Unacceptable Effort

October 29th, 2023

Muscle up, please.

Some plays Joe witnessed Thursday night nearly forced a run to the toilet to yack Joe’s guts out.

Effort. Just a lack of effort. It doesn’t take anything to give effort. Hustle. Good things happen when you hustle. Nothing happens if you loaf. “The ball finds energy,” as Dave Canales likes to say.

Joe’s not suggesting the entire Bucs team laid down on Thursday night, but Joe saw enough plays streaming on Amazon to question the heart of some players.

Take Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s 13-yard run for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Allen goes back to pass, waits, sees nobody open and then takes off for the end zone up the middle.

Dude scores from 13 yards out running up the middle and nobody touched him? No one? How?

Then, also in the first half, Allen went back to pass and — here’s a shock — had enough time to order Hooters wings and drink a beer. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka futily fought with Buffalo left tackle Dion Dawkins.

It looked like JTS was dancing with Dawkins. He kept juking in place left and right trying to shake Dawkins, who just stood there and probably thought to himself, “Man, is this all you’ve got?”

Then, which absolutely blew Joe’s mind, it appeared JTS dove for Dawkins’ feet.

WHAT???!! Why in the world are you diving for a tackle’s feet? Whatever chance you had to get past Dawkins and get to Allen was to go around or through Dawkins. Diving for his feet only ensured taking yourself out of the play.

If Joe didn’t know any better, it sure looked like JTS quit on the play by diving at Dawkins’ feet. That is a damning accusation against an NFL player and Joe can’t say JTS quit. But surely there wasn’t sufficient effort.

This Bucs team isn’t good enough for dudes to half-arse it. They need to give full effort play in and play out.

If the Bucs hope to bounce back and make the playoffs, they cannot allow quarterbacks to waltz up the middle and score untouched from 13 yards out. And their pass rushers can’t dance with tackles and then decide to wash their feet.

  1. rickym Says:

Some of the Bucs players have shown a passive, disinterested effort recently. This would include JTS, Devin White, Mike Evans and Jamal Dean. Not sure if these are contract related or if it just the realization that “this team is going nowhere so why bother.” Whatever it is it is unacceptable.

  2. Jack Clark Says:

JTS is softer than a new born kitten

  3. ChiBuc Says:

Injury or not, that play shows how ineffective White is atm. He and Dean both deserve the Wonder bread award for, I wonder wtf are they doing…full loaf! Devin trots and Dean actually pulls up and looks like he is boxing out any potential tacklers.

  4. K_bassuka Says:

So Joe must have been in the bathroom all night due to all the bad plays by Maybefield. It’s better to have a player loaf on 1 play than have the QB only give you 2-3 good plays per game. Just saying!

  5. Jgar Says:

Playoffs? Iā€™ve seen enough. Time to stockpile picks and start rebuild. Only untouchables are Godwin, Winfield, and obviously Wirfs

  6. TampaBayBucsFanSince1976 Says:

Dline are ALL Lichts’ guys-their success or lack thereof-Thank Jason Licht , because he picked em.

  7. HC Grover Says:

This is simple. Plan 9 ran out of fuel for his retro rocket and bounced off the atmosphere back to Outer Space. He did get a few recon pics for Coach Bowles to look at for his “Excuse of the Week’.

  8. realistic-optimistic Says:

White is a habitual loafer. And he had the gaul to complain about his contract… I’ll lose a lot of respect for Licht if he hands this guy a bag of cash.

  9. Buc4evr Says:

Finally, Joe realizes JTS is a total waste. When will Jason realize that itā€™s time to demote JTS? The cupcake took the entire season off in college and didnā€™t have much college experience. Same for Mauch, he is weak and slow. I get it that Marpet is the exception , but why Jason keeps drafting division 3 players so high is beyond me.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

It’s getting more difficult to defend JTS.

After re-watching the Bills game I saw a few of these plays that Joe is mentioning.

I still think JTS is a decent pass rusher but I would like to see Diaby replace him as the starter and get @ 65% of the snaps and JTS be used as more of a pass rush specialist and rotational player.

  11. Pelsbuc61 Says:

JTS is officially a total bust. I also saw a play where he rushed himself away from the QB then stopped to look up in the air as if he though Allen had thrown a pass. Lifeless, passive, loafing fraud of a football player. Hopefully, he as well as D White, Evans, Dean, Bowles, Canales will be gone next year.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    JTS still sucks.

  13. Texasbucsfan Says:

Is this the type of talent on the Bucs team, that a lot of people keep referring to when they say there is a lot of TALENT on the Bucs Team. I am not sure what the word TALENT means. This phrase belongs right along the word hope. Two worthless words when it comes to sports. The only things that matter in professional sports is wins or losses. That is why a lot of the first round drafts picks are busts. I. E, – Baker Mayfield.

  14. SBucs Says:

Clean house, first Jason then Todd and his crew. Keep Tom Moore for fun, the punter, Wirfs, Godwin, pay Winfield, there are several future back ups on this roster but Jason knows football talent like my grandmotherā€¦no more no less.

  15. Bubby Says:

    Another bad draft pick.

  16. Buc4evr Says:

TexasBucsfan, I think people confuse talent with likability. This team has a lot of likeable players, but very few with week in and week out durability and talent. For example neither White or Shaq gave done much this year. Maybe 70% of the players should be on the team. The other 30%just donā€™t have NFL level talent and it shows.

  17. Architek Says:

My thing is, after all this time and snaps from day 1, we have seen this from JTS.

How and why would we expect anything different at this stage???

  18. Old Sombrero Says:

This broken play is all on White IMO. He turns his back to Alan and follows David to the flat to cover two receivers? Thereā€™s a corner and safety help. David will release and pick up the receiver coming out of backfield if heā€™s thrown the ball and the corner and safety deal with the two receivers. Meanwhile Dippy Do White is out of position. He pivots and runs back to where he should be but itā€™s too late. Neal was in position to make a play on Alan but Dippy Doo is running laterally towards Alan so Neal changes his direct angle only to have Alan continue laterally and trot into the end zone. Dippy Doo has not developed into an NFL LB. He plays like heā€™s still in college where he was a man amongst boys. We donā€™t have the guts to ship him out but Iā€™d trade him for whatever I could get. Someone out there is dumb enough to think heā€™s good just like we were dumb enough to think Alvin Harper was good.

  19. power sweep Says:

JTS should be peaking in his third season. Just sayin’.

  20. Rican Says:

    Heā€™s a bust.

  21. power sweep Says:

Damn, in that video Josh Allen looks like a monster running by our defenders. I read he’s 6-5. Must be nice having a quarterback that big.

  22. DJB Says:

The most egregious JTS non-effort to me was giving Allen a pat on the back as he ran by him. Really looked like he was scared to take him on. Dancing with blockers in the flats is his specialty. He really never gets down and dirty.

  23. Costa Rica John Says:

Maybe we can package him and a draft pick for Chase Young.

  24. Tony Says:

I’ve constantly said it how they need to trade for picks & stop trading away their picks. Depth is important. Some of the players starting should probably be backups. I’d consider giving Watts & Yaya more playing time over Tryon & they need to let Neal go after this year & put somebody else back there with Antoine. Sure Baker is gonna get blamed for a bunch of what’s going on recently & sure he’s not Brady but the OL hasn’t helped him much either. Of course he’s gotta run around for his life & get rid of the ball ASAP when they’re not helping him.

  25. StormyInFl Says:

JTS is absolutely useless. Don’t know what Bowles sees in that clown.

Devin White is a close second. 100 million dollar contract? Really? He’s overpaid NOW. Serial loafer and is consistently outplayed by 33 year old Lavonte David.

  26. TonySoprano Says:

JTS is pathetic. All he has is straight line speed. No power, no instincts, no grit. Absolute waste of a first round pick.

And then we have the trio of White, Dean and Carlton Davis – all 3 have completely mailed it in. Our CBs got their money and are now putting in minimal effort. Carlton refuses to tackle is isnā€™t even hiding it. And if Devin is this willing to loaf in a contract year, how much worse will he be once he gets the bag?

  27. Joe Says:

So Joe must have been in the bathroom all night due to all the bad plays by Maybefield. Itā€™s better to have a player loaf on 1 play than have the QB only give you 2-3 good plays per game. Just saying!

Not sure what you expect. They canā€™t draft a QB until April and they canā€™t afford to trade for one (Cousins?). So better buckle up because Mayfield is your QB until the season is over.

  28. Buccos Says:

Bunch of Debbie Downers. Most of whom werenā€™t around for the Decade of Depression. We are competing for the lead in our division and staying in games until the end. I have seen zero quit in this team. If it isnā€™t good enough for you go find another team. This is light years better than when Gerald McCoy was prowling the sidelines. It is actually exciting to watch this years team. When they quit competing is when I will quit watching

  29. StormyInFl Says:

“And then we have the trio of White, Dean and Carlton Davis ā€“ all 3 have completely mailed it in”

All three are making ‘business decisions’.

  30. D-Rok Says:

The better phrase would be Pathetic Effort.

  31. StormyInFl Says:

“So better buckle up because Mayfield is your QB until the season is over.”

Or until they switch to tank mode. They’ll only consider starting Trask when the playoffs are out are no longer possibility. If Bowles starts Trask for any reason other than injury, even more players will be making ‘business decisions’ (quitting).

  32. Oxycondomns Says:

Unfortunately bowles isnt a leader and the roster doesnt have any to make up for it. Licht needs to do a better job on figuring out who to give the big contracts to. You have bowles who is good at developing defensive backs why spend so much money on davis and dean.

  33. Jack Clark Says:

It’s not like receivers are running wide open every play, plus the run blocking is trash so defenses know they can commit to defending the pass without any disadvantage. If Tom Brady couldn’t win without a good running game then what do you expect Baker Mayfield to do?

  34. Oxycondomns Says:

Brady had to bring in some dawgs during that super bowl run. Those dawgs left

  35. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

Come on guys! This isn’t over by a long shot.

We’ve got two tough games coming up. I think we can rattle Stroud with a good defensive effort and come out on top.

The 49er game will need our A plus team but it’s still possible.

The rest are all winnable with the right attitude and that starts here.

Get behind your team or leave! Go Bucs!!

  36. Rod Munch Says:

I watched this like 10 times in a row on the Prime Vision wide view after this play to see what happened – and this is another example of how the TV angle lies.

The garbage Bills high school stadium has a much lower TV angle here than most stadiums, so it makes things look closer than they are.

Watching it from the wide view, you see there are only two players who have a chance to make a play here, Winfield and Izien. So Winfield is more towards the middle of the field, while Izien is more towards the bottom of the screen, and it certainly appeared that Winfield was expecting Izien to ‘attack’ towards Allen, which would have forced Allen back inside towards Winfield who would make the tackle – and since it’s Winfield, he’d probably have caused a fumble or something as well.

Instead Izien stopped almost parallel of Winfield, and basically screened him out of the play. You can see Winfield is p/o’d.

Nothing again Izien, he’s a rookie, and it takes time to develop that sort of 6th sense on the field to know what you should do – however all Bucs players should be taught to always funnell guys towards either David or Winfield.

Watching the play from the wide angle, those are the only two players who appear to have any real chance of doing anything on that play.

As for JTS, I’m not as down on him as others, but Yaya doesn’t seem to play much – but when he does, he tends to stand out. No reason he shouldn’t be playing more downs at this point. JTS is not as bad as people think, but he’s also nothing special, while Yaya might be special, and they should be getting him reps.

Oh, and the other angle where the TV angle lied was the Allen pass to the TE for the TD, where it looked like David came off his coverage to leave the TE wide open – and the idiot on TV also repeated that fake news. Watching the play from the wide view, you can see David is not, in fact, in coverage at all, he’s supposed to shadow Allen – the TE, meanwhile, was supposed to be covered by the loser of all losers, Ryan Neal, who is just an idiot and awful at this job. When the TE is being handed off to him, Neal bites on the TE going upfield, and instead the TE turns inside, and is wide open for the TD pass.

Don’t always believe the TV angle, it’s fake news. Like the nonsense about White not being a good RB, and is slow – when in reality, he’s done a great job of getting yards that otherwise weren’t there. That’s why White’s rushing average is like double of that of any other runner on the team.

  37. Blue Ridge Buc Says:

Its Over For JTS – if you can get a 7th for him on Tuesday, do it.

    Well Played!

  39. Tony Says:

I said it from the beginning, too! They should’ve considered Josh Allen over Devin White but no he ends up in Jacksonville. Maybe they can trade him there & the Bucs can try to see about getting Josh Allen in a trade now. Yeah I doubt it. What idiots. Well all Devin would just have to do is get on his horse & go on up there.

  40. FrontFour Says:

With JTS I don’t think its lack of effort as it is lack of talent. With D. White, it’s lack of interest, lack of effort. I think Dean has one of those injuries that are not talked about. No idea why Mike’s targets and receptions are so low. As for the rest of the team, we have the team we can afford – period. You can bang on Canales and Bowles all you want, but we’ve got youth and retreads in the trenches and an affordable journeyman at QB. We’re in Year 1 of a 2-3 year rebuild. Before the season I said IF we get to 7 wins Bowles will deserve a medal. Still the case.

  41. Tony Says:

I’d put Bobby Boucher in there over Tryon right now.

  42. Tony Says:

    @FrontFour

I said the same thing. I didn’t think they’d win more than 7.

  43. Popcorn Mike Says:

This team is a mess. No consistency. Only David, Winfield and maybe Godwin has been consistent this season Yes I do think some of it is coaching

  44. BFFL Says:

Poor effort from a guy who skipped his senior year over covidā€¦.Iā€™m shocked

  45. Rod Munch Says:

A rookie QB playing only part of the downs is destroying the Falcons defense.

Meanwhile our veteran QB, who got a bunch of turnovers from the defense, managed 13 points vs the Falcons defense.

Good thing the Titans have found their guy though, only a couple of weeks before we play them.

  46. Jack Clark Says:

We should have hired Eric Bieniemy instead of Dave Canales

  47. HC Grover Says:

Stanks ahead of Colts….Falcons behind….4th qtrs

  49. unbelievable Says:

Heā€™s a 1 trick pony who should i on not be used in sub packages.

Not even close to starter material.

As for effort- thereā€™s been nothing but loading since the bye week. But yea, Todd Bowles really knows how to motivate his team, clearly.

We should have hired Eric Bieniemy instead of Dave Canales

    ———-

Who says the Bucs didn’t try?

    Canales was Bowles 11th pick.

No one wanted the job since they know Bowles is done – and you know Bowles told them, “I want an offense where we run the ball and don’t turn it over,” and the 10 other guys said, “it’s 2023, no thanks, I’ll pass.”

With that said, while Canales is seemingly getting worse, I haven’t completely hated the hire. Mayfield, predictably, has played like Mayfield, and that means he’s been terrible these last 3 weeks. He’s missing wide open guys all over the field, and as he loses confidence, more and more he becomes the awful QB we’ve seen on tape the last two years who is nothing but an inaccurate Checkdown Charlie. But guys are open, and Mayfield is missing them each week, and these are big plays he’s missing that would change games.

  51. HC Grover Says:

If they cut Plan 9 he would make a good Cheerleader for the EndZone.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

If the Panthers can get the W here, the Bucs will only be ahead of them by 2 games, with 2 games vs the Panthers coming up.

So the #1 pick is still in play.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

A rookie making his debut, and not even playing full time today, has 4 TDs vs the Falcons.

Meanwhile Mayfield got one TD and 13 points vs the Falcons – having the ball twice, deep in Falcons terrority with the chance to win the game, and instead got the Bucs an L.

  54. Rod Munch Says:

The Texans coming off the bye week decided they needed to ‘run the ball’, comes out and runs it 30 times vs the Panthers, vs only 24 passes… and shock, in the year 2023, that’s a really stupid idea and doesn’t work, and they lose 15-13.

  55. optimisticbucsfan Says:

There were a few plays where our guys were casually jogging behind the play.

The locker room, IMHO, is hanging by a thread.

    ——–

I mean no QB is going to make every play – but yeah, Mayfield is a big part of what’s going on with the offense. In that Lions game, for example, he had 3 long TDs that turned into 0-2 with an INT. That completely changes that game if he makes even one of those plays.

This week vs the Bills, he misses Evans early – which again can happen, that didn’t change the game, but all game, watching the full field on Prime Vision, you see guys wide open all over the place, and you have Mayfield either checking it down or taking sacks, or thinking he’s Lamar and instead ends up running it for 2 yards when you need 10.

Mayfield is doing what Bowles wants, which is not turning it over, so you can give him credit for that. But that is more about Bowles being a complete idiot. You win by outscoring the other team, not by winning the turnover column.

  58. Rod Munch Says:

God, even Zack Wilson is making clutch plays when it matters.

  59. Bucā€™n Aye Says:

Agree with the fire sale with only 14, 78 and 31 as untouchables. Need picks to rebuild this mess.

I would be inclined to start over from the top down. Licht gets too much credit. Fact of the matter is that heā€™s had to be good and lucky in latter round picks to (partially) mitigate a too high error rate at the top of the draft. Logan Hall, JTS, Trask and the kicker comprise 4 costly bungles that come to mind. Then you have White who has been on again off again but you cannot claim as a success because he will never have production to keep pace with his compensation (upcoming).

Blow it all up and start by trading ME13 to contender before the deadline.

Wide receivers running open is like offensive line men opening up holes for the running back to run through. So if wide receivers are wide open all over the place and there are openings for running backs to run through then Dave Canales is doing a good job and we need to replace our quarterbacks and running backs

  64. Rod Munch Says:

    ———-

Evans still has three more ALL-PRO level years in him, and a 4th season where he’ll still be a quality starter. The Bucs need to keep him and give him a new deal, even if they’re going to be overpaying him for that last year.

Outside of that, you’re keeping Godwin, Vita, Wirfs, Winfield and all the guys on their rookie deals.

I’d say trade Davis and Dean, two guys who have value, but are terrible fits for this zone defense that Bowles is running. However both have big deals, and the Bucs would take cap hits by trading them, so I don’t know if they can afford it this season.

Devin White is a great attacking LB, and I’d want him back, but again, in this defense he’s being completely wasted just sitting back in a passive zone for most of the game. So he’d be a guy to trade for something, if the cap allows it.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

The Giants ran the ball 52 times … and lost.

Who would have seen that coming?

Also Zack Wilson, unlike Baker Mayfield, makes plays to get his team the win.

He tend too ignore Baker bad play he harps on his pass completion but forget to tell you his average per attempt!

  67. Rod Munch Says:

Again, the players weren’t loafing on the play – it’s the stupid Bills high school stadium and the lower than usual TV angle that makes people think guys were closer than they really were. I mean look at the play and it appears even David is ‘loafing’, which is complete nonsense. The guys are all further away than you think.

There were only two guys on the play with a chance, and that was Winfield and Izien, and Izien inadvertently ended up picking Winfield and taking both out of the play.

  68. #99 the big fella Says:

I gave Bowles the benefit of doubt before the season started. He got his coaches. Now itā€™s the same crap penalties, canā€™t run, poor game plans, sticking with a player knowing he is hurting the team .. time for Bowles to go!

  69. TonySoprano Says:

Canā€™t help but notice the new hand-picked coaches Toad brought in are overseeing positions that are doing equally bad or even worse than last yearā€¦OLB coach, RB coach, OC

  70. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

The half effort by some on the defense is so easy to justify Joe. I donā€™t blame d white or jts one bit for going on apparent slack attacks from time to time.

You see team mates take notice that half effort by a couple of corners on this club has been so richly rewarded by those in charge handing out gifts with huge unearned contracts. And why should the teammates themselves ball out and possibly get hurt when clearly thatā€™s not what gets one paid on this club. So half effort it is, by example!
That is why itā€™s very important to only reward those that have done it the old fashioned way. The ones that have earned it! Otherwise half effort prevails.

  71. power sweep Says:

Rod Munch Says: “A rookie making his debut, and not even playing full time today, has 4 TDs vs the Falcons.”

Why, that can’t be. Just last week he was a lousy backup who would have beaten out the starter if he was any good, so he couldn’t have possibly played so well today. Right, Bakettes?

  72. steele Says:

So it’s starting again. “Unacceptable effort”. Malaise. Mentally checking out. This was one of the central problems last season. Bowles did nothing to get control of it. Why expect anything different from someone whose career is tarnished by the inability to lead, motivate, inspire and unify? A new culture from the top down has been overdue for a long time.

As for JTS, he’s doing exactly what he has always done. He will continue to juke and get nowhere, get ridden out of plays, and dive back into the pile after failing to make an impact.

  73. Reality BucFan Says:

Just single out the whole defense at that point where is Shaq Barrett where is Dean where are the linebackers I thought in zone you cover the feel anyway they can’t even play zone defense fire the entire coaching staff let’s get some real coaches in here gosh I miss Bruce Arians

  74. SDK Says:

I watched this JTS rep and it was sadder than a reflecting pool at a war memorial. I didnā€™t interpret it as quitting, unfortunately, because to me it looked like he tried one move and then had no idea what else to do when that didnā€™t work. He is not putting it together. Neither is this team. Or this staff. Blow it up and start over.

  75. BuxfaninTX Says:

Itā€™s obvious that JTS is soft. Always around the pile & late to the tackling party.

  76. Drunkinybor Says:

Dean just watched him score. Aint no Winfield in his heart. Pretty bad indictment when our Coach is the D.C. and the whole identity of the team is defense. I guess it’s Back to mind numbingly mediocre Buc Ball it seems. Thank God for Tom Brady the last few seasons.

  77. Drunkinybor Says:

@Buccos I’ve been here for the last 4 decades. We call it as we see it. What are we supposed to be content to see all the wasted talent and not be upset?

  78. Old Sombrero Says:

I didnā€™t say anyone was loading on this play. D White was out of position. We rushed 4 against 5. Cancey was held. The other interior lineman (name escapes me) got rag dolled to the turf as Alan climbed the picket. The middle of the field was wide open as D White follows L David ā€˜helpā€™ David and the corner and safety cover two receivers. Had D White NOT turn his back and run at a 20 degree angle backwards he wouldā€™ve seen Alan break the pocket. Dude is either dense or heā€™s relying on his speed to correct course. Canā€™t do that in NFL. Everyone is fast. Stay in your position to take advantage of your speed. And I donā€™t see anything Neal did wrong. Iā€™m telling you guys it started with White immediately turning and following L David.

People do not understand. Plan 9 is Bowles Super Spy. He has a secret spy camera in his helment. His job is to take film of the action from 10 yards away. He has special shoe cleats that activate his spy cam when he jumps around like a chicken with its head cut off. The thing Bowles needs most is good film to look at after the loss.
