Sorry Excuse For “Good” Teams

October 22nd, 2023

“I’ve seen this before.”

So the Bucs and the Dixie Chicks were playing for the NFC South lead today. Somewhere, NFL strongman Roger Goodell must have been seriously considering contraction.

The fact the Bucs and Dixie Chicks were considered division leaders, well, after today they need to issue an apology to the NFL.

The Bucs would have been blown out against a decent team. Seriously. Dismal Dixie Chicks quarterback Desmond Ridder lost three red zone fumbles. Three! And the Bucs only scored 13 points!

Joe cannot remember the last time an opposing quarterback gave away the football in the red zone like Halloween candy and still won. That is just remarkable.

No, the Bucs, who have now lost two straight for a 3-3 record, are not a good team. The fact Joe types seriously about playoff percentages for the Bucs would normally be an embarrassment. But that’s how bad this division is.

Joe is afraid this team has a long, long way to go if it hopes to make the playoffs, much less win a playoff game or two.

Right now, the Bucs sure look like a Lovie Smith team. At least the offense does.

    Time to start Kyle Trask

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What is missed here is how many times Atlanta got to the red zone…..they marched up and down the field……and we were impotent when we got there….

This is not a good team and is poorly coached……

  3. jehzsa Says:

I think the Bucs are worse than it looks. Deep undercurrent there.

  4. RagingBrisket Says:

Got a Lovie Smith (Jason Licht) type offensive line too

  5. hammerhead Says:

Trask not yet. Wait til after the Bills blowout and another inadequate performance from Mayfield and the gang. Then against the Texans and Titans let’s see what we’ve got in Track.

  6. LOL Bucs Says:

Do we really want a repeat of last year’s playoff season? Win 9 games and a bad NFC South. Then get embarrassed in the first round? If we aren’t contending for a Super Bowl, then we need to be playing for the draft. Especially a draft with some strong QB prospects.

  7. Crazyhorse54 Says:

Until the offensive strategy changes whoever you consider to be the Greatest could be the QB and it wouldn’t make a difference.

  8. Bucs13 Says:

Amen, Joe. You don’t sugarcoat it. Ridder is awful. This game wouldn’t have even been close if not for his incompetence. Leftwich is laughing at us from his couch.

  9. UKBuccaneer Says:

‘Playing for the draft’ is a sure fire way to suck, long-term. Even high draft picks are a lottery.

  10. Miller5252 Says:

The crazy thing is the amount of talent on this team and todays game is the best they can do. There’s always one off games in the nfl that should be just wrote off but this is a horrible pattern that continues from last year. All this good young talent and this team can’t even come close to beating a sorry Falcons team. Bucs should have never been in this game. Trask ain’t gonna change nothing

  11. Bucs13 Says:

This team has unfounded arrogance. They went on a whole media tour during the bye week pumping their chest. Licht, Baker, and Bowles were offenders

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Listening to Bears podcasts when the Bucs beat them – and one thing that was entertaining was the reverence they have for Lovie Smith. He’s viewed nearly in the same light as Tony Dungy is viewed here.

I never minded him as a head coach, he got a raw deal since he was clearly tasked with tanking in 2014 – and then managed to have a top 10 defense in 2015 with not a lot of talent.

For Bowles, however, he’s much less of a head coach than Lovie ever was – but he’s also a better DC.

  13. Jack Clark Says:

“The Bucs, if they were playing just a decent team, would have been blown out. Seriously. Dismal Dixie Chicks quarterback Desmond Ridder lost three red zone fumbles. Seriously, three. And the Bucs only scored 13 points!”

Our defense is going to have to stop teams from scoring double digits because Dave Canales sorry as offense can only score 18 points on a good day!

  14. ElioT Says:

This was such a huge game for the Bucs to take.

Major division, conference and coming schedule implications.

    They’re not talented enough.

    They’re not coached well enough.

    They don’t want it enough.

    They couldn’t do it.

  15. SBucs Says:

Would you trust this team with another draft?

  16. Austin Says:

We beat the saints in the dome and couldn’t beat the falcons at home

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

Defense was asleep all day. Dixie chicks walked them up and down the field all day- over 400 yds.
Only the chicks imploding in the red zone all day saved it from being a blowout.

Our running game sucked horribly last year- and Bowles and Licht did NOTHING.
All off season. All preseason. 6 games into this season.
And they still have not addressed a run game that was a nightmare last year.

    Inexcusable

  18. SlyPirate Says:

    @Buf – L, @Hou – L, Tenn – W, @SFO – L, @Ind – L, CAR – W, @ATL – L, @GB – L, Jax – L, NO – L, @CAR – L (for draft)

That’s good enough for #5 or #6 in the draft. That’s Penix or Bowers.

  19. Bucs13 Says:

Sure miss those Brady heroics we had last year with close games today. Brady would’ve checked it down to White in the RZ instead Baker got greedy. I had no faith that Baker would come through. At least with Tom I had confidence, no matter if he had played an awful game all day.

  20. ElioT Says:

The Bucs are 1-3 at home? Wow.

Need to throw that Carolina win, if they do that, and lose the Titans game, they’re still in it for the #1 overall pick. Carolina traded their pick to the Bears, so they have no reason to try to tank. The Bears won today. The Broncos will not be as bad as they’ve been all season.

So the #1 overall pick isn’t totally out of the question, and with Bowles coaching the team and telling the offense to run the ball more, they might get that pick without even trying to.

    ————

Well he is the greatest of all time.

But if this was last year, would anyone of had a doubt at the end that he’s getting the TD and not playing for a FG?

Then again we saw last year that Bowles is such a coward, he’d literally take the ball out of Brady’s hands at the end of a game and play for a tie.

It’s really hard to overcome awful coaching.

  24. Bucsfan951 Says:

Just think, just 7 days ago, the Bucs played on a flexed game because the nfl thought it was going to be a great matchup between two teams. Since the start of that game, the Bucs have 19 points, 119 yards rushing, and 3 turnovers…

    Fml

  25. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

We’re not close to average. But we get the 0-6 Panthers twice. We are in deep doo doo. I hope we can get Williams, Maye or Penix.

  26. Bucs13 Says:

@Rod. You say this team is meant to pass, but the biggest problem is that we don’t have the right QB! Baker’s football IQ isn’t good pre or post snap. ATL sat in zone. Godwin should’ve had a great game. We have better pass protection this year. This offense should be pass first like in 2020 and 2021

  27. dmatt Says:

I agree, let’s not wait for the wheels to come off, let’s start Trask. Mayfield plays like a rookie. He continues to have balls batted down n overthrow open receivers. I thought Canales philosophy was 2.7 seconds no one open then run or throw it away. Mayfield had about five seconds in the pocket before he got sacked vs taking off to run. Don’t understand why he took a few sacks today. Again, JTS should’ve stopped Ridder from scoring but as usual JTS took the bait n responded too late. Other than Winfield, our secondary sucks. Kevaugn is a dud, dude can’t catch a cold. How bout position change n move RWhite to wr.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Rahaad White is a great 3rd down back…..great hands….moves well in space……on first & second down….there is no space.

  29. DBS Says:

TBBF. I didn’t miss that. Somewhere I saw that written today in another thread.

@Rod. You say this team is meant to pass, but the biggest problem is that we don’t have the right QB!

    ———

I don’t disagree with you – but even with that, the team’s best chance to win is still passing, not just running it more up the middle for -1 yards per play.

Also, Mayfield has played well in a few of his starts. He’s not my guy, never has been, but it’s worth noting he’s not been a disaster or anything over the whole of the season. The issue, however, is the ‘good’ Baker we saw is the best he’ll ever be. He’s a streaky guy, who can look competent for stretches, then we get what he’s been the last two weeks – and this is the guy going forward for the most part. Sure, he might have a decent game again at some point, but it’s going to be bad Mayfield for the most part – if his history is to be believed.

  31. RagingBrisket Says:

Bucsfan951- had not thought of it that way. 3-1 quickly turns into 3-3 and we play on Thursday night against a way better football team. Amazing how quickly shht changes.
If only Licht had fielded an NFL caliber Oline instead of surfing his wave of small school success and wishful thinking.
Sorry folks, Licht crippled this team by shopping the clearance isle since he lucked out when he drafted Wirfs.
Don’t like the product, look who is putting it on the shelves

  32. ATLBucsFan Says:

Our opponents must smile when they see the Bucs on their schedule.

I agree, let’s not wait for the wheels to come off, let’s start Trask.

    ——–

Last thing you want is to see Trask start at Buffalo, his first start ever, on the road, vs a very mad and p/o’d Buffalo defense. His line would be like 12/30 for 114 yards and 3 INTs – and then you’re back to starting Mayfield the following week. That doesn’t mean I think Trask is that guy, but in that particular situation, that is always the outcome, even good QBs in that scenario do terribly.

No, you start Mayfield, tell him he’s playing for his career – and let him sink or swim in the pressure.

Meanwhile the Bucs have given up less sacks than anyone.

But yeah, that’s some good analysis coming out of yoru mouth, minus the sis.

  36. Bojim Says:

I think Taylor Swift is at the Chiefs game!!!!! 😁

  37. Bucswin Says:

Maybe we need some new receivers and a running back and a tight end and an offense. 13 points? Wtf

  38. Bobby M. Says:

Anyone that’s followed Todd Bowles career knows this is par for the course…..he’s simply not a good HC. With the Jets, the excuse was he never had a decent QB. Last year he’s gifted the GOAT and somehow produces the first losing season of the GOATs 20+ yr career….in the worst division in the league. Bowles sucks, it’s that simple.

  39. Marco Says:

It’s time to go get Jim Harbaugh. PLEASE!!!!!!!

  40. 1#bucsfan Says:

Listen I’m a trask fan and have bin rooting for him to win the job but deff baker hasn’t deserved to be benched. That int was ridiculous. Winston like. But he’s made only a few bad mistakes out of 6 games that doesn’t warrant benching. Maybe batted balls don’t happen as much but baker is great at avoiding the rush. This game is more on the Oline not able to open up holes white not hitting the holes that are there and bad play calling. What do you expect with a brand new play caller new QB and a few new starters on the oline. Defense is pourers at times but they keep us in the game get turnovers. The defense is going to have to start scoring for us to get more pts

  41. Rod Munch Says:

As a reminder, Todd Bowles managed to get Brady his first loses vs Atlanta and the Cowboys, he also managed to get the GOAT his first ever losing season. Bowles literally took the ball out of Brady’s hands at the end of the Browns game, and played for a tie. He’s as loser of a headcoach as there is.

But, as a DC, he’s great. But just like a woman, he should never be given the drivers’ seat.

    ———-

Except Winston would have put up 31 points today, not 13.

  43. Bucs13 Says:

@Rod. Honestly, I don’t think Brady will forgive Bowles. I think he likes him as a person, but doesn’t think he’s a good coach. Brady was fuming when Bowles pulled him in the last game. Brady owned Todd when he coached for the Jets. He’s not an idiot. He knows Bowles isn’t HC material.

  44. Why Not Says:

Joes, can you stop dissing the Atlanta Falcons? The Falcons are building a good team and though they still have room for growth, they are better than the Bucs at this point. I think the Bucs have more individual talent right now, but as a team, we are not there yet. Give the Falcons some respect! That is coming from a dude who is from Tampa (Chamberlain Class of 1985) and someone who has continuously owned season tickets since 1997. I love the Bucs, but we are mediocre at best right now. If we can find a running game between the seat cushions of Jason Licht’s sofa, we may have a chance to win the division. If not, let’s see what Trask can do.

  45. Fansince76 Says:

    The offense sucks arse!
No way are they making the playoffs!

  46. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

This team is bad. Really bad. Don’t start Trask Thursday in Buffalo. That would be insane. The Bills are mad after losing to a crappy NE team today. They will take it out on our Bucs early and often. Let Mayfield do what he does. Buffalo 35-10.
    Start Trask the next week.

  47. Nope Says:

Time to Bake? Lol..more like time to burn😆🤣😂

  48. Irish Laughter Says:

    Darn!

  49. Mord Says:

I wonder if the Bucs would have drafted differently if they didn’t think Ryan Jensen was gonna return. The lack of OL push in the run game is inside. And that lack of push is affecting every other outcome for this team.

(Not to say White and Vaughn are great, but ..)

  50. Oneilbuc Says:

Defense played good enough to win they gave up 16 points where is the offense?? This is how you know that Kyle Trask beat Baker Mayfield out in training camp. That’s why they didn’t let him play in the preseason because they knew Trask was better but Baker Mayfield is more popular and that’s why he’s the starter. I’m done with Baker Mayfield!!

  51. Oneilbuc Says:

Most of yall were beginning for Baker Mayfield and there you have him lol 🤣🤣..

  52. Buc4evr Says:

Disgusting and not mad at Mayfield. The O line is a group of putrid players.

  53. Pelsbuc61 Says:

We’re just beginning those putrid post SB years you call the lost years. Nothing will change until we get a new and competent HC, OC, QB, beef up the lines and get the right players. I don’t think GM Licht can get those players. He was lucky that BA came and then Brady which meant Brady was the GM/recruiter in chief. Brady got us the horses on offense and we had alpha dogs on defense like Suh and JPP. No such leaders now. Bowles has really ruined the little culture that remained.

  54. Pewter Power Says:

Stop with the Kyle Trask nonsense. He’s not going into the game until we throw in the towel on the season

  55. Voice of Truth Says:

They are exactly what everyone said they were but you Joes have been lying to yourselves and the public for quite some time

    This team is pathetic

  56. Les Says:

Bowles needs to go now !! Get a intern coach ,has to be better than this same old boring no balls game calling. Play calling stinks .running and hitting the same wall every week is called insanity .doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result !; Bowles is insane !!

  57. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Beta males trying too hard to be alphas is what you get with Mayfield. He’s a short guy with a Napoleonic complex, a classic tryhard. He’s not good enough to win on a consistent basis but good enough to make a few ooh aah plays a game keeping his fanbois in his jock. He was gifted the qb spot because he has real game experience even though he was beat by a 3rd year player. He’s not big enough to put this team on his shoulders.

  58. Oneilbuc Says:

Pewter. I know you don’t want to hear it because you were one of the main ones that thought Baker Mayfield was a good quarterback it was just the teams he went to. Facts are facts we all know Kyle Trask out played Baker Mayfield all training camp and that’s why Baker Mayfield didn’t play much in preseason they knew he wasn’t better than Trask. And Bowles rather lose Baker Mayfield than put Trask in to see what he can do in a regular season game. The season is already over and I have to say it the running game didn’t matter when Jamies was here so should it matter now? And watch all off season you are going to hear about you don’t pay a runningback because you can just plug in a guy but for some reason it never works for the bucs. Lol 🤣
