Jared Goff Not Much Of A Road Quarterback

October 15th, 2023

Average on the road with Lions.

With a little luck, road Jared Goff will show up today.

The Bucs face off against the Lions in what is a major test. If recent history is any gauge, Lions quarterback Goff will be, well, mortal.

Last year Goff only threw for 1,966 yards, six touchdowns with four picks in eight road games. Here is further information on Goff and his road numbers, per Sharp Football Analysis:

Since joining the Lions, Goff has now thrown 43 touchdowns in the regular season at home, second in the NFL.

This week he is on the road, where he has thrown 14 passing touchdowns over that same span, 26th in the league.

Joe can’t make fun of Goff because this is who he comes home to after a road game.

Road Goff did pretty well last week throwing for three touchdowns against the Stinkin’ Panthers. Goff, however, sort of struggles with the blitz, per Sharp Football.

When Goff has been blitzed he is … 22nd in yards per pass attempt (6.5 Y/A).

When he has not been blitzed, Goff is averaging 8.6 Y/A (third).

One guy who loves to blitz is Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

So there is your matchup to watch. Goff’s blitz struggles vs. Bowles’ blitzes. The game within the game.

    Goff is nothing special…
The major issue is ‘can the Bucs run against the Lions”….
If the Bucs can figure out the run issues, they should be capable of matching up well with this Lions team…

In the fantasy football world its well known you never start Goff on the road. But it’s much more of a stat thing than a real life thing, as he still plays well enough – just his numbers are not impressive.

As for Goff, overall, he’s not bad. He’s not special either.

If they haven’t figured out Bowles blitzes by now they sure don’t deserve to win. GO BUCS!

just don’t let him settle in back there…he’s a rhythmic qb for sure…i’ve watched this fugger closely over the years…keep him on his toe and he gets a little trent dilfer-ish…

Can you say put him on his but here without getting put into the naughty corner?

    Go Bucs!

  6. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

With Kancey in the game next to Vea I doubt we’ll need to blitz often, but I do expect to see Mr. Winfield “shaking hands” with Mr. Goff a few times. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Mr. White introduce himself as well.

Hopefully Shaq is feeling better today as well. My bold prediction is JTS gets himself a sack today.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Looking at Goff’s performances in each of the Lions’ 5 games, he reminds me a lot of Baker Mayfield (except that he’s got a much more effective run game to work with). Throwing 69.8% completion rate over 5 games (Baker is the same with 69.6%). Distributes the ball extremely well (scaringly so) and throws a very good deep ball.

Looking at how often he throws deep, thus far Goff is 18-for-30 deep (60% completions) for 455 yds and 4 TDs against only 1 INT on a deep ball. Even deep he distributes the ball well though …

    o Reynolds: 7 for 10 (70% catch rate deep).
    o Brown: 6 for 8 (75% catch rate deep).
    o Raymond: 4 for 6 (67% catch rate deep).
    o LaPorta: 1 for 3 (33% catch rate deep).
    o Jones: 0 for 2 (0% catch rate deep).

Looks to me like Goff & the Lions are VERY GOOD at setting up the deep ball by mixing runs & short passes, getting you running all over the field to defend them, then hitting on the deep strike. Our Secondary better be careful of cheating forward to help defend the run or else they’ll get burned.

We dont have a run game to fall back on at this point. OL will have to give Bake some time to find ME/CG downfield.
Im pumped to see this Defense eat!

  9. Pewter Power Says:

Yep and those stats didn’t stop them from going into arrowhead and beating the Super Bowl champions on opening night. This last year stats are done, I can’t about what he’s done through 5 weeks and Bowles gives up plenty passing yards
