Timing Of The Bye

October 3rd, 2023

Reflects on week off.

When a team gets a bye is pretty damn important.

For example, Joe thinks a big reason the Bucs won the Super Bowl in 2020 was that the Bucs had a very late bye in the first week of December.

Joe reasoned the Bucs were fresher for the Super Bowl run than their opponents. And what do you know, the Bucs ran the table after the bye week that year. Coincidence?

This year the Bucs have an incredibly early bye. Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales said last week in a perfect world you want a late bye, but he believes an early bye will be good to reassess how he is running things. It’s his first year as an NFL offensive coordinator and an early bye means time for meaningful adjustments before it’s too late.

Todd Bowles seems to agree. He told Dan Lucas of WFLA-TV Channel 8 yesterday in their weekly sitdown that because of an early rash of injuries the bye comes just at the right time.

“Right now we are banged up so the early bye week fits us well,” Bowles said. “We can get some guys well [who are] nursing injuries.”

Bowles also reiterated what Canales said: in this case the early bye can help.

“We can scheme things,” Bowles said about a deep dive into self-scouting. “But the biggest thing is for us to get healthy.”

Two big factors here are defensive tackles Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey. Vea is nursing a pec injury and if he tears it, he’s done for the year. So that is critical.

And obviously, a week off means Kancey can return that much quicker, whenever that may be.

If the Bucs can get Vea and Kancey healthy and on the field at the same time, look out.

Also if we take care of business early we can rest players the last week of the year. The remaining schedule has 3 teams left that will be really difficult. Lions, Bills, and 49ers. the rest of the schedule are all winnable games.

  2. BucU Says:

Will Kancey FINALLY be ready for the Detroit game? I’ll can my latest diatribe on the dude. I’m going to assume he will be playing the Dtroit game. I want to enjoy this bye week sitting at a glorious 3-1.

  3. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Bucs fought hard against the Iggles , but nothing went their way. The kittens already lost to the Falcons , so there is that. Bucs win a wild shootout 34-31.

  4. BucU Says:

Agreed Andrew. Dtroit is a damn good team and a real tough out. We need all hands on deck. You hear that Kancey???

  5. Arn platz Says:

I’m betting the NFL flexes the game to Sunday night.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

If the Bucs can get to 5-1 that Thursday Night game against Buffalo will get a TON of eyes. I hate looking ahead, but this Detroit game is winnable. Let’s just not lose 3 or 4 guys in the process. Jameison Williams coming back could be a serious situation. I’ll ne watching Detroit next week for sure.
Ridder in Atlanta doesn’t look right to me. Back to Back pics is flat terrible.
Seems like teams are figuring him out already.
I think the Bucs can sweep the Division, and if they watch game film on Matt Feiler, he can do way better.
Watch the lone sack against Baker play and tell me if Feiler touched a single defender. Shovel pass to Chris Godwin, he run right past Cam Jordan to get to the 2nd level and Godwin gets tackled by Jordan at the LOS.
On the sack play NO showed pressure with six and Feiler could have blocked the safety with a toe, but when he backed out into coverage, Feiler was LOST.
PLEASE, Read your assignments (plural) and KNOW what to do if you don’t have a man rushing. This is fundamental stuff man.

No way, NFL already rescheduled it to 4:25. For once, Bucs caught a lucky (say what?!) break with the timing of this Bye. It also gives BM and the other newbies a chance to rest and review their play, too. I know I’m glad as a fan for it. Damn Aints make me nervous every time we play them. I can kick back, enjoy this win, and a 3-1 record. Bucs did their best against Philly. Iggles got the breaks and Bucs just weren’t up to their level-yet.

  8. Buc4evr Says:

Always worried about the Bucs coming off a bye week, they always seem to lose focus and momentum.

  9. Jack Clark Says:

“We can scheme things,” Bowles said about a deep dive into self-scouting.

Tell our pass rushers not to eat any cake during the bye week because they are sweet enough already!

  10. Tampa2-2002 Says:

I would never understand why the NFL dont make half the teams take a bye week in week 8 and the other half in week 9, that way no team is advantaged or disadvantaged by the bye

  11. SB~LV Says:

    Gawd !
It’s a brutal game and it’s gone from 12 game season to 17 before the playoffs.

    @BucU

I’m not sure I comprehend your point about Kancey. Vita Vea played 13 games his rookie season and just FIVE his 3rd year! Do you think he’s a wuss? Was HE a waste of a first round draft pick. How about GMAC? He too missed his share of games.

I’ve seen some gory videos of Olympic lifters tearing their biceps from the bone and other horrible injuries. Were they out of shape? Were they sissies?

There is absolutely NO ONE who wants to see Kancey on the field more than Kancey!

Picking on a guy during his darkest time after just four games comes across as both heartless and clueless when you consider Vea and GMAC. Big men with big bodies are freaks of nature and as the commercial went…it’s not nice to fool mother nature.

IF somebody has proof that Kancey is responsible for his own injury..or Burrows who had the same injury…the insults are just mean spirited.

Oh my god Stpete, spare me your gd virtuous musings on the emotional state of players, how we should all hold our hands in prayer and dig deep for allllll the compassion and empathy in the world for someone we don’t know all because you’re feeling hormonal about it. Get f’d guy. Fan are allowed to vent, and you usuing examples of players that have also missed games doesnt make it any less annoying. You crying and white knighting on behalf of 22yr olds doesnt shine a light on my cold dark heart for being annoyed at someones unavailability. I don’t need some weird hippie telling me how I should be feeling, thats one. Two lots of players go years without missing games ok. You cherry picking doesnt strengthen your argument. It is an actual fact that some people are injury prone and YES THAT IS ANNOYING, and people want to see the team getting value out of their first round pick ok GHANDI? Get over yourself

  14. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Calling out a player from the sofa, because he is hurt, is ignorance.

  16. SlyPirate Says:

    THE BIG, HUGE QUESTION …

The Bucs are 1-2 players away from contending … CONTENDING FOR A SB!
They shouldn’t be here but here they are.

If you were Licht, what do you do?
    A) Push in. Sign a player (ie. D White), get cap room, and trade for top-tier RB
    B) Let it ride. Evaluate for the future and come into next year with cap and picks ready to reload

A lotta posters on this site using words and phrases they clearly don’t understand.

Ya’ll know they have dictionaries on the internet now too, right?

  18. Hodad Says:

Even tho the bye is early in the season, these players have been going football since July, all the dog days of summer. It’s been real hot since then, these Bucs need this break. It’s coming just right.

  19. UKBuccaneer Says:

Mrs UKbuccaneer is a Lions fan, so I get to see them a lot. They’re not a team to overlook, by any stretch. It’ll be a test every bit as hard as the eagles game.

  23. 941Boltsfan Says:

Very pleased with how the Bucs are doing post Brady and the reason why Bowles shouldn’t be in any form of a hot seat, he is a defensive head coach who has proven even after an off year, that he can turn a defense around. With that being said Dave Canales name being talked about around the league to join the Coaching carousel with the work he’s done between Geno and now the revitalization of Baker. Not that I believe Canales has teams biding after 4 weeks as an OC. But, a solid consistent proven defensive head coach is harder to come by. Exciting times to see how the selfscouting works and how Canales will grow his playbook, and I could only imagine if there was a run game that opposing teams had to worry about too. Keep playing with that post-Brady chip boys!
