Todd Bowles: No Personnel Changes (Yet)

October 23rd, 2023

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked after the shameful performance of his Bucs if he planned on making personnel changes to wake up his team.

Bowles didn’t deny any plans but cautioned that might not happen this week as there was simply too short of a window to get ready for Buffalo on Thursday night.

Today, Bowles basically confirmed this.

In his day-after presser, Bowles was asked if he will make any changes to the starting lineup. Bowles was short and to the point.

“Not at this time,” Bowles said.

So misplaced slot receiver Rachaad White at running back and maybe a starter or two on defense is safe for another week.

If the Bucs again blow chunks up in the run game up in Buffalo, there better be changes. Unless the Bucs have reset their sights on the draft and not the playoffs.

Color me shocked. Bowles is going with the status quo even though it’s clear as day to everyone else the likes of Ryan Neal, Matt Fieler and Hainsey are not helping this team at all. It’s all the same exact problems we saw last year. Every day is the same with Todd Bowles at the helm.

  2. Dwight Schrute Says:

The Buccaneers are who we thought they were!!

  3. David Says:

Personal changes should start with him then Baker. Toilet Bowl needs to be demoted to DC and Baker needs to be benched. Losing to bad teams and getting blown out by good teams are grounds for demotions.

  4. Mike S Says:

Baker’s last chance is Thursday night.

If he dumps the bed – no sales job will save him.

  5. Joe Says:

Matt Fieler and Hainsey are not helping this team at all.

C’mon now. Bucs lead the league in fewest sacks allowed. It’s not like these two are Oniel Cousins and Garrett “Whoops” Gilkey.

No, those guys are not the Hogs from the R@dskins in the run game, but it’s not like there are never holes. Sure would help if the misplaced slot receiver would run to daylight when it’s there rather than stand behind an offensive lineman and get tackled for a loss.

White’s vision is so damn bad, Joe is starting to think the guy is colorblind and can’t recognize the color green.

  6. Dwight Schrute Says:

I’d like to formally apply for the Buccaneers running back position:
I’m fast. Somewhere between a mongoose and a snake.

  7. Scott Says:

There simply isn’t a better RB on the roster unfortunately

  8. Joe Says:

There simply isn’t a better RB on the roster unfortunately

With the possible exception of Chase Edmonds (dear God) you are probably right.

  9. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

Me thinks we’re drafting a RB in the first round in April, IF Bowles keeps his job. If not, its reload and a new QB. I personally like Baker and think if has a run game, he can be a pro bowl caliber QB.

  10. DBS Says:

You can’t keep making excuses for this oline. There is a reason Baker is not getting sacked and that is Baker. Are you watching the same games we are?

  11. BillyBucco Says:

It’s just about time to figure out who on this team CAN play.
No sense in having another Ryan Griffen for 8 years.
    Can Trask play or NOT?
    Can Tucker play or NOT?
    Can Baker play or NOT?
Sirvocea Dennis, Josh Hayes, Watts, Derek Pitts, Dee Delaney, Keenan Issac?
Sometimes the guys you DON’T see in practice, actually SHOW UP in games.
    You know like Brock Purdy.
What I can guarantee, is that they aren’t gonna loaf!!!!
I’m convinced that both the Offense and Defense need to be dumbed down at this point.
I’m so tired of hearing the word BUSTED from Bowles or miscommunication or by week 16 we will run the ball etc.
Its time to face the facts about this team.
Davis doesn’t care. Neal actually pulled up on Scotty, because Davis had him covered. He turned his head and didn’t even try to make a play. Talk about holding someone accountable, start there.
Devin White continues to watch Lavonte David fly around the field.
You leave your man to CHASE a QB, when Winfiield has him. Just dumb.
Baker was supposedly the right guy because of run check ability and getting us into the RIGHT plays. What a crock. He has made his bed, and it’s time to sleep in it. He misses wide open guys every week. That is Bucs beating Bucs. We don’t even NEED the other team to make a good play. We can’t even make them pay for a bad play.
I’m glad there are no changes this week, because we need to get embarrassed for these coaches to wake up. Heaven Forbid he does make a change and Trask and Co actually beat Buffalo. Might be the first time the Bucs fire a coach after a win as well!!!!!!

  12. Carter Says:

Benching Baker will depend on the precise terms of his contract provision guaranteeing him the starting job.

  13. Colonel Angus Says:

It makes sense, we have a game Thursday. Then make the changes on the mini bye week.

  14. Scott Says:

Back when Edmonds was announced I commented that I thought he was going to be a solid pickup. I don’t think White is all that bad but we definitely could use a rb committee. Edmonds looked like he had some juice in the preseason

  15. Voice of Truth Says:

So what can we realistically do to improve the run game?

Is Stinnie or Leverett going to make a difference? I don’t think so but that is basically it…

Are we going to trade draft capital for a RB or an interior OL while on a 3 game losing streak with a dead man walking at HC?

We are destined for 6 wins max, top ten pick and a reboot of the coaching staff

Does Jason get to pick another staff or do we really just start from scratch???

  16. Joe Says:

Sometimes the guys you DON’T see in practice, actually SHOW UP in games.
    You know like Brock Purdy.

How do you know? Were you at 49ers practices?

Safe bet if Purdy didn’t look like he could handle things in practice Kyle Shanahan would not have put him on the field in the regular season.

This strategy of yours of “just let ’em play and see what they’ve got” is fine for coaches who have job security and are out of the playoffs. For coaches who don’t have job security, this is basically asking a coach to commit career suicide.

Joe doesn’t believe Todd Bowles is that motivated to get himself fired and never have another head coaching gig again.

Once again, if Trask was all that, he’d have beaten out Mayfield. In fact, the Bucs never would have signed Mayfield to begin with if they were that confident in Trask.

Benching Mayfield for Trask at this point means the Bucs will draft a quarterback in April. In the first round! 🙂

  17. Bubby Says:

We need a Jason licht confidence poll.

  18. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd is soooo weak! He’s just not Head Coach material. He’s an average D coordinator and a D- head coach. Lovie Smith earns the F rating.

  19. Chris Stewart Says:

Bawlz is a loser, his track record in Tampa and NY prove that.

  20. Joe Says:

So what can we realistically do to improve the run game?

    1. Trade for a running back.

    2. Give Rachaad White an eye test to make sure he’s not colorblind and let him know when there is green grass to his left or right, he is to attack that and not attack the arse of a lineman.

  21. Architek Says:

This is the problem with hiring retreads at HC. The game has changed and they’re still trying to use legacy solutions for newer problems with players that make more money than ever.

I don’t blame the Glazers for being more conservative with the checkbook with many of these guys!

I don’t see many “max” guys on this roster except Wirfs and Winfield.

  22. HC Grover Says:

    Hire a Head Coach…..

  23. Andrew Fish Says:

How about we do something different. Like spread things out.

Our TE’s cant run block worth a darn and our interior oline cant get a push in the run game. How about more spread formations and use the short pass game as a run game. Like put White as a slot guy and do screens and jet sweeps with him. throw the ball to the backs more out of the backfield. Try more draws. Put Otton out wide as a WR and have him block against safeties and corners. Try Toss plays or outside of the tackles.

the 2 TE zone run up the middle is just not working

Please just do something different. And no we are not a RB away from being a playoff contender so we should not use cap space from the future to get one. (WE HAVE NO CAP SPACE FOR THIS YEAR)

  24. DBS Says:

What does he have to lose? He is losing now? 2 good teams and a garbage team. What does he think the Glazers are thinking?? I had no dog in this fight. But we did see Trask hitting Big Play Trey. Give it a couple games. If it does not work he can go back to Baker. But right now they are putting some of the worst points ever on the board. Unless they are trying to lose.

  25. SlyPirate Says:

CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY FOR THE BILLS
Bucs defense falters in long yardage situations + Allen throws a great longball. Bills will stay away from Winfield and exploit Neil. Not benching Neil is an absolute gift.

This is a blowout victory by the Bills.
    Bills 38
    Bucs 13

3 losses in a row and counting. Expect the annual “players only” meeting next week.

  26. DS Says:

White doesn’t have it, keep him in tho so the glazers clean house. Too bad tho this defense is pretty good

  27. fred Says:

    Delaney is better then Neal

  28. Erik The Viking Says:

I thought we were a young energetic club? Why not run the hurry up offense?

That might give White the opportunity to gain at least one more yard, or Baker to be able to make a throw in the red zone, maybe.

Insanity – Doing the same thing continuously but expecting a different result.

  29. Lakeland Steve Says:

I really don’t think we have a snowballs chance in hell of beating the Bills the way we play. So if and when we lose to the Bills do the Bucs go to full let’s improve our draft position mode or do we trade for a running back and try to salvage the season?

  30. Tony Says:

I said I didn’t think they were gonna win more than 7 games from the beginning & it might be heading that way.

  31. Iamabuc Says:

Hey Joe, I’m with you on this:

“In fact, the Bucs never would have signed Mayfield to begin with if they were that confident in Trask”

You see; that’s the part that the Trask nutthuggers don’t seem to understand. Again, for you Trask lovers; be carefully for what you wish….🤦

  32. garbs65 Says:

The Bucs seem to be the cure for whatever is ailing the other team. Rookie QB? No problem, they slice and dice up our secondary. Can’t stop the run? No problem, our backs and o-line will make you look great. No run game? Just don’t run toward LD and you’ll be good.

I’m confident that the Bills will recover and come to play on Thurs night. I have no confidence that Bucs will show up. I hope I am happily proven wrong!

    Go Bucs!

  33. It's Corn Says:

They are going to be 4-8 the next time they meet the Falcons, who will probably have a healthy Robinson in that one.

  34. AtlBuc Says:

    Joe Says:
Once again, if Trask was all that, he’d have beaten out Mayfield.

Everyone knows Trask outplayed Mayfield in preseason games and in practices. Trask had 509 passing yards to 109 for Mayfield. The question is: If Baker were that good why did the hide him during preseason?

So, what difference does it make if Trasks starts? We aren’t going to the playoffs with Baker. At least we will be developing our young QB. This is as crazy as the Falcons starting Mariota last year instead of Ridder. Those games last year would have made him much better this year.

  35. WyomingJoe Says:

Unlike many of you (Carter, Slypirate, etc.), I do believe that the Bucs can bounce back… yes with Mayfield. However, it’s quite evident that we don’t have any RBs. How is it that the MANY teams have two or three really good RBs and we don’t have one?! And how can play action work if no one respects our run game? And don’t give up the ship after only 6 games! And, one last thing: BAKER IS BETTER THAN TRASK.

  36. Tony Marks Says:

    DBS – Really?

“Give it a couple games. If it does not work he can go back to Baker. ”

You just made joe’s point. What NFL coach doesn’t get sacked going to a guy that was a third stringer out of panic and has to go back to the veteran? Especially without being more than two games out of first place in the division. You probably couldn’t get a college gig after doing something so suspect.

  37. K_bassuka Says:

We have to endure another week of 🗑 play at QB. 🤦🏽‍♂️

  38. TB bolts Says:

Joe just say you’re a Trask hater and be done with it. You have no basis for putting him down. Hasn’t started a single regular season game. Hopefully he goes elsewhere, shines and you end up wearing the dunce hat for the foreseeable future.

  39. Since76 Says:

Mayfield is going to give the new coaching staff the best chance to succeed. He will deliver a very high draft pick. No personnel changes means tanking for next year.

  40. K_bassuka Says:

Barker Maybefield future in the league is as an emergency backup. You know the QB teams play when the team is about to fire the coaching staff and stuff.

  41. Jerseybuc Says:

Chief arms cross. Nope we good going leave it as it is. Can’t wait for this guy to go it will be end of this year he will not change his slow ways. Pay harbaugh whatever he wants.

  42. Beej Says:

Ok… exactly HOW many names did MPTF use?

  43. Rod Munch Says:

At this point I hope they do trade for someone, and then when they are getting tackled 2 yards behind the LOS as they’re handed the ball, everyone can say how Licht blew it and traded for the WRONG guy.

    ITS NOT THE RUNNINGBACKS.

    It’s the blocking.

The team stinks at run blocking.

Simple solution, stop running the football.

And no, that doesn’t mean literally never run the football, but it means stop wasting downs.

Or if you are going to run it, actually commit to it, go FULL BOWLES, and run it every down for at least 2 quarters, then, when you finally playaction pass out of it, you’re gong to truly catch the other team by surprize.

  44. Pewter Pride Says:

Baker is not better than Trask. Baker sucks, and Trask has yet to be given a chance to play with the 1’s. It will be bitter sweet if another team gives him a shot and he succeeds. But…after Baker $hits the bed in Buffalo, we will have seen the last of him.

  45. Pistol Pete Says:

I’ll say Baker gets 2 more losses before they flip to Trask for a Top 8 pick in the QB rich draft. I hate to say this but I thought our days of being mathematically eliminated were a thing of the past. Feels like that’s in play this season.

  46. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

I know Baker hasn’t looked good the past couple of weeks but there is plenty of blame to go around besides him. First off Vaughn really sucks & why Canales puts him in there baffles me. I would rather see any other RB in there instead of him. Hell I would rather see Fournette than him. The interior linemen aren’t getting it done nor is the TE’s. D. White has been MIA. Bright spot Davis is playing his ass off. Neal needs to be replaced with Delaney & they should sign Logan. Bowles seat is getting warmer & warmer. Like I said a lot of blame to go around.
