“We Have To Get Pissed Off As An Offense”

October 15th, 2023

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

Baker Mayfield was a very unhappy camper today’s blowout loss to the Lions.

Not so much at his teammates, but at himself.

“We sucked today — I sucked today,” Mayfield said. “It was awful.”

Mayfield was especially “frustrated” because he thought the Bucs’ special teams and defense played well enough to win. It was the offense that screwed the pooch. And Mayfield knew it.

“We didn’t start fast,” Mayfield said. “We didn’t pick it up in the middle. And we didn’t finish strong.

“We play like that we are going to lose every time. As an offense, we need to pick our sh!t up.”

“It starts with me,” Mayfield said.

He added what ground his gears plays for the taking that weren’t made on offense. The Bucs offense didn’t take advantage because it didn’t execute.

Mayfield’s tipped pass intended for a wide@ss open Mike Evans that likely would have been a 90-yard touchdown was Exhibit-A.

“We had everything we wanted, we just didn’t execute,” Mayfield said. “It’s frustrating as hell. To come out here and not execute is inexcusable.”

When asked what it would take for the offense to snap out of it, specifically the run game, so the Bucs could rack up points and win games, Mayfield thought it was simple.

“At a certain point, we have to get pissed off as an offense.”

Nice guys finish last?

Yeah…it may start with you, but it takes other players to finish…

  2. Mike Johnson Says:

Detroit was ready. Lets make sure we are ready next week for them Falcons. We got a strong shot at going 4-2. Lets not mess this up. Ruck up Bucs. On to the next one.

Mayfield lead NFL in batted balls due to being the midget.

  4. rrsrq Says:

That hits the nail on the head, offense couldn’t finish, defense couldn’t close

  5. David Says:

This lost was on all Baker poor performance against another good team in his career.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

I didn’t hear this press conference, and certainly would never subject myself to such a thing, I instead asked the AI to write out additional quotes from Baker. Anyone who sat through this, let me know which ones the AI got right…

“Football is a team sport, and we win as a team, and we lose as a team. But today, I didn’t do my part.”

“It’s on us to get in the film room, look at the mistakes, and make sure they don’t happen again.”

“We have the talent, the coaching, and the drive. We just need to put all the pieces together. It’s a week-by-week league, and we have to bounce back next game.”

“You know, every week is a new opportunity. We just need to get back to basics, trust our training, and execute when it counts.”

“There’s no magic solution. It’s about hard work, commitment, and making sure we capitalize on our opportunities when they come.”

  7. Trask To The Future Says:

    IT’S TIME FOR KYLE TRASK.

Mayfield isn’t getting it done and now he’s a bit banged up.

It’s time to see what Trask can do. We HAVE TO find out what we have in Kyle Trask to plan for our future.

i thought today was that day…but maybe we pull a road shocker in buffalo or san fran…

one signature win against a top tier team goes a long way…

heck the jets just took down philly…

    cleveland snuck past san fran

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

Mayfield wasn’t good but my god I’m already seeing the “put in Trask” chants from R tards.

It’s called growing pains with a 1st time OC, Trey Palmer probably not as fast as Mayfield thought but Canales didn’t help Mayfield out either….has no idea how to use Evans or Godwin and is constantly putting the Bucs in 3rd and ling by forcing a run game that has doesn’t even exist at this point.

While the Miami Dolphins can find a guy like Achane in the 3rd round, Jason Licht has been given a DECADE to find a running back and has swung and miss so many times.

  10. DBS Says:

I give him all the credit in the world. Fans wanted accountability. The first place he points the finger is at himself. Yes he is part of the problem and needs to correct his part. But the staff needs to get off their ass and fix this nunning game. Don’t care if a trade needs to be made if that is possible.

    —————

It would be nice, but I don’t foresee that possibly happening.

While the Bucs have their all-time best winning percentage vs the Bills, all those victories are at home. They’ve lost every time they’ve played in Buffalo – although, remarkably, they’ve only ever played in Buffalo twice. But that game is on a Thursday night, on the road, I don’t see how win that unless Buffalo is in the middle of a collapse.

For the 49ers game. LOL! Not a chance.

I also thought the Bucs had zero chance in this game, they just never beat the Lions at home. I mean, yes, they do, but since moving to RayJay, the Lions are now 8-4 vs Tampa.

The game I’d be most concerned about is Houston. Be it the Texans or Oilers, Tampa has never won a game in Houston.

That means the season basically comes down to the Atlanta game. Win that, and they can still be 4-4 in a few weeks, and still in it.

Lose that Atlanta game, and suddenly they’re 3-5, and benching Mayfield, and we’re talking about the draft.

  12. Woodenman Says:

Whoa wait a minute Trask groupie we are 3-2 and lead our Division lets not throw in the towel yet and definitely not a QB change yet

  13. mark2001 Says:

You can call it have to get P’d. Or you can call it execute. It means that people need to do their job, make the throws, run the routes, block the schemes, and catch the D ball.

  14. David Says:

Older version of Baker has showed up. He is hopeless. Please let’s not waste any more times on him. We can win the south with any qb anyway. Let’s give Trask a chance to shine. Otherwise draft a qb next year.

  15. Ed Says:

Bucs were not sharp and were very outcoached. Jared Goff had so many wide open looks and was barely touched. The deep TD pass was not a good throw but the coverage was blown. The other Detroit TD was a flip pass and the defense allowed the a one yard catch into a 30 yard run. Carlton Davis was blasted on that play.

Just like vs the Eagles the Lions kept getting third down conversions and ran the clock from 10 minutes down to 4 minutes.

Bucs just can’t adjust to what the other team did. They were outclassed and Detroit ran so many plays. Can we just get some new running backs. These rushing stats are bottom of the league numbers.

  16. Bucsfan951 Says:

Anyone else shaking their head at the missed opportunity of Evans running wide open on the hash mark?

Anyone else haunted by Vjax being run down when he was on the same side of the field, going the same direction?

    Yikes!

  17. adam from ny Says:

one of the things that sucks the most is even at the end when most teams that lose, score a late touchdown to make it at least seem more respectable…

they couldn’t get that late touchdown to make the final score 20-13…oh well…

momma said there’d be games like this…

let’s beat atlanta next week, get to 4-2 and we’re doing pretty darn good

Teams stack the box against us. Nobody is afraid of Baker throwing on them. That’s why there were so many open players downfield. Baker just didn’t make the throws.

  19. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Certain consistent truths about this team. 1. Evans always sets the negative tone by a crucial early drop. Bucs need to figure out how to make Godwin the focus of the offense. 2. Rashad White is hot garbage every single game. 3. DBs Davis and Dean are way overpaid and not very effective. 4. This team doesn’t have any alpha dogs like Suh and Pierre Paul. 5. Licht has not drafted any maulers like the eagles or lions and consequently, this team gets its ass kicked by more physical teams. 6. Bowles’teams lack discipline, intensity and fire.

  20. Mike Says:

The offense was set up to play small ball baker can’t hit the deep ball, he just has a problem with gauging his receivers over 20 yards down field. The coaches know that and that is why they play small ball

  21. Popcorn Mike Says:

Rod munch / Adam from ny I am 100% with you. I thought if the Bucs we’re gonna break through and beat one of the better teams, it would’ve been today’s game against the Lions. The way the team played today, I don’t see them beating none of the top teams either. They got to fix this offense.

  22. adam from ny Says:

    ^^^

ok rod, that was a very depressing post…you’re literally chronicling a collapse…lol…

let’s remain somewhat optimistic here…or at least try…

as i went thru the schedule before the season i said:

if we can only go 2-2 thru the bye…
then if we can only go 5-5 thru the first 10…

we are still a little ahead of pace…the schedule imho seems to soften up a bit after the first 10…

if we somehow come out of the first 10….6-4, we are ahead of schedule…

then maybe we squeak out double digit wins…

yeah detroit is simply a better team…they are debatably one of the “great” teams in the nfl right now

  23. David Says:

Lions made Baker to look like gold jacket Hall of Famers. Bucs conservative offensive plays do not work against strong teams to protect Baker. The defenses play against the run not the pass sue to Baker’s failures to play long balls.

  24. TDavis Says:

    What does that even mean?

  25. David Says:

Bucs should have won game today If Baker just hit wide open Palmer for three TD’s and a batted ball to wide open Mike E.

  26. Popcorn Mike Says:

Must FIX this OFFENSE. This was the 5th week. OFFENSE still sputtering

  27. David Says:

    The offense with Baker;
    11 points against Eagles
    6 points against Lions
Any questions who the Baker is ?

  28. LANshark Says:

Hard to throw down the field from the pocket when the entire middle is getting pushed back into your face. Baker had no room to even complete his throwing motion – hit helmets on at least 3 passing attempts that I saw. I’m disappointed that Dave Canales didn’t see that, and start rolling him out of the pocket more.

  29. David Says:

Do not be concerned Baker’s fans. The Pro Bowler Baker will show up against Falcons. LOL

  30. Rod Munch Says:

adam from ny – Well I’m only pointing out how important the Atlanta game is. If they can win that, when I look at the schedule, I see them still be able to possibly get to 10-7, which would be more than good enough to win the NFC South. To be sure, I’m not predicting that to happen, but I think it’s still very possible.

Personally I’m not too worried about this Lions game other than I wish they looked better. But I never thought they had a chance in this game as I lean big on history, and historically this is just a game the Bucs lose, regardless of if the Lions are any good or not.

  31. Bucs13 Says:

Has anyone been paying attention to Chris Godwin’s comments this offense and season. He’s been taking subtle shots at Brady’s last season with the team. They’re starting to be less subtle after his comments after the game. I know Godwin and Brady got along well, but it’s obvious Godwin didn’t like the locker room atmosphere.

  32. Noles Says:

My favorite was punting w just over 10min left & on 3&2 don’t dial up bomb if you aren’t willing to go for it on 4th. We were outplayed and out coached. LIONS are good team. Let’s see if we take care of biz w Falcons

  33. David Says:

Lions defense as the good defenses usually have done against Baker in the past did not let him get out of the pocket and forced him to throw within the pocket. We all know what usually happens to Baker. Batted balls or getting hit on regular bases due to his short height. That is why he sustained injuries to his hand and shoulder getting hit by taller D line helmets and missing wide open receivers. He can’t see them well.

  34. Mike C Says:

Haha keep calling a one score game at the half a blow out Joe, you just look like more and more of a gigantic Richard.

  35. Irish Laughter Says:

If Baker gets on a roll, the Bucs will go all the way. There are to many outstanding players on this team not to have a great season. Todd Bowls is not my favorite. I still think the Bucs should have won two Super Bowls in the past three years if not for some questionable coaching. With that being said, the Bucs will be 12-5 by seasons end. Count on it.

  36. David Says:

    Here is the Bucs issue with this offense as their qb;
    Gets blown away by good teams and not blowing away the bad teams. After 6 weeks;
The four teams Bus defeated combine record:9W-15L
The two teams Bucs lost to combine records:10W-2L

We can win NFC South with any qb to make the playoffs but we can not bid any good teams in playoff.
Therefor let’s stop spinning the wheels and discover what we have in Trask. Draft a qbnext year if he isn’t the future. We all know Bake is the past and ready to go into darkness as usual.

  37. Popcorn Mike Says:

May be true Irish laughter but, if the Bucs don’t clean up the mistakes like dropped balls and penalties on third downs that kills drive we gonna end up going 6 and 11

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Believe it or not, I was really hoping Mayfield would prove me wrong and give me a reason to support him.

Batted passes. A pick. Panicking and scrambling. Not a good look, Baker.

It might surprise some of you, but I felt bad for him to some degree. That offensive line only gave him time about 25% or the plays.

Also, yes, I want to see Trask…but not behind that offensive line. It needs another couple games to gel.

Then again, sometimes olines play stronger pass protection to protect new QBs.

If Trask gets a shot now, it will be due to injury.

But I don’t expect much from Trask starting out, and neither should anyone else.

  39. David Says:

Missing wide open Palmer and Evans multiple times have nothing to do with OL.

  40. Buddha Says:

It is a long season. Some teams get better; some worse. Remains to be seen. Things change every week.
We were 0-2 against New Orleans the season we took them down in the playoffs. This defense is good enough to compete with the best but not when the offense can’t sustain drives.

  41. Buddha Says:

Stop it. Stop making every game a must win.

  42. dmatt Says:

Com on folks, let’s not act surprised that Mayfield had several passes batted down. It happened several times in preseason games, as well as the first game of the year. It appears to me our coaches have not tried to rectify this problem. Tells me Lions coaches reviewed films, studied Mayfield n coached their players to bat his passes down. It’s called game planned. We were out coached n out played. Mayfield has been overthrowing open receivers all season, this is unacceptable.

  43. Crickett Baker Says:

I really hope the team continues to believe in Canales. This offensive game plan was not working out at all. He sure needs to get better.

  44. 1sparkybuc Says:

Four inch lifts would put Baker on equal footing. We can win the division, but we’re not getting past the first round of the playoffs with Baker at QB. When it becomes obvious that he can’t carry the offense against teams in contention, we need to see what Trask can do in actual games that count. IMO, Trask performed better in the preseason. Baker was the one throwing interceptions. And yet he was declared the winner, a bit prematurely I believe. I’m not saying to bench Baker in the next week or two, but don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to make that decision. Just once I would like to see a QB we drafted get offered a second contract, and I’m running out of time. I’ve seen them all arrive and depart.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai – I said before the season he’d get benched after the Buffalo game, but he’s mostly played way better than expected. That ended today, he was awful. But he’s earned an opportunity to keep his job, unless he plays like he did today for the next two games. If that happens, then my prediction will, unfortunately, be right on track. I really don’t want to see that happen. If we’re not tanking for #1, and we’re not, then we might as well hope the Bucs win as much as they can.

But there’s nothing wrong with pointing out how God awful Mayfield was today, so long as you point out he’s been playing well before today. That should buy him some time unless he completely stinks up the place the next two weeks, by which time the Bucs would be 3-4 and coming off a Thursday game with extra time to get Trask ready.

However I seriously doubt Trask would be any better. The offensive playcalling, which I’ve mostly defended, was hideous today – and the fact they had 2 weeks to prepare for this. That’s very concerning.

  46. Steelers fan Says:

Asfar as tipped passes thats a normal thing for a QB of Bakers Stature. That you cant fix.

  47. Manny Says:

Yup, add pithed off to moxie and goosebumps and we got a winner!

  48. orlbucfan Says:

Steelers fan, you’re bored cos Pitts has a Bye? You’re on the wrong blog. Man, do we have a bunch of loudmouth fake ‘fans’ on here. Worse than a bunch of rotten maggots tho the clicks help Joe.

  49. StormyInFl Says:

We’ve seen what Trask can do. He sucks. His his immobile, slow learning ass will eat sacks like nobody’s business.

If Baker isn’t the QB, then this team has no hope at all.

Want to tank the season? Start Trask.

  50. Manny Says:

    Empty words.

  51. Manny Says:

StormyInFl ~ “We’ve seen what Trask can do. He sucks.”

First, Trask beat out Mayfield in training camp. Even Baker Fan Boi Joe said so.

Second, Trask played better than Mayfield in preseason, throwing much deeper balls than the midget and throwing for both more yards-per-attempt and more yards-per-completion than the midget.

Third, Trask hasn’t played in a single game with the starters yet so, well, you haven’t seen diddly.

You’re just another FSU fan boi. And boi, there’s lots of them around here!

  52. StormyInFl Says:

We don’t need to see slow learning ‘corky’ Trask…

  53. StormyInFl Says:

One bad game, and you Trask clowns come out from whatever rock you hide under. Didn’t have a thing to say after the Taints game, but now you’re ready to ‘Tank with Corky’ after one game where the entire offense played like crap.

  54. David Says:

One bad game ? Who was the terrible qb against Eagles ? Trask or Baker ? The answer is Baker scoring 11 points mostly in garbage time with an Int. against Eagles.
Baker catching up to his normal stats of throwing a pick in three consecutive games which leading NFL in int. in the past three years.

  55. orlbucfan Says:

What kind of hot air are we gonna be reading when the Bucs beat Hotlanta on here? I know I’ll be laffin’ my old wrinkled bode off.
