Road Baker Vs Home Baker

October 26th, 2023

Baker Mayfield sort of made a strange statement this week in advance of tonight’s Bucs-Bills game in Buffalo.

After losing three consecutive games at home, at times in front of hostile crowds, Joe could understand why Mayfield publicly was embracing a road game on a short week.

“Yeah, I always love road games,” Mayfield said. “Just being in an environment where it’s just your team against everybody else, the fans included. You just enjoy the environment, and as competitors, you kind of thrive on that. We’re looking to be really focused, play for each other and go in and somehow find a way to win.”

Joe gets enjoying a road game, but Mayfield’s love of the road sent Joe looking for Mayfield’s record away from his home turf.

In his six seasons, Mayfield is 13-26 as a starter in the regular season on the road, plus 1-1 in the playoffs.

Yes, Mayfield has had some of his best games on the road, especially at Cincinnati. But overall his record has been brutal.

Perhaps on Mayfield’s mind was his perfect record on the road with the Bucs this season? Joe sure hopes that streak continues tonight. The Joe typing here thinks it will, though that’s not a popular opinion at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Baker ranks at the bottom of NFL qb’s throwing to open receivers this season. That is a strong indicator of why he has been losing at home with Bucs. That isn’t good. That tells us why this offense has not produces but 17 points in two games at home.

  2. Fred McNeil Says:

The Bills don’t seem to play well at home this year either.

  3. Boss Says:

    I like Baker’s moxie…….

but I have never been able to get past his guido look of his.

just like our DB with dreads. cut that $hit man and you’ll be faster

professionalism matters more than looking cool.

  4. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Baker thinks he is a real thriver.

Just more empty talk from Baker. If he could thrive, at home, or on the road, he would have by now.

The fact is, he can’t thrive, anywhere. He’s all talk.

  5. Fred McNeil Says:

I predict the Bucs win a low scoring game. Well, it better be low scoring or we are in big trouble. Maybe we can run a little ves the Bills crappy run defense.

  6. Mike Malarkey Says:

What’s the bucs home record been the past 4 seasons? Typically we play horrible at home

Good point Joe. Yes, the home crowd is hostile against Baker. Bucs home crowd are not the only one in NFL to be hostile against a QB who does more off the field than on the field of play. The fans spend good amount of money to attend and it is so disgrace to the fans that Bucs gamble to fill the seats with Baker at helm.

I have noticed more empty seats and opponent fans in our home games this year than previous years. I wonder why ? An inferior product with Baker as its captain.

  8. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If Baker is as good as he thinks he is, the Bucs should roll the Bills.

  9. Since76 Says:

This is Bakers last year as a starter.

  10. D Cone Says:

What might help elevate Joe’s hopes is Mayfield is 4-0 on Thursday Night.

  11. Kidfloflo Says:

There was always gonna be a drop off after people lost the chance to see Brady live before he retired, no matter who the QB is, fact…At this point only a winning streak and a playoff berth will bring the band wagoners back

  12. Zwak Says:

If we are losing at halftime and don’t give Trask a chance I don’t see Bowles returning next year..

  13. Kyland Says:

    Who is joe?

  14. Bucs'n'Bucks Says:

What did you want him to say? That he’s scared? That he’s sure we’ll lose?

    That’s your job.

He’s trying to stay positive and I, for one, hope he’s right.

  15. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Pretty easy to blame Baker, he’s abrasive. You love him or you hate him, nothing in between. Bucs have a punchers chance tonight because Josh Allen puts on his Sam Darnold mask and sees ghosts under pressure. Would ne a goodnight to see Calijah shine

  16. Irish Laughter Says:

Bucs 27 Bills 17 Bet on it. Baker breaks out and the defense is sold. Bowles confidence rating is back up into the 70% level on the JOEMETRIC scale.

  17. Capt2fish Says:

The browns were the worst team in the league when he was drafted him so obviously a lot of losses home and away until he took them two deep into the playoffs in 2020. He did pretty well on the road in college as I recall.

“Statistics can prove anything…14% of all people know that.” H. Simpson

    Bucs for the upset tonight!

  18. Bucsalltheway Says:

Baker must be due for a good game they don’t have any props for him on fan duel I find it annoying he’s always good for the 250 passing yards and 10yds scrambling…

  19. Bucsalltheway Says:

Bills are short 3 key defensive players

  20. Stanimal66 Says:

It’s going to feel good when the Buccaneers shut the Mayfield haters up after tonight’s Buccaneer road win! The haters were gone and now they are back and need a kick in the throat!
    Go Buccaneers!
    Bucs 28 Bill’s 17

  21. Defense Rules Says:

I gave up predicting Bucs’ wins & losses because they’re much too inconsistent … just like Mayfield. Bills have been much better at defending the pass (#10) than they’ve been at stopping the run (#23). Teams who’ve beaten them have primarily beaten them by (1) running on them; and (2) winning the Turnover Battle.

Jets beat them in Game 1 by running 28 times (for 97 yds) vs passing only 22 times, but the Bills committed 4 TOs vs only 1 for the Jets. Jaguars beat them in Game 5 by running 40 times (for 196 yds) vs passing 37 times (both teams committed 2 TOs each). Patriots beat them by running 24 times (for 96 yds) vs passing 30 times, and Bills committed 2 TOs vs only 1 for the Pats. Mac Jones had an awesome game though, going 25-for-30 for 272 yds & 2 TDs (Jones was 4-for-4 deep but mostly threw short stuff).

So ya, if the Bucs are firing on all cylinders tonight we COULD beat them, but we’re unlikely to do so unless our running game comes alive, Baker has a good night, AND our defense limits them to our 17 PPG average and forces at least a couple turnovers. Hey, anything’s possible.

  22. HC Grover Says:

Bills by 10…Bucs do not beat the spread. We will get a late 4th qtr mercy score once it is out of reach.

Give it up. Sheesh. If they’re down one score they ain’t benching Mayfield. They’d have to be completely blown out at half time before that thought crosses anyone’s mind.

    Can Mayfield outrun Allen?
