OUR THE CARDINALS WITH A WORSE RECORD HAD THE CHANCE TO GRAB “MICHAEL CARTER” OFF WAIVERS FROM THE JETS..) BUT EITHER WAY WE LOST OUT ON A GOOD PLAYER TO HELP RESURRECT OR RUNNING GAME & EITHER THE CARDINALS OR JASON LIGHT BLEW IT !..WE NEED MORE DEEP SHOTS ON 1ST DOWN TO OUR SPEED DEMONS TREY PALMER, RAKIM JARRETT & DEVIN THOMPKINS TO PUT THE OPPOSING DEFENSE ON THEIR HEALS TO OPEN UP A RUNNING GAME THAT TEAMS RESPECT ( AS OPPOSED TO LAUGHING AT..WE COULD HAVE HAD A FORMIDABLE BACK TO HELP RASHAD WHITE BUT FUMBLED THE OPPORTUNITY SOMEHOW..GET IT TOGETHER.! THIS ONE DEMENTIONAL OFFENSE WILL BECOME OUR TEAMS KRYPTONITE BEFORE THE SEASONS OVER,IF NOT FIXED VERY SOON…WAKE UP “TOP BRASS”..DON’T JUST DO SOMETHING, SIT THERE, SEEMS TO BE YOUR APPROACH TO WINNING ANOTHER SUPER BOWL !

  89. Ed McSherry Says:

The coaching/play-calling get’s even more ridiculous with each game: each game they (Bowles & Canales- which is the same thing, as Canales is just parroting Bowles’ idiocy).

It didn’t seem possible that they could find new ways to blow a game, but they did it.

    The obvious:
just when everyone thought that they must be finally “getting it,” as their total mismanagement of talent was obvious, they obviously still don’t get it.

In fact, they found new ways of demonstrating they don’t get it.

Finally, The Point: just when everyone thought that they’d definitely, this game, concentrate on getting the ball to Mike, Chris and Rachaad, they did the exact opposite (and, no, this hasn’t been stated enough already; it can’t be stated enough).

One target to Mike, zero to Chris (in the ENTIRE 1st half!) and quickly after Rachaad did some play-making, they switched to Edmonds, huh?

Remember the early 49ers drive that went something like: McCaffrey run, run, pass, run, in the Red zone and a nice easy pass to MCCaffrey, all alone, for a touchdown.

It was all McCaffrey: they gave the ball to their best talent.

Anyone in the stadium (obviously) knows more about football (actually just common sense; with beer or without beer) than Bowles & Canales.

Do the Glazers even watch the games? The media? Where are the stories about the gross negligence in coaching?

    End highly justified rant.

Really frustrating to witness his stuff.

  90. LuvsBucs Says:

I Love Baker and I feel he is a great fit in Tampa. He plays smart. Look, he doesn’t throw the ball away when he gets rushed. He protects the rock and takes the sack.

  91. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

BOWLES NEEDS TO OVERSEE THE DEFENSE & ALLOW DAVE CANALES TO CALL WHATEVER PLAYS HE DEEMS FIT ( NO OVERRIDING THIS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR ! )..HE’S BETTER THAN SPONGEBOB LEFTWICH & NEEDS TO BE GIVEN FULL RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS OFFENSE !..DON’T FORGET WHY YOU HIRED HIM TODD BOWLES ! YOUR TOO BUSY LOOKING AT THE BIG PICTURE, WHEN OFFENSE HAS NEVER BEEN YOUR FORTE’..DON’T BE AFRAID TO DELEGATE AUTHORITY..JUST DO IT,TRUST YOUR COACHES & GO WITH THE FLOW..CHEWING OUT WHOEVER’S ASS NEES IT ALONG THE WAY ! ( MAKE EVERYONE ACCOUNTABLE) FOR THEIR MISTAKES..BE QUICK TO PRAISE THEM FOR PLAYING WELL !

  92. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

FOR A SHUFFLED LINEUP & CHANGES AT MANY DIFFERENT POSITIONS..THIS TEAM CAN STILL WIN GAMES WITH WHO WE HAVE ON THE ROSTER..TO WIN OUR DIVISION (WHICH IS VERY MUCH WITHIN OUR REACH)..WE MUST TRUST IN OUR COACHES,PLAYERS & THE SYSTEMS WHICH THEY WORK, DAY IN & DAY OUT..NO UNDERMINING AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR’S AUTHORITY DURING THE GAMES !..OFFENSE SHOULD BE IN HURRY UP & ATTACK MODE 80% OF THE GAME..FROM THE OPENING KICKOFF TILL THE FINAL GUN, NEVER TAKING THEIR FOOT OF THE PEDAL TILL THE OUTCOME HAS BEEN DECIDED EARLIER & TRASK GETS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY DURING GARBAGE TIME FOR A CHANGE..WELL ?
